as long as he stays healthy...
that's the thing with every major signing, right? Especially the first few years of the deal.
The good news is, the Yankees didn't give away their top catching prospects to get McCann. The Yankees have backups. This is a great signing.

I think he adds some real punch to the lineup, and hjis stats in Yankee Stadium oughta be pretty terrific. Now, if Tex can come back and play, Sori continues to hit for another year, add in Grady,(and Robbie if the $$$ become a bit more reasonable) it's a pretty significant lineup. (Not counting for anything out of A*rod).

McCann is supposedly a great clubhouse guy and a "gamer." I liked Martin and felt they should have retained him, and this would have been unecessary, but I think they found out how much they need a guy behind the plate with at least some offensive output.

He could also take over at 1st, when Tex is off the books. Maybe the Angels want Tex back. Hell, we will throw Wells in too, to sweeten the deal. The Angels are paying most of Wells salary, they should get to field him too.

The Beltran deal better not go to 3 years! Ugh! What are the chances that he is healthy for the next 3 years?

3) Zero chances. But also 100% chance it will be a 3-year deal.

[4] What about a reasonable (from the team point of view) vesting option on that third year like at the end of McCann's deal?

5) That works for me. But Beltran will want 3 years with a vesting option for a 4th!

Did hear a couple3 of ATL ppitchers singing his praises today; sounds like he had excellent raport with the staff.

The "take over at 1B/DH on few years" idea is pretty flawed. We are talking about a (now) 29 y.o. catcher with a a career 117 OPS+, which is not exactly exciting production for 1B/DH (and what about his defense at first?). In four seasons, when Teix is finally off the books, McCann will be 33 y.o. and likely not able to hit any where close to valuable at DH. Meanwhile, A-Rod will still be under contract until 2017, and assuming *he's* not kicked out of baseball for life, presumably he'll take up ABs at the 1B/DH position. Lastly, the Yankees organization seems committed to using the DH as a rotating hospital ward/retirement spa for aging players. How is McCann going to get adequate ABs, assuming he can even play 1B, and assuming he can even hit the positions?

Like with Posada, this deal is only good so long as he can catch (and hit). In other words, I think they get a few good years and eat the sucky last couple.
