Extra, Extra: Stormy Davis Weather Ahead

The Yanks start a series in Baltimore tonight. They are scheduled to play five games in the next four days. I say they get a couple in, maybe three.

Cliff’s go the preview.

Here’s the line-up:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

We’ll be around this weekend. Who knows what this weather will bring. The subways will stop running tomorrow afternoon as the city prepares for the worst. If you don’t see any updates it’s because we’ve lost power temporarily. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, although the wife did buy an ark today at Costco just in case.

Never mind Mother Nature:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

as long as all the washouts are re-scheduled for the day time.

yanks are 43-42 at night. 35-8 during the day.

wtf?

2 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 5:15 pm

Best of luck to all of you on the East Coast. Stock up on provisions (beer) and stay inside.

3 ms october   ~  Aug 26, 2011 5:28 pm

aj's turn :(

4 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 26, 2011 6:40 pm

Oh, no.

Why does it feel like every time I look up, it's AJ's turn?

It just sucks the life out of me to hear it. No, not quite that, more like feels me with trepidation and anxiety and indignation and defeatism and ill thoughts towards AJ...and all before the man has even thrown pitch number one.

5 MDF   ~  Aug 26, 2011 6:45 pm

Good luck and Godspeed to Banterites in the path of Irene.

Love Lewis Hine (I recommend clicking on the link that Alex provided, not least to see what an America without child labor laws was like).

6 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:14 pm

Pity that it's not A.J.'s start that gets rained out.

7 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:16 pm

"After three years together, the Yankees captain has broken up with Minka Kelly, the actress' representative told The Associated Press."
Damn! The guy has commitment issues.

Poor play by ARod. Afraid to get in front of the ball?

8 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:19 pm

Nasty Curveball for Strike 3.

9 Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:19 pm

Hey Alex and Jeter. Catch the gd ball wouldja!

10 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:21 pm

Phew.

11 Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:21 pm

Damn good thing ol' creaky knees was hobbling down the line.

12 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:36 pm

Must be hard for Singleton.

13 Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:37 pm

He just doesn't know where it's going to go when it leaves his hand. Oi! Every pitch.

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:39 pm

[4] I just logged on and thought the EXACT same thing, why am I always free to watch AJ starts?? Still didn't get to watch the Grand Salami game either :(

15 Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:44 pm

That's a stirke. If an ump cannot recognize a curve for a strike AJ is screwed.

16 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:50 pm

I feel so bad for this man.

This is brutal.

This is almost as bad as watching Coney in 2000.

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:50 pm

I want Joe G to leave him out there for 8 innings even if he gives up 30 runs.

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:51 pm

I hate AJ Burnett, so, So, SO much.

19 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:51 pm

I'm going to cry on AJ's behalf.

I'm serious, this is devastatingly pathetic.

20 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:52 pm

Jesus..

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:52 pm

[17] You may get your wish.

This is just fucking awful.

22 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:52 pm

[17] You may get that 30 runs. This isn't even frustrating anymore, it's just sad.

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:52 pm

[19] I don't think there's any way to come back from this for AJ..he's done in NY.

24 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:53 pm

Oh god, and then he couldn't pick up the baseball!

Christ, this is agonizing.

25 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:54 pm

Yup. There it is in a nutshell.

The last 2 years for AJ Burnett.

I don't care what they have to fucking eat over the winter, I don't care what they get in return, I just, never, ever want to see AJ Burnett pitch for this team again after the end of this season.

26 Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:54 pm

Dinner than a fire. I am not wasting one more second watching space cadet. Barf.

27 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:55 pm

Yay, some good fielding.

28 William J.   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:55 pm

Don't blame AJ Burnett for this outing. He is a terrible pitcher. There's nothing he can do about it. Joe Girardi and/or Brian Cashman are the ones who have a say in the matter, and they choose to lose games instead of own up to that reality. That's the definition of negligence.

29 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 7:56 pm

Yeah, that's the ticket AJ, blame the umpire.

It's always THE MAN, screwing you over, right?

Just keep telling yourself that ...

30 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:00 pm

What was the high-pitched scream from the stands? Creepy..

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:01 pm

[28] Well, yes, but it sure would be easier to excise AJ if the rest of the rotation wasn't collectively shitting the bed right now.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:02 pm

Meanwhile, yesterday's 2nd half gimme pile-on aside, the offense is making me throw up in my mouth right now ...

33 William J.   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:04 pm

[31] Other have been bad, but not AJ bad. Besides, with the rain this weekend, there was absolutely no reason to start AJ. Nova could have started.

34 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:04 pm

We want a rainout!

35 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:10 pm

[34] Yes, yes we do.

Meanwhile, FUCK the Orioles for their decision about the weekend.

Everyone else made reasonable decisions about rescheduling the weekend's games that will be affected by Irene, but they had to be a bag of dicks about it.

Serves them right if the Yankees players tell them to piss up a rope.

36 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:11 pm

See, this is insane. AJ could easily have 5 straight 1-2-3 innings now. I've been watching baseball for 25+ years, never seen anyone as frustrating to watch as AJ..maybe Andy Hawkins but was too young to realize at the time.

37 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:11 pm

[28] I've had more patience than most re: AJ, but I've been saying for at least 3 weeks now he has to go to the DL. Girardi will only support his players. This is Cashman's dept.
I'm not sure what a few weeks off will do for AJ, but he's a burden.

AJ Bur-den.

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:14 pm

[36] Ed Whitson.

39 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:15 pm

[38] Oh man, of course! Fan reaction was even worse towards Whitson, wasn't it?

40 ms october   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:19 pm

Just got in from a nice dinner.
I hope this is the proverbial last straw. Fucking enough!

And as to the o's refusing to reschedule that smells like buck schowalter's doing.

41 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:21 pm

[39] Whitson was just not cut out for NY. A.J. Seems to be able to handle the criticism, and acknowledge his suckitude. IIRC, Ed was a Bircher, Which even for me is really off the deep end.

Kimberley Jones lost all her clothes?! Cold shower time here.

42 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:22 pm

[40] Hey ms october! You should have gone for desert..I'm so sad I reserved some alone time from Mrs. Jazz to watch this game..time for mlb.com to watch the Grand Salami game!

43 ms october   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:24 pm

Hey mr ok jazz. Yep gotta get that alone time on a non aj start.

44 Ken Arneson   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:24 pm

Just wondering: is this six-run deficit my fault, too?

45 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:28 pm

[39] ok, you got my attention! what is this about a naked kim jones?! : o

btw, Irene's not in my path, but i did stock up on extra beer, just in case! mind you, i already had an entire fridge filled with beer, but i couldn't pass up another sixer! : )

46 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:30 pm

[45] Never hurts to be prepared. Got extra beer & wine myself. Just in case a hurricane hits Toledo

47 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:30 pm

[44] well, if it is, you're balancing it out nicely with the A's 7-run lead on boston!

48 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:30 pm

[46] ok, but what about kim jones?!?! ; )

49 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:31 pm

wow. aj can't even strike a batter out and get the damn out. walks, wild pitches, eleventy billion doubles in a row.

how bout hitting this guy, loading the bases, then giving up a granny?

50 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:32 pm

Technically not an error, but still 4th bad play this game.

51 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:34 pm

[48] she lost all her clothes on the trip to Baltimore, meaning her luggage, but the way Kay said it, it sounded like she got stripped naked.

52 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:35 pm

[41] Well, AJ did manage to have his best year 1st ... AND pitch an important game leading to a WS win. Without 2009, I think we'd be seeing a Whitson level of hatred.

As for the Bircher thing, ol' Eddie just picked the wrong time to be a nutjob, he'd fit right in these days ...

53 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:35 pm

ok, Fat Liar's homerun is definitely on Ken.

54 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:36 pm

[51] i like the latter image, thank you very much. very much!

55 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:38 pm

Comeback time. Weren't we down 7-1 last night?

56 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:39 pm

i'm so glad jorgie's been doing better!

57 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:47 pm

Vlad popped up, ready to complain, but then remembered it's 7-1.

58 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:47 pm

AJ's just padding his stats now. Good thing they caught Vladimir.

59 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:48 pm

aj is beyond awful.

60 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:48 pm

Did I mention how much I hate AJ Burnett???

Yeah, probably ...

61 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:49 pm

Wow, Ken just called Randolph, "Windmill Willie".

Hmmm ...

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:51 pm

[36] Here's the other thing ... that I just sorta came up with.

With Andy Hawkins, his sucking was much less irritating, mostly because he had shitty stuff. When you throw slop and then suck ... well, is it really all that unexpected?

But AJ doesn't throw slop, he's got top-notch stuff ... and I'd argue that's much the reason that it's SO damn tough to watch him shit the bed, time, after time, after time ...

63 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:51 pm

Nice throw by DoesItall-Cano.

64 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:52 pm

Does AJ has a No-Trade contract?

65 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:53 pm

if ya think about it, only 7 of the 8 Oriole hits have been for extra bases. could be all 8...

66 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:54 pm

Has AJ ever stranded a runner on third?

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:55 pm

[62] Well, not "top notch", really, not anymore. But above average, surely.

68 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:56 pm

oh good, a walk.

aj's already at 107 pitches. i say leave him out there for a complete game. 273 pitches. might take 2+ seasons to come back from. that works out quite well.

69 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:56 pm

oh, a wild pitch!

brilliant!

what a fabulous idea. terrific thinking, aj.

70 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:57 pm

77 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 8:59 pm

[71] oh, definitely. this is kinda fun to follow.

what will he ever do next?!

78 thelarmis   ~  Aug 26, 2011 9:00 pm

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 9:02 pm

[75] Well, somebody took Vernon Wells contract AND gave away a 900+ OPS player in the bargain ... so, it only takes one ... Ned Colletti, Brian Sabean, Kenny Williams ... who knows, if the Yankees are willing to eat contract, there probably is a sucker/strike> value bettor out there.

111 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 26, 2011 9:32 pm

I'm just tuning in to the game now. This had better be the last start that A.J. Burnett makes for the Yankees this year. I don't want to hear anymore of the Cashman/Girardi nonsense of "We've got to get him straightened out."

Time to the go the bullpen and let him work out the problems for the final five weeks. Enough already.

Problem with Cashman and Girardi is they've been smoking some buds from Cheech and Chong when they get around to talking about Burnett. They sound as reasonable and articulate as Cheech and Chong on that subject.

Something made me look up Barry Zito (did someone mention him earlier?) and I came across this funny tidbit from wikipedia:

"Zito's fastball has hovered between 78–82 mph.[27] He augments it with a circle changeup and a traditional "12-to-6" curveball that he uses as a homerun pitch."
