Putting in Work

And so the Yanks keep plugging away. They aren’t a great team but they aren’t a bad one either. They are pretty good. Like so many other teams, they’ve had a lot of injuries.

In the meantime, they are fun to watch and fun to root for, don’t you think?

They outlasted the Cards last night, 7-4, got Hiroki a win, and ended their 9-game road trip, 5-4.

All told…Not bad.

I have really enjoyed watching Ellsbury run, though it can be hard to see well on TV. He is not the fastest guy, but he is really good at stealing bases. A touch of the Great Rickey. Such a cool skill.

I love it when the Yanks play any of the old school teams from the NL like the Cards, Giants, Dodgers and Cubs -- but particularly the Cards. I'm too young to remember the '64 series but there is something gorgeous about the cards Topps released the next season to commemorate the series. That was the last stand of Mickey's Yankees and something about it resonates with me.

Oh and the Dodgers would be a close second because I do remember '77, '78 and '81. I remember the Topps card from the '77 series -- just one card with Reggie on it: "Reggie and Yankees Reign Supreme". And Billy Martin is very prominent in the background.

This series also gave me my new all-time favorite Jeter quote (courtesy LoHud). Told Yadier Molina had said that his dream World Series matchup would be the Cardinals against the Yankees, Jeter said. “My dream World Series is against anybody.”
