Stay Positive, Dammit

tumblr_m992c4Be8m1r6ja9oo1_500

I’m slippin’, I admit it. The Yanks have handled the Jays this year. So why does something tell me that stops this week, especially with Phil Hughes pitching tonight?

Stupid Heebie Jeebies.

Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Alfonso Soriano LF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Curtis Granderson DH
Lyle Overbay 1B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Austin Romine C

Jeter’s back.

Hey, who's that Derek Jeter kid at shortstop?

2 Chris   ~  Aug 26, 2013 4:35 pm

I'm not sure I care for those sleeveless red jerseys that the RailRiders wear.

3 Capital Yank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 4:40 pm

So does he hit another obligatory welcome back homer in his first AB?

4 MSM35   ~  Aug 26, 2013 5:39 pm

Nice work Banterers getting the Yanks back in contention while I was on vacation. Of course the prayer I sent up to the gods at the Parthenon my have had something to do with it. Looking forward to a fun Sept. and a one game shot to get in the tournament.

Mere hours before I leave for my Chicago vacation, lets all join for our grand tradition, Phil Hughes night.

Just beat the pompous ass Dickey. That's all I ask.

6 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:11 pm

Ah, here's that new kid.

7 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:12 pm

[4] You were at the Parthenon?
I'm thinking the Virgin Goddess has a soft spot for A-Rod. (Although I believe centaurs are Apollo's creatures.)

8 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:14 pm

Looks kind of old for a kid, I doubt Derek will get, oh, say 3000 hits.

9 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:15 pm

Productive outs.

10 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:17 pm

[8] I'm pretty sure he won't get 3000 more, anyway.

11 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:20 pm

C'mon, Phil. Channel someone good tonight.

12 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:24 pm

I prefer not to see anyone on base when Encarnacion comes up against Hughes...
It's like listening to a time bomb tick.

13 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:25 pm

[8] Some say he has an affinity for noodles...

14 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:27 pm

Whew.

15 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:33 pm

Nice walk.
Curtis and A-Rod absorbed a total of three pitches, so Lyle did good there.

16 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:34 pm

Not as good. Eephus K.

17 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:39 pm

I have to be honest: anybody bats against Hughes with men on, and I feel like it's a ticking time bomb.

18 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:41 pm

2 men on. No out. Not good. Not good at all.

19 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:41 pm

The ticking is getting louder.

20 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:44 pm

That was good. My breathing is more regular now.

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:45 pm

Lame.

22 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:45 pm

Oh, you have to be kidding me.

23 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:46 pm

Blergh

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:46 pm

Pillar sounds like Millar. Therefore, I hate him anyway.

25 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:51 pm

Doesn't it seem like they could just sit on his fastball? Because tonight at least a pretty small percentage of the knucklers are in the strike zone.

26 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:58 pm

Tick
tick
tick...

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 6:59 pm

Shite! That was actually close at home.

28 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:00 pm

Sigh.

29 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:02 pm

The fact that these aren't home run runs isn't comforting.

30 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:16 pm

I feel I am staying as positive as anyone could reasonably expect.

Hey, look, Phil has lowered his ERA this game!

(So far.
I said, "reasonably expect".)

31 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:17 pm

A-bomb!

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:17 pm

Atta boy, Alex.

33 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:18 pm

That makes me feel more positive!

34 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:19 pm

[33] Ionic?

35 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:24 pm

Congratulations to Gritner. Already a yeoman's career with 500 hits.

36 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:26 pm

Sit on the fastball, Rob!

37 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:26 pm

[34] Yes, and waiting for the solution...

38 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:27 pm

Square one up, Robbie!

39 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:28 pm

Dagnabbit!

40 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:33 pm

[34], [37] You two seem to have some chemistry going tonight.

41 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:34 pm

Men on base. Scary time.

42 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:34 pm

tick tick TICK TICK TICK...

43 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:35 pm

Ohphorphuck's sake!

44 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:35 pm

Shee-it!

45 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:35 pm

[40] Hey, that reminds me!
I have determined that baseball is mathematically impossible.
Demonstration to follow...

46 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:36 pm

Dagnabbit, I've never seen Ichiro flub a catchable ball before.

47 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:39 pm

This could be the point of no return ugly very soon.

48 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:40 pm

Good shut down inning after Alex tied it up. Oi!

49 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:41 pm

[45] Baseball or Hughes not sucking?

50 monkeypants   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:41 pm

I don't get pulling Hughes here. I guess Girardi is itching to use that lefty-lefty matchup.

51 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:41 pm

IBBs.

Fuck em.

52 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:42 pm

From the official MLB rules:

1.05
Home base shall be marked by a five-sided slab of whitened rubber. It shall be a 17-inch square with two of the corners removed so that one edge is 17 inches long, two adjacent sides are 8 ½ inches and the remaining two sides are 12 inches and set at an angle to make a point. It shall be set in the ground with the point at the intersection of the lines extending from home base to first base and to third base; with the 17-inch edge facing the pitcher’s plate, and the two 12-inch edges coinciding with the first and third base lines. The top edges of home base shall be beveled and the base shall be fixed in the ground level with the ground surface.

53 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:44 pm

With Hughes, it's fearful anticipation then anger. With CC lately, it's just sad.

54 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:45 pm

But, [52] this means that the pointy part of the plate forms an isosceles right triangle, two sides 12 and the hypotenuse 17... and there is no such triangle.

QED, baseball is impossible.

At least in Euclidean space. Hm.

55 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:47 pm

Thanks, Sierra.

56 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:50 pm

[54] Bless it's little pointed head. I thought the part about being level with the ground surface was impossible. The plate rises from the dirt the thickness of it.

57 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:52 pm

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. $@#$#$@#$@#$ Just a fly ball or a ground ball. FUCK!

58 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:52 pm

He struck out on an 81 mph fastball?

59 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:55 pm

No joke, the Yankees must come back and win this game.

60 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 26, 2013 7:59 pm

[35] Lovely use of 'yeoman' there. A word that should be used more often.

Poor Matt Harvey. Can it get any worse for the Mets?

61 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:08 pm

Sending RA back to the dorms? It's not curfew.

62 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:10 pm

Holy hell, Vernon. Why bother?

63 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:10 pm

PH for Brett in this sit-chee-ay-shun? Hope nothing's wrong.

64 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:13 pm

That was some rookie ABs from veterans. Louped.

65 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:13 pm

[54] Huh. And here I thought home plate always reminded me of one side of a dreidel. Live and learn...

66 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:16 pm

[65] Which side?

67 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:30 pm

Sigh again.

68 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:30 pm

Harumph.

69 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:31 pm

[66] none >;)

70 rbj   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:34 pm

Night all.

71 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:44 pm

Nice to get the injured veterans back; this team seems tired and old.

72 RIYank   ~  Aug 26, 2013 8:45 pm

[69] (sp)

73 monkeypants   ~  Aug 26, 2013 9:04 pm

[71] This team seems like the same team it's been all year, save a few weeks in April and early May, and the recent hot streak.

74 BobbyB   ~  Aug 26, 2013 9:08 pm

I repeat what I've said all year. Phil Hughes sucks.
