Brrrrr Stick ‘Um

Sorry for the technical difficulties today, guys. I had a feeling that Michael Pineda would get his ass beat around Fenway tonight but I didn’t think the guy would get tossed for an illegal substance–on his neck.

Bright boy.

Yanks down 4-0 in the 4th.

Carry On.

Pineda has nothing if not chutzpah.

2 coleman42   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:51 pm

Welcome back, Alex!

3 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:52 pm

What was I saying about the importance of having a Kangaroo Court last night???

Seriously, not. fucking. acceptable.

4 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:52 pm

I cannot friggin' believe the Yankees let him go out on the mound looking like that. Seriously. WTF! I hope there was an ulterior motive b/c it was flat out stupid as far as I'm concerned. Unless Pineda applied it without anyone's knowledge. Lohud says it will be an automatic 10 game suspension. Bollocks!

5 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:53 pm

Have to think Pineda was acting alone there. I imagine Joe G, Larry R or even CC would have interevened had they seen something.

6 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:57 pm

The *only* mitigating factor that I will entertain, is that because he's coming back from the serious shoulder injury, he's still "needing" the pine tar to believe and have confidence that he can succeed at this level.

Or something ...

7 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:58 pm

Maybe he gripped a bat when the Yankees were up, rested it on his shoulder and pine tar rubbed off on his neck? Yeah, that's the ticket!

8 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 7:58 pm

[5] True, but *nobody* noticed a pine-tar patch on his neck? Seems somewhat dubious ...

9 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:00 pm

Big Pine just exudes tar?

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:00 pm

[8] Well, how often do other players inspect each other's necks for foreign substances? Also, Pineda is rather dark skinned, it's not like it was THAT easy to see...BoSox must have had a telescope on him.

11 Bama Yankee   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:00 pm

Glad to the site is back up. There for a second I was afraid the ejection of a pitcher for a foreign substance carried an automatic suspension of the team's best blog as well... ;-)

12 coleman42   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:02 pm

[11] nice!

13 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:03 pm

With Lackey pitching at Fenway, the Yanks could easily come back.

14 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:06 pm

[10] Hard to say, but it was easy enough to spot that the Umpires did, without leaning in too far for it ...

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:06 pm

FUCK, I hate the slack-jawed, mouth breather.

16 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:09 pm

On the bright side, "Big Pine Tar" is a pretty good nickname.
C'mon, Captain!

17 coleman42   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:10 pm

[15] I Ike him 'cause the Yankees always get to him. Give it time.

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:11 pm

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:15 pm

WHY the FUCK would you bother to seek a 2nd opinion on a partially-torn elbow ligament???

What a waste of time ...

20 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:16 pm

The stupid ... it burns.

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:16 pm

Thank you, Coney.

22 MSM35   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:18 pm

It's cold so they use pine tar instead of the suntan spray that the Sox use during the day.

23 RIYank   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:22 pm

[10] It was really easy to see.

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:28 pm

Yay, a run!

25 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:34 pm

Pineda either is really arrogant or dumb or both. My only beef is that he put the bullpen--and his team in a tight spot for the rest of the night and tomorrow too. I agree with Cult, a Kangaroo Court needs to give him an internal beatdown. I don't know what the locker room atmosphere is like but back in the late '90s this shit would not fly.

26 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:39 pm

Sad to say but I feel the Teix era is kaput. How about McCann at 1B and Gary Sanchez gets a shot in the bigs?

27 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:41 pm

Greetings Gents (and any Ladies?)
Agreed that PinHead wins the Stupid of the Week award.
But how could Girardi et al miss it?
It was obvious from the TV.

28 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:44 pm

27) Apparently he only put it on between the 1 and 2nd innings. So I could see him going back out there without them noticing. But again, I hope someone has a nice long talk with his dumb ass.

29 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:46 pm

I know they'll be a lot of anger but Pineda is still young and has really had a tough time the last two years..hope they'll go easy on him and get his confidence up so he doesn't need any pine-tar, etc.

31 coleman42   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:58 pm

Yanks are going quietly into the night...

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:58 pm

This is horrible.

33 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 8:59 pm

[28] Ok, the between innings thing explains ... a lot. But, still, that shit isn't going to fly ...

34 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:00 pm

[26] Huh? Did he get hurt again? The Yankees don't make the playoffs without him at first.

As Casey Stengel supposedly said, "If you don't know you your first baseman is, you don't have a first baseman."

He gives us leadership, superior defense and stability. This team can do without the extra pop

35 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:02 pm

[28] So I guess he's riding the pine for the rest of the night. (ouch)

36 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:02 pm

I really believe this was much more a case of poor hitting, rather than great pitching.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:05 pm

Well, that's that.

38 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:06 pm

29) Fuck that. He needs a kick in the ass.

39 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:07 pm

Lackey was really good tonight, too.

40 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:08 pm

[28] This should blow over rather smoothly. I remember, after he was already well into his later career, Tommy John got caught with a nail file ON THE MOUND, like a kid with a doobie at a traffic stop. He tried to drop it surreptitiously right in front of the ump. I don't think he even got busted for it.

41 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:10 pm

I'm not so irked that Pineda has chutzpah more than brains but I think he's selfish and dumb for screwing up the bullpen, not to mention the rotation if he gets suspended for 10 games.

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:19 pm

It's not the getting caught ... it's the getting caught after he was blatantly caught doing it before, on national tv, and it was a thing!

I mean, how fucking stupid do you have to be???

43 Simone   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:19 pm

I cannot believe Pineda. What a loser and cheater! Did no one on the Yankees notice the pine tar on his neck?

44 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:24 pm

Well, any team with an obvious cheater deserves to lose.

Tonight, that team was us ...

47 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 23, 2014 9:40 pm

I mean, I'll give Pineda this faint praise, he was at least LESS obvious about than last time, though obviously, nowhere close to hiding it well enough to escape detection ...

[48] Meet at the Guava tree, the black dog runs at night!

50 MSM35   ~  Apr 23, 2014 10:07 pm

Boy we have some self-righteousness on the board tonight. Pineda did what all pitchers do when the weather is cold and they need to get a grip on the ball. Lackey probably had it on his belt. Baseball will get serious about enforcement or they will suspend him for 8 games and pretend he is the only one. Count on the latter.

51 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 23, 2014 10:26 pm

[50] Kenny Rodgers was putting pine tar ON THE BALL in the AL playoffs when he smoked the Yankees many moons ago. As I recall there were absolutely no repercussions.

[43] You're kidding right?

Exhibit A: Hall of Fame member Gaylord Perry. Used an illegal pitch his entire career. Joked about it.

Exhibit B: Future HOFer and the "face of baseball and all things pure," Derek Jeter pretended to get hit by a pitch once to get on base. That's once that we know of. That is premeditated blatant "cheating. No two ways about it.

52 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 23, 2014 10:34 pm

Cheating is banded about too much in this game. For example, why doesn't a player get tossed for pretending to catch a ball that he really trapped? That is cheating in every sense of the word.

53 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 23, 2014 11:02 pm

Yanks are lacking veteran leadership this year with A-Rod missing.

54 coleman42   ~  Apr 24, 2014 7:13 am

Did Cult break his record for most f-bombs dropped during a game?
