Happy Baseball everyone!

5 thelarmis   ~  Apr 1, 2014 3:25 pm

a buddy of mine bought me the mlb package for this season, so i'll be able to watch some yanks games - via yes feed - on my laptop or iphone. of course, i won't be around very much and it looks like i'm gonna miss some, most, or all of tonight's game. dammit!

6 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 3:43 pm

[5] Priorities!

7 mhoward120   ~  Apr 1, 2014 4:16 pm

Yankees-Dodgers WS. You heard it here first.

8 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 4:16 pm

Ah, my favorite day of the year

9 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 5:48 pm

Woman setting up the mic is kinda hot in a Cobie Smulders kinda way.

10 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 5:54 pm

Evening all!

11 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:03 pm

Hm.
When am I going to get used to Jacoby Ellsbury leading off?

12 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:03 pm

Anyone else find that to be a kinda lame opening day ceremony?

13 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:13 pm

Okay, seeing the team line up got me excited. This is gonna be a fun season cause I just compare it to last year--gotta figure it'll be better, and despite losing I didn't find last season unenjoyable or without its share of good memories.

Anyhow, let's go Yanks! Glad to have the jernt open for you guys and the Yanks for another season.

14 novayankeefan   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:13 pm

Awesome start, 2 minutes of baseball related content, 10 minutes of commercials.

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:15 pm

Yeah, that would be a rotten beginning to the end ...

16 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:15 pm

[13] I actually disliked the 2012 season alot more than 2012.

17 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:15 pm

Oh Jesus fuggin Christ. Hope he's OK. Jeez, his arm could be broke and he'd still go down to first.

18 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:15 pm

[16] That should be "than 2013"

19 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:16 pm

[16] With me it's vice versa.

20 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:16 pm

Ohhhh. [16] [18] [19] Never mind.

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:19 pm

Go Yankees! C'mon, Big Fella!

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:22 pm

Well, that's not auspicious.

23 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:22 pm

[20] I think I've posted here long enough that everyone knows one of my biggest pet peeves in baseball is pointless bullpen machinations. The 2012 bullpen with two LOOGYs and two ROOGYs was pretty close to my low point of Yankee fandom. I HATED that.

24 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:23 pm

I still don't understand the point of that hill

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:24 pm

[23] Were there more plays in 2012? I know you love plays.

26 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:25 pm

[24] It makes the field more like a pinball machine, I think.

27 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:26 pm

We played the infield in in the first inning against Scott Feldman and the Astros?

28 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:26 pm

[27] First play of the season!

29 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:28 pm

Bleh.

30 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:29 pm

Yankees really lighting it up in the field

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:30 pm

In fact, so far, NOTHING this inning has been auspicious.

Meh.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:30 pm

::facepalm::

33 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:31 pm

Nice throw, Teix!

34 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:31 pm

I don't think the Yankees have cleanly fielded one play yet.

35 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:31 pm

::facepalm::
::facepalm::

Sigh.

How much longer does CC's deal run?

36 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:32 pm

Hm.

We needed more spring training.

37 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:33 pm

Can't anybody here play this game?

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:34 pm

[37] Seems the Astros' have the hang of it ...

39 mhoward120   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:34 pm

Could CC possibly have deteriorated since last season (gulp!)?

40 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:35 pm

The Astros really are just a boulevard of broken dreams for busted prospects, huh?

41 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:37 pm

[38] Meh. They hit a couple grounders that the Yankees made asinine decisions on.

42 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:38 pm

[39] I know looks is deceivin', but he looks right now like I could hit him.

43 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:39 pm

Hey, Team! Checking in den the bar, happy Opening Day! That bottom of the first was fun, huh?

44 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:39 pm

The Astros have four runs on three hits, no BB, no HBP, no ROE. That must be fairly unusual. (Especially in the first inning.)

45 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:40 pm

[43] No!
But, Happy Opening Day to you too!

46 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:41 pm

Wow, Sori looks exactly the same as he did in the old days, only all bulked up.

47 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:42 pm

(And why was the infield drawn in in the first inning?)

48 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:46 pm

[47] Because, plays.

49 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:48 pm

We don't love the Hoes...

50 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:48 pm

WTF!?!?!

51 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:48 pm

This isn't going well.

52 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:50 pm

I never liked this stupid game anyway. What time do the Cosmos play?

NJ Generals?

Silver Bullets?

53 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:50 pm

CC always starts out slow, blah, blah, blah, wait till June, blah, blah, blah.

54 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:50 pm

In my tardiness, what happened? I heard Jeter hit in the hand, is he ok? Four runs...ugh now five. CC will be out of his mind after this start. Is that shiney new season feeling gone.

55 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:52 pm

Anyone have a diagnosis? Velocity?

56 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:53 pm

Seriously? Gritner isn't lighting it up out there either, is he?

57 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:54 pm

[54] CC's not pitching well, but the Yankees' fielding has been awful and Joe had the infield in in the first inning for no good reason. They're pitching poorly, fielding poorly, hitting poorly and managing poorly.

On the other hand, its opening day. It can be overlooked

58 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:55 pm

We can appreciate a Grossman and a Feldman in the same lineup.

59 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:56 pm

Towarda Leaning Jeter!

60 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:57 pm

Beltran looks *awful* in the field.

61 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:57 pm

[58] Yes! Very true. Emet.

62 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:58 pm

Sound effect for Beltran trying to pick up that ball:

Unh
Meh
Oof
Dammit
C'mere
Ugh

63 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:58 pm

Don't worry, CC. You did have those 17 scoreless innings to end Spring Training. sigh....

64 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:58 pm

Christ on a cracker, somebody needs to show CC the secret of the "window to weight gain" ... thin CC sucks eggs.

65 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:59 pm

I can't really get too upset about opening day. Just get a hit.

66 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 6:59 pm

I think CC can go six.

(And give up 18 runs and throw 150 pitches, I guess.)

67 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:00 pm

Can someone tell me the specs on instantreplay? (You know, to pass the time?)

68 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:03 pm

Nice to see George and Barbara out and about, but the President really doesn't look good. I suppose he is 90 and there's only so good you're gonna look...

69 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:03 pm

Man, Papa Bush is ancient!

70 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:04 pm

Opening Day, フレーー!
What's happening Banter?

Oh, 6-0 'Stros..Is CC really done done??
Brian Roberts then Kelly Johnson. Feel the excitement!

71 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:06 pm

[67] Don't know what that means. You want to know how to find the video highlights online?

72 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:06 pm

Oh Jesus Christ its Scott Feldman. Someone get a hit

73 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:07 pm

Houston area Gallery Furniture King is guesting on the Astros radio feed. His 'real' Texan accent is fascinating. If 'Stros win more than 63 games, free furniture for regular customers!

74 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:09 pm

I mean, what are the rules for appealing umpires' calls?

75 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:13 pm

Much better

76 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:14 pm

That was a nice pitch.

77 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:15 pm

3 up 3 down for CC. Funny

78 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:15 pm

And Matt, I must say, this Zen thing you have going on is most amusing. How long can you keep this up?

79 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:16 pm

[74]] Ah!
The manager just tells the crew chief. Is that what you're asking?
Teams have a clubhouse guy watching video who can tell the manager whether it's a good idea to challenge.

80 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:16 pm

(78) Phil Jackson's influence already being felt in the NY sports scene?

81 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:18 pm

THAT was a strike?

82 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:19 pm

can someone air lift CC a goddamn cheeseburger, please?

83 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:19 pm

But how many challenges do you get? And is there a penalty for being wrong?

84 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:20 pm

Yay, a hit!

85 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:21 pm

[83] There is no penalty for being wrong except that you don't get another. If right, you get another.

86 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:23 pm

(68) Jimmy Carter is traveling the world in support of women's basic rights to live, George and Barbara go to baseball games.

87 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:24 pm

Mo's gone. :(

88 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:24 pm

[86] Everyone does what they're good at. That's the way it should be. From each according to his ability, as Bush used to say. (I think. Or Karl Marx, I always get those two mixed up.)

89 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:24 pm

[78] Unless there's something just unforgivable (the first inning intentional walk from a few years ago, for example)I let a lot go on opening day

90 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:25 pm

Ah, ok, thanks. That sounds reasonable.

91 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:27 pm

Wait, I forgot, no: you get one challenge in the first six innings, then two in the seventh through ninth. Yeah, they came up with that one just recently.

92 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:28 pm

I wish I had a brat and some fries. Damn.
I'll get a beer, that will have to do.

93 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:28 pm

Did I show you guys my purty new Yankee Subway sign?

https://twitter.com/Mattpat11/status/451099939729571840/photo/1

94 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:29 pm

[93] Very cool. You mounted it on a brick wall? :-)

95 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:31 pm

[94] Brick wall is part of the picture. :)

96 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:32 pm

The Pirates challenged a pick-off in extra innings yesterday, and won. I mean, they won the challenge, then they won the game 1-0.

97 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:33 pm

Hey, if you look at the GameDay page for the game, it now has a little marker saying how many challenges the team has. On the little scoreboard.

98 rbj   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:34 pm

Evening folks, what the hell is going on?

99 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:37 pm

Nuney DFA'd? That might be a bigger error than any he's made.

100 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:37 pm

I thought all outs counted the same, regardless of inning.

(Same rule applies for runs, so far as I know.)

102 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:46 pm

[99] He can't play any position in the field and isn't a good enough hitter to make up for it

103 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:48 pm

[93] Mattpat11, that's an awesome sign but I challenge it with my new Donnie Baseball jersey! https://twitter.com/MrOKJazzTOKYO/status/451157471004880896/photo/1

104 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:49 pm

[102] But besides that, pretty good! Except that he tends to throw the ball away a lot. Still.

105 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:52 pm

[103] I picked up one of those when I went to see the Dodgers at the Stadium last year. :)

106 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 7:56 pm

[105] I had to explain to a Dodger fan friend here how much Mattingly is revered by guys our (my?) age. They just see him as a rather tactically-challenged manager.. :(

107 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:00 pm

[106] I'm 27. I'd say I'm at the very tail end of the window which probably extends to guys about 35.

108 rbj   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:01 pm

how did this game get away?

109 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:01 pm

Mattingly was our DiMaggio.

110 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:02 pm

[107] Extend that to about 45 I think. (Me just turned 40..sigh...)

I'm enjoying this game though, always great to see world clas pitchers like Scott Feldman at the top of their game. Just got to tip yer hat to the Greatness.

111 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:02 pm

[107] Its kinda funny. In hindsight, the Mattingly I saw play (1993-1995) was a shell of the awesome player he was, but he was still my hero growing up an was the nicest guy on earth when I met him in 1995 and that will always mean alot to me.

112 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:02 pm

Andy!!!

113 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:05 pm

Way to rebound, CC.

114 Jon DeRosa   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:09 pm

I am on a flight to Houston, if I get there in time I'll call the score truck for a late delivery.

115 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:11 pm

Remember when Sori fouled out bunting strike three in the World Series?

116 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:14 pm

Ouch.
That's our best way of getting on base so far, though.

117 rbj   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:14 pm

ouch!

118 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:17 pm

#14 looks like Aaron Boone, but from the left side.

119 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:19 pm

So I'm heading out to the desert in August (I know). Gonna see the Rockies and DBacks.

120 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:22 pm

Oh, jeez. What an opportunity for Kelly Johnson. Got an eminently hittable pitch, too.

121 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:22 pm

[119] Rockies-D'backs? The Bible Thumpers vs The Gritty Grinders. Enjoy that one!

122 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:23 pm

[120] At least he's clean and playing the right way. That means a lot to me. (Note: means nothing to me.)

123 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:24 pm

[119] Been there in August. It's hell.

But if you sit still and drink lots and lots of water, it's not really uncomfortable.

124 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:26 pm

[121] Yeah. I miss Bob Brenley bobblehead night by one game too.

Should be a lot of fun though.

125 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:27 pm

Did they cut to commercial mid at bat?

126 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:30 pm

I went to the Oakland Coliseum and AT&T Park in 2012 and Wrigley and The Cell last year, so I'm looking forward to seeing Chase Field this year.

The only one I didn't like was Wrigley, btw.

127 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:32 pm

So at least one pinstriped dude is having a good day.

And that's the inside out Derek Jeter special.

137 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:42 pm

Gameday is funny on opening day.

"Chad Qualls is trying to tie up Derek Jeter with fastballs inside; Jeter is hitting .000 on pitches in that location compared to .000 overall."

138 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:43 pm

Yo ho!

141 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:43 pm

With Mo gone Jeter (and I guess to some degree Sabathia) is the only guy left that it actually makes me sad to see fail. Everyone else makes me mad. If absolutely nothing else I'm living and dying with Jeter this year

142 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:44 pm

HA!

143 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:45 pm

Right?

I'll take it!

145 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:46 pm

Oh, So ...

146 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:47 pm

Nope, no floodgates.

147 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:48 pm

[145] Look at the bright side, they've now scored DOUBLE the amount of runs this season of America's Working Class Hero Champion Red Sox..so they got THAT going for them.

148 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:48 pm

Man, a hit from Sori would have made it a game, too.

149 rbj   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:53 pm

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict we won't see Mo tonight.

150 RIYank   ~  Apr 1, 2014 8:55 pm

[123] Chase Field will probably have the roof closed and the air-conditioning on.

I went to a couple of WBC games last spring at Chase Field, and everyone was all excited because the roof was open. You just don't see that during the regular baseball season.
