And Nick Swisher hit a game-ending grand slam this afternoon in Cleveland as the Indians beat the Angels in 10 innings.

[1] Cool hit bro

3 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 5:36 pm

So, who will pitch the seventh and eighth innings tonight? I won't be pessimistic by asking about the sixth.

4 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:12 pm

Phew. Don't run into Mark. He's fragile.

5 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:12 pm

Of course Melky would get a hit.

6 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:16 pm

Now that Cano is gone, Melky on the Yankees next year when he's a FA?

7 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:16 pm

C'mon Phelps. Do better! :)

8 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:19 pm

OUT!

9 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:19 pm

Mr. Phelps. We will have to disavow all knowledge of you. (I hope not)

10 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:20 pm

challenge!

11 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:20 pm

Leiter vindicated.

Too funny.

12 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:22 pm

Melky cut down by the Yankees. That last sequence might be the turning point of the game.

13 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:24 pm

Ok, here's something about this replay business. I don't like the idea to begin with because I tend towards knee-jerk traditionalism.

That said, I could live with it if there were some element of risk involved, if the umpires and the players were on even footing.

One should NOT be allowed to use intel from video to mount a challenge. Instead, a challenge should only be initiated by the player who is involved. Or *maybe* by anyone on the field or in the dugout.

But it's just too easy if all you have to do is ask someone watching footage. I mean, why have umpires on the field at all, then? Why not just reassign them to the camera crew and let them ump from there?

14 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:25 pm

Gardy!

15 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:26 pm

[13] Well, I get your point, but I think this way they get it right more often and I like those results better. It's a bit of a trade off in terms of what's more important to each of us.

16 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:27 pm

[9] Ghost protocol.

(I know, I'm mixing media.)

17 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:27 pm

That's become a Jeter special!

18 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:28 pm

Good start.

19 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:29 pm

Me gets a run in.

20 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:29 pm

[15] I do like the getting it right part, but I really don't like a 3 minute review that shows that the tag at second on a steal actually missed the player by two inches.

21 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:29 pm

[15] Well, fair enough, but if getting it right is the highest priority, then clearly the most logical thing to do would be to have the umps ump from the booth. There's just zero reason for them to be on the field in that case.

22 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:29 pm

yay a run!

23 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:31 pm

(13) live ball plays have to be called in real time. But I get your point. I sometimes wish that balls and strikes were called by machine...

24 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:31 pm

[20] Fair enough. They do need to continuously work on efficiency.

[21] It's a fair thought, though I think at least one of them would need to be on the field so the players can be told the call. And there would need to be a quick way to signal things mid-play, such as fair or foul ball on a close one down the line.

25 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:32 pm

[23] It could still be real time if the home plate ump was in the booth. Just push a button to render the verdict on the scoreboard.

26 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:33 pm

argh.

27 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:33 pm

Sigh.
You hate to see that.

28 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:33 pm

Great throw by Kratz. If it was on the bag Jeter would have been safe.

29 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:34 pm

[24] Yes, good points.

30 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:34 pm

Okay, I have a confession. I am watching Greece play Japan right now. Listening to the baseball.

I'm embarrassed, but I felt I was living a lie if I didn't confess.

31 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:37 pm

[30] Phelps just karim garcia'd the batter. I can't believe you missed that!

32 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:38 pm

[30] hahahahaah

Ten Hail Mary's and two Our Father's.

33 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:38 pm

[31] Who?

34 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:40 pm

[33] was that a no no reference?

35 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:41 pm

[32] How about if I say ten "Hail Andy"s and two "Our Closer"s?

The match is an exciting nil-nil tie, by the way, in the 84th minute. So, yeah, I got it bad.

36 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:42 pm

[33] [34] Heh, no. Think about it.

37 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:42 pm

[34] Who is Karim Garcia. Old reference.

38 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:45 pm

Wayne Tolleson playing second base for Toronto.

39 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:47 pm

[36] [37] ok, i do recall now there being something along those lines. Memory must be going...

40 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:48 pm

[39] I don't remember how it got started.

41 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:50 pm

[38] The little pitcher? Who's older than I am?

[39] Pedro.

42 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:53 pm

And the soccer match ends in a thrilling nil-nil draw. (Actually it is huge for the Greeks, since it keeps them alive, and Japan are better, and Greece got a red card ejection early.)

43 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:55 pm

Beltran Beats Bautista!

44 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:55 pm

Beltran sneaked right on in there!

45 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:56 pm

Damn, should have said:
Beltran Beats Bautista's Bazooka!

47 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 6:59 pm

gotta love that 50 pitch count.

48 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:02 pm

Ugh. Remember when Jetes was the guy you wanted to be up with two out and the bases juiced?

49 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:02 pm

0-2 Derek? Really?

50 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:02 pm

Ah Derek, it would have been magic.

52 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:10 pm

Damn you Melky!

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:11 pm

And then ... a 2 run jack.

I'll be leaving now ...

54 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:12 pm

Fuck.

55 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:12 pm

[53] Happy Phelps Day!

56 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:17 pm

In Phelps' defense giving up two runs with a Yankee Stadium special, and then recovering is not so bad.

57 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:17 pm

I like Ellsbury's swing.

58 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:18 pm

Me!!

59 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:20 pm

Dang. Jacoby won't challenge.
I guess the ball was hit too hard.

60 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:20 pm

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict the game won't end 2-2.

61 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:20 pm

[56] Phil Hughes Made Me Cry.

62 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:22 pm

[60] Olé, olé-olé-olé! Olé... Olé!

63 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:23 pm

What's the count?

I thought that was strike three.

64 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:23 pm

Uh.
Well, the first two strikes were foul balls, so I'm guessing that was indeed strike three.

65 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:23 pm

[61] My crying days were over! Phil Hughes made me drink.

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:23 pm

What in the name of fuck was that?

67 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:24 pm

Fly ball, please. Preferable a very, very long one.

68 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:24 pm

Dammit, McCann!

69 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:25 pm

We're not going to score this run, are we?

70 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:25 pm

Jacoby is very good at running.

71 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:25 pm

Holy fuck!

That took BALLS!

72 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:26 pm

ooh that was close.

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:26 pm

It never even occurred to me he'd tag on that one.

Wow.

74 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:26 pm

I'll take it.

75 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:26 pm

oh he dropped the ball. I totally missed that. He would have been out I think too.

76 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:26 pm

[71] And wheels.

77 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:27 pm

Man, Ellsbury is my kind of guy. He's a valuable player.

78 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:28 pm

So we're 2-for-5 with RISP, scored three runs, but only on sac flies.

Can't predict baseball.

79 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:29 pm

[77] I always considered him overrated, but he's surely our MVP. Well, among position players.

80 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:33 pm

wow. I don't think i've seen that called in a long time.

81 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:33 pm

Wow. Never seen that one before.
[78] You are correct.

82 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:34 pm

This is the hardest rule in baseball, I think. How interference gets called.

83 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:35 pm

Oh, ffs.

Let's just get on with it.

84 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:36 pm

holy mess.

85 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:36 pm

Okay, but it's not that hard. How on earth could Navarro be safe on first??? Deep confusion.

86 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:38 pm

I saw Clay Bucholz pitch this afternoon for Pawtucket. He's just as ugly in person. : ) Unfortunately, he tossed 6 shutout innings..

87 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:38 pm

Hard to believe that it's only the fourth inning.

88 monkeypants   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:38 pm

OK, I've never actually seen offensive interference called in a game before. That said, the result doesn't make any sense. I thought the ball is dead at the moment of interference, the interferring player is called out and the other runners go back to the bases they started from. So shouldn't that mean the runner goes back to homeplate and his AB continues?

89 monkeypants   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:39 pm

[78] Well, that's doing it the right way.

90 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:40 pm

[87] I know.

91 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:43 pm

This could be a four hour 9 inning game.

92 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:43 pm

[88] I know.
I am trying to research this, but I'm a bit drunk and I keep getting mixed up.

93 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:49 pm

I wish the team would start hitting.

94 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:53 pm

[42] Terrible result for Japan, up a man and can't score?

So what I miss here on Phelpsy Day?

RIP Horace.. :(

95 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:54 pm

Okay, I think I understand it.

When the runner interferes unintentionally with a fielder's attempt to play the ball, the play is dead. This means Teixeira cannot put out the batter by catching the fly ball (because nobody can be put out when the play is dead). Runners may not advance, except that runners (including the batter) already in the act of advancing may take the base they were heading toward.

So that's why Navarro was ruled safe at first.

I mean, that's the best I can do. Not confident about this.

96 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:56 pm

[95] Which rule is that? I'm still sober.

97 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 7:57 pm

[94] I think a different Horace Clarke passed away, not our long time Yankee.

There he goes again.

He's such a good hitter. He just hits it where it's pitched.

Funny to see Phelps look for the ball and react like it was animation, when he found it. Reminded me of little league for some reason.

Yay!

147 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:29 pm

[145] He just lost it. All between the ears, 100%.

As Cult intimated, they put him in the rotation for a while, and that may well have been the cause, I dunno. He hit batters like crazy, they sent him to Pawtucket and he hit batters there... it was awful.

148 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:29 pm

Good job, Phelpsy!

Now, who the hell is available in the bully?

149 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:31 pm

[148] Fuck all. Not Betances, who had to pitch yesterday with a four run lead. Adam Warren maybe for an inning, his two were fairly easy. D-Rob for one. So I'd say we need one inning out of the scrubs.

150 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:33 pm

Warren might be available for an inning

151 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:33 pm

At least he starts it.

159 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:41 pm

[156] He left 22 loopy.

160 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:41 pm

Hey, Brian!!

Okay, I allow that, that's not covered by [157].

161 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:41 pm

I'm loving this running game.

162 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:42 pm

Come on, Brett, don't the fuck strike out.

163 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:43 pm

Good.

Hang in there.

164 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:43 pm

And I'm going to give Brett permission to steal.

165 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:44 pm

[162] Interesting! Not, "Don't strike the fuck out"?

166 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:45 pm

I'm kind of so afraid Derek will bounce into a DP that I would kind of prefer to see him try to bunt Gardner over to give Ellsbury a chance to drive in two.

167 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:45 pm

[165] I really meant it. Really trying to get his attention.

168 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:48 pm

Yay!

Wow, that was a play. It was a play, and the got a run because of it. I'll be damned.

Can't predict baseball.

169 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:48 pm

Wow.

Jesus, that was lucky.

I guess that's even better than my bunt idea.

170 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:48 pm

Jeter saved by a moving Gardner.

171 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:48 pm

nice!

172 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:49 pm

Man, is the ball dying out there tonight? I swear there have been several occasions where I was convinced the ball would travel farther than it did.

173 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:50 pm

Dang, missed that. Had to out the dogs to bed.

174 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:52 pm

[173] It was a hit-and-run (I think, not a straight steal), Gardner took off and Jeter's would-be GIDP turned into an RBI.

175 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:55 pm

[174] Thanks. Looks like Phelps for hitters 8 & 9

176 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:55 pm

Ahhhhh.
Good work, Phelpsy.

I'm starting to not hate him, I have to admit.

177 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:56 pm

Clap clap clap clap!

Bravo, sir.

178 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:57 pm

One. More. Out.

179 monkeypants   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:57 pm

[174] So, by sending Gardner, Girardi converted Jeter's AB from one of moral failing to an example of selflessly playing teh game teh right way and doing what it takes to get the run home.

180 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:58 pm

[176] What's to hate?

He's a cromulent back-end starter.

181 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:59 pm

STRIKE THREE!

Oh, that was sweet!

182 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:59 pm

Goddam.

Okay, I am officially won over. Phelpsy da man.

183 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 19, 2014 8:59 pm

Well hells bells. Good on ya' Phelpsy! This Bud's for you.

184 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:00 pm

GOOD JOB PHELPSY!!!

185 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:00 pm

[179] Yes. The fragility of virtue.
And, the beauty of smallball. By forsaking the selfish longball, you convert your teammates to virtue.

186 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:00 pm

Day-um. Phelpsie for the 7th too. CC who?

187 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:01 pm

[180] I'm not sure. I just despised him. But it's over. I'm over it. I feel a lot better.

The bourbon doesn't hurt, either.

188 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:04 pm

Now, how about 5 more runs.

Meanwhile, I amuse myself by feeding some bastard aphids to my ladybugs.

Feast! FEAST MY MINIONS!!!

189 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:05 pm

Through the shift ... nice!

190 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:06 pm

Overthrowing. Take something off

191 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:07 pm

[188] Whoa. You take this Baal thing seriously, huh?

192 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:09 pm

I'd like to point something out.

Yesterday:
Whitley. Warren. Ramirez. Betances. Robertson. Nine innings, almost all of them grade-A.

Today:
Seven innings of Phelps, also grade-A.

The common thread: all home-grown.

Looks like Shawn Kelley will break the string though. (At least the home-grown part; I hope not the grade part.)

193 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:09 pm

Dang, Ichiro.

194 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:10 pm

Shit, thought he got less of that.

195 thelarmis   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:10 pm

You can't bring up Karim Garcia and not expect me to be summoned!

Ok, back to work I go. Have to submit my final grades now that the quarter just ended...

GO YANKS!!! GO BANTER!!!

196 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:12 pm

[191] Those little orange bastards are all over my butterfly weeds (milk thistle). Like, this aggression will not stand, man!

197 thelarmis   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:12 pm

RI - I have out a lot of A's, too. But also a lot of non-A grades...

198 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:14 pm

[197] Good.

I hate grades, actually. But, ya gotta.

199 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:14 pm

C'mon Jervis, work it and hurt it!

202 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:15 pm

Okay, I'll take that.

My god, five of our RBI are on non-hits. Amazing.

203 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:15 pm

Very nice!

I'll take that shit.

204 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:15 pm

[202] Wow. That is.

Just goes to show, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Walk's not as good as a hit, but that'll do, Port, that'll do ...

206 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:16 pm

[201] Well, that's just, like your opinion, man!

207 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:18 pm

[204] Yeah, you should drop in on Cult of Baal. He can feed aphids to his ladybugs while you skin cats.
Shit is getting medieval.

Kaboom! That. Was not good.

211 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:27 pm

Oh goody. Matt Thornton time.

217 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:30 pm

Very close, but I think Tesh stayed on the bag.

It's a mistake to go to Thornton.

219 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:33 pm

Y'know MLBAM ... I pay for my MLB.tv subscription and because of that, I'm not really happy about ANY ads.

But if you ARE going to show ads, HOW ABOUT YOU DON'T SHOW THE SAME FUCKING COMMERCIAL EVERY SINGLE FUCKING HALF INNING?!?!?!?!?!?

Ah, thank you, much better.

226 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:41 pm

[221] Adam Warren, I believe.

227 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:42 pm

Ah, the allure of Goose Gossage Day at the Stadium.

Bring your kids out early to meet Goose on the mound and he'll yell at them to get off his lawn!

228 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:45 pm

That's one.

229 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:46 pm

So, if he gets Rasmus, does Thornton get to pitch to Tolleson for the S?

230 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:47 pm

Never mind.

231 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:47 pm

Ooh, that hung up there nicely.

234 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:55 pm

Come on, Adam! Just do it!

235 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 9:56 pm

shit, kazmir passed Tanaka in the lead for ERA in the AL. I really liked Tanaka being #1.

243 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 10:04 pm

[242] Wow, really?

Still, Trop vs. YS2. And strikeouts. Tanaka is the Cy front-runner.

244 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2014 10:06 pm

Oh, not Trop, he's in Oakland, of course.
Maybe the Red Sox will hang a few on him. (Not that I'm rooting for that.)

245 seamus   ~  Jun 19, 2014 10:08 pm

[244] not sure i can root for that. But the next team...
