BoSox have no base runners through four, against Quintano.

2 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 5:06 pm

Walk, walk, single in the sixth ends the perfecto, no-no, shutout. Papi doubles in another, 2-1 Bad Sox.

7 am flight for me tomorrow morning, off to San Antonio, so no game threads for me until the All Star Game.

Tremendous headline-photo combination, Alex. Pitch poifict.
Just caught the tailend of a conversation with Cone on espn radio in which I heard for the first time that Napoli called Tanaka an "idiot"for grooving him a fastball. Usually I can ignore chippy comments from Red Socks, especially when they're toiling in AL East irrelevance, but I've never wanted as much to slap Napoli in the mouth as I do now

[4] Huh, I've wanted to slap him in the mouth many times. (It would be best to wear gloves -- the beard, you know.) He pulled a Buckner yesterday, which was delightful, but the BoSox somehow pulled the game out of thin air, after being completely dominated by Chris Sales.

Uehara just blew a 2-run lead in the ninth. BoSox batting in the bottom.

Gawd.
I'm not fond of Phelps Day.

7 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:27 pm

5) I just thought it was a douchier than normal Red Sock comment, and unduly disrespectful to Tanaka. I must have avoided the media the day after that loss because this was the first I'd heard of it.

8 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:28 pm

Robin Ventura just ordered Stephen Drew to be intentionally walked.

I think that's one of the signs of the apocalypse.

9 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:29 pm

Oh, sorry, for those who don't follow the Red Sox: Drew is batting .128.

10 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:33 pm

And Mike Carp wins it with a tenth-inning single.

The karma for a Stephen Drew IBB is hellish. (Hm, mixing religions a bit, but you get the point.)

11 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:38 pm

10) If I told you a guy named Mike who is a four-letter c-word won the game for the Red Sox, would you think I meant Carp?

12 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 6:43 pm

[11] :-)

13 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 7:06 pm

Oh, jeez.
Whew.
Thanks, Jacoby.

Truly we are at our beads!

16 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 7:41 pm

Unbelievable.

Frankie must be wondering what the hell he did in a past life or something.

18 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 7:57 pm

Too bad rbj isn't watching. It's a good Jacoby day! In the field at least.

19 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:02 pm

Six weeks.
Well, could be worse. I mean, I don't know if the Yankees can survive those six weeks, but it's better than surgery.

20 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:05 pm

Of f%ck..torn UCL for Tanaka...

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:05 pm

[19] Only if it works ... and by "works" I also include "doesn't leave him diminished to any significant degree".

Plenty of ways that *not* having surgery is as bad, or worse, than having it ...

22 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:08 pm

19) Is partial tear just postponing the inevitable TJ surgery?

23 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:15 pm

[22] Seems like it to me ...

24 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:17 pm

It could be.
If the tear is tiny it might not need any repair at all. But ligament tears don't heal, so if it's significant it eventually has to be fixed surgically.

Here's my prediction (over on BBTF):

[blockquote]
Sigh.

Seriously, why does this seem like worse than the "worst case scenario" ... like, they'll waste 6-8 weeks "resting" the injury, then waste 6-8 weeks "rehabbing" it, then waste a stupid amount of time trying to "strengthen" it and THEN finally, belatedly, admit defeat and have the surgery ... and thus, having pissed around for a ridiculous amount of time, wasted essentially 1.5 - 2 years.

Blargh.
[/blockquote]

26 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:24 pm

[25] Blargh ... well, you can get what I was going for ...

27 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:25 pm

[26] I'm usually an 'Arghh..' fellow but can appreciate the way the 'Bl..' rolls off the tounge..

[25] PUNCHES SELF IN FACE ...

29 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:27 pm

The Tanaka news is just mad depressing. We're pretty much toast for this year right? I mean, I don't see Phelps and Kuroda as our aces. Seriously, am I missing someone?

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:29 pm

[29] tl;dr?

We're fucked.

31 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:32 pm

Uh oh.
Phelps for the seventh was quite a gamble.

32 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:33 pm

Still kind of in shock..Nova, Pineda, CC, Tanaka all go down before the ASB???

33 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:33 pm

To be perfectly honest, I think we were already toast.

Now we're burned toast.

34 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:34 pm

Matt Thornton.
I'll be relieved (so to speak) if we get out of this inning with the lead.

35 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:34 pm

I LIKE Phelps-"y" ... if only for the fact that he has a noir-ish, retro-grade "20th Century" mug.

Mug, says I!

36 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:35 pm

[32] yeah, a couple of them were risks, but all of them? Unreal.

38 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:36 pm

... or tied, even.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:37 pm

LULZ ... Will Carroll ...

40 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:38 pm

... or down a run.

Matt Thornton. Lefty Speshulist.

41 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:38 pm

I picked a bad season to give up drinkin'.

42 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:38 pm

Motherfucker!

43 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:38 pm

Well, ain't THAT FUCKING SPECIAL!?!?!?!!?

44 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:39 pm

[41] You picked a bad season to stop sniffing glue ...

45 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:40 pm

[37] Interesting.
An orthopedic surgeon told me that ligaments do not repair themselves. But Carroll's guy says otherwise, so that's good.

46 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:41 pm

well damn. this game just went to shit.

47 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:41 pm

Shit.

48 RIYank   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:41 pm

We have to have Matt Thornton. Because otherwise, who would get the lefty batters out in key situations?

49 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 10, 2014 8:46 pm

[44] RIP Leslie Nielsen.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:06 pm

[45] At this point, is anyone willing to accept Carroll's guesses at the change of seasons???

He's pretty much the Dick Morris of baseball prognostications ...

51 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:16 pm

Yeah ... ME GONE!

52 jjmerlock   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:24 pm

Just tuned in for the Tanaka news. I'm opening a vein.

Lovely, nice play Jeet.

53 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:24 pm

[51] lol. have a good evening cult. or at least a better rest of the evening.

54 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:29 pm

55 seamus   ~  Jul 10, 2014 9:29 pm
