Second Comes First

castrothrow

Word has the Yanks moving Adam Warren–good out of the pen, good in the starting rotation, and the ever-likable Brendan Ryan–to Chicago in exchange for second baseman Starlin Castro.

I really like Warren–and love Ryan, and I’m sorry to see them go. But Castro is plus, man. Without knowing too much about him this strikes me as a win-win.

Best part of the deal is Ryan going to the Cubs.

I like it. Only 25, change of scenery guy, young & athletic. We probably saw the best of Warren anyways.

VERY improtant question from Jazx Jr which I promised to put on the Banter: 'They won't play Stephen Drew again next season, right Daddy? I don't like watching him at bat.' 'No one does Jr..no one does. In fact, let me introduce you to a man named Dimelo..'

2) Ha!. Yeah, I think we've seen the last of ol' Mr. Drew!

Eh.
He's an average fielder, and an average hitter. Which admittedly beats the shit out of Stephen Drew, but is still hard to get excited about.

From the previous thread:

Blech.

Color me unimpressed.

I'd much rather have Warren + the Ackley & Refsnyder platoon + 38 million bucks, especially since ownership and the F.O. has been pitching a ##### about not being willing or able to add salary.

OPS+
2013: 73
2014: 115
2015: 83

Given Warren's ability to pitch in short relief, long relief and start ... and do a credible job in each, and given that a good chunk of our projected starting rotation next year is a) mediocre b) injury prone and/or coming off injury or c) both ... I have a feeling we're going to be missing Warren a lot more than we're going to be loving the upgrade at 2nd.

[4] I think it's exciting to have some younger players with upside. Now get Jason Heyward's deal signed ASAP and we're moving along nicely..towards an 'H&H Bros' t-shirt in 2018..

Harper&Heyward, Ahoy, boyeeeeee!

I caught this just now on my local news. I like it for the sole reason it's Yankees news in early December. Didi to Castro to Teix/Bird.

Yeah, fair enough, both Ara and Mr OK Jazz. For some reason I'm not in the hot stove mood. I'll be in NY this weekend, maybe that will light my fuse!

Heyward, Harper, & Heathcott?

[2] Jazx Jr knows futility when he sees it, even at his very young age. Good for him!

Well, not a bad move. I was feeling that Warren had peaked. I could be 100% wrong of course. Still Castro is young and if last year (his runner up for career worst) is the worst he does that's practically an all star hitter on this team. It's a bit unsettling that 2 of his last 3 years are his worst, but the rest are all good. And we need more players who can hit for average, so if he can get that back up around .300 that'd be great.

I like it in theory, but part of me worries that Starlin is on the Miggy Cabrera waistline expansion plan, and he does not hit well enough to justify that.

16 Alex Belth   ~  Dec 9, 2015 1:19 pm

The trouble with Castro is his rep as a no-goodnik. He's been in some messy spots--accused of beating up a woman, being involved in a murder in DR. Alex Rodriguez, Tony Pena and company are going to have their hands full methinks.

Gotta think Cashman vetted him thoroughly before pulling the trigger if that is common knowledge; what I've read most is that he's the quintessential "change of scenery" candidate.

18 seamus   ~  Dec 9, 2015 2:17 pm

[16] Oh he's that Castro. I sort of blur players on other teams. I don't like that background.

19 Dimelo   ~  Dec 9, 2015 4:25 pm

[17] Cashman probably helped him bury the bodies. :-)

20 Start Spreading the News   ~  Dec 9, 2015 6:32 pm

[16] What kind of trouble could that guy get into in NYC? Especially with the New York Media ready to report on every misstep...

Not a fan of the move. He seems like an Alfonso Soriano without the power and defense. He strikes out a lot, hits into a lot of double plays and doesn't walk.

21 Start Spreading the News   ~  Dec 9, 2015 6:33 pm

And we lose Adam Warren who would serviceably fill in when a starter goes down which in this team is every other day...

Not that money matters, but Warren is only making about 500K a year.

22 Chyll Will   ~  Dec 9, 2015 7:25 pm

I'm guessing Miller stays now... unless the Yankees wanna just flip the script on everybody.

[21] Arb eligible. Probably get a bump to about 1.5 this year.
