Our Man in St. Louie

get-attachment.aspx

That’d be our man Hiroki. Who is still our man even though he hasn’t had much success this year.

Sorry I haven’t been around much since last week. I was in L.A. for the long weekend and didn’t do the smoothest job of leaving instructions for the rest of the Banter-posting crew. Anyhow, my apologies for the inconsistent posting and thanks to Hank, Will and Jon for holding things down.

I’m back now, tired but happy after a great trip, pleased to be back home with The Wife, eager to watch the game tonight.

Here’s the lineup–minus Tex:

Brett Gardner LF
Brian Roberts 2B
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brian McCann 1B
John Ryan Murphy C
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Brendan Ryan SS
Kelly Johnson 3B
Hiroki Kuroda P

McCann at 1st, JR Murphy behind the plate batting 5th.

I wonder if they're going to start trying to get the rook more at bats by using this configuration when they can ...

As I told Jon, we demand a refund.

Seriously, thanks for the blog & game threads.

Hmm. If Solarte played third, Kelly Johnson could play first base. Is it really necessary for Young Jervis to get today off? I know Jeter sits the day before an off day, that's a rule. (Rolls eyes.)

4 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 7:21 pm

They looked low, those first two.

5 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 7:32 pm

Nice, Hiroki.

Woo hoo! Me!

13 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:02 pm

Ring that Bellsbury!!!

14 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:03 pm

Remember, we want the home run after the walks and singles.

15 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:03 pm

[14] Like now?

16 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:05 pm

[14] I will proudly settle for runs after walks and singles ...

17 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 28, 2014 8:05 pm

Slainte!

18 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:05 pm

LIKE THAT ... go JR!

19 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:06 pm

This is going very nicely.

20 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:07 pm

I'll take those non-homers.

21 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:09 pm

Yeah, who needs rally-killers, anyway?

22 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:19 pm

This I do not like

23 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:22 pm

Well, that sure seemed like strike 3 ...

24 coleman42   ~  May 28, 2014 8:23 pm

Hiroki usually good at getting out of jams, like Pettitte...

25 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:23 pm

Uh ... ugh.

26 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 28, 2014 8:24 pm

Good.

27 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:24 pm

Phew!

28 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:29 pm

There are two pitchers now in MLB with a better K/BB ratio than Tanaka. One is David Price. Guess who the other one is. (RBJ may know this...)

29 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:30 pm

Me again!

30 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:31 pm

We've replaced homers by RISP-hits.

31 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 8:31 pm

2 more from the Bellsbury!

32 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:32 pm

Wow. What the hell is going on here??? I like it!

33 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:35 pm

[28] Shoot, I'm not a pitcher. Not Verlander. Scherzer.

34 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:36 pm

Card's pitching coach doubles as the Good Year Tire blimp hanger.

35 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:46 pm

Siddown.

He still looks good to me.

36 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:47 pm

[33] Nope.
It's Phil Hughes.

37 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:47 pm

(I thought you might know because Pinto posted the list.)

38 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:51 pm

[36, 37] was that where I saw Phil doing well in Minny? Busy with a library shift, re-fi and allergies so my brain is verklempt.

39 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 8:53 pm

That Jack-in-the-Box mascot in the background looks like a serial killer.

40 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 8:54 pm

Maybe, but I was just thinking of this.

41 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 28, 2014 8:59 pm

What's happening Banter? I think I'm repeating myself from years back (been on the Banter too long..??) but I don't like the Cardinals. Maybe the lingering stink of Tony La Russa or their obnoxious fans..great uniforms though.

Go Go Hiroki!

42 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 9:01 pm

[40] Can't access his site on my Touchpad. It blanks out.

43 RIYank   ~  May 28, 2014 9:06 pm

[42] He has a lot of ads with fancy Java stuff, I think. Anyway, it's an entry that starts off on Greinke's control and then lists the K/BB leaders, and he tells you how many guys had a ratio better than 4.0 in each of various years... but I was really just interested in those top three. (Tanaka: 7.9; Hughes: 8.3; Price: 10.5)

44 rbj   ~  May 28, 2014 9:07 pm

Gotta tap out, lots of work in the morning

45 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 9:08 pm

[41] What up, OK?

46 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 28, 2014 9:16 pm

[45] Yo Cult, rocking, rolling and swinging here as usual. Went to see a live show by the Frode Gjerstad Trio from Norway, check them out. Earth-shakingly loud in a small club.

2 of 3 from the Cardinals is great. But I'm really over the Kelly Johnson Era now..

47 Mattpat11   ~  May 28, 2014 9:29 pm

One of these days we'll find that thing that Matt Thornton is good at. We have two years.

48 YankInEugene   ~  May 28, 2014 9:49 pm

WTF. Why let Betances throw one pitch and take hm out the next inning?

49 Mattpat11   ~  May 28, 2014 9:49 pm

Jesus Christ is there anyone in the Yankees cast of infielders that isn't a horror show in the field?

50 seamus   ~  May 28, 2014 10:05 pm

oi that was awful.

51 seamus   ~  May 28, 2014 10:30 pm

Solarte really struggling. Makes me sad.

52 Mattpat11   ~  May 28, 2014 10:39 pm

I feel like I've seen this movie before

53 seamus   ~  May 28, 2014 10:41 pm

54 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 28, 2014 10:42 pm

C'mon, Dave!

55 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 28, 2014 10:43 pm

That's a beaut. Uncle Charlie.

56 seamus   ~  May 28, 2014 10:43 pm

57 cult of basebaal   ~  May 28, 2014 10:43 pm

The final nail has been hammered!!!

59 thelarmis   ~  May 28, 2014 10:45 pm

Damn italics...

60 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 28, 2014 10:48 pm

A few bent nails, but they finally driven home. Hey! The Yankees took a series against a really good team in their ballpark with a lot of pieces missing. Toronto has won 9 straight, that won't last.

61 MSM35   ~  May 28, 2014 11:12 pm

Seeing McCann at first reminds me of the time when Fernando Valenzuela was pitching a no-hitter. The writers asked Pedro Guerrero what he was thinking with two out. He said he hoped they wouldn't hit the ball to him. They asked what else. He said that he hoped they wouldn't hit the ball to Sax.
