[1] I just finished "Shame" by Salman Rushdie, HIGHLY recommended! Learned a lot about Pakistan from that one.

[1,2] Er..missed the "baseball" part of that comment, sorry Raging. It may be out of print but if you ca get a copy of "Beisbol!" by John Krich it's worth the effort. He spent several months in the 1980s wandering Central & South America checking out the baseball scene there.

1) What are you looking to read? Baseball fiction? Biography, analysis? Any particular period? Or interest?
