"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Have Bat, Will Travel

Yanks have been a little of this, little of that so far. Gary Sanchez looks like a bum on the bases two straight games then hits three home runs. Guys are hurt, young guys are stepping in—lots of new faces.

They are down in Houston for three games starting tonight, so let’s see what they’ve got against Verlander and the Fromage Factory. The first real test of the year if you don’t count all these damn injuries.

Should be fun.

Never mind the bumps and bruises:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

Bad news about Sevi. Think the yanks will go after Keushel?

2 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:26 pm

Nice try gardi

3 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:35 pm

Verlander is just effing tough.

4 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:36 pm

[3] Nasty. But what exactly is Greg Bird doing in the majors at this point? He’s shown zero ability to stay on the field and when he does play, he can’t hit.

5 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:36 pm

[1] Oh no...

6 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:37 pm

OMG, the commercials on Texas radio couldn’t be more ‘Texas’. BBQ sauce, then a Baptist pastor promoting his church..

7 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:37 pm

I Fucking hate watching verlander pitch against the Yankees. It must have something to do with me having as much chance hitting him from my couch.

8 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:53 pm

Like the hit and run

9 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:58 pm

A RBI with risp!

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 6:59 pm

Time for eh Kraken to attack!

11 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:00 pm

Not good enough.

12 rob_smith_51   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:00 pm

Swinging at the first pitch didn't work very well.

13 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:12 pm

Bird has lost what ever he had. So sad.

14 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:34 pm

All rise

15 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:41 pm

Missed the Judge tater..
Tanaka looking good outside the obligatory homer?

16 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:52 pm

Go Big Red

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:53 pm

Frasier swinging a hot bat, wonder how they find him playing time when Stanton gets back. Gardner hits the bench?

18 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 7:53 pm

Atta boy, Clint!

19 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:10 pm

Tanaka-San,

20 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:15 pm

6 innings strong. The Yankee CG. Now lets hope that next 3 pitchers that enter this game needlessly have their stuff today.

21 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:26 pm

[20] Totally, 78 pitches for Tanaka, he could easily go one more.

22 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:27 pm

Pooh. In the boys

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:34 pm

[22] Someone got it in the family jewels?

C'mon Zach, no more baserunners please!

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:35 pm

Good work, Zach.

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:37 pm

Robinson Chirinos?? Who TF is that?? My commute this morning has me salty as hell and Britton isn't helping..still don't get singing him instead of D-Rob at that money.

26 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:37 pm

Where is DB when we need him?

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:38 pm

Can’t beat verlander. Afuckinggain!

28 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:38 pm

Not lost yet. We could hit 5 more homers to erase Boone's daily f'ups.

29 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:41 pm

OK for the big O

30 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:45 pm

[29] Ottavino seems real good, but there's only one 'Big O': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI_zG2eWGE4

31 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:46 pm

Wtf is Bird doing on the roster?

32 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:50 pm

(30) Andd I thought you meant Oscar Robinson

33 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:54 pm

[32] Ooh Yeah, tie between him and Otis for sure.
[31] Not sure he will be much longer..

34 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:54 pm

What a dandy of a game. This is like playoff baseball.

35 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:56 pm

Looking at Otavino's "0," I wonder if they will ever allow ball players to go to decimals. Then we could get "2.1".

36 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 8:59 pm

That sucks

37 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:00 pm

They are going to lose this game because Britton walked the 8 hitter and then gave up a 2 out, 2 run game tying double to the fucking 9 hitter allowing this catastrophe of an inning.

38 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:02 pm

They are going to lose because Boone happened. Also, it would be nice if Greg "What does he do again?" Bird would act alive once in a while

39 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:06 pm

Well, it's Judgement time.

40 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:08 pm

[35] Need Felix Pie back in the majors, he could go 3.4...

41 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:09 pm

Tanaka had 30 CGs in the last three seasons before coming to NY. He has 6 since. Reminds me of that scene in Trading Places. "This is a Rouchefoucauld. The thinnest water-resistant watch in the world. This is *the* sports watch of the '80s... But in Philadelphia it is worth $50 bucks"

42 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:10 pm

This could have been a nice win. Instead it's just a kick in the nuts.

43 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:11 pm

Blech

44 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 8, 2019 9:14 pm

Terrible loss..oh well.
[41] Wasn't that pawn shop guy played by Bo Diddley?!

45 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 10:43 pm

[44] Yeah, fitting since we got diddly squat out from this game.

46 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 8, 2019 10:44 pm

I'm not mad about that loss.

Got the better of Verlander. Hung tough against one of the best teams in baseball. Great performance by Tanaka. How many times is the BP gonna blow a game like that this year? Not many, I wager.

47 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 8, 2019 10:45 pm

[42] Ouch. Gary is tough. Glad he's a father already.

48 yankintexas   ~  Apr 8, 2019 11:10 pm

[17] As long as Frasier continues his Bryce Harper impersonation, then yeah Gardy should sit. Cashman would look like a genius for passing on Harper. One can only hope that's how it plays out because he'll be in the running for NL MVP along with Yelich and Bellinger. Amazing that two of those three guys were available but wasn't even on our radar.

49 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 12:11 am

[48] Sit or not, Gardy should not be batting lead-off, while the best all-around hitter on the team, not named Judge, languishes in the lower 3rd of the order (Gleyber).

50 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:13 pm

Ok, let’s have a win tonight

51 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:17 pm

Luuuuke!!!

52 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:23 pm

So it's pronounced Low why zig a.emphasis on why. He's still lasagna to me, but if he can pitch as good as lasagna tastes, I'll learn how to say it.

53 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:26 pm

Nice, Lasagna

54 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:26 pm

pretty impressive start.

55 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:33 pm

Johnny Lasanga is pitching like a stud. And he looks like a pop idol.

56 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:35 pm

Frazier goes down!

57 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:40 pm

Yeah, Romine is a much better defensive catch....[cough]

58 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:44 pm

The Astros are starting to annoy me.

59 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:47 pm

This is gonna be a bullpen game.

60 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:48 pm

Phew!

61 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:54 pm

Jesus Fucking Christ, Brett!

62 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:55 pm

Jesus Fucking Christ!

63 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 7:56 pm

[61] Great (foul) minds?

64 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:01 pm

Gardy should not be batting leadoff

65 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:05 pm

Yup.

66 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:06 pm

Altuve is becoming the Pedroia of the Astros

67 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:09 pm

Hardy as the second lead off man. I.e., ninth.

68 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:11 pm

So ESPN is losing money that they can only afford these guys?

69 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:13 pm

I hate the astros.

70 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:14 pm

Huh, too many guys covering the base

71 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:14 pm

wtf?

72 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:18 pm

Seems like we have the Bad News Yankees today.

And Kay is making excuses for Romine. They really stick to the plot at YES.

73 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:19 pm

Yikes!

74 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:19 pm

Romine is looking to the dugout for pitch calls. wonder who is calling?

75 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:25 pm

hnnnmmm. just got a spam call from Armenia

76 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:25 pm

maybe Armenians are calling pitches for the yanks

77 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:28 pm

Just caught up.

Gritner really shat the bed on that bunt and then the Terror Tot did what the Terror Tot does on crap fastballs.

Blech.

78 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:29 pm

Oh joy, Tarpley, this could be waving the white flag.

79 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:29 pm

[78] was just thinking the same thing.

80 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:35 pm

Gio Gonzales. .. really?

81 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:37 pm

I may be judging too quickly, but this Upshulla does not look like a ML hitter.

82 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:51 pm

Well Cessa started slow but wriggled out of it.

83 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:53 pm

It's amazing that the Yanks are still in this one.

84 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:58 pm

That was not adroit.

85 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 8:58 pm

Nice at bat from Judge

86 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:00 pm

Tied, untied!

89 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:12 pm

Gardy is not having a good game.

90 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:13 pm

Um, Brett, git yer head in the game

91 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:17 pm

The MLB analysts commercials are hilarious. Well done, whoever the agency is. I wish I had that gig.

92 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:19 pm

93 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:19 pm

Nine more outs.

94 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:31 pm

Did they even introduce Holder?

I hate these two clowns.

95 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:32 pm

Never mind, they must have last inning and I missed it.

96 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:32 pm

Still hate these two clowns, though

97 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:35 pm

Frazier is not having a good game either. [sigh]

98 rbj   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:35 pm

The ESPN crew of Sciambi and Ross? Yeah. The audio stinks too.

Yeesh. Sloppy game.

Gotta go walk the dog and go to bed. Night all.

104 seamus   ~  Apr 9, 2019 9:45 pm

112 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:08 pm

Can't beat the fucking astros. Again. And the little League world series is full of great catches. Sort if like the 2 Crazier botched tonight. Sigh.

113 seamus   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:13 pm

This has to be Romine’s worst game fielding

114 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:23 pm

115 seamus   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:27 pm

Alas. Another night we might catch the ball...

116 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:38 pm

[113] He's always been a below-average fielding catcher. He just has good PR.

117 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 9, 2019 10:40 pm

I'm going to enjoy the season, but this is not a World Series team and not definitely not a World Series manager.

118 yankintexas   ~  Apr 9, 2019 11:21 pm

[117] And not a WS GM or WS trust fund owner to be found either. But hey, they’ll keep fans entertained all year when they pad their stats / homers in non-competitive blowouts. I can’t wait for the Sox series, we’ll fix their woes.

119 Greg G   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:40 am

Frustrating 2 games. Both games were winnable, but the Yanks just seemed to take the foot off the pedal.

Frazier may still be tentative on balls that he has to dive for due to his concussion last year because it made the symptoms come back. He has to restrain his emotions though and not delay being part of the play after making a mistake.

Gardner not running seemed like a rookie mistake. I know you are trying to sell foul ball but he ruined a potential rally there.

Loaisiga started hot striking out the side but wasn't helped by the D. He has good stuff and deserved a better outcome.

This all or nothing offense isn't going to work when they are up against better pitchers. Just loading up to hit bombs, might work against the Os but I would love to see more small ball.

Sanchez looks like he is finally finding his way back.

Boone isn't pushing the right buttons on the bullpen right now, but I think part of that is finding what these guys can do. Britton might not be suited for his role. I saw that last year too. Maybe he needs the adrenaline of closing.

The Yanks breathed new life into the stros who were also stuck around .500. It sucks because even with a team decimated with injuries these Yanks are still loaded with talent.

Now Severino may be out for much longer than anticipated, and who knows what we get if and when he gets into games this year.

Perhaps that brought back Gardner for veteran leadership and I know they must be missing CC in that regard too. I hear that Judge is stepping in as a leader, but someone needs to give them a swift kick in the ass.

120 yankintexas   ~  Apr 10, 2019 2:26 pm

That swift kick in the ass hasn't been part of the Yankees makeup ever since George left, unless you count Levine's idiot comments towards DB awhile back. If we had any of that you would have saw it last year after any of those half a dozen 14/16 run games we lost by against the Sox. I feel this team just a softball team disguised as an MLB team. Yeah, talent is there, just not the mentality and that's because of Cashman and Hal more than anything else, IMO.

121 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2019 3:35 pm

coff Dallas Keuchel coff. Looks like Sevy at the ASB return. At best.

122 yankintexas   ~  Apr 10, 2019 4:50 pm

Cashman's thinking:
CC is back so DG / Lasagna will continue to cover for Severino. Hopefully, Pedro or someone outside the organization can provide us with some more free coaching advice that way we can keep justifying our Weekend at Bernie's pitching coach's existence.

123 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2019 6:42 pm

Good thing Booney left Paxton in to start the 5th and face Altuve already having thrown 91 pitches in 4 innings.

Booney is SMRT smart.

150 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 8:24 pm

What he does against the Yankees bugs me, but I marvel at him as a ballplayer, all 4 of his homers against us were BOMBS.

I could see Judge cranking balls like that with regularity, but the dude's like 5'7''

160 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 8:43 pm

At this rate, that portion of the season is going to last a hell of a long time.

Maybe Mike Axisa over at RAB knew what he was doing when he decided to pull the cord ...

Death of a thousand cuts. I had to turn it off.

I was wondering why we had the "B" line up tonight, then I heard Sanchez is hurt again. Jay-sus. After Frazier, there's no one who can hit the GD ball.

When the hell is Stanton due back? I thought it was a minor thing.

162 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 10, 2019 8:51 pm

[160] Yes! I was just thinking the same thing about RAB.

163 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2019 8:55 pm

[161] The lineup is dreadful now. Bird, Romine and Wade are just zeros, and I worry Voit's magic may have run out too.

Gary with a tight calf? Considering the shot he took the other night just say bruised balls

165 yankintexas   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:11 pm

Watching hockey instead of this shit show. It appears we've already broken Paxton. Meanwhile Sonny Gray's ERA over 3 runs less. Gotta love this management.

166 rbj   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:14 pm

Yeah, I’m out of here too. Night all.

167 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:20 pm

You know what I hate, really hate, even more than the way this series has gone???

Commercials that somehow override the mute I've selected on the MLB.tv player and suddenly start blaring at you and at really fucking loud volume.

I'm looking at you, Lexus.

168 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:27 pm

HA!

A Voit Volt!!

I shall be the only one left to testify to this comeback!!!

169 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:34 pm

Tying run is at the plate, nobody out!

170 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:36 pm

[168] I'm back, ready for the comeback of the year!

171 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:39 pm

No PH for Romine here??

172 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:43 pm

Ah of course, Gary can't catch with his 'leg' injury.
If Boone hadn't PH for Wade though that would have been a fireable offense..

173 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:52 pm

Tuned back in just in time dor some stellar 8th inning bp work.

174 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:55 pm

So much for that.

And now the bullpen has coughed up a run ... again.

Remember when that was our strength???

175 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:56 pm

Sorry, had it on pause while I started the rice for dinner, but the scoreline at the bottom of the screen is independent of the action onscreen, so I knew Gary failed and the bullpen failed the moment I sat down.

Blech.

176 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 9:57 pm

This bullpen needs a good decimation, Roman legion style.

177 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:01 pm

What a fucking clown show.

178 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:02 pm

The Houston house of horrors. Fucking Bollocks!

179 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:02 pm

Spoke too soon, thanks Gurriel!

180 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:02 pm

Really really need Dellin back..
I'm out, hope can check in later to see a comeback win!

181 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 10, 2019 10:13 pm

Nope.

Sad trombone.

182 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 11, 2019 12:33 am

Rock bottom?

183 Greg G   ~  Apr 11, 2019 11:02 am

Awful. The Yanks fought hard and had a chance to win all 3 games. To get swept like that is demoralizing.

Gardner looked like Frazier from the other night. Misplayed 2 balls.

Just as the Yanks make a game of it, the bullpen craps itself. Britton got thru his inning but again looks uneasy. He wasn't helped by the D as Gleyber airmailed to first and was never in a position to get that out with a perfect throw.

So the Yanks and Stros match up while both are hovering around .500 and the Yanks help the Astros take off.

Ugh!!! We need another series against the Os to wash this taste out of my mouth.
