Stay Low and Keep Firing

tumblr_mk6voo84lh1rytfqio1_500

Okay, are the Yankees’ cooked, have you given up hope, or do you believe that they can still make a run? If you think they’ve still got a chance then tonight’s performance is a big one for the Big Fella. Biggest game of the year, in fact.

Brett Gardner CF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alfonso Soriano LF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Curtis Granderson DH
Eduardo Nunez SS
Lyle Overbay 1B
Chris Stewart C

I've given up hope.

About the only thing I'm waiting on is Derek's return, if at all this year.

Surprisingly, I'm not frustrated or bitter or anything.

Just feel bad for Mo going out without one last October.

2 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 18, 2013 5:41 pm

They have enough games remaining in AL East to still have a fighter's chance.
Winning series is crucial.
Yeah, this is probably the biggest game of the year.
However, I do plan to keep an eye on the NY Giants game, just because I haven't seen them since last year.

1) I also do not feel frustrated or bitter. This season has been odd, but very interesting, and sometimes fun - aside from the ARod mess which is just a pathetic sideshow.

3 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 18, 2013 5:53 pm

[2] I just wish all the parties involved in that mess would just STFU and handle their business; Yankees, A-Rod & Co., MLB, everyone. But I understand it's an integral part of ensuring due process in today's world; it's the reason why we fight wars in far away lands.

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 6:02 pm

The boys ABSOLUTELY have a chance.

Not a great one, but it exists.

Going to root this one to the bitter end!

5 Start Spreading the News   ~  Aug 18, 2013 6:04 pm

Alfonso Soriano in 20 games has already accumulated enough offensive WAR to pass everyone on the team but Gardner and Cano.

Interestingly, Gardner already has 103 Ks for the season. He is on pace for 136. Ouch. Double Ouch when you consider the #2 hitter has an OBP of 306.

The Yankee offense will revert to its regular anemic form. Adding Granderson just upgrades it from terrible to weak. Same with Arod (assuming he isn't leaving soon).

So I have given up hope for the season. I would have loved for Mo to be on the mound saving Game 7 in the WS. But I don't see a Dodgeresque run in the Yanks future.

6 Start Spreading the News   ~  Aug 18, 2013 6:04 pm

[5] #2 hitter refers to Suzuki.

7 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 6:58 pm

I was a toddler during the original Bronx Zoo™. Any wise elders in the Banter care to comment on how it compares to this current circus? Cashman's comments today were crazy..people look back fondly now on Reggie/Martin/George and their nonsense but somehow I don't think anyone will look back at this with nostalgia..

8 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:04 pm

Link?

9 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:07 pm

Nevermind, read about it over at LoHud.

Sheesh.

STFU, Alex, and I say that as someone who wishes that Bud Selig would hurry up and die in a grease fire already ...

10 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:09 pm

[7] In its own way, much crazier. More alpha males in the spotlight. And it was before I realized Mike Lupica is a sanctimonious asshole.

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:10 pm

Curt Schilling?

Oh, joy.

12 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:11 pm

[9] Agreed.
[10] Funny. But yeah, that George-Billy-Reggie triangle is hard to beat., ego overload. Cashman and A-Rod both seem like whiny brats, and where is Hank to bring some bluster?

13 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:11 pm

[7] I think the most fascinating part of the whole saga is that there's not one person in it even a little bit likable.

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:12 pm

[11] Can you get the Spanish feed? I may turn the J feed on here. If Schilling and Kruk are on it's completely a NoGoZone.

15 Chris   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:22 pm

Well, I was wrong about Suzuki. I really believed he was dogging it in Seattle to get traded. He obviously hated playing for a team that never made any effort to win. I thought he would still be his old self here. He isn't. He won't be next year. I hope he's ok being a fourth outfielder / pinch-runner type, because that's what he should be on a winning Yankees team next year.

16 Simone   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:26 pm

Alex is a cheating lying sociopath. The Yankees organization is comprised of a greedy deceitful bunch of people. The Yankees knew what he was and re-signed him anyway. I hope Alex continues to make their lives hellish and vice versa. Never have a group of people so richly deserve each other.

17 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:29 pm

I honestly don't know what to make of it all. I think A-Rod really believes this stuff. He really sees himself as the victim.

Either he's nuts, or Levine is.

18 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:29 pm

[16]Basically.

There's no Thurman Munson here

19 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:33 pm

Ok, I'm going to take JazzJr to the pool. This is unwatchable and unlistenable. Have a nice Sunday everyone!

20 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:33 pm

We have no chance because CC is cooked.
If he was still an Ace, we might have an outside chance.
And there is Run #2, and CC has 1,836 pitches already.

21 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:33 pm

Craptastic.

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:38 pm

C'mon Alex!

23 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:38 pm

Fuck off, Beantown.

24 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:39 pm

Good grief.

Low rent punks.

26 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:40 pm

Unreal Dumpster doesn't get tossed.

27 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:42 pm

Christ. Umpires suck.

28 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:42 pm

And just like that -- I have sympathy for Arod and hate Boston again.

29 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:43 pm

What a fucking pansy, Dempster. And how in the fuck doesn't he get kicked out?

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:44 pm

STOMP THESE FUCKS.

31 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:44 pm

Warm up the long man and let's hit my little pony in the head. Fuck conigliaro.

32 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:45 pm

[28] Yup. Now if he just manages to keep his mouth shut postgame.

33 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:45 pm

Good call Alex. Dempster should be gone.

34 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:45 pm

And plunk Big Pedi.

35 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:46 pm

Meanwhile, have I mentioned how much I LOATHE Chris Stewart?!@?!?!?!

36 Simone   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:46 pm

[17] All sociopaths lie compulsively, viewing themselves as victims when confront with their deceit. They have no remorse for their behavior or empathy for their actual victims. Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun, and Lance Armstrong are textbook examples of sociopaths.

37 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:49 pm

[35] Why do you loathe Chris Stewart?

38 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:50 pm

Way to keep the lead asshole.

39 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:51 pm

Arod may be a sociopath but right now he's our fucking sociopath.

And Ortiz juiced too, By the way.

40 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:54 pm

So wait, I missed Dempster hitting A-Rod?

I can only assume he hits Big Fatty with objects in the clubhouse?

41 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:54 pm

[39] And Manny. 2004 & 2007 are tainted.

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:55 pm

[37] Why *DON'T* you loathe Chris Stewart???

43 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:55 pm

It's only the second. Wait until later in the game.

44 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:57 pm

[42] The cheapness of the organization forced him into a role he had no business being in. I feel bad for him.

45 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 18, 2013 7:58 pm

[36] I've never been a fan, but that's a little harsh. To me, he just grew up without someone having a firm hand steering his morality; getting yes'ed to death as a young player, and now protecting over $100M. A lot of "professionals" want a piece of that treasure and are leading him to bad decisions.

46 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:00 pm

I missed all the fun.

47 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:07 pm

After now seeing the replay. Wow. That stupid fucking asshole home plate umpire can go piss up a rope. Toss Dempster ya' Douche!

48 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:08 pm

C'mon, Alex, make them suffer.

49 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:10 pm

[42] He seems like a perfectly nice guy. I used to watch him play in Scranton. He has groupies. Kind of a good-looking guy, I guess.

I'm amused that he keeps trying to get away from the Yankees, and they keep trading for him and getting him back. :-)

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:11 pm

Well hit, good enough.

51 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:12 pm

I'll take a go ahead rbi.

52 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:12 pm

[49] He has groupies?

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit, I'm way off base ...

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:17 pm

Ugh.

I feel like Fat Bastard is going to piss this fucking game away.

Fucking, fuck, fuck, fuck.

FUCK!!!

54 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:21 pm

[7] Late to your comment but:

I don't see Alex, Brian, Hal and Bud teaming up for any Miller Lite commercials a few years down the road.

And damn straight there's no Thurman Munson here. This crew doesn't deserve to speak his name. And there's no Guidry, no Roy White, no Willie Randolph... man, I don't usually play the "Lookit how old I am" card, but since your question was based on your having been too young... I'll say it was a helluva team to live and die with every day as an 11-year-old boy. With Scooter in the booth, natch.

55 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:21 pm

[52] Well, there were some teen or college-aged girls screaming things like, "I love you Chris!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Also, when I posted a photo of him to my Tumblr, it got 50-something likes/reblogs. A-Rod rated maybe 15.

Do you loathe him just because he's not very good?

56 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:27 pm

Those Bronx Zoo teams worked well together. That environment was much crazier. This is just Alex. Which is plenty crazy, maybe singularly crazier than anything back then, but the rest of this team is bland.

Not to say those 70s guys were admirable as people. Munson, Nettles, Jackson, Lyle--these guys were douchebags--and I liked them.

57 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:30 pm

[54] There is Derek, and Mo.

58 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:30 pm

54) And CC and Granderson. Wells, Overbay. These are boy scouts.

59 knuckles   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:30 pm

Can we please see the damn game?!? WTF is this 3 hours of sanctimony?

60 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:31 pm

Loved the 70s Yankees! Billy and George. Billy and Reggie. Reggie and Thurman. But they could play some damn baseball.

61 knuckles   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:31 pm

Meanwhile Nunez is making Salty his bitch.

62 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:32 pm

Just back in. Really, how the hell was Girardi tossed there and not Dempster?? Sox as usual get a free ride from MLB. Unreal.

63 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:36 pm

A young George would have loved this. As long as if it puts fannies in the seats, it's good.

64 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:39 pm

Fuck Shillking. He asks, "why would any free agent want to play for the Yankees"? Funny thing, most do.

65 rbj   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:42 pm

CC seems to be missing his first base and home plate assignments lately.

66 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 18, 2013 8:46 pm

Gosh, CC, another huge fail tonight.

67 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:00 pm

Scored a single, not an error.

79 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:19 pm

Buzz off Schilling..a career pattern of use. You mean like the guys who won you rings in 2004 & 2007, Big Papi and Manny??

80 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:19 pm

Rbj - its in Birmingham, Alabama.

81 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:21 pm

No PH for Stewart??

82 thelarmis   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:23 pm

what did a-rod mouth rounding the bases? at first, i just saw a loud "YEAH!", but just now there was more and i didn't catch it all... something like: "fuck yeah, mother..."

83 knuckles   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:24 pm

Good riddance Dempster. I guess acting as the commish and pitching a decent ballgame were too much for you tonight. Maybe shoulda tried to stick to the latter.

84 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:26 pm

Gardy!!!

85 thelarmis   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:26 pm

Ouch..why was he running there? Out by miles and miles.

91 thelarmis   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:32 pm

he should've swung at that...

92 randym77   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:33 pm

[90] I think that was called from the dugout.

And what's wrong with Nunez? If he's out for awhile, who's the SS? Nix? Call up the Attorney General or Brendan Harris?

93 knuckles   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:35 pm

Nunez slid too hard back into first after pounding a long single off the Monster (for the second straight AB). Jammed his ankle a bit but it didn't look too bad.

94 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:37 pm

Nunez really seems to get a hurt a lot..always wondered about guys like that. Is it random or are they just kind of brittle?

95 thelarmis   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:39 pm

jesus, cc - throw a fucking strike!

kinda surprised he's still in...

damn. he's sucking this year.

96 The Hawk   ~  Aug 18, 2013 9:39 pm

I still think anyone who roots for A Rod as sort of David vs Goliath hero is seriously deluded, but I'm pretty sure I'm now rooting for him in some kinda postmodern antihero way.
