"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Who is Eli Whitney, Smart Guy?

cootn

That’s my go-to Jeopardy answer. Works maybe once a year.

Anyhow, here goes an open thread in honor of Emma’s prime time debut.

Oh, and kibbitz away on the Phils-Rocks if you are inclined as well.

Go Emma!

3 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:05 pm

Oh my god, this is way too weird. I'm switching to Rockies-Phils. HOW ABOUT THAT SHANE VICTORINO.

4 ed   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:10 pm

Congrats, Emma! That is, like, the coolest thing EVER. My grandmother always says about people, "If s/he's so smart, why don't they go on Jeopardy?" (My doctorate, not so much.)

Sadly, I have neither DVR, nor will I be home to watch the show. And I gather from your comments that you will not be on again tomorrow. Still, that is UNBELIEVABLY cool.

5 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:11 pm

OK ... this Scrabble nerd has to admit, those anagrams were HARD!

6 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:12 pm

No way, Emma is this AWESOME. You look GREAT. Yo, what's up with the Dorkasaurus Rex on the end, the black guy who looks like he had a stick permanently shoved so far up his ass that it resulted in his nostils being permantly flaired and split his two front teeth two inches apart. That guy is one hilarious Pointdexter

Dude, you got two right in a row! And I'm sure you probably had a lot ot the other answers just didn't get the timing right with the buzzzer.

You RULE!

9 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:14 pm

Damn, that guy bogarted the buzzer from you on African Queen.

10 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:15 pm

That dude on the end with the crossed arm's got a mouth like a donkey!

11 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:15 pm

Guy in the middle with the crew cut looks like he ate Bert Blyeleven.

12 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:16 pm

15 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:19 pm

Ha. Yes, the guy on the end is my arch-nemesis, Terry from Plano, Texas!

By the way, my mom is never going to forgive me for missing that "Little Women" question. It was on the tip of my tongue!

16 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:19 pm

21 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:22 pm

[10]

That's Shrek's friend ... Donkey ...

22 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:23 pm

What's great about Terry is that he's an uber-NYERD, a bona fide DORKASAUROUS RED, and he's got those big ass chompers that are too big for his mouth and he knows they are too big and he knows that he's got two big ASS buck teeth but he knows he can't do anything about it. So he's got an edge of the angry black man about him but it's only to cover up his funny ass uber fugliness.

He is amazing. A worthy nemesis for sure.

23 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:24 pm

[22]

It worked for Michael Strahan

(I know a thing or two about bad teeth) :-)

BTW ... Emma, you look quite nice up there ... no outward nerves

24 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:25 pm

Who is Karim Garcia?

25 51cq24   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:25 pm

liveblogging jeopardy. awesome.

i walked into the kitchen to tell my brother that i kind of knew (of) someone on jeopardy, and the first thing he says, pointing at the tv, is "this girl went to yale with me." i guess he beat me, though he says he doesn't really know you.

26 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:25 pm

You totally don't know the answer.

27 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:26 pm

Nothing. SLICK. Love the tilt of the head and no words. Lady, you are TOO much. LOL

28 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:26 pm

Oh SHIT, Terrry got the answer and then does a little chest dance and crossed himself, HE BET THE WHOLE SHIT. He IS a worthy adversary.

DAG, that's a DISS Emma, that fuggly ass Nerdlick DISSED YOU.

LOL

29 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:27 pm

well that wasn't the most obnoxious reaction I've ever seen...

30 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:27 pm

[25] Dude, small world! Who's your brother?

[26] I had NO FRIGGING IDEA what the Final Jeopardy answer was, dude. If I'd had an hour to think about it I still wouldn't have gotten it.

31 51cq24   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:28 pm

your arch nemesis is a bit too much. i kind of liked him on his first day, but since then i can't stand the folded arm stance. what a nut.

32 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:28 pm

Terry is no Ken Jennings ....

33 51cq24   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:28 pm

[30] jacob quinn

yeah that was a tough one, i was hung up on 1969.

34 51cq24   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:29 pm

great job, by the way

35 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:29 pm

Well ... Karim Garcia only turned 34 in 2009, so that would not have been the right answer either ... who knew?

36 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:30 pm

Emma, thank you. That was memorable. And you did GREAT.

37 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:30 pm

Heck Emma .... you did great. I hope you enjoyed the experience overall.

38 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:30 pm

good effort emma

those dudes were fast on the buzzer

terry knows all kind of random shit but my god what a colossal dork

39 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:31 pm

Hey, The Jeopoardy on here at 7:30. Post Good Luck, Emma. Funny comments about the black dude, Alex. heh-heh.

40 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:32 pm

oh and this is the first time i have watched jeopardy in years - wasn't even sure what time or channel it was on

and let's go phillies

41 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:32 pm

Hey, thanks everybody! It was fun, albeit surreal. I still get $2000 for finishing second. So no complaints here.

42 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:33 pm

Although I do find it frustrating that even on something as massively nerdy as Jeopardy!, my lack of hand-eye coordination is STILL killing me! So unfair.

43 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:35 pm

I wonder if THIS is THAT Terry Linwood ... LOL!

oh balls. its on at 7:30 here. NOT READING COMMENTS

45 unmoderated   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:38 pm

jeopardy is all about the buzzer timing, isnt it?

46 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:39 pm

I can't believe no one made a "never been in my kitchen" joke. Here goes, Eli Whitney, Karim Garcia, and the Philly Phanatic. "Who are an inventor, cult hero, and stupid muppet who have never been in my kitchen." : D

47 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:45 pm

wow .... Terry IS a dork ...

48 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:52 pm

[45] YES.

49 Simone   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:56 pm

Damn Emma, that guy waxed you and the other guy. You had a good betting strategy though. I hope you won something.

You did your fellow Banter proud. Kudos!

50 unmoderated   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:56 pm

nice strategy in final j. i would have done the same. good job!

51 Simone   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:57 pm

I have always heard that good hand/eye coordination was key to winning on Jeopardy.

52 RIYank   ~  Oct 12, 2009 7:59 pm

Yeah, I had to lay off the comments too, it's on at 7:30 here.

Yep, good Final Jeopardy! strategy. I hate it when contestants do something stupid in the Final round. And I can't believe there wasn't a single sports category -- just that stupid Mantle question, too easy to give you an advantage.

Greta performance, Emma!

53 RIYank   ~  Oct 12, 2009 8:04 pm

I deeply resent Jeopardy! for making me put an exclamation mark in the middle of a sentence. I used to despise E. E. Cummings for forcing me to use lower case letters for his name, but then I found out it's not true, so I feel better about that. But what if I said my names was RIYank;? Would that mean you had to put a goddam semicolon after my name every time you wrote it? Or what if Alex decided to change the blog name to Bronx Banter,? I mean, where the hell do they get off calling it Jeopardy!?!?!?!

54 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 8:48 pm

Phillies squander bases loaded chance. Rockies into the 8th trailing 2-1.

55 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 8:58 pm

Man. A possible 4-6-3 double play and the Rockies Dexter Fowler literally hurdled Chase Utley. Rolings drops the ball and everyone's safe.
Wowzers.

56 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:03 pm

The Giambino ties it by fisting one into left. 2-2.

57 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:04 pm

[55] that was crazy

ole giambi with the opposite field hit

58 Emma Span   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:04 pm

As usual, Weird Al says it best.

Phillies - Rockies: I am struggling to care. Can't figure out who I should be rooting for...

59 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:05 pm

[56] hahaha - fisted - has cowchip rubbed off on you?

damn philly is blowing this game

60 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:05 pm

Giambi scores from 1st on a Torrealba double. 4-2 Rocks. Sweet.

62 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:07 pm

[61] :}

i take it you want colorado to win

63 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:12 pm

[62] I do indeed want Colorado. I lived there for 2 years and attended a few Rockies games. Plus I've never been to Philly and have no reason to go.
[58] lol. As Al said, there's always The Price is Right. : D

64 jen   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:17 pm

Crap, didn't get home in time for Jeopardy.

Whenever we played the sports edition of Trivial Pursuit and there was a basketball question my mom would always answer either Red Auerbach or Lew Alcindor. And she always seemed to get the answer correct more times than not.

65 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:17 pm

[63] gotcha - that's cool

66 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:24 pm

Street vs. Howard. This has 3 run job written all over it.

67 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:27 pm

Shit. Tie game.

68 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:30 pm

Huston. You have a problem. : (

69 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:34 pm

Miguel Cairo was a late addition to the Phillies' roster? That, my friends, is why Phildelphia cannot be stopped.

70 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:35 pm

See, Cairo was sent in to advance the game as quickly as possible to the closer. Smart, smart managing and roster construction.

71 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:37 pm

[70] The gang was wondering about your whereabouts during game 3.

72 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:39 pm

[70] I'm touched!

Actually, had a HS reunion to attend (no, I'm not telling the years or hometown) and stayed with family who, believe it or not, do not have an internet connection at home. But rest assured, I watched every inning!

73 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:39 pm

Congrats Emma! Any chance we can see your episode online?

74 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:40 pm

And look, now Cairo is playing in LF, his first OF start of the inning. That wily, cooky, crazy Charlie Manuel.

75 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:44 pm

Knock one out, Helton.

76 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:45 pm

Lidge vs. Tulowitski. I like Tulo's chances. C'mon Rockies.

77 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:45 pm

Rocktober almost over? Can Troy save them??

78 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:46 pm

[72] I commented that you were absorbed in CFL games...not sure HS renuions are much more exciting!

79 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:46 pm

Dude, isn't it great when you don't really care who wins a playoff game? Think Lidge gets the job done here?

I'm hoping Toolow gets a base knock.

80 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:48 pm

Charlie Manuel thinks that the slate is wiped clean when the PS season starts, and all the regular season stats are thrown out. So that's how it works?

81 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:49 pm

Make you appreciate Mo all that much more ...

82 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:49 pm

[79] Yes, I feel strangely relaxed..kind of hoping for a Philly-LA showdown though, would be great thee-ater

83 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:50 pm

[78] Actually, I had a really good time, and watched not a minute of CFL!!

[79] Even the worst closers succeed more times than not (I assume). The Phillies will end it here--despite or because of Charlie Manuel and Miguel Cairo!!!

84 Just Fair   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:50 pm

Lame.

85 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:51 pm

[83] From my keyboard to the field of play...

86 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:51 pm

Charlie's people skills must be REALLY good because his game management...well....they are defending champs so what can i say?

87 RIYank   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:58 pm

Hey, Primate Pantaloons! Whew.

Two words for you: internet cafe.

Don't forget next time.

88 Bama Yankee   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:58 pm

Nice job, Emma! You represented the Banter well. You are the second person I know that has been on Jeopardy...both finished second (nothing wrong with that, btw heck, just making it onto that show is though enough). You didn't seem nervous at all, I would have been so nervous that I probably would have misspelled my name on the screen. You should have totally gone with "Who is Karim Garcia?" on the final question...I would love to have seen Alex Trebek's reaction.

89 monkeypants   ~  Oct 12, 2009 9:59 pm

[87] ; )

90 ms october   ~  Oct 12, 2009 10:03 pm

nice to see you back in the fold mp

[82] yeah that is why i was sort of rooting for the phillies to get the dodgers/phillies rematch

91 Horace Clarke Era   ~  Oct 12, 2009 10:05 pm

I know two other people who made it onto Jeopardy, and neither won, and both said the same thing: it is all about the buzzer, and timing, not trivia knowledge. Everyone who gets there is good at trivia, but because the game turns on hitting it JUST as Trebek finishes ...

Good try Emma, if Terry doesn't know QE2 you win that game in the bottom of the 9th.

92 JeremyM   ~  Oct 12, 2009 10:36 pm

I was happy Giambi came through with the big hit (but dude, that mustache is hideous). Too bad they blew it- Street was awful and terrified to pitch inside, and Tulowitzki wanted no part of swinging up there, he was going for the walk and that was it. As someone above said, lame.
