"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

If This is It

Goodness, what a beating. Funny how the game speeds up in October and it got ahead of Boone last night in the 4th, leaving Severino in too long, replacing him with Lance Lynn, oh, man, was got ugly to the tune of the worst playoff loss in team history, 16-1. Suck on that, Bronx Bummers.

Dag.

And so the Yanks turn their eyes to the Big Fella, ol’ C.C. to save their season tonight. C’mon guys, nobody likes watching a rival celebrate on your own turn. Find a way to get it done. At least don’t go down easy. Make ’em earn it.

Never mind the inevitable:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

Boone-y.

Yeesh.

Those who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them, I suppose.

What a horror show of an inning from him.

Given how little we managed against Eovaldi, I'm not confident we would have come back from even 3-0 down ... but dammit, give the team a chance.

2 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 5:34 pm

I'll also say ... I'm pessimistic about tonight.

PROVE ME WRONG, GENTLEMEN!

3 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 6:06 pm

I’m hoping for four good innings from CC, then get him out of there

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 6:13 pm

1 hour to go.

5 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 6:17 pm

don't understand how Angel H. will be behind the plate tonight. MLB has no guts.

6 mhoward120   ~  Oct 9, 2018 6:57 pm

Jump remember what happened with these teams the last time there was a lopsided post -season game.

7 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:09 pm

Well, here we go.

8 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:09 pm

Ugh. The uneasiness in me is not pleasant. Go Yankees! Go Big Fella!

9 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:10 pm

The CC special!

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:12 pm

I'm worried about CC against this lineup..danger, danger..

11 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:15 pm

Stupid shift

12 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:17 pm

I wonder if Mo was around still if we’d see the Mo shift I always wanted. Basically shallow outfielders. When he was on, that broken bat blooper was the biggest issue it seemed.

13 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:17 pm

Go CC!

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:17 pm

JFC!!!!

15 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:17 pm

Stupid walk

16 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:18 pm

Bust 'em in.

17 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:18 pm

Phew

18 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:18 pm

Phew, Brett

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:19 pm

and ... exhale.

pisses me off that CC went from 8 pitches to 20 to get that final out.

20 mhoward120   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:19 pm

Kinda like last night’s first.

21 BobbyB   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:20 pm

I have way more confidence in CC than Severino.

22 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:20 pm

[20] except last night a bunch of balls hit hard even when outs. Only one ball in this inning barely passed 100 mph. And one over 90.

23 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:21 pm

Btw last night, first inning, 2 of 3 balls over 100 mph.

24 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:25 pm

That was a horrid at bat Didi.

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:25 pm

8 fucking pitches for Porcello???

26 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:26 pm

Porcello's first pitch strikes look juicy.

27 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:34 pm

Nice pitch, CC!

28 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:35 pm

Let's give CC some support

29 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:35 pm

[27] Ohayo, Iyasu.

Wonder if CC can get through one more inning, then get it to the pen..

30 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:36 pm

Morning/Evening Guys, Let's work some counts, please.

31 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:36 pm

[30] Boat, win or lose I'm breaking my healthy diet and getting some slices for lunch.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:37 pm

[29] That's too soon if can be avoided.

Thank's to Boone-y, we're likely down Green and Holder tonight. Assuming he stays on pace, I think he goes at least 4.

Fingers crossed.

33 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:38 pm

Not good.

34 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:38 pm

Good thing they're making him work.

Oh, wait.

35 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:38 pm

Why can't Luke take a pitch?

36 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:39 pm

A hit!

37 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:39 pm

There we go

38 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:40 pm

[29] Hi Jazz!

Launch one, Gary.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:41 pm

Good ol' Gary, rolling over low and outside ... yet AGAIN.

40 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:43 pm

[31] Sounds good. Sounds healthy enough. I hope they are victory slices. Wish I could join you, but I probably won't hit central until 14:00. Don't tell my boss.

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:44 pm

Great start, CC.

Just wonderful.

42 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:44 pm

Aw jeez, HBP

43 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:48 pm

44 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:48 pm

Another POS hit

45 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:48 pm

C'MON ... THE FUCKING DINK SHOT.

FUCK.

46 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:49 pm

I'm beginning to think luck isn't on our side this series.

47 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:49 pm

[40] They make game 5 on friday then come to O'sando and we'll slice it up.

48 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:49 pm

Problem now is that CC can't get a k when he needs one

49 BobbyB   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:49 pm

He’s a little high in the zone so far.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:49 pm

motherfucker

51 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:50 pm

Did it Darling? Did the hbp hurt the Yankees? Douche bag.

52 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:52 pm

[51] I really like Darling on the Mets games, why is he such a dbag on TBS..odd.

53 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:53 pm

Is there really no one warming in the pen??

54 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:53 pm

Good job, CC!

57 BobbyB   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:54 pm

Sanchez you suck

58 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:54 pm

Sanchez really lazed on that one

59 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:54 pm

Obligatory pb by Sanchez, even if they call it a WP.

Nune5. Even Nune5.

67 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:57 pm

Boone leaving the pitcher too long..... Again.

68 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:58 pm

Runs now, please.

69 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:58 pm

They have more 2 out hits with risp this series than the Yankees all freaking season. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

70 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:58 pm

Bullpen time

71 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:58 pm

Boone needs to go. #1 job of manager is to put the players in position to win. He can't seem to do that.

72 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:58 pm

Only so much you can do when your SP can't make it 4 innings and your bats can muster more than 1 run a game.

Just pathetic.

73 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 7:59 pm

[72] True..but still. Can't change the whole roster. Boone's niceguyness enough to cover his lack of game awareness?

74 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:02 pm

Frustrating.

75 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:03 pm

I always thought it was a curious hire. He really seems clueless at times.

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:03 pm

Britton?

Well, ok, I guess.

77 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:04 pm

[72] Boone has some responsibility there with his white flags in games. There is no way that doesn’t affect the team at the plate

78 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:05 pm

White flags?

Explain please ...

79 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:05 pm

[75] he seemed clueless when he was in the booth.

80 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:06 pm

[78] down by 2 runs so let’s put in AJ Cole. He has a certain set of “we’re behind” relievers. When he plays to win it’s Betances, not Lynn.

81 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:06 pm

If you're going to go the ex-player with no experience route, why not baseball nerd A-Rod?

82 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:06 pm

Wow, way to make Porcello work there guys!

Bravo!

83 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:07 pm

Pathetic offense

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:07 pm

[80] Eh, that wasn't a white flag. That was just stupidity coupled with an inability to adjust on the fly.

85 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:07 pm

Last night annoyed me because of how much he quit on the game. Players actually appreciate when their manager tries to save face - even if statistically meaningless.

86 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:08 pm

Besides, Lynn was probably the right choice for the 4th.

TO START THE INNING, BOONE-Y YOU IDIOT.

87 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:10 pm

Double fuck

88 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:10 pm

Yeah, it's that kind of night.

All skill is in vain when an angel pees down the barrel of your gun.

89 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:11 pm

Don't blame Boone.... Too much.... I think he is listening to the analytics guys in the front office a bit much. They did win 100. Think another manager would have beaten the Sawks?

And Britton would be better elsewhere.

90 rob_smith_51   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:13 pm

Red Sox look very comfortable at the plate.

91 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:14 pm

So how long does a "true fan" stick with this mess. Two more Judge at-bats.

92 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:14 pm

yessinDD

93 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:17 pm

[89] I truly doubt it was the "analytics guys" that told him how to shit the bed in the 4th inning last night ...

94 iyasu   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:18 pm

Yanks need to crush the fastballs early in the count.

95 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:19 pm

DiDi!

96 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:19 pm

I'll say this ... unlike our starters, Eovaldi and Porcello have pitched very, VERY well in these last 2 games.

106 Springdeeds   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:26 pm

Hi everyone. Woke up a bit late so just tuning in to the radio broadcast... don't wanna watch this one yet.

Really frustrating stuff. The Starting Pitchers are certainly to blame, as are certain bats that haven't done anything all series, but Boone has actively taken us out of situations that might allow us to stay in games. Pretty rough. Completely outclassed by Cora!

107 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:27 pm

[105] Ha!

Stanton = Can'ton

Ok i’ll Take that

112 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:35 pm

[106] Cora is so chill. He makes Boone look like a Nervous Nelly.

113 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:36 pm

[112] Heard this AM on a podcast that he spent all last year as bench coach on the Astros. Valuable experience on a championship team.

114 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:36 pm

Bottom 5th ... 41 pitches for Porcello.

We're screwed.

115 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 8:38 pm

177 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:03 pm

Yeah, the starting pitching might have been garbage, but 2 runs scored in 2 games was never going to get it done.

178 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:05 pm

Ah, Feck it. 100 wins, Gleyber And Candojar arrived, Judge still a beast, Hicks reaching his peak. Pick up another starter and next year looks good.

Go Brew Crew!

179 BobbyB   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:07 pm

I’m outta here until next spring. No way I watch Sawks celebrate on hallowed ground. Alex, thanks for being a great host. Ladies and gents, it’s been a slice. Hope you all have a great year.

180 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:09 pm

Yup.... 2019 was always the year. We have had an amazing 2 year 'rebuild'. The last Yankee game of the year is always depressing... unless it's a WS Win. Best to all the Banterers here.

181 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:11 pm

Last time, into the fray....

182 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:12 pm

First live pitch I saw was that K. Like I said, I’ll be home just in time to watch us go down feebly in the 9th. Will turn it off immediately....

183 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:14 pm

Yep i’ll Insta pause. Once we lose.

184 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:15 pm

Hate the beard. HATE the stoopid setup. Sooo dumb

185 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:15 pm

I hate chicken wing Kimberl. If he does that in my Aikido dojo he’d be flat on his face

186 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:15 pm

Ball 4!

Still alive!

187 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:15 pm

I think it works because hitters are busy laughing

188 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:16 pm

I’ll take a 4-pitch leadoff walk. Can Didi hit a 5-run homer here?

189 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:17 pm

I hope that landing didn’t hurt his bad ankle

190 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:17 pm

Why swing at that????????

191 rbj   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:18 pm

Base hit!

192 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:18 pm

Single!

Still alive!!

193 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:18 pm

Giving me false hope

194 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:18 pm

Not only will I take that single, I will very much accept a 3-run game tying homer from Stanton

195 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:19 pm

Sorry feeling too pessimistic right now

196 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:19 pm

My nerves can't take this..could we possibly get a three-tun tater??

197 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:19 pm

Keep the line moving.

198 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:19 pm

This would be a good tine to become a True Yankee, Stanton ...

199 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:20 pm

Awful swing

200 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:20 pm

I hope Stanton is watching this at-bat

210 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:24 pm

Stanton is the LAST guy I want up in a critical AB.

211 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:25 pm

Walkoff granny, thank you please!

212 rob_smith_51   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:25 pm

213 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:25 pm

214 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:25 pm

Ooh damn. Take one for the team!

217 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:26 pm

Sigh.

Motherfuckers.

See you in the Spring.

238 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:35 pm

Love how they refused to fold. Out at first

Friends, a good year. Let's look to 2019. Another starter, Some better corner D. A great start to a future with Judge, Sanchez, DD, and the kids. Hopeful off season, hopeful next year.

239 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:36 pm

Well, they made it interesting. Got my money's worth.

240 Ara Just Fair   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:36 pm

Motherfucker. Cheers y'all. It's. been quite the season. Thank to Alex and the gang. And fuck off, red sox.

241 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:36 pm

Ok i’m glad they went down fighting but got my hopes up for naught. Oh well. Hopefully this is a learning experience for next year. I

242 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:36 pm

[238] Second that!

Stanton's AB though..he's going to have a long winter. Let's hope it's just first year Yankee jitters.

お疲れ様でした、Banterites! See some of you for the ALCS games am sure.

243 seamus   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:37 pm

Our team is very young. The future is good.

244 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:38 pm

[238] Well said. We have a lot to look forward to. See y'all next year.

245 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 9, 2018 10:39 pm

[242] Yeah, that was just awful.

Even if those weren't sliders in the dirt, he wasn't going to do shit if he made contact.

I just don't get how guys keep swinging at that shit.

Either it's a slider you won't touch ... or a fastball you can't do ANYTHING with.

246 iyasu   ~  Oct 10, 2018 8:18 am

[81] We all know the reasons, but screw them. I vote for A-Rod for manager.

247 Greg G   ~  Oct 10, 2018 11:22 am

Great season for the Yanks but they just came up short.

It will be tough to replicate this bullpen. Britton wasn't exactly lights out, but he was still really good.

I hope they get Keuchel next year, but he might sign with a team that allows beards instead?

Sorry to think that CC's last game as a Yank came in a loss, but I think the big fella is pretty much done. The Yanks should try to trade Bam Bam Voight and Andujar for some top line starters. If they trade Bird they would be trading while his stock is low. We need some patient hitters that are not all or nothing types. Then they can sign Machado, if they can back load his cash to stay under the salary cap. Although, if it is reset, maybe that is not a concern?

Stanton's final AB was the season in a microcosm. The last 2 nights, no dingers and 2 losses. While it was nice to dream of Stanton and Judge as the modern day Mantle and Maris. I think the recipe is basically two guys with similar games but Judge is getting better than all or nothing Mr. K.

248 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 10, 2018 9:56 pm

Would've Could've Should've...

Boone is gonna have to sit down and explain some of his thought processes with upper management; he did some very bad things during crunch time. Cora out-coached him, but not surprising since Cora has some actual coaching experience with a champion team to boot. Boone has... a way with young players? What the hell is he gonna do with some vets from champion teams that realize he keeps missing his cues at important moments? Feh,

But it's not all him, not at all. The best players missed their cues as well. I'll collect my thoughts and discuss another time, but there definitely has to be some changes here and there beyond just acquiring better players on paper. Fundamentally, this was a really talented and athletic, yet inconsistent and largely inexperienced team, and it showed when their best player was down. Only two guys with championship experience to guide 24+ to and through their first or second real post-season is asking a whole lot, and I guess we saw the answer. I'll be interested in seeing what moves are made beyond the roster. Boone needs better help if he's going to maintain and grow.

249 thelarmis   ~  Oct 12, 2018 12:09 pm

Shit. Didi’s having Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow...

250 Greg G   ~  Oct 12, 2018 12:36 pm

Paging Manny Machado. Please answer the pinstriped courtesy phone.

251 Hank Waddles   ~  Oct 12, 2018 2:39 pm

This was also my first thought when my phone buzzed with the news. Didi is one of my favorites, and I was already beginning to worry that they might not bring him back after 2019. Now? I'd much prefer they slide Gleyber over to short and put someone else -- not Torreyes -- at second. Maybe Walker full time? If they're going to spend big money, spend it on pitching.

252 rbj   ~  Oct 12, 2018 6:35 pm

That sucks about Didi.

Meanwhile Eli is so bad it was the topic of discussion for the first half hour of the local sports talk show here in Toledo.

253 rbj   ~  Oct 12, 2018 7:13 pm

And go Brewers (and Astros)

254 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 13, 2018 12:08 pm

[253] There are exactly and only two CIAs I will root for: The Culinary Institute of America, and the Central Inter-league Association (which this WS will likely be).
