Milwaukee is Algonquin for "The Good Land"

2 Greg G   ~  May 9, 2014 4:26 pm

Shluhmeel Shlomozzle Hoffenpepper corporated.

Let's get to the Brew crew early and often. Do they still have that guy sliding into the beer on dingers?

3 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2014 4:45 pm

Lakefront is good ale. They have big music festivals there in the summer. i've played there; pretty cool. Madison is awesome.

WAKA JAWAKA TANAKA!!! (h/t - cult & FZ)

GO YANKS!!!

4 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 4:50 pm

Still not a fan of our pitchers hitting.

5 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2014 4:56 pm

[4] me neither. not in the slightest. worse is if they get on base and have to run...

pitchers pitch, hitters hit. DH in both leagues.

6 Greg G   ~  May 9, 2014 6:32 pm

Nice to see that Torre's # will be retired this summer. I think they are setting it up so Jeter is the last single digit to be retired.

Torre certainly deserves the honor as he outlasted any manager that Steinbrenner hired in his tenure as owner, and that is a feat perhaps more impressive than 4 series rings.

He was the heart of a lot of those teams and seeing him all choked up after big wins was wonderful!

7 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 6:37 pm

[6] And you got the Torre comment #

8 Greg G   ~  May 9, 2014 6:39 pm

(7) Sweet! Thanks Mickey!

9 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 7:27 pm

And after a brief t-storm, I'm back.

10 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 7:43 pm

Nice, Tanaka.

11 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 7:46 pm

Cringe time.

12 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 7:46 pm

Please strike out.

13 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2014 7:48 pm

Do people really enjoy watching pitchers hit?

14 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 7:48 pm

Thank you.

15 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 7:55 pm

Gallardo is good.

But Darvish is utterly dominating the Red Sox, damn.

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 7:58 pm

(6) Hmmm...I think Torre is a phony and kind of a jerk. But still deserved the retired #. Tino's plaque is ridiculous though. Where are Bernie and Willie Randolph?!

Brewers owner interview by their TV crew: 'Derek Jeter is not just one of the greatest players but one of the greatest Americans.'

(Meanwhile in Miami, A-Rod quietly goes shopping in Little Haiti for a Jete voodoo doll...)

17 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:00 pm

Ohhhhh. Too bad.

18 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:02 pm

[16] Yeah, Alex shopping quietly in Miami. I'm trying to picture it.

Ah, there ya go. Tanaka bakontraka.

19 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:02 pm

Oh, nice job, Michael botches Wins Above Replacement. I wonder if Cone is listening.

20 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 8:03 pm

Kay with the 'WAR' explanation!

21 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:05 pm

Oh, it's Winfield, I believe. 1973 future HoFamer...

22 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 8:07 pm

Yes! Big Dave.

Will Kay announce the Torre ceremony? There's bad blood between them right?

23 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:09 pm

[22] I dunno. I don't really pay attention to that stuff.

And [20] Michael thinks 'replacement' means 'an average player'.

24 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:10 pm

The Rangers are starting to drive Laptop nuts. I love that.

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 8:11 pm

[23] He's trying at least. So many TV guys still making fun of new stats (Krukie!)

26 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:11 pm

How the hell did McCann hit the ball through the middle when they had the shift on???

Oh, okay, high liner.

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 8:12 pm

Now that's worth a comment! Is that their 1st 3 run job of the year?

28 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:12 pm

Oh, sweet. Very, very sweet!

Soooooooolarte! Whoa whoa!

29 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:12 pm

Pipp Jervis

32 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:13 pm

[25] Very true. On my drive today I heard one of my local radio guys actually say, seriously and with all sincerity, "The nerds are ruining football." (He thinks the same about baseball, but the topic of the day was the NFL draft.)

33 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:15 pm

GRITNER!

34 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:15 pm

I'm liking this run scoring.

35 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:16 pm

Please strike out again.

36 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:16 pm

Who needs Cano?!?!?

Damn, Gritner made that look like a walk in the park.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:17 pm

[23] Glad I wasn't the only one who caught that ...

38 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:18 pm

I bet John Sterling doesn't have a home run call planned for Tanaka.

39 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:18 pm

thank you. Again

40 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 8:19 pm

[38] 'You can BE my Masa-HIRO!'

I can't remember, why exactly did the Brewers move to the NL and Houston to the AL?

41 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:21 pm

[37] No chance. Lots of nerds here!

42 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 8:21 pm

Well I can't find it again but I read last week the Yankees were the only team left this year without a 3 run homer. Port Jarvis solved that unless I missed one.

43 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:25 pm

[40] The Brewers moved because MLB wanted the leagues each to have an even number of teams. The Astros moved three years ago, basically because MLB changed its mind and wanted to have the same number of teams in each league (I think).

44 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:27 pm

[40] years ago Brewers went to the NL with expansion (Rays?) to create a 14 team AL & a 16 team NL. Problem being that caused a bunch of 5 team divisions with a 6 team NL Central and a 4 team AL West. So move the Astros to the AL West and star a rivalry with the Rangers.

Of course that means an inter league game every night.

45 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:28 pm

Meanwhile... anyone who has access might want to watch the Red Sox game. This is a special game for Darvish through four innings.

46 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:31 pm

[44] Rays and D-Backs, right?

47 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:32 pm

[46] Sounds right.

48 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:33 pm

[45] If it's something special and I should watch it, you should tell me why ...

49 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 8:34 pm

[45] Maybe after the 6th. ; )

50 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:35 pm

[48] Darvish has whiffed eight Sox in four innings, and has not yet had to pitch from the stretch.

51 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:37 pm

[50] You mean he has a PERFECT GAME going???

He's throwing a PERFECT GAME???

A PERFECT GAME that would be awesome!!!

52 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 8:38 pm

[51] Darvish is the Texas pitcher

53 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2014 8:39 pm

54 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 8:39 pm

[51] Hilarious, Michael.

Hey, sorry this is a bit late (my TV is downstairs, Mac up), does anyone know John's HR call for Solarte?

55 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:39 pm

[52] Who's throwing a PERFECT GAME???

56 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 8:42 pm

I had heard about that dude getting clocked in the head by the bat. That's the first I've seen of the video. Holy hell. Ouch.

57 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:42 pm

Nine K, and still perfect through five.

58 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 8:43 pm

[57] Thanks. Would be nice to see the "Shit Sox" (as Nostra calls them) get perfecto'd ...

59 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 8:44 pm

[54] 'Never nervous, Yangervis!' is part of Yankees announcer John Sterling's home run call for the infielder.

[55] Yu

61 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 8:50 pm

[59] Thanks, and "sigh."

62 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:54 pm

[60] Heh.
-So, the Red Sox, they don't have any baserunners?

-Right.

-So this kid Bradley, he lays one down the first baseline. Pitcher goes to cover and the first baseman charges and fields the ball.

-Who?

-No, Choo's couldn't get to it, too far up the line. So the guy picks it up and he tosses it to Yu for the out.

-He tosses it to who?

-Yu.

-To me?

-No, why would he toss it to you?

-So who does he toss it to?

-To Yu.

-Perfect!

-Naturally.

63 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 8:57 pm

Laptop out after 4.1.
Ten hits, four runs.

Hard to believe he's only number three on my Loathsome Boston Starters list.

64 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 9:02 pm

[62] I don't know

65 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:05 pm

Chris Capuano graciously allows Clay's two inherited runners to score, so that's six ER in 4.1 for Laptop.

But back in Milaukee Jetes huddles up for protection, huh?

66 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 9:05 pm

Hmmmm

67 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:06 pm

Uh, no, 8 ER. Wow, how did I miss two runs??? Anyway, plenty of action here to worry about so I'll leave the Rangers to fend for themselves.

94 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:38 pm

But, it's not a hit!

102 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2014 9:49 pm

As I said over at BBTF:

At this point, I think I want Darvish to give up a hit, just so he doesn't have to throw 130+ in the game to throw (or not throw) a no-hitter ...

That being said, he just picked up out #23 ...

103 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 9:50 pm

Me! Flashing the leather

104 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2014 9:51 pm

Hi team!

I'm at my new house for the first night. I don't have tv or wireless set up, so I can't watch the game. And I've balked at switching to ios7, so I can't watch MLB.tv on my phone.

But it seems like a good night for baseball, thus far!

105 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 9:56 pm

In a shockingly sensible moved, NHK switched over to the Shit Sox. What's happening in our game?

106 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 9:57 pm

[105] 5-2 us top of the ninth.

107 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:58 pm

[104] You can at least do Gameday, though, on the phone.

108 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:58 pm

[105] Beltran doubled, Ichiro ran for him and stole third, scored on a sac fly.
Adam Warren set them down 1-2-3.

109 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 9:59 pm

The Rangers' second baseman, who spoiled the perfecto, has a name that looks like someone spilled the Scrabble tiles.

110 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 9:59 pm

I just saw the video on MLB. Holy fucking shit. I can't believe they ruled that an error. I agree, of course, but they never rule than an error. I doubt it stands imo.

111 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:00 pm

They play "Sweet Caroline" in Milwaukee???

112 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 10:01 pm

[110] Strange. It always SHOULD be an error, yet people on Twitter now 'outraged' that it isn't ruled a hit now. Maybe time to change that official scoring practice? Or just get rid of official scorers altogether?

113 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:02 pm

[110] I think it will stand, if the Sox don't get a safety in the ninth.

114 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2014 10:02 pm

Yeah, I'm just following the scoreboard.

Sounds fun in Tejas!

115 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 10:03 pm

[108] Thanks, I saw part of that.

So now I've got John & Suzyn on Gameday radio and the NHK feed of Darvish. But wife just came home and is on the war path, so I need to leave the TV area.

116 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 10:03 pm

Wow..possible No-No, NBA 2nd round of playoffs, and ESPN main page leads with the second day of the NFL draft? Do people actually watch the draft?

117 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:03 pm

Okay, it's Hamma Time!

118 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 10:04 pm

Harold Reynolds is losing his mind on MLB network. "IT SHOULD BE A HIT!" lol.. I like Harold Reynolds. He cracks me up.

119 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 10:04 pm

Brian Roberts set the ACC record for stolen bases in a season playing for his dad. UNC then fired him, so Brian went to You of South Carolina and promptly set the SEC record for SB in a season. Watched that year. Could tell he was special. And helped me realize just how hard it is to be a major leaguer in any sport.

120 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:05 pm

[116] The draft got more viewers yesterday than the NHL playoffs and NBA playoffs combined -- four games, I believe. Incredible.

121 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 10:05 pm

[117] They play 'U Can't Touch This' after K's in Milwaukee :)

122 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 10:06 pm

And Harold's point is if that play happens in the 1st inning, no way it's ruled an error. But due to the circumstances in the 7th, voila! Error. I agree. It's a bullshit ruling even though I agree. MADNESS!

123 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 9, 2014 10:06 pm

[120] Sorry if I'm a snob but that is f#ckin pathetic.

124 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 10:07 pm

[116] Sadly yes. Although, to be fair, football fans probably think following the Hot Stove league is moronic.

125 Boatzilla   ~  May 9, 2014 10:08 pm

[123] Hey, to each his own. I follow baseball 24/7/365 and it's a looooog season to begin with.

126 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:08 pm

127 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 9, 2014 10:09 pm

129 rbj   ~  May 9, 2014 10:09 pm

130 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2014 10:10 pm

The official rule is that it's an error if in "the scorer’s judgment the ball could have been handled with ordinary effort". So it's correctly ruled an error.
But the whole thing is bullshit -- I pay no attention to it except in a potential no-hitter.
