"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

You Must Remember This…

On this date in 2007 the Yankees were 20-24.  By May 29, they were 21-29.

Today, they are .500. Tied with the Red Sox (and a game better than the Tigers) but only 5.5 out of first.

1. Jeter SS
2. Granderson CF
3. Cano 2B
4. Rodriguez 3B
5. Ibanez DH
6. Swisher RF
7. Teixeira 1B
8. Martin C
9. Wise LF

Never mind the beautiful friendship, Rick, get us a goddamned win.

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

[0] On this date in 2007...

While the Yankees did storm back to take the WC spot, I'm not sure 2007 is the most inspiring season to look to.

2 RagingTartabull   ~  May 22, 2012 4:47 pm

I have a soft spot for that wacky '07 team

3 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 5:24 pm

The whole thing is my fault. I left the country, and the Yankees sucked.
But I'm back now. Winning streak begins today.

4 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 5:29 pm

[3] Fun and games somewhere nice, I hope?

5 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 5:36 pm

[3] Next time, don't take the bats with you. The guys need them so they can load the bases with no outs and then not drive anyone in.

6 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 5:43 pm

Wow, they're 0-10 in games they in which they fail to hit a homerun.

7 The Hawk   ~  May 22, 2012 5:58 pm

Fire Girardi

8 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 6:03 pm

Wow, am I amped and psyched. We're not behind yet!

9 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 6:04 pm

Chien-Ming Wang is back with the Nats, though as a reliever. I wish him much success.

10 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 6:05 pm

Oh wait, YES has a soccer game on. My bad.

11 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 6:05 pm

My9 - nevermind.

12 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:07 pm

[4] Not really fun and games, but nice -- Göteborg.

13 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:10 pm

[9] Hear, hear.

[12] Nice.

14 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:10 pm

[12] I'm guessing there's a cathedral there?

15 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:12 pm

[14] There is, although it's a relatively new and industrial city.

16 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:13 pm

Good Phil.

17 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:14 pm

[15] I do love a cathedral.

18 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:16 pm

[17] You seem like the type.

They got a couple three in Manhattan, just sayin'.

19 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:17 pm

I hope Derek stabilizes soon.
I'd to look up in two weeks and see him under .300.

20 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:18 pm

[18] :) They do. In fact, St. John the Divine (which happens to be where I was baptized) will be the largest cathedral in the world when they get around to finishing it.

21 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:22 pm

Another scoreless inning.

22 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:27 pm

[20] Indeed -- Cathedral Parkway.

But I doubt that it just happens to be where you were baptized! I'm guess they chose the baptism site largely because the cathedral was there. Then again, what do I know from baptism?

23 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:28 pm

There's a K! Phil's been wanting one. I guess Jeff Francouer is just the ticket.

Francoeur?

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 6:28 pm

Phil with conviction. Locating fastball, sharp curveball. Keep it up, dude.

25 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 6:32 pm

Does anyone else find they are reminded of Jorge when Raul bats? Maybe it's just me.

26 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:34 pm

Nice hitting, Teix!

27 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:35 pm

[25] Omg, yes!

No, it's not you!

I remarked on that a few days ago...I caught a peripheral glimpse of him and I swear for a split second I thought Jorgie was up.

28 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:36 pm

[22] Hahahhahaha!

29 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 22, 2012 6:39 pm

[22][28] Wow, weeping & RI Yank banterin' better than Kenny and O'Neil tonight.

Oh no..George Brett in the booth..that shirt is blinding me!

30 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 6:41 pm

[25] Yup... something about the crouchstance.

31 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:42 pm

Huh.

Trailing again.

32 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:45 pm

Look at Phil, painting corners, getting backwards K's!

33 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:46 pm

Mario Mendoza (of the Mendoza line, no?)! He robbed Brett of three hits, contributing to his failure to hit .400.

34 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:47 pm

[29} :))

35 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 6:51 pm

Horsheshit at bat, Wise!

36 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 6:53 pm

sigh.

37 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:53 pm

Jesus.

This team is killing me.

They're just breaking my balls again and again and again.

38 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 6:58 pm

New York YaaaaaanKEES, you're BREAK-ing my BALLS
YOU'RE shaking my CON-fi-DENCE DAI-ly..
New York YaaaaaaanKEES, I'm down on my knees
We're BEG-ging you DRIVE some runs HOME.
Ho-ho-HOME....

39 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:00 pm

Phil's biggest flaw.

40 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:05 pm

Way to man up for the 2 blondes you're sitting next to. Are you kidding me? Yeesh!

41 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:06 pm

Nice, Rob.

42 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:07 pm

Rocket Robbie. Kablooooey!

43 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:07 pm

[40] hahahah

44 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:07 pm

Robbie!

45 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:07 pm

At least somebody can still hit.

46 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:08 pm

It's nice they got a homerun because now that means that officially they're have a chance to win this game.

47 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:09 pm

We really need Rob to hit fourth now. I know, the difference is supposed to be trivial, according to line-up analysis, but it just makes sense now.

48 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:09 pm

Uh oh!

Was it wise of Alex to get himself in scoring position?

49 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:10 pm

As good as a double

50 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:11 pm

6 for 73? Ouch.

Make it 74.

51 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:12 pm

So Alex knows the team can't hit with RISP so what does he do? He steals second.

Pop-up, weak-ass three-pitch K.

How long can this go on?

52 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:15 pm

Hughes just needs to keep this at bay. Yanks will be scoring runs.

53 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:21 pm

[48] ARod was planning on stealing 3rd, and then stealing Home... but the batters didn't give him enough time.

54 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:22 pm

Nice job Hughesie.

55 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:22 pm

Nice k.

56 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:25 pm

Wayto go Tex. Shift this! And the hustle. The dreaded scoring position!

57 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:25 pm

A man second. No outs. Unleash the suck. ; )

58 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:26 pm

oh JESUS.

59 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:27 pm

We talk about Alex having a long swing, but man, Russell just takes huge hacks constantly.

60 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 7:27 pm

Hot damn, another 0-3 coming up

61 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:28 pm

Why the hell doesn't Keller hold these guys up at first?
DOESN'T HE KNOW ABOUT RISPFAIL?!?!?!?!?!?

62 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:28 pm

We. Will. Take it.

63 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:29 pm

sac... bunt... WP... passed ball...
LET'S GO!!!!!!!!

64 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:29 pm

Uh oh, first and second, no outs...

65 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:30 pm

Uh Oh. Bases Loaded....

66 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:30 pm

I hate bunts, but that was fucking beautiful.

67 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 7:30 pm

even better...

68 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:30 pm

Did you guys know their 3rd baseman Mous went SECOND overall in the draft?

69 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:31 pm

Oh no, bases loaded, no outs. Is it going to be a triple play?

70 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:31 pm

Melky?

For real?

71 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:31 pm

Any chance this is not a DP coming?

72 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:31 pm

MAN, that 1-1 pitch was close...

73 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:32 pm

2nd Grand Slam of his career right here, let's GO

74 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:33 pm

Got to love the anticipation!

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:33 pm

Heh.
The curse is broken.

78 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:33 pm

AND THE CURSE IS LIFTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

79 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 7:34 pm

(73) I'll take ARE YOU HIGH? for $400, Alex

80 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:34 pm

Wait, what happened?

81 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:34 pm

[77] We need seconds shown on the time display....

82 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:35 pm

[81] Do not. We know all we need to know: I was first.

83 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:36 pm

Tough ab so far...

84 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:36 pm

RBI.

85 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:36 pm

Okay, we'll take it. Baby steps motherfucker. But now, those two runs need to get home.

86 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:37 pm

Go Time Alex.

87 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:37 pm

Huh.
And as above: I hate the IBB, but this seems like a no-brainer, I have to admit.

88 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:37 pm

It's a slap in the face, Alex. Make them pay!

89 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:38 pm

OK Alex.... it's PRIDE time..........

90 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:38 pm

How A-Rod has fallen.

91 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:38 pm

DAG, that first pitch looked tasty.

92 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

[91] I thought it was inside.

93 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Missed it. Now he'll K on a breaking ball.

94 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Cano was 6 for 12 against this guy, with 3 HRs, 2 of which were Grannies.

95 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Oh ferfuck's sake. : (

96 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Oh, Alex.

98 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Yup.

99 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:39 pm

Yep.
The IBB is vindicated.

But there is another...

100 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:40 pm

Nice swing.

101 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 7:41 pm

Well... if they push the fences back 40', Phil could hold onto this lead.

102 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 7:42 pm

Wheeeeeeew. (That shrieking foul.)

103 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 7:42 pm

Oy

104 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:43 pm

Ok, two runs!

We're in no position not to appreciate the two.

105 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:43 pm

So wack. I'm taking bets. How long before Hughes gives it back? I say 2 batters.

106 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:45 pm

Here comes the 2 run homer.

107 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 22, 2012 7:45 pm

[70] What about Melky?

108 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:47 pm

Okay, good job. I'm happy to lose the bet.

109 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:48 pm

There's two, well done, well done.

110 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:49 pm

Check out Hughes!

111 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:49 pm

[107] Apparently he leads the major leagues in hits.

112 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:50 pm

Same page, fellas.

113 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 7:51 pm

C'mon Phil.

114 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 7:52 pm

116 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:53 pm

Way to go, Phil.

117 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 7:59 pm

Still no Mo.

118 The Hawk   ~  May 22, 2012 7:59 pm

I was always a Melky booster, good to see him doing well. William was with me on that. Where is ol' William anyway? Too busy with his own stuff I suppose

119 Chyll Will   ~  May 22, 2012 8:00 pm

[111] Why is that a surprise? I sometimes there's asbestos in the clubhouse the way most of our farm-grown guys seem to suffer when the reach the bigs (but often do well when they leave). Melky was a top prospect at one point, so we knew he had it in him. I just hope we don't have a repeat of the 80ks when the Yanks gave away top prospects who went on to good careers for OPP who maintained a status quo of mediocrity.

120 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 22, 2012 8:01 pm

[118] He tweets on average about 62,000 times every game. Worth following!

[111] Wow. Giants really won on that trade.

121 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 8:01 pm

[118] I liked him since his first AB, he drew a big walk off of Schilling, which impressed me.

122 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:03 pm

I never liked the Melk man but am pleased he's doing well.

123 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:04 pm

And now my TV has been taken over by the WIFE and the finale of Dancing with the Stars. Gameday, John and Suzyn, commerical breaks, and you guys. LET's GO!

124 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 8:10 pm

[121] Damn! I remember that AB you're talking about. I had to go back and check BR but Melky played only 6 games in July of 05. First 4 vs. Cleveland and then 2 vs. Boston. He came back in 07 and played 136 games.

125 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 8:12 pm

[123] Stranded with the Stars to Dancing with the Stars. At least your guaranteed some action.

126 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:13 pm

Like this. A slim lead against the doormat of that powerhouse AL Central division (I know the Twins are worse this year). Hopefully tonight, Soriano does what he always wanted to do.

I always liked Melky, but he had to go for Cano's sake.

127 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:13 pm

125) And they show plenty of skin of those lovely dancers. Hey Now.

128 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:14 pm

129 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:16 pm

Sorry Jetes, that was a strike.

138 mhoward120   ~  May 22, 2012 8:26 pm

(134) Tex had no chance

139 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:27 pm

Tex might have gotten there if he broke right away? You think Logan has practiced that play since he stood on the mound in T-Ball?

And, when Tex looked perplexed, he reminds me of the the mean teacher on the bicycle (before she becomes the wicked witch) in the Wizard of Oz.

140 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:28 pm

Ok, that's one.

[139] teacher? Wasn't she the landlord?

Never was a big Judy Garland fan..but love the movie of course.

143 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 8:29 pm

The fact that that's ruled a hit instead of an E1 is a disgrace to scoring. One of many I must add. : )

149 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:31 pm

Nice lucky double play. Now some insurance for Soriano, please.

150 rbj   ~  May 22, 2012 8:33 pm

Insurance run please.

151 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:35 pm

That slow-mo of Tex making the catch was FUNNY. See...entertainment of some sort watching Yankee games.

152 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:37 pm

148) So I was wrong.

153 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:38 pm

154 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:39 pm

So you wanna be the closer...well, get er done, a hole.

155 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 8:40 pm

I can't believe we have to watch Mo not being on the mound like this, day in, day out.

171 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:46 pm

Did they get the call right? Or was he safe?

172 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 22, 2012 8:46 pm

That was exhilarating! Not so sure he was out.

Yankee win! It's a long season.

173 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 22, 2012 8:47 pm

Damn. Real close. What an arm. I wonder if Nuney makes that throw? ; )

174 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 22, 2012 8:47 pm

Man, talk about a narrow victory.

In every way.

There's our great triumph, Team.

Winning on fumes.

[173] We can laugh NOW! :)

Well done team, ekeing out a W over the mighty..Royals...

176 Alex Belth   ~  May 22, 2012 8:49 pm

Well, Alex knew he had to rush and he couldn't get his body moving to first, so that was all arm, hurrying by not throwing it away. Though the throw was high and wide, that's all instinct and not only the final out but if the call goes the other way the lead is gone.

Yanks needed a break. Glad, for a night, they got one.

The 2012 season turnaround has officially begun

178 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 8:53 pm

Any kudos here for Hughes?

179 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 22, 2012 9:01 pm

Someone call MattPat, Wilson Betemit just homered for the O's to give them a 4-1 lead over Boston.

180 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 9:03 pm

Where's RI?
Why, this is just totally irresponsible!
Unacceptable.
.
.
.
So I will tell you that Wilson Betemit hit a 2 run jack in the bottom of the 8th to make Baltimore's lead over the Red Sox, 4-1.

Midget leads off the top of the 9th.
.
Grounder to 2nd, 1 Out.
Medium Papi up now.

181 OldYanksFan   ~  May 22, 2012 9:05 pm

[179] WTF?????
Now goddam Japan is calling New England games?

Meduim Papi back to the pitcher, 2 Out.

Gonzo flies out to LF.
Game Ovah.
The Basement belongs to Boston.

182 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 22, 2012 9:08 pm

[181] RI Yank is still on Scandanavian time so I got to take up the slack for Boston reporting. We're very international here at the Banter, you know.

Boston..still under .500!

183 RIYank   ~  May 22, 2012 9:27 pm

Nah, I was still watching, but stopped bantering. Thanks for filling in, Northern New England.

184 Mattpat11   ~  May 22, 2012 9:45 pm

The game ended and the Yankees were celebrating on the field.

I'm confused and frightened.
