"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Pal Joey

It’s not been an easy time of it for Joey Gallo in New York. But every time I read something about him he seems to be thoughtful and self-aware and it makes me like him. And because I like him I’ve taken no joy in his failures as a Yankee. I don’t think his failure has anything to do with a lack of effort and while I know that doesn’t cut it when it comes to professional sports and winning championships and fan appreciation, it does count for something as a professional. And Joey Gallo has acted like a professional in New York. And that’s not nothing. Especially in the face of bombing. I wish him luck no matter where he winds up—so long as it’s not with the Red Sox.

Alex, II one hundred percent agree.

There have been boatloads of players not fit for NY (Pavano, Vazquez, Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown) that were easy to hate for their relative failings, but Gallo is of a different order entirely. Maybe we’re more sensitive to mental health these days, or whatever, but his shortcomings in the Bronx don’t seem like a character deficiency like prior dudes. He comes across as a good person and it’d be sad for a season in the BX to derail his career.

I hope they are able to move him AND I hope he hits 15 homers down the stretch and gets back to 120 OPS+ next year in a new city. Just not for Boston or Houston.

2 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 6:19 pm

Ya.
I really feel the frustration when the camera follows him after an at bat. It's got to be psychologically devastating, and although I don't want to see him bat for the Yankees anymore, I admire him for sticking with it and not cracking up or anything.

3 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:02 pm

Forty, forte.

4 rbj   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:09 pm

Yay, Judge!

5 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:30 pm

Uh oh.
He's safe.

6 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:30 pm

Yeah not close.

7 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:33 pm

Good call, blue. Oi.

8 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:34 pm

Goddam it.

9 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:34 pm

Defense let us down. Let Cole down.

10 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:35 pm

Jesus Christ.

11 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:36 pm

Well that was good hitting, but man.
I feel like this is largely self-inflicted.

12 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:36 pm

Well, that was unexpected.

13 mhoward120   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:37 pm

Sorry, but Cole keeps proving that he is neither elite nor even reliable.

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:38 pm

Cole loves his fastball.

15 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:47 pm

Don’t look now, but four hits in 14 innings for the Yanks.

16 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:48 pm

[13] He's not having a great year. But he is an elite pitcher, I think.

17 rbj   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:49 pm

Oy

18 knuckles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:50 pm

Watching the Yankees with my girls and also trying to explain Field of Dreams.
so daughter the younger points at the tv and says “so these guys are basically dead right now?”

19 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:56 pm

The athletics are the only team with a worse record than the royals and Cole managed to turn a 3-0 lead into a 5-3 deficit. Unbelievable.

20 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 7:57 pm

[19] He had plenty of help though.

21 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:03 pm

I’d offer that Chapman’s appearance here is more important than Cole’s.

22 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:08 pm

[21] Interesting.
For sure it's a bright spot, anyway.

23 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:09 pm

[21] Just imagine if we can see more of that from Chapman. So here’s the question — do the Yankees believe what they’ve seen these last couple outings?

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:10 pm

My last comment at 23 is in moderation. Hmmmmmmm.....

25 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:15 pm

I mean, I think they believe it... to a degree.
Or anyway, *I* believe it do a degree!

26 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:20 pm

Yikes.
I feel like we have to score two here, because the rain is gonna end the game.

27 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:20 pm

Nope.

28 knuckles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:26 pm

Kinda felt like Cole was looking ahead to this becoming an official game and let things get away from him. Brain fart and defensive lapse equals a lost lead.

29 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 8:26 pm

Sad sax.

30 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:08 pm

So I was just about to predict a Donaldson double play. Nice of the Royals to botch it.

31 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:13 pm

And I was gonna say, "It would be really good to have Carp to ph here rather than using him with two out and nobody on."
And I'm still gonna say it.

32 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:13 pm

This is not a rally for the memory books, but I’ll take it. (But it looks like this fifth run is coming off the board.)

33 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:14 pm

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Why did Hicks tell Boone to challenge what he thought was a no-call???
Did he actually think he was hit??

34 rob_smith_51   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:16 pm

As good as a HBP

35 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:16 pm

Back on the board.

36 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:16 pm

Free runs.
Or, as Michael just said, "NOW the game is scored! Again!"

37 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:18 pm

IKF!

38 rob_smith_51   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:19 pm

Keep the line moving!

39 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:21 pm

Four runs without a ball hit more than 150 feet. Bronx Bombers, indeed.

40 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:26 pm

ESPN reporting the MARINERS are getting Castillo. Kind of stunning.

41 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:27 pm

Oh. My.

42 RIYank   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:27 pm

Well, of course he did.
Of course he did.

43 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:29 pm

He did, and I wasn’t even surprised.

44 knuckles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:36 pm

Pay this man, or trade him for a decade of Soto. No in between

45 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:36 pm

Pay him and name him Captain. It couldn’t be more obvious.

46 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:44 pm

I’m watching the Kansas City feed, and they just dropped a pretty amazing stat. Judge is the first player in major league history to have nine multi-HR games in his team’s first 101 games.

47 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:53 pm

So Cole shit the bed again against a shit team. Duuuuuude....?

I just tuned in for the fireworks at the end. Seems like I made a good choice.

Hearts out to Joey Gallo. Perhaps Jeets will send him a fruit basket to somewhere far away from NYC.

48 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:53 pm

Note to Cashman: We still need pitching, pitching, pitching.

49 rbj   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:54 pm

Well that was unexpected.

50 rbj   ~  Jul 29, 2022 9:58 pm

Wait, Castillo to the Mariners?

51 RIYank   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:32 pm

Come on Hicksy! Let's put this away early!

52 RIYank   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:33 pm

Or that.
Dammit.

53 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:38 pm

Don’t give those runs back

54 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:44 pm

A friend stopped by last night right as they were putting the tarp down. It was 5-3. I completely forgot about the game until this a.m. Holy Cow.

55 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:44 pm

That’s it.

56 rob_smith_51   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:49 pm

Donaldson should hit towards the bottom of the lineup.

57 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:55 pm

200 for Judge!

59 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 30, 2022 1:57 pm

Huzzah! Amazing. I can't imagine the thrill of the fan casually snagging that Homer. Lol...

60 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 2:27 pm

We’re going to need more runs

61 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 2:36 pm

I’ll take those errors

62 RIYank   ~  Jul 30, 2022 2:53 pm

Good job, Nestor.

63 RIYank   ~  Jul 30, 2022 3:12 pm

Huh. Aroldis Chapman. Go figure.

64 RIYank   ~  Jul 30, 2022 3:22 pm

This run manufactured by IKF.

65 mhoward120   ~  Jul 30, 2022 4:00 pm

So is it too early or too much of a jinx to start the Magic Number countdown?
After last night’s game the MN was the number between 49 and 51.
Note: only 25% of Astros fans are capable of guessing the number.

66 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 4:05 pm

Definitely too early. Who knows what injuries might happen.

67 rob_smith_51   ~  Jul 30, 2022 4:05 pm

It seemed like the pitchers were figuring out Carpenter. He always works the pitcher.

68 mhoward120   ~  Jul 30, 2022 4:30 pm

7 squared

69 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 4:31 pm

Nice win.

70 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 30, 2022 7:47 pm

Look. I'm ridiculously excited about Aaron Judge, and I'm already planning on going to see all three games in Anaheim (Aug. 29,30,31) because there could be something historic happening, but I still say this: The most important thing that happened in Saturday's game was that Chapman pitched another clean inning.

I'm suddenly less concerned about the bullpen. There's Chapman (fingers crossed), but also Clarke Schmidt. And if Loaisiga gets it together? The weak spot could become a strength again.

71 rbj   ~  Jul 30, 2022 9:42 pm

Mariners finally beat the Ceatstros.

72 Hank Waddles   ~  Jul 30, 2022 10:39 pm

Red Sox sinking like a rock.

73 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 9:56 am

[72] Looks like they're ready to sell. I doubt JD Martinez is worth a lot of prospects, but they should get something.

74 mhoward120   ~  Jul 31, 2022 12:40 pm

Bill Russell was far and away the most significant basketball player ever. RIP.

75 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 1:06 pm

Indeed. RIP Bill.

76 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 1:27 pm

I wonder what Kyle's BA is with RISP.
Since as far as I know, BA can't be negative.

77 mhoward120   ~  Jul 31, 2022 1:46 pm

They really should change that non-error thing on an easy DP.

78 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 31, 2022 1:47 pm

The whole can't assume a double play bullshit to avoid giving errors is horribe.

79 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 1:55 pm

I feel like Benintendi should be leading off. Because so far, almost 100% of his offensive value is walking.

80 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:06 pm

uh oh

81 mhoward120   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:09 pm

21 starts and just 3 wins for Montgomery. How on earth can that be acceptable?

82 rob_smith_51   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:13 pm

Royals want their own 8 run inning.

83 rbj   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:27 pm

Right back in it.

84 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:28 pm

There, see? DJ isn't a lead-off hitter. You want him *after* Judge.

85 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:50 pm

I dunno, the loading-the-baaes thing didn't work out well for Montgomery. Let's not try it again.

86 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:52 pm

Whew.

87 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:57 pm

Amazing. So Benintendi has come to bat 14 times since joining the Yankees. Got on base half of those time. But only one hit (an infield single, you'll recall).

88 mhoward120   ~  Jul 31, 2022 2:57 pm

I’d prefer Sam Donaldson on this team.

89 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:31 pm

Yay!

90 rbj   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:31 pm

Rizzo!

91 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:38 pm

Man it must suck to rack a 4-0 lead and feel like you're probably gonna lose.
It must suck to pitch to these guys for a whole game. I think that's why Cole looks like the happiest player on the field when the Yankees mash, because he's thinking, "Hell yeah, I never have to pitch to them."

92 RIYank   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:41 pm

Oof.
Well, thin margin now. I wouldn't mind if Clay gets more than 3 outs.

93 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:42 pm

Dozier just gave me a Shelly Duncan flashback.

94 rbj   ~  Jul 31, 2022 3:53 pm

Hm Scott Effross.
Well, hard to spell, and I'd never heard of him, but his numbers look excellent!

106 mhoward120   ~  Aug 1, 2022 3:42 pm

I believe this is the first time an MLB team has a Trivino and a Trevino.

107 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 3:48 pm

[106] As a battery, no less!
Montas, that's good. And I don't think we gave up too much -- although I did like JP Sears.

108 rbj   ~  Aug 1, 2022 4:08 pm

I like the deals. Only problem is that Gallo wasn’t included.

109 mhoward120   ~  Aug 1, 2022 5:36 pm

YES is treating the acquisitions as if the messiahs have come.

110 Hank Waddles   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:04 pm

It’s a shame they weren’t able to get Castillo, but these guys will do, I suppose. I’m surprised to see Sevy hit the 60-day IL. Hopefully he comes back in September. Could be a big weapon out of the bullpen.

111 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:23 pm

114 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:31 pm

I disapprove of that wasteful homer.
A single would have cashed two out of the three runs, at a much lower cost.

115 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:34 pm

Yeah I see why we needed Montas. I didn't think Domingo German was gonna start again.

116 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:44 pm

Judge again.

119 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 6:58 pm

I missed a few days and now all the trade action. Yanks traded for Lee Trevino, isn't he like 90 years old, and a golfer??
Gallo is still on the team??
Never heard of the Cubs guy..are these really helpful moves? Maybe I'm just out of the loop on non-Yankee or Mets players this season..

120 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:08 pm

Douchelson can't buy a hit now..

121 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:11 pm

[119] The Yankees will trade no player before his time.
They're all helpful! It's just a question of whether the prospects they gave up turn out to be any good. Um, well, Trivino may not be any good -- there it's a question of whether they can make a correction or two, because his 'peripherals' are promising.

122 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:12 pm

wtf was that???

123 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:14 pm

I mean, that was a little league rundown. Not that it mattered, but still, it's offensive.

124 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:16 pm

[121] Thanks, reading about them now!
We're having a tough week here, the 'real feel' temp yesterday at 2pm was 109F. Rather exhausting, and even a 7am dog walk it's already baking..

125 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:27 pm

[124] Ooof.
Heatwave last week in the Northeast US, and more coming now. But, we're kinda used to it, not too bad. (Also I escaped to Maine for a bunch of the last one, which was perfect.)

126 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:27 pm

Okay I'm glad we got another Trivno! They're great, can't have too many of 'em.

127 rbj   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:32 pm

Trevino joins the party.

128 Springdeeds   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:35 pm

domingo german-- i believe in second chances for people, one hundred percent but was thinking about it in terms of the yankees-- the clean shave, protestant sort of ethic that has always permeated feels deeply hypocritical. i know this always happens in sports, but really hits harder when the yankees try to give off this sort of faux-classiness or something.

129 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 7:49 pm

[128] 100% agree. Second chances for Chapman, German, etc, but god-forbid someone grows their hair out!

130 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:02 pm

Yeah I basically agree too.
Ethics inside sports get all twisted up. Altuve will be booed for the rest of his career, but not Chapman or German. As if stealing signs was even remotely comparable to domestic violence.

131 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:04 pm

[130] I don't follow the NFL but saw this morning all over Twitter they are getting flamed for giving what seems a very minimal suspension to a QB with dozens of assault claims..As you say, you got to compartmentalize a lot as a sports fan.

132 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:21 pm

Chapman is still wearing long sleeves this summer??? Hope he's downing about 2 liters of Gatorade before taking the mound..

133 Hank Waddles   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:43 pm

This is my nightly reminder that Chapman’s looking better. (Yes, I read and agree with the above comments.) Anyway, twelve batters faced over his past four outings. One hit (tonight) erased on a double play.

134 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:50 pm

[131] Deshaun Watson, yeah that's particularly egregious, even for the NFL (which seems to me to be by far the worst league for violence against women). A six game suspension! Man, it's a good thing he didn't deflate any footballs -- then the commissioner would really have come down on him.

135 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 1, 2022 8:56 pm

139 rbj   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:01 pm

With Watson, the problem is a decline to prosecute, otherwise he’d be spending his career in prison.

Instead, according to the Babylon Bee, he is sentenced to playing for the Browns for three years.

I was part of a jury that convicted a guy of two of three DV charges, he got three years. And it turned out he’s a pimp. I hate pimps, it’s sexual assault.

140 RIYank   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:09 pm

lol
Not a good look when Wandy Peralta outruns you to first.

Well, GG.

141 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:09 pm

Wandy didn't want to trust throwing that to DJ. Smart move.

142 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:10 pm

[139] Reading about the Watson case now and..whoa.. And WTF is wrong with the Browns??
Btw, was asked once by a local here to explain the American jury system and they were completely baffled. 'But why would regular citizens have such responsibility? It's not correct, the authorities should decide guilt or innocence'. Very different view of courts here in the land of 95% conviction rates, though they have slowly introduced a jury system now for certain types of cases.

143 rbj   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:14 pm

Jazz, will have to reply later.

144 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:17 pm

145 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 1, 2022 9:25 pm

Ooh, Astros really stocking up in the trade market with Mancini and Vasquez..
