"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Over Easy

Cool, gray and rainy in the Bronx, like London in July. It’s a welcome change, really. A soup is good food day.

Yanks and Tribe back at it.

Go git ’em, boys.

According to hittrackeronline, Alex's bomb last night went 460 feet.

Longest hit last night, but only 12th longest home run hit this year.

2 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:10 pm

2 seam dreamin'!

3 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:12 pm

Just say no to Frankie Cervelli.

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:14 pm

Say YES to Jesus!

5 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:19 pm

Yes, YES, YES!!

6 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:27 pm

Talbot's sinker looked good in the first.

7 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:36 pm

Nice ab by Robbie. Nice to see him work a walk.

8 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:37 pm

Wow, Ichiro has been stinky this year.

9 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:39 pm

Well that sucked. Damn double plays.

10 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:43 pm

Yeah, that's a brilliant idea Kay.

Brilliant.

11 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:48 pm

[10] i missed it...what did Dr. Kay suggest?

12 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:49 pm

A bunt single from Brett. Am I dreaming?

13 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:53 pm

Nope. Wide awake.

14 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:53 pm

[10] That because we now have inter-league play, there should only be 1 set of post-season awards.

Sorry Brett, nice move with the left, but I think he got you on the chest.

15 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:55 pm

[14] Actually, there is a certain logic to that. I'd rather just get rid of interleague play, but that dead horse is out of the barn.

16 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:55 pm

What IS Frankie Cervelli good at?

17 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:57 pm

Yuk.

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 1:58 pm

[15] Unfortunately, it's not remotely compelling logic, but yes, technically, there is some logic behind Kay's thought.

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:00 pm

[16] He's got a great smile!

20 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:02 pm

Nice little dance routine with Cervelli and the ump.

21 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:03 pm

16) He's cute, like a mascot.

22 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:07 pm

Man. What a fucking laser!

23 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:07 pm

ALEX!

FRICKIN' LAZER!

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:08 pm

[22] =)

25 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:08 pm

Damn, that was a Dave Winfield, Jim Rice, Mike Piazza homer.

26 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:16 pm

[24] We calls 'em like we sees 'em. : )

27 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:17 pm

Nice play, Robbie.

28 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:20 pm

[18] well you might not find it compelling, but it makes perfect sense to me. For 100 years MLB pushed the idea that the leagues wwre separate, independent entities whose champions met in a final showdown (the world series). There were separate league offices, separate umpires, separate traditions and after the DH, separate rules (even before the DH there a few different rules, like different tie breaker mechanisms), and completely independent schedules. Heck, in some years the leagues played different numbers of games.

Over the last 20 years or so MLB has increasngly blurred the distinction between the leagues. Now that the teams also play each other, just like in the NFL and NBA, I see no real strong reason to keep separate records, give separate awards, etc.

It doesn't matter a lot to me one way or another, but in my opinion, Kay is basically correct on this point.

29 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:24 pm

Sheeeeiiiiitttttttt! Hate missing out on seeing a triple.

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:27 pm

Not a good day for Gritner ... on the bases at least.

31 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:27 pm

Jesus. Does Gardner need to back to fucking AAA?

32 mhoward120   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:28 pm

Maybe C C should pinch run for Gardner

33 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:33 pm

Mmm. Bart is dealing.

34 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:34 pm

Finally. The Expo logo explained. I never knew.

35 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:40 pm

Curits is Awesome!

36 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:43 pm

Too fucking bad Cleveland. Go fuck yourselves.

37 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:47 pm

Pretty suspicious. Glad the umps tossed him, got to keep this shit under control

What's up with the Cleveland hats, the C instead of the odious chief wahoo? Is this new? Permanent?

38 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:49 pm

[37] Everything old is new again. THe "C" logo is actually pretty old...the Indians have used it off and on for the last few years.

39 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:50 pm

And there's chief wahoo on the sleeve. Le sigh

40 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:52 pm

OK, Kay needs to STFU on this Tony LaRussa thing.

41 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:55 pm
42 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:56 pm

Yeah, Talbot can thank Carmona for getting him run there.

43 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 2:59 pm

Wait 'til thelarmis finds out all needs to do to meet Kim Jones is to bring a sign to the stadium.

44 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:00 pm

Dooomed!

45 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:00 pm

Oh NO! Tolo rolled his ankle

46 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:00 pm

TESH!

Uh oh, Fat Bastard gimping.

47 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:01 pm

Oh crap!

48 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:01 pm

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK.

FUCK.

49 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:01 pm

great play, but oh-no.

50 randym77   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:02 pm

Jeez. Just not our week.

51 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:02 pm

Get hielo on that ankle.

52 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:02 pm

Weird, I can't really see where he hurt himself on the play.

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:03 pm

INJECT HIM WITH MORE FAT CELLS!

54 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:03 pm

[53] Yeah...it looks like a hamstring or achilles, because he didn't stumble or roll his ankle.

55 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:03 pm

Disaster. Between this and the decimation of my #2 favorite team giants it has not been a good year for health. If they lose this game I'll be suicidal

56 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:03 pm

[54] for [52].

57 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:03 pm

Oh, man. I don't think it was a hammy. Looked more like a calf. Let's hope it's a cramp.

Shite.

58 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:05 pm

I guess this is one of the pitfalls of having a, um, very large, aging, comeback veteran as one of the anchors of the pitching staff.

59 randym77   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:05 pm

[52] You could clearly see where he hurt himself, but there wasn't any particular reason - no stumble or anything. Just stepped wrong or something.

60 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:06 pm

[55] Giants my number 2 too. First place despite the injuries.

61 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:09 pm

I can't imagine getting a cramp while running like that... Between innings sure, but this looks like a hammy. 6-8 weeks, and who knows what he's like if/when he returns

62 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:10 pm

[60] you saw about Sanchez too?

That could have been worse

63 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:10 pm

Swish looked good in the OF! That was a long hit to be just a single.

64 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:13 pm

[62] Yeah, by his reaction, i thought he broke ribs or his collar bone.

65 randym77   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:13 pm

[62] That was awful. He looked like he was in agony. Giants have already signed Bill Hall to replace him.

66 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:17 pm

Let's Go SWISH!

67 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:17 pm

Up in the eyes, lace that shit. Way to go, son.

68 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:19 pm

A little bit o luck!

69 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:20 pm

It's beyond parody at this point. : /

70 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:20 pm

Georgie sometimes makes it hard to love him so much

71 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:20 pm

"I'm done with him. I'm so done with him. YOU ARE A RETARD!" The wife to Posada. "GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR DIAPER."

72 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:21 pm

I have a hard time imagining a worse baserunner than Posada.

73 Marek   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:21 pm

WTF? Why the bunt? Why the pickoff? So much for a big inning.

74 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:22 pm

Wasn't there a study showing Georgie as one of the couple worst base runners in history. Believe it

75 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:23 pm

Catcher-pitcher conference at the mound for Cervelli? You can't stop Frankie, you can only hope to contain him...

76 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:23 pm

74) Man, I'd like to see it. Because I sure fucking believe it.

LOL

77 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:25 pm

76 I think it was baseball prospectus

78 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:27 pm

Strained left hammy for Bartolo.

79 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:31 pm

There could have been a play at second on that hit to Swisher but neither Cano or Jeter covered. Lame.

80 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:36 pm

Are these people really doing the wave? The game is on the line and the number two starter was just lost

81 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:36 pm

78) That's not good. What? At least a month you figure?

82 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:37 pm

Now a balk. FUCK.

83 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:37 pm

Just get the out, Robertson.

84 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:37 pm

Seeing the wave at the (new) stadium makes me a little sad.

85 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:41 pm

[81] Probably - I'm getting the Cleveland feed, so they aren't speculating about it.

Gawd the Indians announcers are a bunch of whiners.

86 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:42 pm

David Robertson. Mr. Interesting. Phew.

87 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:43 pm

ONIONS!

88 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:45 pm

[48] I guess I don't find the question of 15-18 games (out of 162) compelling in the face of the fundamental difference between the 2 leagues. None of other professional leagues play such a small percentage of games between their 2 sub-divisions and, more importantly, none of them separates those 2 divisions via a difference in rules that fundamentally alters both the playing of and the results of the game itself.

I don't find the mere existence of inter-league play to be some sort of binary indicator as to whether there ought to be a combined set of awards or not. I mean if inter-league play was restricted to rivalry games, so that say the Yankees would only play the Mets (from the NL) for a grand total of 6-8 inter-league games, would that be compelling enough to argue for combined awards?

I wouldn't find it so, so I'm not sure why I should find a situation where the number of IL games is double that, but still measures a mere ~10% of the total games played, when measured against the fundamental DH difference between the 2 leagues.

Obviously, YMMV.

89 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:49 pm

That was a rope.

90 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:49 pm

Smoked. That's the way, Teix!

91 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:50 pm

TESH.

MORE FRIGGIN' LAZERS!

92 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:50 pm

And chillax a bit

93 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:51 pm

Teix just cost Mo a save!

94 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:52 pm

Holy macrel Curtis has caught the Jose Bautista, with Tex in hot pursuit! So there's that...

95 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:55 pm

So ... instead of just bringing Mo into the game once he got warm, you're gonna bring in NO-gan BUT keep Mo up just in case NO-gan fucks up?

So, best case scenario is an extended dry-hump for Mo???

96 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:56 pm

Boone looking good so far...

97 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:57 pm

Nice breaking ball.

98 Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:58 pm

Nice. Get well soon Colon. For the love of Mo!

99 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:58 pm

Nice win.

100 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:58 pm

The big picture is a bummer, with Colon getting hurt. The short term, nice game, beautiful dinger by Rodriguez, and more big hits from Granderson and Teixeira.

Fugh.

That win could be costly.

I wonder who is going to take the Fat Bastard's place?

I think my money is going to be on Noesi.

102 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2011 3:59 pm

[88] Maybe. I see the IL games as more or less the same as interconference games in the NFL. The percentage is higher in the NFL (25%, four games out of 16), but the schedule rotation is not very different.

103 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 11, 2011 4:00 pm

No harm from Blowgan. With all the injuries, he'd better get better.

Nice victory. Hope Tolo is back soon.

104 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2011 4:01 pm

Yes, nice win.

105 The Hawk   ~  Jun 11, 2011 5:21 pm
