News of the Day – 3/5/09

Today’s news is powered by “Will it Blend?”

  • MLB.com is reporting that Rivera will have his first bullpen session Thursday.  PeteAbe says Rivera will be throwing from the “Carl Pavano Memorial Half Mound”.

[My take: Pete can get a-hold of one every once in a while … ]

  • PeteAbe also got some news from Hughes (Phil) on his newly-improved curve:

Hughes explained that he’s throwing his curve with the same arm speed as his fastball. So instead of a big loop (picture Mike Mussina’s curve), it goes to the plate on a straighter plane but still has some action as it gets there. It’s how A.J. Burnett throws his curve.

Hughes devoted a lot of time in the Arizona Fall League to working on that particular pitch. “It’s hard to change because you get used to throwing a pitch a certain way,” he said. “In games, you tend to go back to what is comfortable. But they’ve been staying on me to throw the power curve more. I have to trust it and I do.” …

Hughes also has changed the grip on his change-up. He throws it like a splitter.

  • Bernie Williams went 1-2 as the DH for Puerto Rico in a WBC warm-up game.
  • A-Rod apparently had hip issues last season:

“Alex expressed a little stiffness. There was really no pain,” Girardi said on Wednesday, a day after the 33-year-old slugger played for the Dominican Republic in a tuneup for the World Baseball Classic. “We just thought it was best because he had some minor issues last year with it. We’ll have a better idea after today with what the course of plan is.”

The team announced on Tuesday that Rodriguez would get his hip checked by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo., on Wednesday afternoon. An exam Saturday revealed a cyst in the hip.

“Whenever you have something going on, you’re concerned,” Girardi said. “The fact he didn’t have a lot of pain is a little bit more comforting. He’s been able to play, and play at a high level. It hasn’t kept him from doing anything. It hasn’t kept him from driving the baseball. That’s the good thing.”

  • Jack Curry details the friendship between David Ortiz and Rodriguez:

When Ortiz performs goofy exercises or playfully mimics a pitcher’s motion, Rodriguez and the Dominicans smile. When Ortiz lags behind Rodriguez in sprints, he howls to see if that will slow down Rodriguez. By being his usually animated self, Ortiz is trying to make everyone relax, especially Rodriguez.

“This is a guy who has done it all in the game of baseball,” Ortiz said. “He’s a human being. We’re not perfect. If somebody is perfect, raise your hand, just like the Bible say. He admitted what he did and he feels bad about it. Come on, turn the page.”

[My take: Well, that’s helpful if he’s playing 2B or SS and is turning the DP, and its also helpful if he wants to hurdle the catcher on a play at the plate.  Other than that …. ]

  • Doug Bird turns 59 today.  Bird had 1.5 solid years for the Yanks as a reliever in ’80 and ’81, before being dealt to the Cubs for Rick Reuschel.
  • On this date in 1922, Babe Ruth becomes the highest-paid player in history when he signs a three-year contract that will pay him over $50,000 per season. In 1921, Ruth led the AL with 59 home runs and 171 RBI.
  • On this date in 1973, pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson make a stunning declaration. They announce that they have traded wives, children, and family dogs.

Looking at Xman' career numbers... EXcluding last year, he has a career OPS+ of 101. This was done in the NL Central and NL West. His OPS+ against righties in 80 pts lower then against LHP. When you add to this his below average D and very average footspeed, I have to feel that (especially against RHP), we are putting a very average guy, at best, in our OF.

If you consider Melky's far superior arm, much better D and slightly better footspeed, what kind of OPS+ would he (or Gardner) have to post to equate a Nady with a 101 OPS+?

Again, this assumes that 2008 (in the NL) was an outlier year. I like the guy but I just don't think he's that much. His trade value will never be higher. I wonder if we could swap him for someone who can help the team more.

At some time soon, we need to start thinking about getting a young SS.

Actually OYF I'm not sure how high his trade value is since he's basically a 1-yr rental owing to who his agent is. I know he had his best year ever last year, or more accurately his best half year ever (before he came to us!) but i think GMs will value him only for 1 year of service when it comes to trading chips.

That said, I agree that he is generally over rated...

A-Rod out 10 weeks with hip surgery per ESPN Desportes.

Crappity crap crap on the A-Rod news. That is doubleplus ungood. And if he was playing well, with no pain, why the surgery now?

So. . ., who plays third base?

Ransom or gasp Berroa.

[3] Hopefully, this wont be the first time that ESPN Deportes is right. The report still seems dubious to me, but if Arod is out 10 weeks, that means about 30-35 games, which could be enough to cost the Yankees the division.

If A-Rod is out, there has got to be somebody in the minors somewhere who'd be a better option for six weeks than either Ransom (who might top replacement level at least) or Berroa (who isn't worth trying). I'm just not sure who is such an option right now.

As a crazy idea, if Eric Duncan ever wanted to put together the month of his life, now'd be the time to do it. Assuming he can still play 3B.

It's on regular ESPN as well. It was a statement from Alex's older brother, Joe. I would wait until we hear from the Yankees, themselves.

[4] I Don't Know, the same guy from the Abbott and Costello routine. (Sorry, you set me up perfectly.)

[10] Well said, Will!

Personally, I'd like to see "Puff" "take a few reps", although we really don't need another lefty power bat, and he might not want to put the bridges at risk. *

* For the uninitiated, "Puff" refers to our version of "The Human Vacuum Cleaner", Graig Nettles and "the bridges" is a reference to his own as well as to George Brett's, with which Graig "had a small advisory role in choosing"...

;)

[10] Dang, I didn't even realize I was setting it up. +1 to Will
