I made the mistake of reading FanGraph's recent article about The Captain..Oy Vey, it ain't pretty...

The guy is ancient and has a little more than 3 months left in his career. What? Did they give some nifty analysis that he's lousy now? That's a fucking scoop.

[2] Haha, yes yes, I know! But the numbers were shocking to see in detail..I hadn't been following so closely. Summary: he can't get a hit on fastballs.

4 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 11, 2014 9:16 pm

Except that one.

3. And that's no shit. We know he can't catch up with a good fastball now. Just seems like stating the obvious.

[4] Ah, I missed the first inning. 9-pitches and out for Tanaka, nice.

6 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 11, 2014 9:49 pm

This M's lineup is horrible..Tanaka should 'Maddux' them tonight.

7 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 10:32 pm

So I'm watching Tanaka (finally) for the first time.

Jesus.

Motherfucker can pitch.

It's scintillating watching this guy. Striking guys out on three pitches...

Man, he's something else.

9 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 10:44 pm

tanaka-san's ERA is at 1.91, after 5.

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 11, 2014 10:45 pm

[8] Hey Weeping, Tanaka IS awesome. But the Mariners are horrible..it helps!

[7] thelarmis, what do you know about drummer Simon Phillips? Worth checking out his live show, he's in town here with a new band..

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 10:50 pm

[8] You've been missing out, he's worth the price of admission, as they say. If you watch one Yankees' game in five, make it his ...

14 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 10:55 pm

[10] i know a ton about simon phillips. all you need to know is he's easily one of THE greatest drummers who ever lived and is historically respected as such. you should *absolutely* go check out his performance!

21 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:03 pm

Captain!

and Tanaka now has 100 strikeouts.

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:04 pm

Captain sure seemed slow in bouncing up and trying for 3rd ... No harm, no foul, though ...

23 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:16 pm

that was a nicely turned DP!

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:19 pm

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:30 pm

I was hoping for a ground ball double play but that'll do. ; )

28 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:36 pm

Joe Beimel is from my Alma Mater. Go Dukes! : )

29 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:44 pm

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:45 pm

33 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:49 pm

For fuck's sakes, Roberts. Bollocks!

Well, fucking bollocks.

Thanks for the error, Brian!

39 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:52 pm

the roberts play really shoulda been an error.

fuck.

40 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:52 pm

[38] ruled a hit! home town bollocks...

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:53 pm

[40] It was an error.

42 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:53 pm

10 K's

43 Mattpat11   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:53 pm

Okay, one more

44 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:53 pm

[39] Well, at least he's cheaper than paying All-Star and future HOFer Robbie Cano!

45 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:54 pm

[41] did they change the call? originally, it was called a hit and tanaka's ERA climbed above 2...

46 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:54 pm

TanaKKKKKKKKKKa!!!

47 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:55 pm

[41] they're still calling it an infield single.

bollocks.

48 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:55 pm

[45] No, but I don't bother pretending that the current system is remotely resembling objective. It was a hit because they're playing at Safeco, no other reason ...

49 Mattpat11   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:55 pm

Still an awesome game

50 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:56 pm

Nasty. Helluva game by Tanaka. He's The Man.

51 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:56 pm

11 K's!

WIN!!!

52 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:56 pm

[48] yeah, they said it was a hit 'coz it was a fast runner...and they're at safeco.

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:57 pm

I love that Tanaka seemed pissed with the fact that he gave up *any* runs in the game ...

54 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 11, 2014 11:58 pm

I'm calling back to back 2014 & 2015 Cy Young awards for Japanese pitchers. Tanaka takes it this year and then a royally-pissed off Yu Darvish goes 25-3 next year with 300Ks.

55 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 12, 2014 5:24 am

[54]Interesting. It will be stiff competition this year with Buehrle, Darvish, Scherzer and Hernandez all starting strong. Then there is Night of the Living Scott Kazmir.

I bet Tanaka has a better chance at rookie of the year (even though it's a dubious award for former Japanese pros).

56 RIYank   ~  Jun 12, 2014 5:37 am

[55] It will be close between Tanaka and Hernandez. They're neck-and-neck right now, each one pulling ahead the day he pitches. I think Tanaka should get an edge (or Hernandez a penalty) for the ballparks -- not quite as impressive to have a 2 ERA in Safeco as in YS2. (Although still very impressive!) That's why Tanaka's ERA+ is superhuman even though his actual ERA is a bit higher than King Felix's.
