The Old Man….Is Down the Road

A Rod pop up

Is this the end of the line for Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees? M’eh, could be…

Yeah, and the Mets thumped the Yanks last night, 7-1.

Let him get to 700 home runs. Then hopefully he'll realize that retirement looks better than getting released. He seems like a savvy businessman, so it's not like he would need next year's $20 million to live off of.

Maybe have an agreement that the organization will donate the $20 million to charity -- it would no longer count towards the luxury tax.

Convert the final year of the playing contract to a personal services deal and let him do the Reggie gadfly thing for the next 10 years at $2M per.

I don't know all the nuanced MLBPA/CBA issues that would likely gum that up. But getting the money has to appeal to Alex more than walking away from the contract... and having the money go to the (former) player rather than having it leave town as a donation has to go down easier with the union. Right?

(2) excellent idea. Roving batting coach too

Alex doesn't play much and when he does he does not contribute. He has been a top player, although tainted by scandal, in his career. He has made plenty of money and stands to make more even if he does not step on the field. Why any of us should care about this is beyond me?

[2] I highly doubt Alex or the union would do any sort of favor for the Yanks. It's a great idea, so why not spoil it so no precedents are established? At any rate, I doubt the Yanks want to tie themselves to Alex for yet another ten years in any way, no matter how humbled he's been the last couple of years. Of course if he did, then it wouldn't be hard to see him being a roving instructor in their system for several years with Reggie as his mentor, but that's basically a Lindsay Anderson-type "If..."

[4] Good points for those of us who are not too young to remember him in his glory days in Seattle or life before the Steroids Scandal Era. But there are a lot of kids who idolize him regardless because they don't have those experiences or are aware of them at any rate.

[6} I'm a senior citizen. The last player I took personal was Mickey Mantle. He has been a top player. He seems like a nice fellow but all of us have an expiration date. Time to move on.
