The Chumps are Champs

The Werld Champeen Red Sox ride into the Bronx atop a 4-5 record. Same as our heroes. Lots of season left for these two squads to define themselves and this early meeting might just be step one in that process. Clay Buchholz will face Michael Pineda in the opener this evening. Two righthanders going in Yankee Stadium, expect the left handed hitters to populate the lineups.

Xander Bogaerts has been impressive. I feel like he's going to force us to learn how to spell his name.

2 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 5:44 pm

ack, that photo was mean.

3 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:08 pm

Let's Go YAN-KEES! I shouldn't be home but i'm sick. So at least I get to watch the game with yinz. I'm excited to watch Pineda.

4 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:13 pm

Nice snag!

5 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:13 pm

My goodness! Where are the fans? The place is empty.

6 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:14 pm

Well that went well enough

7 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:30 pm

I'm enjoying my two favorite analysts performing together - Cone and Flaherty.

8 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:30 pm

Pineda, The Crooked Splendor.

9 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:40 pm

(5) Am sure they'll announce 40K+. Are the most seats empty too?

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:41 pm

Er...'moat' seats.

11 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:43 pm

Pineda dealing. What a difference if this guy is healthy!

12 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:46 pm

Bleachers look full. Field level seemed about half full, sort of like like late arrivals at Church.

13 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:50 pm

Forget about Bradley, just strike this chump out.

14 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:52 pm

Well done, Michael.

15 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 6:57 pm

Pip Jervis was robbed

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:02 pm

Japan train story interlude: looking out window to platform, 3 white-glove and firm cap wearing station guards are diligently cleaning the platform where some commuter was sick..(too much sake last night,Mr. Salaryman?) When they finished sweeping and washing the guards turned and bowed to us on the train, apologizing for the delay.

17 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:03 pm

[16] Very similar to the IRT.

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:10 pm

Irritating sequence of pitches from Pineda to the douchebeard there.

19 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:11 pm

Buchholz is getting those low calls...

20 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:11 pm

Much, MUCH better.

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:11 pm

Nasty! Atta boy, Pineda!

22 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:11 pm

Oh, very nice.

23 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:11 pm

brutal. no chance on that one haha.

24 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:12 pm

(17) Tee-hee.. (18) Which douchebeard was that?

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:13 pm

I know. "The" douchbeard is an inappropriate phrase. Maybe "#1 douchebeard."

26 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:14 pm

Get a fucking clue, blue.

27 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:16 pm

Oopsies!

28 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:17 pm

Heh.

Hey Clay, remember this guy? Better keep an eye on him at first.

29 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:17 pm

hahaha. he hadn't left the bag. That's kinda funny.

30 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:18 pm

Clay! Hey Clay, look!

31 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:19 pm

I suspect that mlb will legislate how far afield you can move at some point.

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:22 pm

Good work, Red Ass!

33 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:22 pm

yo ho!
Brian McCann, he's my man!

34 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:22 pm

McCann could!

35 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:23 pm

yes! woot!

36 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:23 pm

[31] No chance. imho.

37 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:26 pm

This is going well.

38 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:26 pm

the DP sucks but i'll take that. Every run against this guy is tought to get.

39 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:32 pm

Ooooh.
I blame Jon [1] for this one.

40 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:34 pm

Siddown, junior.

41 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:37 pm

Wow.
Pineda has a high upside. I guess that's what they've been telling us, but now we're seeing it.

42 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:37 pm

[41] yeah, he's legit.

43 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:42 pm

Whoo hoo! Congrats!

44 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:42 pm

Well that's not something I expected

45 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:42 pm

Deanna! I mean i'm sure he's never heard that joke...

46 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:44 pm

I wonder what John's home run call was.

47 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:45 pm

oh my that was ugly gritner.

48 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:48 pm

captain!

49 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:48 pm

Yay!
How you feeling, Laptop?

50 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:48 pm

Jeets, giving back to the crowd.

51 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:50 pm

No problem, Jacoby. You're forgiven for that blunder.

52 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:51 pm

And a RS

53 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:51 pm

yes! damn.

54 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:54 pm

Now it's up to Piñeda. I say he goes two more and then they let the bullpen take it home.

55 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:57 pm

That fat fuck!

56 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:58 pm

Don Orsillo just said: "Ortiz scampers to second..."

57 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:58 pm

Phew, it stayed in.

58 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 7:58 pm

I thought that was gone by the way beltran seemed to be jogging it.

59 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:03 pm

NESN shows this fun fact: the New York team played their first game under the name "Yankees" 101 years ago today.

60 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:08 pm

[59] Wait..they switched from Highlanders only in 1913?? Thought it was earlier..

61 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:09 pm

Hm, too bad.
True Outcomes Nava.

62 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:09 pm

[59] Happy Boithday.

Oof.

63 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:12 pm

ok, pineda looked flat so i'm with you Joe. He looked so good but must have gotten tired.

64 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:12 pm

Not too shabby for the #5 guy. Make me miss West Coast Fat Jesus a little bit less.

65 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:12 pm

I'd leave him in. He didn't look tired at all.

Oh well, maybe this will work out.

66 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:12 pm

Good job, big fella.

Now, hold the line, bully!

67 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:14 pm

Kinda glad Michael isn't happy coming out of the game. Wants to get better

68 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:14 pm

[63] [65] Heh.
I guess "looks tired" is subjective.

69 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:15 pm

The Red Sox have a 13% win expectancy. Feels lower.

70 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:16 pm

[68] haha, i guess so.

71 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:16 pm

David Phelps is warming up???

Puzzling.

72 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:17 pm

Seriously?

73 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:17 pm

Oh cripes.

Wait, huh? Weird call.

74 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:18 pm

Heh. Well, did it hit the ground, or not? Replay please.

Nope. Caught clean.

75 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:19 pm

That was a couple of bizarre moments in a row.

76 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:22 pm

That's an interesting motion how he brings the ball to his side and then across and into his glove. But damn he seems to be losing the zone here.

77 boslaw   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:22 pm

nesn showed closeups of pine tar all over pineda's hands throughout the game. there was so much it was ridiculously obvious.

78 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:22 pm

I do like seeing Pineda cheering on in the dugout.

79 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:22 pm

Ave, Cesar!

80 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:25 pm

[77] They also announced that there's a NESN app you can get that will let you "test your Red Sox IQ".

Red Sox IQ.

The jokes just write themselves, folks.

81 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:26 pm

Cabral drained half of that [69] 13% win expectancy. Nice job.

82 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:27 pm

[80] AKA, negative numbers.

83 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:28 pm

Got 'em.

Now get that one run back and cruise through the ninth.

84 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:29 pm

[82] Where's thelarmis? We need a rim shot.

85 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:29 pm

[81] i forget, where do you check the win expectancies?

86 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:30 pm

[84] two drums and a symbol walk off a cliff...

87 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:33 pm

Happy happy! Big Pine pitched well? This might be the fastest played Yanks-Sox game in years.

88 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:33 pm

Ooooh, good to see the Red Sox have added a neck-tat douche to their roster, they really are becoming the "United Colors of Benetton" of douches ...

89 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:35 pm

You can check win expectancies here. (You can also google "win expectancy finder".)

90 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:35 pm

Find win expectancies buried at bottom of screen on MLB Gamecast

91 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:35 pm

[87] Better than well. Thing of beauty.

92 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:36 pm

[88]. Are there shoes to match the bags?

93 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:37 pm

[89] thanks! yes, i sometimes forget google exists.

[90] didn't know that either. thanks.

94 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:39 pm

Word press is funny. I have a comment awaiting moderation. All I asked in response to 88 is if the color of footwear matched the bags?

95 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:39 pm

[90] No kidding. You mean ESPN Gamecast? I'm not seeing it.

96 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:40 pm

My bad on Gamecast, I had win % mixed up with another stat about chance of scoring run based on current game situation! not shown any more.

97 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:40 pm

One.

98 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:42 pm

[95] Oh, run expectancy?
I like that too :-)

Table here if you're ever interested.

Two.

99 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:42 pm

Folks in the deep seats better pay attention.

100 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:42 pm

[95] ah no worries. That's cool too.

101 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:45 pm

Pineda's 7 Ks will put him tied for first with King Felix in AL for Ks. Tanaka second. Depending on what other pitchers did tonight. This year could get quite exciting if they both keep this up. And if Nova can right his ship.

102 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:45 pm

And that's a wrap.
Mr. Phelps, Mission: Accomplished.

103 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:45 pm

Yes! That's even better.

104 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:46 pm

Big Poopi

105 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:46 pm

Who gets the ninth? Kelley?

106 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:46 pm

David Phelps back from limbo land!

107 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:47 pm

[100] oops. I was not paying enough attention. Pineda has 12 Ks in two games, not 12 + 7.

108 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:51 pm

Who pitches the ninth? I want to go on record as opposing this no Mo policy.

109 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:52 pm

[106] Happy to see I'm not the only one making mistakes tonight! I'm new to this commenting, usually do only on Facebook.

110 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:53 pm

[108] are you new to the banter? I've only recently started spending time here again.

111 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:55 pm

Bring on Betances! Nah, who am I kidding?

112 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:56 pm

[109] Welcome!

113 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:57 pm

[111] ... back!

114 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:58 pm

[109] seamus, you've been around here for years, havn't you?

115 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:58 pm

Wow, Phelpsy. Interesting.
No bullpen roule**e!

116 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:58 pm

[109] Oh, poor reading comp from me...sorry. [112] Yes, welcome 'back!'

117 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:58 pm

[111] [112] haha thanks!

[113] yeah, but not much for the last 2-3 years.

118 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:59 pm

Sit down, Napoli!

119 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:59 pm

Hah! Wow, that was waaaaayyyy inside. Tough crap, beardy.

120 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 8:59 pm

napoli caught napping!

121 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:00 pm

Boston has less than a % of expectancy left.

122 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:01 pm

[118] oh i was looking down. not really napping on that one lol. Maybe the ump was though.

123 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:01 pm

Beauty!
I have a question. Does Phelps really throw a knuckle curve, or is Gameday just guessing?

124 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:01 pm

THAT was a strike!

125 coleman42   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:02 pm

[109] I've been lurking for 5+ years! back to Sliced's arguments with that guy who got booted out of the blog. Guess I'm a slow learner!

126 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:03 pm

Yay!
Ells finished them off.

And bravo, David Phelps. Bravo, sir.

127 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:03 pm

[122] He's not throwing a knuckle curve. Cone would be all over that.

128 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:03 pm

nice job Phelps!!!

129 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:04 pm

Sweet. Atta boy, Dave. Good game all around.

130 seamus   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:04 pm

[124] ah cool. Well, welcome from out of the shadows!

131 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:07 pm

Nothing like a win over the sox for happy sleep.

132 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:09 pm

All seven Pineda Punchadas were swinging. Interesting.

133 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:11 pm

Did YES mention the pine tar on Pineda's hand? Hey, he's the Pine Tree Man, after all. NESN can't stop talking about it.

134 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:17 pm

At Girardi's press conf, they trying to get him to comment on the pine tar. Gerardi saying he saw nothing.

135 RIYank   ~  Apr 10, 2014 9:33 pm

[133] Okay, watched that. He didn't actually say he saw nothing. He said there really wasn't much he could say about it.

My surmise is that it's not actually legal, but teams in general have some kind of agreement that they aren't going to squawk about it. Interesting. (Why not just make it legal?)
