The Great Mariano By the Numbers

Specially tailored for Bronx Banter, dig this awesomeness from our man Craig Robinson:

Sal Fasano!

Wow, that's cool, thank you Craig!

A couple of odd facts show up here, I thought. One is how clueless we are about how to find WAR for a relief pitcher -- BR and BP are miles apart on it. The other was Mariano's BABIP-against from season to season: it fluctuates like crazy. Even the most consistent pitcher in the history of baseball doesn't have a consistent BABIP-against. Can't predict baseball.

The Mike Stanley / JR Murphy thing at the end is as mind-blowing as any of the numbers.

I just love looking at his numbers as Craig's laid them out here.

Interesting that FIP and xFIP misses something about Mo since they are always higher than his ERA.

[5] Yeah, Craig did a great job here!
