So the big lug was going to come back after all.

"The traveling, I hate it; the playing, I love it."

3 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 5:38 pm

Yeah! Mo' Mo

4 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 5:40 pm

Hey, you know how all fans (and we are certainly no exception) have a tendency to moralize their team's failings? Red Sox Nation might have good grounds.
Nice, Josh!

5 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 5:46 pm

A tad off topic, but I'm thinking about it.
I don't want it, but I'm very curious what kind of contract Hamilton will get. My guess is Texas will resign him, but I'm wondering his fair market value. As good as he is, his past performance hasn't been tremendous.

He's 32, and while in his prime, his best years are behind him.
His career stat line is: .313, .370, .556, .926, 139 OPS+.
His playing time has been inconsistant, so he has 'only' averaged 4 WAR in his 5 year career (thru 2011). He had a 8.4 WAR in 2010, and has 2.4(!!!) WAR already this year.

So..............
Any guesses?
Is he worth 6/$120m?
More?

6 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 5:48 pm

[4} HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you see the poll?
75% of Fans want to DUMP HIM!!!!!!!

7 joe   ~  May 9, 2012 5:53 pm

[6] I saw that - pretty funny. Does RSN like any of their marquee players? They must still like Pedroia...

8 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:01 pm

The polls are bullshit, but RSN is very out of love with Josh.

Yeah, they love Dusty, and they still love Papi. Lester, still warm.

Ummmm.

That might be it.

9 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 6:06 pm

[6] Imagine if AJ Burnett played for the Sox. 75% would have advocated for euthanasia.

10 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 6:07 pm

It's funny that they are called the 'Fenway Faithful', as they are the least faithful fans is all of Sports-dom. I love when the Sox lose, but I don't hate the team. I do however, really hate the fans. Massholes is not strong enough.

11 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:16 pm

Meanwhile, back in the Bronx...
Not a great start.

12 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 6:16 pm

mlb.com TV just crashed...sigh..

13 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:21 pm

Uh oh.

14 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:21 pm

Your mission, David, should you decide to accept it: get out of a bases loaded jam.

15 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:22 pm

[12] ESPN is showing it free online.

16 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:24 pm

Way to go, kid.

17 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:27 pm

Bap, snap, base hit.

18 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 6:30 pm

WHat's the story with John Sterling, he is missing tonight's game?

19 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 6:32 pm

That's the Robbie I know and love. : )

20 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 6:32 pm

Atta boy, Rob, Jete!

21 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 6:32 pm

[18] They just announced that there was a power failure, and the radio feed was lost, and they went to the TV feed for audio. Fixed now.

And Cano might be coming back!

22 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:32 pm

Rob!
O'Brien was all over that "Cano's first inning numbers are terrible."

23 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 6:33 pm

More Early Runs!

24 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 6:33 pm

Never mind, Kay just explained it.
Suzyn is rocking heavy Inca-style necklace and ear-ring combo tonight. Stylish!

25 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:33 pm

[21] ESPN hasn't announced that yet.
I generally don't mind O'Brien, but this is not his best game.

26 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:37 pm

Not bad. Teix is going to come around. You heard it here first.

27 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 6:37 pm

[24] And some kind of hip Soho jacket thing.

28 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 6:37 pm

[25] How does that work with ESPN and YES both broadcasting the game?

So, is Phelps on a Joba-Rules type thing tonight?

29 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 6:37 pm

[26] From your lips...

30 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 6:38 pm

[27] "My Gawd, weeping, you juss would not BELIEVE how good a deal I gawt on these at The Machu Pichu shop in SOHO!"

31 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:40 pm

[28] I don't know -- it happens a lot. I guess YES has the rights even when there's a national broadcast. It happens with TBS, too.

32 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 6:41 pm

[30] Hahahahahah!

33 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:43 pm

Well that was different. From the first inning.

In the first I was thinking, "Must be some 'Dave' thing, gotta load the bases before retiring the side."

34 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 6:45 pm

[31] Game's not on Extree Inninges though, even though it usually is even with a TBS broadcast.

Evening folks.

35 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:49 pm

[34] I don't have Extra Innings. Just mlb.tv.

36 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:52 pm

Not a DP. So, okay.

37 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:54 pm

He'll walk Jeter.

38 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 6:54 pm

Wonderful. #@#$@#$@#$@#$

39 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 6:54 pm

Nope.
Damn!
Disappointing.

40 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:05 pm

Hey, David Phelps. Waddya know.

41 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 7:14 pm

Luke Scott = Barnabas Collins

42 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 7:19 pm

Mr. Phelps has accepted the assignment.

43 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:19 pm

Hmmmm.
Sorry, Andy, no room for you!

44 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 7:25 pm

Will these guys ever stop talking about the shift and going the other way. Fuck me.

45 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 7:34 pm

I really do not like Ben Zobrist.

46 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 7:36 pm

[44] But, the shift! It's only been around since Ted Williams, if not earlier.

47 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 7:37 pm

[46] And Leiter clearly has not read up on why Maddon does it and where he gets his information.

48 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:40 pm

Royals rough up Lestah in the first. 3-0.

49 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 7:40 pm

It's clearly my fault. This is the only inning I've seen Phelps pitch other than the 1st. Crud.

50 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:41 pm

Okay, David, this is it! This is your test.
Now get to work. Do it.

51 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:42 pm

Doesn't get to do the test.
Okay. Boone in to walk Matt Joyce, I guess.

52 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 7:43 pm

[47] They're also talking about the shift on ESPN

[48] Maybe he can join Josh on the golf course.

53 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:45 pm

Okay, where the hell is Boone Logan? And who was that guy???

54 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 7:47 pm

Boone was a man, yes a big man.

55 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 7:49 pm

And tonight's off-topic:
Mo will make $15m this year, to basically have surgery and rehab.
Next year, what will he expect for salary?
How much can you give a guy, coming back from a difficult injury, who is 43 years old?

Yes, I know it's Mo, but still... I don't want to get clobbered financially.

What do you think he signs for?

56 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 7:50 pm

[55] Honestly? One year, again at $15M.
They could squeeze him a little and he'd take less, but they won't.
That's my prediction.

57 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 7:52 pm

[56] Agree

58 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 7:57 pm

1 year, $15 million. It's Mo, you make it up in jersey sales.

Anyone seen the Score Truck? Can't believe there's only a single delivery.

59 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:02 pm

Lester out after two innings. Not sure why.

Damn, Red Sox Nation is fucked. What a season.

60 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:02 pm

Oh, no, my mistake -- misunderstood what I was seeing.

61 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 8:07 pm

Nice hit... but what a cookie! I saw that hitting the facade.

62 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:11 pm

Bases loaded one out, Papi at the plate...

63 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 8:11 pm

What the fuck are you looking at, Teix?

64 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:17 pm

Oh, we're back.
Well, Papi struck out but A-Gon cleared the bases with a double. 3-3.

Good AB by Swish, huh?

65 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:20 pm

Why is Michael Kay talking about Dan Rather? I'm sure Al Leiter loved that!

66 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:23 pm

Wow.
Soriano is the EIG, right?

67 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 8:31 pm

An extra run sure would be nice.

68 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:35 pm

Albert Pujols is hitting .189.

69 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:37 pm

Yeah, thanks, Jeff, this game was moving along much too quickly. Better throw over eighteen times to be sure Russell Martin doesn't steal.

70 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 8:40 pm

[69] You know how dangerous non-Molina catchers are.

71 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:40 pm

[69] Russell Coltrane looks like he's starting to rock a Moustache Pete look.

72 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:41 pm

I wish Soriano were not pitching.

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 8:42 pm

Agggggghh, fuck.

74 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:42 pm

GODDAMIT.

Oh, man, that's brutal.

75 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 8:42 pm

Yargh!

76 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:43 pm

God, that's excruciating.

77 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 8:43 pm

I miss Mo.

78 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:44 pm

Ah, it's Mr. Civilized Luke Scott! Ra So, please K him then get a double play!

79 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:45 pm

[78] Thank you.

80 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 8:46 pm

Wowzers!

81 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:47 pm

Adrenaline.

82 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:47 pm

Teix's D is to Giambino's D as what is to what?

83 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:48 pm

Oh, is that right, Michael? That's why it was so important to get the force at second?
It's good to have such an experienced, knowledgeable play-by-play guy. He understands all the angles.

84 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:48 pm

[82] sushi : Mrs. Paul's Fish Sticks?

85 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:50 pm

Eeeeeexxxxxhhhhhhale.

86 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 8:50 pm

Nothing like a lazy pop out to end a stressful inning.

87 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:51 pm

[84] Tee-hee..
So Ra So does it! But does Robertson have anything left after last night?

88 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 8:52 pm

I'll take that. But can Score Truck make another visit? Don't want Mo to have a highwire act -- oh, Mo, this isn't going to be easy.

89 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 8:55 pm

[82] Anna Nicole Smith to Twiggy?

90 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 8:55 pm

The Chessmaster just might bring in Garcia to finish this one. ; )

91 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 8:55 pm

A-Rod's stats aren't so bad..why dies it feel like he's not having a good year?

92 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 8:57 pm

[91] ARod's hits are akin to the blind squirrel.

93 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 8:58 pm

A-Rod started pretty badly, but he's been decent recently. But not really great, so it feels like he never broke out.

94 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:00 pm

Lay one down the third base line, Teix. Just fucking once!

95 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 9:01 pm

Hard luck.

96 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:03 pm

Is he nervous? Do you think he's really nervous, or just regular?

97 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 9:04 pm

FeckFeckFeck

98 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:04 pm

99 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 9:05 pm

Swish!! WTF were you throwing to 3rd???

103 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 9:06 pm

[83] (Yes, he does, doesn't he.)

104 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 9:06 pm

Smuckers!

105 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 9:08 pm

I do not approve of a post-Mo era. Nope, not at all.

106 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:08 pm

David Robertson's act is a lot less cute in the ninth inning

107 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:08 pm

Not hammering.

108 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 9:08 pm

Well this is interesting.

109 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:09 pm

1-2-3 double play.

110 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 9:09 pm

[102] Don't mean to nitpick, Jazz, but WTF means "what the fuck," not "why the fuck." ;>)

111 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:11 pm

Nobody's going to hit that pitch.

112 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:11 pm

BANG.
Nailed.

Next.

113 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2012 9:11 pm

K!

[110} I left out "for" at the end. I know what WTF means!! :)

114 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:12 pm

My gosh, Michael, that's right! A double play and the game's over!

This sabermetric stuff is great.

115 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 9:12 pm

Knicks are done

116 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:13 pm

OK Houdini, drop the Hammer again and let's close this one out!

117 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 9:13 pm

Oh well.

118 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:13 pm

119 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:13 pm

Wow, that was closer than I expected. Swish has a cannon.

120 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:14 pm

Yeah, this isn't gonna work.

121 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 9:14 pm

Tied up.

122 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:14 pm

Or not.

Cripes. I thought Swisher had him. A little too far out to right field.

123 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:14 pm

{122] I originally thought he missed the plate

124 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:15 pm

[120] Its not like the Hammer is going to Houdini himself into a bases loaded situation every time he comes in to close a game.

I also expect he'll see a lot more 3 run leads than 1 run leads.

125 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 9:15 pm

Great pickup on a shorthop by Martin. That could have been another run for TB.

126 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:16 pm

[124] Also, you know, this is the first run he's given up all year.

What worries me is Soriano, personally.

127 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 9:16 pm

Why'd he fall down?

128 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:16 pm

Oh, I, uh, typed that a little too soon.

Ugh.

129 rbj   ~  May 9, 2012 9:17 pm

Good night.

130 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:17 pm

[124] Well, he's done it two nights in a row. He did it all last year.

Worst case scenario.

132 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 9:17 pm

133 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:17 pm

I miss Mo.

134 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:18 pm

Not according to plan, but it seems Joyce hurt himself.

Umm . . . Joe, I don't think this is the time to pull the Hammer. Next guy isn't going to homer too.

135 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2012 9:18 pm

WFT!

136 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:18 pm

There's 3 hours down the tubes. Bollocks! Hope Joyce goes on the dl.

137 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:20 pm

[134] I guess it was determined that now was a great time to start with MATCHUPS again.

I hate Joe Girardi. I hate everyone not named Mariano Rivera. We're positive he can't pitch on crutches?

138 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 9:20 pm

[136] You can't mean that? Just a momentary thought?

139 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:21 pm

And people seriously wonder why I didn't want to give Joe Girardi two lefties. He can't fucking help himself.

140 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:21 pm

I miss Brett.

141 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:21 pm

[130] He faced 19 batters last year with the bases loaded, out of 272 total batters faced - about 7%.

Now, for me, I will be quite glad when Gardner is back so we don't have to see the adventures of "I'm not a left fielder" in left filed.

142 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2012 9:23 pm

White Castle is still in business?

143 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:24 pm

I also wish I didn't have to listen to the dummies on ESPN start to speculate about when Soriano takes over as the closer from Robertson. Idiots. Its one freakin' game.

Its also not like Mo never blew a game either from time to time. Sheesh.

144 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:26 pm

[143] I don't want Soriano either.

And two games.

145 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 9:27 pm

Damn, Robertson had Joyce 0-2 before the homerun.

146 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:28 pm

OK, here we go - 4 runs is nothing for this offense, especially at home.

147 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:32 pm

[144] They won last night.

148 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 9, 2012 9:32 pm

Robertson will bounce back. Might be for the best.

CC Tomorrow!

149 Shaun P.   ~  May 9, 2012 9:33 pm

But not tonight - c'est la vie. Tomorrow's another game.

150 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:33 pm

[138] I am not averse to Joyce going on the dl after what looked to be twisting his ankle on a go ahead homer in the 9th. This is first game of the year that will make me give an extra toss and turn in bed. Ugh.

151 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:33 pm

The Hammer will be back to his usual self next appearance. Bank it.

152 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:34 pm

[148] It's not for the best. :-)
But, he will bounce back.

153 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:36 pm

[144] Because Jim Joyce had a cab to catch.

I like Robertson. He hasn't pitched well at all these two games. Its very hard to paint seven baserunners (including three walks) in 1.2 IP as anything but horrendous.

154 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:43 pm

Jonathan Broxton in to close for KC. I didn't realize they had Broxton.

155 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2012 9:51 pm

{154] We saw him last week.

156 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2012 9:52 pm

Gameday tell me Broxton is off to a shaky start.

157 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:58 pm

[156] No control.
[155] I wasn't watching.

158 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 9:58 pm

He throws hard.
He's a Royale with Cheese.

159 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2012 10:03 pm

They keep saying, "There's no safety net for Robertson anymore..."

But how was Mo ever a "safety net" for anyone? I mean, it's not like Mo would come in to bail Robertson out of a jam or anything.

Why do they keep referring to Mo as a safety net in that way?

160 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2012 10:06 pm

Wow. Tonight, Broxton is Houdini.

Sox lose. But Toronto won.

[159] Oh, because it's much easier than thinking of something that's original and makes sense.

Indeed.

It sure would be nice to have these two games against Tampa in the win column.

In the long list of things to gripe about this year, Mo's career-threatening injury, Pineda's career-threatening injury, Montero's absence, the crappy start for the middle of the order, and the crappy start by almost all the starters, these two blown games to the Rays by the otherwise awesome bullpen somehow are as annoying as anything other than the injuries.

"Two blown games"? What do you mean?

They won the first game of the series thanks to excellent work by the bullpen, including Robertson's first save as "the closer."

Or am I dreaming....?

[165] the first game of the season was a blown save by rivera vs the rays.
