The worst kind of Hughes day is a sunrise Hughes day

2 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 2:35 pm

I, for one, welcome our newest Yankees rookie, who has absolutely, positively NEVER played first for our hated rivals ... a certain Kevan Yewcalis and wish him any number of wonderful seasons as a True Yankee!

3 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 2:38 pm

played first player 1st ... though both are true ...

4 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2013 2:40 pm

I guess I'm coming around on Kevan Jewkalis ; )

And another late inning hit for Ramiro Pena...

Go Yanks!!!

5 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 2:55 pm

[2] A man with no barbaric ugly beard whatsoever.

6 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:09 pm

Uh, yeah. Straight down the pipe, Phil.

7 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:11 pm

Thanks for the out!

Although Cone says the first run of the game is always important. And Michael Kay says the bunt was stupid. So, huh. Maybe I'm wrong.

8 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:11 pm

Oh, not Cony at all! Don't know why I assumed.

9 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:12 pm

Right, so, somewhere between splitting the center of the plate belt high, and eight inches outside, that would work. Give it a shot, Phil!

10 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:14 pm

Good lord.

11 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:17 pm

Lucky to get out of that with just one.

12 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:19 pm

There are honest to goodness Yankee fans who enjoy watching Phil Hughes pitch and look forward to his starts. This really baffles me. Even when things are going "well" he's the most godawful boring, maddening pitcher this team has seen in years.

13 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:22 pm

I follow Jason Grilli on twitter. I have no idea why.

14 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:25 pm

[13] Does he dish tips on BBQ???

15 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:26 pm

[12] I for one, look forward to his at least once an outing, 30+ pitch inning.

16 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:27 pm

Crap

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:28 pm

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOghes!

18 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:30 pm

[15] Between all the foul balls and the multiple waste pitchers per batter (which I never, ever understood) its like having an ice pick slowly driven into your eye.

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:30 pm

[18] Well, at speed that it happens, it's more pushed than 'driven', don't you think?

20 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:32 pm

This should be Phil Hughes' new strategy. Have Ichiro and Cano throw his mistakes out at the plate to end the inning,

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:32 pm

Thank you Ichi and Robbie ... uh, we got a long man we can bring in now???

22 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:34 pm

[20] They were trying for one of those when Flaherty was batting, too. The ball traveled just a little too far.

23 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:35 pm

Yay!

24 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:35 pm

Oh my god, "Travis is a Pronks Bomber"

25 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:36 pm

[22] Its really a two out plan anyway.

26 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:37 pm

PRONK!

27 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:38 pm

[24] Is that Sterling?

28 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:40 pm

[27] Yep. That was a new kind of awful.

29 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:42 pm

Lyle comes through.

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:42 pm

Brains.

Frankie Brains!

31 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:42 pm

LYLE OVERBAY!!!!!

Still can't get over it.

32 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:42 pm

I had forgotten that Cervelli went to second on the error. Sort of a pleasant surprise when Sterling said he was gonna score.

33 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:43 pm

[31] I can't imagine anyone not liking him...

34 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:45 pm

Well, goddammit ... NOW I see Overbay's dunk???

My game feed must be 5 minutes behind!

35 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:45 pm

[33] I know Sterling is very fond of him. I forget why.

36 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:47 pm

Att boy, Phil. boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

37 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:49 pm

They aren't booing! They're shouting...
No, they're booing.

38 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:49 pm

Oh good, Phil giving it right back.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:50 pm

[36] Thanks a bunch ... love to know THAT was coming in super-slo-mo time ...

40 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:51 pm

[37] They're yelling "Hugh ... urns! Hugh ... urns!!!

41 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:51 pm

[39] It gives you a chance to avert your eyes.

I can't believe Adam Jones didn't fall for the trap! Although, nobody out...

44 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:54 pm

Phelps in the bullpen. I guess he'll shag the long flies the Orioles send there.

45 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 3:58 pm

The Orioles are playing Fibonacci Ball. They'll score three in the fourth.

46 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:01 pm

Anyway Rob came to play.

47 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:08 pm

Hughes is really doing a great job not giving up home runs when men are on base.

48 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:09 pm

Just what is a League Average RH’der worth as an FA?
I can’t see signing Phil unless he comes cheap.
He’s got talent, but no command.
You never know what you’re going to get….
except for a number of HRs.

Whaddayathink?
I think we have to let him go.

49 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:10 pm

Wow.... lots of empty seats.
I say we give Bonds a look-see.

50 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:13 pm

Thank you Joe.

51 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:19 pm

[48] I dunno. I guess it depends on who the alternatives are. Phelps, I guess.

52 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:21 pm

[51] Phelpsy making his case!

53 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:23 pm

Ichiro looks the way a lot of people expected him to look last year with the Yankees.

54 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:28 pm

BRAINS!

BRAINS!!!

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:30 pm

Gar.

Blargh.

56 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:31 pm

Swing at shit and watch tits-on-bacon go by.

Yeah, that's how you waste that inning and go in down, 5-2 ...

57 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:33 pm

I step out and everything goes to shit. I can't wait to see the Hughes Defense League spin this one after the game

58 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:35 pm

Joe's "Ph" strategy was good, but he just had to move to the last name version.

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:35 pm

Silly me, I always March was too early in the season for strawmen ...

60 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:36 pm

[48] I'm gonna be so happy if the Chamberlain and Hughes eras are over after this year.

61 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:37 pm

Phelpsy pitching like his Phucking pissed!

62 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:37 pm

I am a broken record to myself when it comes to Hughes. But when the ball leaves his hand he has no fucking clue where it is going to end up.

63 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:39 pm

[strike]Hughesy[/strike] Phelpsy for ever!!!

64 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:40 pm

Shit.

Hughesy Phelpsy for ever!!!

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:40 pm

HAH!

66 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:41 pm

It will be cool if Rob has a career year.

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:42 pm

Especially considering there's about a 10% chance the Yankees employ Hughes after this year, they really, REALLY need to just need to deploy their best pitchers at any given moment ... which, probably means starting Phelps over Hughes ...

We'll see if the organization has the humility to do it that way ... I certainly have my doubts ...

68 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:43 pm

Goyishe cop.

69 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:46 pm

[67] I have it a lot higher than ten percent

70 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:50 pm

[69] Yeah, but you're on target about as much as Dick Morris is, so I'm not especially worried ...

71 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:51 pm

Ugh. Nice pick off.

72 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:52 pm

Phucking Phelpsy!!!

73 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:52 pm

Philthy Phelpsy!!!

74 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:54 pm

Uh ... phlappy Phelpsy???

75 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:56 pm

MOTHER FUCKING PHELPSY!!!

76 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:57 pm

[70] The Yankees can be really fucking stubborn and slow to admit mistakes.

Plus there's going to be an almost wide open rotation and an alleged budget. I'd be mildly surprised if don't try to fill it with Hughes and various other flotsam and jetsam.

77 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 4:58 pm

Vernon!

78 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:02 pm

Tying runs on

79 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:04 pm

[76] Yawn.

Fact is, Hughsey is going to cost money next season, 1.5x money in fact ... and the Yankees aren't going to pay it, unless he pitches well enough in 2013 that it's an obvious choice (and that's almost certainly only if he pitches well enough as a STARTER).

If he's mediocre, why not try Phelps, or Warren, or whomever ... especially if they're cromulent in '13???

80 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:07 pm

I hate the wave. Yankee fans should not be doing it.

81 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:17 pm

So, two bright spots this game: Cano is ripping, Phelps dealing.

82 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:22 pm

[81] And Kuroda is pitching tomorrow. Just a blip.

83 Evil Empire   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:27 pm

Hey guys. I've been busy this season and haven't checked in much. I'm curious if anyone still wants to keep arod or if people who disagreed with me last season have changed their view.

84 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:35 pm

Get rid of A-Rod, how? Cut him? Oh, like a hit man or something?

85 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:41 pm

Jeez, you'd love to ph for Nix.
But, can't do it.

86 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:42 pm

Or can you???

87 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:44 pm

Joe is thinking, "Maybe we can score 60 runs here and I won't even need a SS."

88 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:45 pm

Oy.
Well, this should be interesting.

89 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:48 pm

Frankie at second? Alrighty then.

90 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:52 pm

Aw, I wanted to see Frankie field.

91 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 5:53 pm

Infield?
We don't need no steenkin infield.

92 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2013 6:00 pm

Yeah.
Well, win tomorrow!

93 Evil Empire   ~  Apr 13, 2013 6:39 pm

RIyank -- find a way to void his contract, try to get him to take a career ending settlement, trade him and eat the loot, or whatever. If releasing him and just paying him is an option then take it. I don't care.

94 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 13, 2013 7:03 pm

93) They can't void his contact, he'd never take a career ending settlement--why would he? Why would you want to release him and still pay him all the money? That doesn't make any sense.

The guy's reputation is spoiled, and he figures to take another hit this year, but if he can still play, even in a diminished state, that's a lot of money to eat for PR reasons.

95 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 13, 2013 7:24 pm

[94] Yeah... Melky was actually Suspended (as well as named in Biogenesis) and it just ruined his career. He's what?.... making $20,000/yr to play in Japan?

Whatever happens with ARod, he's ours.
We need RH bats.
Let's hope he can still be of use to us.

96 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 13, 2013 9:00 pm

[93],[94],[95] But then there was this... Man, I don't want to be this guy in any life.

97 Evil Empire   ~  Apr 13, 2013 11:27 pm

[94] Sometimes creative solutions to problems can be found and I see no reason the team shouldn't explore every possible way out, even if everyone wants to dismiss it as being crazy. Would a guy supposedly as pround as Arod take a permanent bench on the fanny role if that was the solution? I'd tell him to get comfortable.

Anyway, as Spock said, "there are always possibilities."

98 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 14, 2013 10:47 am

It's so great that we have, like, the rest of our lives to debate ARod. I think everybody should set aside a few minutes everyday to do it.
