No Flipping

lynn-swann-john-stallworth(iooss)

I was a big NFL fan growing up but am a casual fan at best now. Still, I’ve watched every Super Bowl since the Rams almost upset the Steelers 35 years ago. I’m sure I’ll watch this year’s game, too, but for the first time that I can remember I’ve entertained thoughts of skipping it because I find both teams so unlikable.

Who are you guys pulling for?

Lived in Seattle for a year, plus a chance to root against a Boston team, so I'll go Seahawks.

An awesome halftime show?

I don't care about either team and I can't find a reason to root for one over the other. If the Pats win, here in New England it be impossible to avoid hearing it mentioned for the 2 weeks after the Super Bowl, particularly because the Bruins are so-so at beast and the Celtics are really bad . . . but that isn't enough reason for me to root for the Seahawks, either.

I know this - I can't wait to go out to dinner on Super Bowl Sunday night, because after 5PM, the local restaurants will be completely empty. :)

Alex, I was like you as a kid and as an adult in this respect. I know exactly what the pics above depict without needing to go near Google, but I probably couldn't give you three details about the last 10 years of Super Bowls, even though I've watched most of them. (I don't have a perfect streak -- one year, for example, a friend convinced me that Super Bowl Sunday was the best day to find uncrowded ski slopes, and though he turned out to be wrong, it was worth the trip.)

I do plan to watch the game this year, but mainly as an excuse to eat chips and get my annual Super Bowl Slurpee and watch the commercials with my kids, who could hardly care less about the game but enjoy vetting the ads, so to speak.

Again without looking it up, I'm willing to bet any amount of money that the pic on the left of Stallworth's catch was the cover of SI the following week.

The funny thing is that sometimes I don't care about the teams so I just watch for the ads and hope for a good game. But this year I just dislike both teams. I mean, who around these parts wants New England to have another championship? Then again, sometimes looking at the Seahawks--a team I liked in the 1980s--I find myself thinking, shit, maybe I want the Pats to beat those suckers.

I'm definitely rooting and for the Pats. I pay zero attention to football off the field, personalities, rule breaking etc, but on, the Pats are really fun to watch. Remind me of the Yanks around 2000, not always the best just really hard to beat. Always seem to be in it.

Since the Steelers are not playing my only shit to give is that the patriots lose in the most painful way possible.
