is there any place in the city, outside of Uno, where you can get legit deep-dish??

2 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:09 pm

[1] Outside of Uno? No! Everyone's into that Neopolitan crap on a cracker around here now. Even Grimaldi's. You can actually have the real deal flown in from what I hear, though...

3 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:11 pm

Let's Go Gritner!

4 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:16 pm

Hey, my mlb.tv is broken. It cut away for the commercial, but we haven't scored any runs yet. That can't be right.

5 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:25 pm

That wasn't the SLASHER ... that was the SLAPPER!

6 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:25 pm

Hey, Michael Kay was taken by surprise on that one! Not 'driven', not 'hammered', nothing.

7 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:25 pm

[4] oh, yes we have!

8 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:25 pm

"Slapped"?

9 rbj   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:25 pm

[4] Yankees taking it easy, not scoring until the second. Lazy bums.

10 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:26 pm

i guess i can keep up my tradition of missing the early runs, then getting to the watering to watch the rest and hope for highlights. i'll be heading over soon...

11 Just Fair   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:26 pm

Huzzah, Robbie!

12 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:26 pm

Hi thelarmis. What time is it there? I know it's Mountain Time, but don't they have bizarre religious objections to DST or something?

13 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:26 pm

[6] he should've said: "Chai!"

14 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:27 pm

DRILLED!

That's a hell of single.

15 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:28 pm

"Looking up..."

"A single."

16 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:28 pm

[12] actually, it's Pacific Time. AZ "opted out" of the daylight savings and right now, it happens to be Pacific, so i'm in the same time zone as my buddy Cult...

ya know, i used to know why they didn't do the daylight savings thing, but can't remember for the life of me. i asked a native on the plane and she had no clue...

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:28 pm

Damn, less than a foot to freedom!

18 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:29 pm

Thelarmis, you should be watching. I mean, we love having you bantering, but the thing is... you would appreciate the view of the crowd behind home plate.

19 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:30 pm

of course, the shit sox just tied the tribe. reddick homer. i very much dislike the Fens. i know that's kinda blasphemous, but i've never ever liked that ballpark (or ballclub, for that matter)...

20 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:30 pm

Now Jorge, try not to make Chavvy run too much, ok?

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:31 pm

[20] Uh, that meant you were supposed to hit a homerun, not gound out ... sheesh.

22 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:33 pm

[18] ooh, supermodel blonde?! i'll be there soon!!! ; )

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:41 pm

[0] What is that disgusting looking pie in the blog photo? Please don't try and tell me that is "pizza"..there is only ONE kind of pizza ever allowed at the Banter and that is a Brooklyn slice. I shal be bringing this up with the Banter management!

Oh yeah, Robbie Cano, whaddayaknow!

24 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:42 pm

[23] Preach it, brother!

25 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:46 pm

Got it that time, Eric.

26 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:48 pm

It ain't pizza if ya can't fold it! >;)

27 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:48 pm

[22] No, not really. But still, your style, I think.

[23] [24] I'm more catholic, but I too say NO to deep dish.

28 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:50 pm

Oh fer...

29 thelarmis   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:50 pm

[23] Amen!

30 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:51 pm

Hmph.
Well, good job, Swish.

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:51 pm

C'mon Nova, time for a pitcher's best friend.

32 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:52 pm

I'm looking for a K here.

33 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:52 pm

Oh, that's a big part of his arsenal, I hear.

34 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:52 pm

[32] Yeah, probably better with the Gnat at the plate ...

35 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:54 pm

[16] From Answer.com:

When Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, Arizona tried observing daylight savings for a year and decided to not observe it after much negative reaction. They have never observed daylight savings since.

Think about it: if you were in the desert, the last thing you would want is extra daylight. Because of the hot climate, adding an extra hour of daylight would cause more of an energy crunch with AC working longer and harder. ( This part of the answer is retarded cause you are just changing the time, not magically moving the sun to make the daylight longer. The days are gonna be longer in summertime because the earth has tilted on its axis and we are receiving more light and you are gonna use the same amount of energy anyway. DST is just a way for big businesses to capitalize on the more sunlight during these months, Arizona just realized this was BS and refused to comply)

Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time (MST) year-round. The only exception in Arizona is the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, which does observe Daylight Saving Time.

36 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:55 pm

Damn.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:55 pm

DRIVEN!!

Well, in truth, that was pretty damn DRIVEN for Juan Pierre ...

38 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:56 pm

"Pierre always knew what he was..."
He always knew he was overrated?

39 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:57 pm

[37] Almost 2000 hits and very clutch..he knows how to win!

40 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:58 pm

Ah. Well, the K came second, unfortunately.

41 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 8:58 pm

The Tribe take a 5-3 lead on a two run HR by Santana. Wouldn't it be nice if the weekend series starts with the Yanks and Sox all even.

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:00 pm

[39] Still, 4 Ks in 3 innings, that good from Nova.

43 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:02 pm

[41] Yes, good. Good. Esp. compared to [40] Bedard :-)

44 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:02 pm

Curtis was robbed!

45 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:03 pm

Don't you make Robbie mad ... you wouldn't like it when he gets mad.

46 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:05 pm

Driven!!!

47 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:09 pm

Wow, Konerko really can't run.

48 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:11 pm

Fuck! Council is 0-45!

Jesus, but that's brutal.

49 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:11 pm

Oh man, NOTHING is going Adam Dunn's way.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:12 pm

C'mon Nova, get on top of the damn ball.

51 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:15 pm

This Chavez dude really swings the bat well.

52 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:19 pm

General question: What does "your comment is awaiting moderation" mean?

53 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:22 pm

Ouch, Flash!: "Congratulations to Craig Council for tying that record."

Now who's taking shots!

54 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:22 pm

[51] It means you have a potty mouth.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:23 pm

[51] Site hiccup most of the time.

56 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:23 pm

Flash keeps calling that a slider, but it really looks like a splitter to me.

57 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:26 pm

That's more like it.

58 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:28 pm

Great slide, Brett!

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:28 pm

SPEED KILLS!!!

60 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:29 pm

And that was closer than it should have been. How was it that close?

61 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:30 pm

[55] By Nova's own admission, it's kind of a slider, kind of a cutter ... a slutter!

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:31 pm

[60] Pitch F/X calls it a slider, Fangraphs classifies it as a cutter.

63 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:32 pm

Missed it, was Jeter playing small-ball?

64 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:33 pm

[60] Hehehe. The action seems much more vertical than lateral to me, but whatever.

Call it what you like.

65 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:34 pm

[59] or [60] not sure with this moderation thing.

Hard hit, good throw, Gardner a slight hesitation. Nice slide.

And I just heard Flash say, no Yankee pitching walks in 35 innings? Even with A Burnt Jet's outing yesterday? What's the record?

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:34 pm

Wow!

That was like a tennis shot!

Beautiful!

67 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:39 pm

Man, Nova!

What a weak hack!

68 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:39 pm

Freaking beautiful.
Russell rocks.

69 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:39 pm

NICE

70 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:42 pm

Pierre is Martinized?

Now let's bring the score truck around.

71 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:44 pm

Nice how Cano washed Pierre's face with his glove on the tag out.

72 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:46 pm

Here we go.
Let's put this game away, gentlemen.

73 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:48 pm

Jorge!

74 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:56 pm

Russell Martin is the epitome of professional.

Give Cashman a check for this one.

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:56 pm

Damn, I thought that was going to carry out.

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:56 pm

Damn ... just missed 2 HRs by that much.

Bah.

77 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 9:57 pm

[74] Hear, hear.

78 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:02 pm

Damn.

Well, here's hoping he starts a twenty game hitting streak tomorrow.

79 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:04 pm

Man, this Nova's good.

80 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:04 pm

So, huh. All of a sudden we have this amazing starting rotation.

81 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:05 pm

And he plays the position.

82 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:06 pm

Nova lox his rotation slot? (I know...groan)

83 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:12 pm

[82] I'd say if he puts up one more bagel in the eighth...

84 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:15 pm

That's something I've always wondered. On that play, Granderson cannot try for first, he's just out, because first is technically 'occupied' even though Jeter stole second. Right?

85 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:18 pm

Gah. Cap'n, oh my Cap'n.

86 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:18 pm

[84]I think he can try for first as Jeter is advancing, although not sure.

If the ball went all the way to the wall, he should be able to try for first as any runners would advance...no?

87 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:18 pm

Rare baserunning gaffe by Derek.

He pulled a Jorgie.

88 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:20 pm

{85] Who's going to fine Jeter in Kangaroo Court because of that running gaff?

89 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:22 pm

[88]I know, should be gaffe (not the fishing pole).

90 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:24 pm

[86] I think no.
First, notice that Curtis didn't try to run to first and wasn't tagged, just went to the dugout.

Second, if that's how it worked they would have Jeter forced at second, right? Or no? I think so.
I think the rule is that Jeter 'owns' first base until he safely reaches second (if he does), and as long as he owns it the batter can't try for it on a dropped third strike. I think.

91 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:24 pm

[88] [89] Mo is the judge, IIRC, so it will be him!

I just had to say, like the broken record I am, if the Yanks are going to end their 6-man rotation, could they please make AJ the odd pitcher out? Nova is on a roll (even taking the opponents into account, and AJ didn't do this against the same hitters).

92 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:26 pm

[91] And even as you type, Michael Kay reports Girardi's veto of that idea.

93 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:27 pm

Ah.
Girardi: "Can't bring in Dave. Nobody on base. Oh, that's better. Now Dave."

94 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:28 pm

[90] You're probably right. Where's William, he would clarify.

Dig the cheer for Nova's performance by Yankee fans at The Cell. That would never of happened just a few years ago.

95 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:29 pm

Standing O ... for the NOV-A!!!

96 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:32 pm

Brett, you genius.

97 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:33 pm

Cleveland wins 7-3!

98 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:33 pm

And those other Sox have lost.
Let's finish this and set up a nice series!

99 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:35 pm

My guess is Phil to AAA. If Nova flames out (ha!), Phil's back. If Nova is good, maybe Phil to the BP for Sept and the PS.

100 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:36 pm

So ... from SG over at RLYW.

Ivan Nova
Through 5/21: 226 BF, 9.3% BB/BF, 11.5% K/F

After that start, he worked in the bullpen to pick up a new pitch, his slutter, which he introduced his next start.

Since 5/28: 235 BF, 7.2% BB/BF, 17.4% K/BF

NUNE5?!?!?!?!?!?

::facepalm::

104 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:40 pm

[99] I thought Phil was out of options.

[102] [100] Interesting. So you think the slutter made the difference, or was it just a coincidence?

105 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:41 pm

[103] Don't follow you there. What, the bunt? Taking it off? Putting it back on with two strikes? Allowing Nuñez to bat in the first place?

106 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:42 pm

Flash called that!

107 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:43 pm

This has been one of Russell's best games.

CRUSHED.

DAMN.

109 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:43 pm

Man, that was one straight fastball.

110 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:44 pm

Ah Martin!
Bruney is still chapped that the Yankees moved him. He must be dying inside.

111 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:45 pm

[109] It's his signature pitch. Remember???

112 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:45 pm

[104] No, the slutter's been huge. I think 8 of the 10 Ks tonight came on it. It's the swing-and-miss pitch he was lacking.

113 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:49 pm

[111] Hahahahah!

114 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:53 pm

Hey!
Well, good for him.

115 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:54 pm

Charity pitch for Adam Dunn in a no consequence situation. Good for him.

Now...did I hear this right; the Yankee pitching has not allowed a walk in like 40 inning? Is that true?

116 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:57 pm

[115] Yup.

117 RIYank   ~  Aug 4, 2011 10:58 pm

I know, the no-walk thing is part of what's made this run so enjoyable. It's so much more fun to watch when our pitchers make the other team earn everything. (Although yesterday the earning was awful easy.)

118 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 4, 2011 11:04 pm

[117] But a A Burnt Jet (I will not let this anagram go) let them earn it big last night. I'm surprised he didn't walk anyone.
