On a swealtering day in the Bronx, Mariano Rivera blew a two-run lead to the Texas Rangers in the ninth inning, raising his ERA to 1.33. It is the first time he’s blown a save since he faced Boston at the start the season. Thankfully, our old pal Bernie Williams saved the day, cracking a two-run dinger in the bottom of the 11th to give the Bombers a 7-5 win. No soup for Mussina (who pitched a good game), and no soup for Mo, but lots of soup for everyone else, as the Yanks have taken three-in-a-row from Texas. They’ll go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon.

1. Nice one today. I really didn't need the extra innings though. The heat combined with my rising blood pressure when Rivera started putting guys on almost had me reaching for the Beta Blockers. As much as it was a beautiful sight seeing Bernie party like it's 1999 a 1-2-3- 9th would've more than sufficed. Mussina looked good too.
2. If these last six weeks of this season do become the Bernie Williams farewell tour - and I just realized they very well might be - I hope we see more moments like today's. You could tell it was gone the moment he hit it.
3. Clemens pitches another gem (8 IP, 0 R, 9 Ks, and goes 2 for 2 at the plate), only to have Brad Lidge come in for the 9th and give up a home run to the light-hitting Jack Wilson, Pirates lead 1-0. Astros still have a chance in the bottom of the ninth.
I've never been much interested in the Astros, but I hope they make the playoffs just so Clemens can pitch like this in the post season.
4. All three of Lidge's blown saves (leading to 2 losses plus yesterday's loss) have come with Clemens on the mound. Lidge is costing him the Cy Young right now.
But although that Bernie moment may be one of the last, it was one of the best swings I've seen from him in the last few years.
