Over at the NY Post, Brian Costello writes about Phil Hughes’ innings limits:
“We are being smart about this guy,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We want him to be in our rotation for a long time. We believe he is a top-end starter and it’s our job to make sure we don’t overuse him.”
Hughes goes against Cliff Lee tonight at the Stadium. That should be a treat.

I really want Cliff Lee to be a Yankee next year. Via free agency. Is that going to happen? Or do they going to need to trade for him in-season and give up prospects?

I'm worried about signing Cliff Lee to a long-term contract, actually. He'll be 32 at the end of this season. Three years, okay; more than that, no thanks.
[10] Sure we can debate the terms and shorter will be better. But this is his 3rd consecuative year as best left handed pitcher in baseball. I like the chances of him keeping that up.
[7] I don't think Burnett's contract will be a hinderance. If anything, with the contract situation of Pettitte and Vazquez, it's possibile that the Yanks could go after Lee and let ML flotsam and jetsam round out the rotation.

The Yanks of the late aughts have tried to NOT have flotsam and jetsam as their 4/5 pitchers. They've seen enough of Ponson and the like.
One would expect the 2011 version of the Sox to be better (healthier) and that the Rays will be as strong (if not stronger, given their minor league depth). If that's the case, the Yanks can't afford to go into 2011 with CC, Hughes, Lee and 2 question marks.
[13] Lee has been traded twice recently, and neither of those deals contained MLB contributors. Maybe the Ms will try to extract more than the indians and phils were able to get.
In the end, the m's will want more value than the draft picks they're going to get but probably the centerpiece would be one great prospect and a couple of decent prospects.

They definitely have a need for power, so I'd have no problem dealing Miranda (as an example).
[16] Absolutely not Gardner. And yes, that's a complete reversal from my pre-season feelings. He's that important to this team.
[13] I suspect the Yankees will have to part with either Romine or Montero to start. They may take Joba, but given that he'll be arbitration eligible soon, I'd doubt it.
[14] So instead of Ponson, they have Mitre & Gaudin. Yanks and other teams always have these types of guys on hand if not for ML depth, for MiL depth. Of course it should be mentioned that there are other guys on the farm that can step in for a start or three.
Jack Z of the M's would probably want someone nearly ready to help (and that means Montero or Romine), and at least two very high ceiling kids: probably from the pitching side of the ledger. I'm not sure if Noesi fills that bill, but I'd bet someone like Manny Banuelos does.
My own feeling is that the Yanks should pass on a trade. As for free agency, he's worth signing ONLY if the M's don't offer him arbitration. Next year's draft class is overflowing with talent (supposedly), and the Yanks really don't need to give up a 1st round pick again.
Of course if Vazquez is a Type A free agent and the Yanks get a couple of picks from losing him to free agency . . . consider my previous 2 sentences moot.
A CC-Lee-Hughes-AJ-Joba rotation would be very nice indeed.
Part of me wonders if Lee is worth it, though. His insane level of control this year (still just 4 walks IIRC) is almost certainly a fluke, and it wasn't too long ago (2007) that he was completely lost. If you look at 2008-2010 as his peak (and it may not be!), I wonder if whoever gets Lee is going to be overpaying for that peak and not getting quite as much performance.
This is not someone like Moose, who had almost a decade of rockstar pitching behind him when he became a free agent. Caveat Lee-mptor.

As for Lee's 19/1 K/BB ration in 2010, yeah, that seems like a fluke. As for Lee shutting everyone down, inclding the World Champion Yanks, in the 2009 postseason, I didn't get the sense that was a fluke.
