Huh.
Why didn't he just exercise his option? The Yankees insisted on giving him more money?

Oh, interesting.
Seems like a flaw in how the salary ceiling works, that they can pay him more and get charged less!

[2] If only my salary worked out that way, too.

I can't help but feel as though they're constantly neglecting something critical, even when I want to compliment a clever accounting move. Probably because I feel the savings will be wasted on a stopgap veteran or someone whose play will turn out to be far less than anticipated.

My question is can he still play?

[7] Whether he can play 12 megaclams worth of ball, we'll have to see. But the one thing I'm willing to credit him for without question is attitude. Remember Mo in spring 2012 - "I'm not going out this way"? That was from someone whose rep by comparison was to be laid back. Whatever the Yanks get from Jeter in '13, I trust him to empty the tank for real.

Meanwhile, the caption from the Si link at the top of the page hit me between the eyes:

"Derek Jeter is entering his 20th season with the Yankees"

Nothing I didn't know, but that big round number lands on the table with a wet slap. It says: I am getting very, very old. What da fuck?

To me, the only reason Derek Jeter is going to be a Yankee in 2014 is that the team is headed toward an 82 win season. They'll be out of the playoffs by August 1 but they can parade Derek around the league after he announces during spring training that this is his last season. They were lucky to win 85 games this past season and are clearly in need of a total rebuild. Let's review, first base Texiera. Been on the decline and missed all of 2012. Second base-unknown- could spend a fortune on Cano, but why if you're not going to the post season for the next few years. SS- 40 year old coming off major ankle surgery, limited range and slowing down. Third base-unknown-probably 50 game suspension for A-Rod. Outfield-Gardner, Granderson and Ichiro? Pretty lame. Pitching-pretty lame if CC is declining so fast and if Kuroda doesn't return the starting pitching is beyond weak. Do we even have a catcher? They're going to have to look outside the organization for one unless they want to have the least productive group of catchers in the league again. So it's for show, just like the Mariano show of 2013.
