"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Make it Happen

The Yanks have given us a wonderful season so far. It’s been as good as any in recent memory, really it has. Tonight gives the biggest game of the year, the first truly big game at the new Yankee Stadium. Here’s Cliff’s take, leftover from yesterday.

As you know, I’m generally a nervous fan, but after the Yanks lost Game Five I felt confident that they’d come back and close the Angels out in Game Six. Then there was an extra day off and now the butterflies have taken over and I’m Shook Bird like so:

I don’t remember the last time I felt this anxious.

I still say the Yanks find a way to win this series because I don’t want to fathom them not winning. As bad as things felt in 2004 I wasn’t surprised by it. The Red Sox were due. That they won in dramatic fashion made some kind of cosmic sense. I get that. But now, this is the Yankees’ time. Course the Angels won’t go out like chumps but it’s time for Good Andy and the Bombers to flex and be:

FRESH for 2009, you suckas!

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Here we go!!! Too long of a wait but we made it to Game 6, finally!!

2 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:45 pm

FUCK EM UP FELLAS!

3 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:46 pm

The Yankees need to jump all over Saunders early.

4 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:48 pm

I actually felt better this afternoon than yesterday afternoon, but the nerves are coming. I may watch this with the sound down.

5 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:49 pm

I really can't remember the last time I felt this nervous. I've been curled up on the couch, increasingly unable to distract myself. Got a huge pit in my stomach.

LOL

6 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:51 pm

Me too, re: nerves.

7 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:52 pm

[5] I am in the same boat...I think part of the reason is because it's been a few years, but for me, I really don't want to spend years cringing at the thought of the some the managerial moves. I still wake up in the middle of the night wondering why Torre didn't bunt on Schilling or send the runners with Varitek catching Wakefield or bring in Mo after Gordon gave up the home run, etc.

8 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:52 pm

I promised my wife I would remain calm, cool, and collected. We'll see how long THAT lasts. All this angst has taken a lot out of me this weekend. Oy! GO YANKEES!

[8] It has cast a pall over my weekend. Had they won this Thursday, it would have been a weekend of complete bliss, but alas.

10 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:53 pm

so all the suckers that wanna test
it's time to get
NERVOUS

but i'm going with :
i don't have no fears homeboy

11 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:54 pm

Cone wants to stick with Joba and Hughes.

Hughes, yes, with some trepidation, but I don't know what Joba can give us.

12 rbj   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:55 pm

I was actually productive last night, went to the mall and Penney's was having a sale on pants, about 33% off so I picked up three pair. Then home and the annual Halloween-tyme Sleepy Hollow viewing.

For some reason, I'm not that nervous tonight.

13 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:55 pm

[11] maybe coney gave them a pep talk in the pen

14 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:55 pm

[11] You have to stick with Hughes...but you need to protect him as much as possible. Still, other than Mariano, obviously, he remains the guy in whom I have the most confidence.

15 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:56 pm

[8] Heh heh.

16 rbj   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:56 pm

[11] Joba can give a collective ulcer.

17 jimcobain   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:57 pm

Every Yankee fan and myself included is nervous as all heck about the game. I hope that the crowd doesn't have that nervous energy and I REALLY hope the players are loose and ready to go. Me I am so tight I've put on CBS three times before finally getting FOX on... LOL.

18 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:58 pm

thank goodnes fox is getting to show the "ot" right now instead of starting alcs now

[14] i'm glad someone does - i have to admit i don't - i'm not sure if it is mechanical or trying to be too precise or what but have been nervous about him since the alds

19 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 7:58 pm

JUST START THE FUCKING GAME ALREADY!!

(I can't take it.)

20 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:01 pm

This is the kind of game that I wish I could wake up in the top of the 2nd inning, turn on the TV and see the Yankees are up 6-0.

21 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:01 pm

Isn't this supposed to be fun?

22 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:04 pm

I'm a mess

23 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:04 pm

[20] Don't say that. Remember that Oakland Game 5 (2000, was is?) when we did indeed have such a lead but Andy couldn't hold it? But we hung on to win anyway, courtesy, iirc, Stanton and Nelson. Or maybe just Stanton? Can't remember.

24 rbj   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:08 pm

I'm kinda hoping for a first inning A-Rod grand slam.

25 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:08 pm

I hate Mark Grace

26 jimcobain   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:09 pm

We're toast. Marc Grace just said Andy Pettitte is terrible in his TWO game 6 starts with his team leading 3-2. START THE FUCKING GAME!!!!

27 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:10 pm

team - fuck these fox clowns, brighten up - bernie should be throwing out the first pitch any minute

28 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:10 pm

These clowns on Fox are making me want to throw things at the television.

29 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:11 pm

[27] :)

30 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:11 pm

[28] I may put the Japanese announcers on..FOX gives me a migraine..

31 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:12 pm

I'm not all that nervous, but if they lose tonight, I'll be in an awful mood tomorrow and a wreck during Game Seven.

32 joe   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:12 pm

I'm excited! I think you guys should be thankful you aren't Angels fans. I'd be more nervous if my team was down 2-3 and playing in Yankee stadium against Pettitte and C.C.

33 rbj   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:12 pm

I'm watching History Channel until 8:20. Just trying to protect what's left of my sanity. MLB is stupid to wait until 8:20 pm for the game. A 4 pm start would have made the most sense.

34 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:13 pm

[32] Perspective, merschmective.

35 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:15 pm

[33] can't do it, fox's NFL contract

36 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:15 pm

i think i have decided that timmy is finishing his hot dog and beer while joe gets things going

and fuck fox for not showing us bernie

37 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:15 pm

I actually don't envy you guys & gals having to stay up late for the inevitable 4.5 hour game.

38 Paul   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:16 pm

I'm finding bliss with the thought that this really has been a great season. I've grown to love this team again everything about them, really.

If it helps, the MLB network has a better pre-game and now they're showing highlights from 1998.

39 Paul   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:16 pm

But I'm nervous as fuck right now too.

I fucking LOVE baseball!

I am strangely calm.

Goo Yanks.

43 Eirias   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:18 pm

Fellow Yankees fans, I heard somewhere that it is, indeed, on. Is there any truth to this rumor?

44 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:18 pm

[42] Baseball weather or baseball ether?

Either way, calm.

45 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:18 pm

[23] I remember that as if it was yesterday. Tino had the huge hit and they went up 6-0, but really did have to hold on for dear life.

46 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:19 pm

[42] Goo? :0

47 felix holt   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:19 pm

I'm way too sick to care as much as I normally do. I can barely breathe and yet I'm here.

Go Yankees!

48 Paul   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:19 pm

[41] It's all about the weed. Add that to a beer or two and I'm all good.

49 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:20 pm

[23, 45] big part of that game was Terrence Long losing a ball in the sun in that first inning...also Justice with a big insurace homer late

50 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:21 pm

Great to see more empty seats at the biggest game of the year,..

51 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:21 pm

[55] I'm not nervous, just flu-struck.

60 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:23 pm

[57] Well, we have to get at least 26 more...the key is with no runs in between!

74 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:25 pm

This post season is neck and neck with 1996 for the most anxious. The least anxious was 1999. For whatever reason, I felt supremely confident throughout that post season.

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:25 pm

[62] Thank you! I'd like to see at the very least another Yankees LCS victory before I die.

83 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:27 pm

[74] perhaps because they were 10 times better than any other team on the field. or because they only lost 1 game and it was against pedro.
but i think you're forgetting about 2001.

84 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:27 pm

[55] Heh heh.

85 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:27 pm

[81] Yes m'aam! : )

86 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:28 pm

[81] Let's strike his name for the record...I really hate it when the player looks more nervous than I am (said with a side glance at Nick Swisher).

87 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:28 pm

[74] 11-1 will do that to ya.

But I agree, that always goes down as kinda the "forgotten championship" for me. Not that I have overlooked it, but '96 was the first...'98 was the 125 wins...'00 was the subway series. '99 was just a really good solid team that beat 3 teams they were way better than.

In all honesty the biggest thrills of that postseason, just purely as a baseball fan, was the Mets/Braves NLCS

88 rbj   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:28 pm

[82] This is the best I've felt in literally 3 weeks, to the day. Dunno if it was the flu or what.

Now let's get some runs.

89 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:29 pm

[82] just come back from glasgow - you'll get to see it

90 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:29 pm

[83] Forgetting about 2001 in what way? The 1998 team was great too, but there was the pressure of not letting the 114 win season go to waste. 1999 was not only a great team, but it almost seemed like house money.

91 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:29 pm

All right, here we go, Derek.

This is soooo true and what makes being a Yankees fan so tough.
We have no choice. Just one option. We just can't lose.
It's like an innocent person being tried in court.
You can't win because even if you do win...
You just break even.

93 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:30 pm

[87] I always felt that the '99 team was better on paper than the '98 team. I knew they wouldn't win more games, but that was a real, real deep team in '99.

94 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:30 pm

I'd love some early runs!

95 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:30 pm

[87] i actually enjoyed 99 more than 98. nothing can top 96, but that 99 team was insanely good. they didn't win as many games as the year before, but i actually thought they were better. plus i was at the chad curtis game (game 3 of the world series).

96 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:30 pm

[92] after last game there is no way hoss is joining the circus

97 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:31 pm

[93] Also, the Indians team they faced seemed more dangerous than any of their 1999 opponents.

Dang, just missed it.

99 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:31 pm

Pettitte's postseason #s are amazingly like his career numbers.

Career - .629 WP, 3.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
Postseason - .625 WP, 3.90 ERA, 1.33 WHIP

Secondary #s like HR/9, SO/9, BB/9 are also close. Pettitte's got a belly full of guts in the postseason. My opinion is those guts perform similar to his April to September guts.

104 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:32 pm

[106] I think with 9/11 and the team coming off 3 straight, there was a lot less edge in 2001. I can also still look back on that outcome of that series without regret. I kind of look at it is the series the Yankees won 3 games to 4. The two walkoffs almost trumped winning the whole thing in terms of memories made.

116 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:35 pm

129 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:37 pm

So much for the early lead...that was a pretty bad AB by Matsui. I wonder how wise it is to allow Saunders to face three straight righties like that. Sometimes throwing a lefty into mix can make things more difficult.

That was an early missed opportunity...not the best way to calm the nerves.

130 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:38 pm

[115] i was pretty damn nervous. i just remember having to pee like every half inning in those extra inning games.

[130] The worst game in terms of nerves was game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. I think I wanted that one as bad as any other. That game was so intense that during it I couldn't imagine how I'd make it through it. If they don't win tonight, I think tomorrow will be like that.

Those heady, aggressive, fundamentally sound Angels.

.
And, by the way, nice defense by Swish!

150 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:41 pm

FUcking AWESOME. Eat Shit Scioscia.

151 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:41 pm

Hendrick is going to be a key in this game...the Yankees have to really bear down with him.

152 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:41 pm

[134] good point, that game was tense as hell. but i also don't remember ever being so happy from one baseball game.

153 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:42 pm

[150] Seriously..never want to hear about the Angels "playing the right way" again..they've been Little League awful on the bases this series

154 randym77   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:42 pm

I found 2001 more crushing than any other year.

There were so many people rooting for us that year that usually rooted against the Yankees. People who had moved to NY years before but hated the Yanks changed their minds and accepted their status as New Yorkers that year. Plus it was such a close series.

155 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:42 pm

Grrrrr...

158 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:43 pm

[152] Yep...when it was over, it was like surviving a near death experience.

It's funny....three of my top moments came in seasons in which they didn't win the World Series (the two 2001 WS walkoffs and the Boone game).

159 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:44 pm

2 out walk. D'oh!! C'mon, Andy. One more out.

160 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:44 pm

[154] i agree that it was the most crushing, but mostly because it was mo on the mound and he threw the ball away. and because it seemed inevitable (and only fair) that they'd win after the brosius hr.

161 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:44 pm

[156] Kendrick kills the Yankees and has been excellent since the All Star Break, especially against lefties.

162 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:44 pm

[158] I was in London that year, it was about 5am when Boone hit that homer..I was beyond delirious, thought i was dreaming!

Please concentrate here Andy.

164 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:45 pm

2001 was tough because we had a much better team. They had 2 aces, a super juiced OFer and who? That series really showed how important pitching is in the PS, and the D-Backs had little else.

165 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 25, 2009 8:45 pm

Come on.

Good news on Philips.

Can the Yankees get one positive sign!?

324 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:24 pm

Why give A-Rod the take sign on 3-0? In this case, a walk is NOT as good as a hit..

339 randym77   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:28 pm

I feel like the Yanks have actually played better tonight than the Halos. They've just been unlucky, and it hasn't translated into runs.

HI Diane.

[339] That's been the case all series...which is why it is very disturbing that this series is 3-2 and possibly headed toward game 7. Eventually, the Angels will play better.

[412] I'm exhausted. That's probably not good.

418 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:40 pm

The Yankees are a big inning offense...giving away an out mitigates against that happening. Girardi simply doesn't know what kind of team he has.

427 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:41 pm

[418] but you're worried about how tight they are down a run. shouldn't they get that first run on the board?

428 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:41 pm

Well, that wasn't hit swing.

429 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:41 pm

[380] weeping, you'll appreciate this. My daughter (who's almost 4) watched the top half of the first with me. I used the frame-by-frame on my TiVo to show her Andy's curveball, because she asked me why the ball moved. She picked it up right away, and the next time he threw one, she said, that was his curve, wasn't it daddy? =)

You know, I do not mind the bunt by Melky there. I'm strangely confident in that move.

I would like Jeter to single in both runs right now, though.

430 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:41 pm

435 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:42 pm

436 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:42 pm

[423] Then why don't we ever steal or hit and run?

Saunders did not retire a batter that inning..please, it was NOT a "gutsy" performance!

574 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:55 pm

I think it was a touch inside, pretty tough call against the pitcher I guess.

575 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:56 pm

[565] Arod got the call, but IF Posada can't plate another run, there's a decent chance the Angels would have been better off not having Saunders make that 3-1 pitch.

606 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 25, 2009 9:59 pm

I know there are more lefties due up, but this is very silly by Scioscia. Posada's always hit lefties well, and Matsui does too. I think this is because he trusts no one else in his bullpen, and he won't bring in any of the starters in the middle of an inning.

Good for our boys. Nice to see them have no bullpen for a change. =)

GOD DAMMIT! On a happy note, did you say A-Rod try to break it up?! Wow. He is not going to let us lose.

612 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:00 pm

ok well accentuate the positive

- knocked out the starter in the 4th is good

- gave Andy a lead

Posada really stinks in the playoffs compared to his career numbers.

614 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:00 pm

[647] He hates baseball, finds it very boring. I KNOW he said that, either during an interview, or maybe it was on his (short-lived?) HBO show?

I've always muted his football broadcasts, because I think he's even worse there - maybe that gets him up?

667 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:08 pm

[666] It's obvious he feels he's above the whole thing. I didn't know his HBO show was canceled- that's good to know!

[666 DAMIEN!!] he didn't say he hates it, just that h finds football much more exciting.

which ok thats fine, so let someone who appreciates baseball call the games then.

Matsui has always frustrated me, he looks great one at bat and then dog shit the next. I love him, but man.

681 TomB   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:10 pm

every at bat from Matsui seems the same. First pitch ground out

682 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:10 pm

c'mon robbie destroy cousin oliver

683 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:10 pm

[667] Had Hughes located his fastball at any point in the inning, I could understand him expecting that he could do it in that spot. Unfortunately, the only command he had was with the curve.

684 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:10 pm

That pitch to Posada was PHAT! He was just late on it with a bad swing. Po should have creamed it.

685 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:11 pm

689 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:11 pm

That was the same pitch that walked Alex. Stupid umps.

690 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:11 pm

I really hope they aren't going to sit on 3 runs now.

Damn it, Posada!

691 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:11 pm

Ugh.

692 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

[668] that's not how i remember it. i thought buck seemed on the verge of tears at the end, emotionlessly recapping the dramatic series.

693 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

The worst thing than hearing McCarver and Buck harp on this double play is knowing that they are absolutely right.

694 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

a collosaal assfuck?
Is there a goat involved in this?

695 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

[689] Umps always give more on the outside than on the inside of the plate. It's not right, but it's not surprising.

696 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

These announcers are really enthused by Oliver. I mean, he's doing his job but they're really enthused.

697 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:12 pm

Are they touching themselves while they are repeatedly saying double play? Man.

Darren Oliver, ace relief pitcher.

705 51cq24   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:13 pm

[683] that's true in retrospect, but at the time he had only thrown something like 6 pitches.

706 ms october   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:13 pm

[694] nope - goats don't like him

one thing buck does okay though is realize a ball is foul off the bat - sterling and kay have yet to master that

707 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:14 pm

[705] I don't think you can overlook how badly Hughes was missing with the fastball.

708 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:14 pm

Oliver probably is their best bullpen guy to be fair.

709 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:15 pm

[705] Every fastball to Hunter was no where the zone...unless they were pitching around him (which could be true), Posada should have figured out that he wasn't going to hit his spot with the fastball.

710 Just Fair   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:15 pm

Please send Choad back to the bench asap, Andy.

711 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:15 pm

[707] [709] you might be right, but i think you're exaggerating a bit. part of what convinced me his fastball command was so off was that pitch. prior to that i thought he was just nervous or rusty.

866 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:32 pm

ALL RIGHT!!!

Now, I would let Andy start the seventh. Joba does not sniff this game until extra innings. I go to Robertson or Hughes, then Mo--any one of them for more than an inning if need be.

i don't wanna see Joba tonight...

879 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:33 pm

seriously, as an Italian-American I find the constant whoring of Olive Garden in my living room to be deeply offensive

880 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:33 pm

We need at least two more runs here.

881 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:33 pm

I am confident with Andy starting the 7th and would have him carry the ball right to Mariano (maybe try to steal one out from Hughes, but not if men are on base)., regardless of the inning. Mariano can get 2+ innings.

882 monkeypants   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:34 pm

[865] In my mind’s eye, in real time, I saw that careening off Andy’s glove into centerfield. Oh God.

My vision was worse--that it ticked off his glove just out of reach on the IF, allowing one run to score and extending the inning for another excruciating AB with infuriating outcome.

Thank you, God, for preserving me from that.

883 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:34 pm

I'll say this, I trust Andy in the 7th a hell of a lot more than Burnett. I respect AJ Burnett, I'll do business with AJ Burnett, but I don't trust AJ Burnett.

884 joe   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:34 pm

I wouldn't mind seeing Pettitte, only because he wasn't hit hard last inning.

885 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 25, 2009 10:34 pm

[859] And hopefully a few more times after tonight, starting on Wednesday. =)

Pettitte comes back, but he goes batter by batter. First guy who gets on, pull him. Well, unless its a lefty due up I guess.

[1093] Sutcliffe's argument was that the Yankees would be happy escaping the inning up by one run, because they could go straight to Mo.

My question was more general, really. In the ninth inning up by a couple of runs, the leading team usually does not hold the runner on at 1B. I am just asking at what point would any of you be willing not to hold to the runner on 1B with a two+-run lead, to put your 1B in a better defensive position? The ninth inning? Eighth inning?

[1175] Your not stuck tonight, because you have used fewer pitchers...you still have Hughes and Robertson.

As for tomorrow? In a game like this, you have to go with your best chance to win NOW, not worry about tomorrow. Keep in mind, Mo might hold them here and then the offense tacks on a few runs, taking the pressure off for the 9th.

For the record, I agree with going straight o Mo here.

If we're going to bunt why not use Gardner whose speed:

1. Increases the chance of actually having 2 on and nobody out.

2. Plays better defense.

Ok so morales dropped the ball which "mutes" my point.

But not really cause here's Gardner now pinch running.

[1541] Might have faked out Posada if he was on the bases...that's what started the chaos on Thursday.

[1549] I would, Posada is in the toilet tonight

1552 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 11:46 pm

Dos Equis should've just sprung for Chuck Norris.

1553 JeremyM   ~  Oct 25, 2009 11:47 pm

If they bring in the new pitcher just to walk A-Rod, that's really dumb. Maybe they though Kazmir would lob it over the catcher this time?

1554 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 25, 2009 11:47 pm

The Yankees had to win this ALCS...they had to put the 2004 ALCS behind them...they had to put this Angels hex behind them...and, for me at least, they had to get to the World Series one more time while the Boss is around. For the Yankee brass, they probably also needed to get Girardi to a World Series in the Torre aftermath.

It really feels like this organization can now just go about the business of trying to win their 27th championship...which is deliriously refreshing.

Ol Hoss coming by with a scotch in hand. Can it be more satisfying than to have Pettitte be that good and Mo close it for him? I was weirdly touched to see the quiet, two-man celebration they had on the mound, before it became general over by shortstop. I've never seen that before.

They looked ... like grownups. And AL champions.

Reporters must not want to give Arod any credit, but you know what, I really believe that he probably doesn't care. CC is a very good choice too, but when you have an offensive player who has struck total fear into the oppostion, he has to be the MVP.

Checking in from Cooperstown...

I think that this is the second or third most satisfying Yankee pennant for me as a fan. Only 1976, when Chambliss homered, and possibly 1996, when they returned to the World Series after a long drought, have been any better. Six years doesn't seem like a long WS drought, but it has felt much longer than that.

Hats off especially to Pettitte, Chamberlain (an unsung hero tonight), and Damon, who brought home the first runs of the night.

1824 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:31 am

Ok, so what I didn't want to say the other night is that I thought - as much as you didn't want to EVER keep the Angels alive - if we could win, a Game 6 wasn't the worst thing.

We got to play another game and be more in rhythm for Wednesday, even better, we got to play another game on our home field and go straight from one game on our home field to another game on our home field to begin the World Series -

biggest worry is that Girardi has so little confidence in anyone in the bullpen besides Mariano, and with good reason.

1825 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:32 am

Anyone know if I can watch the YES post-game somewhere online? Will they upload it later to their official website?

1849 51cq24   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:48 am

[1842] divine intervention to help god get out of the inning? that's weird shit.

God, he is such a stoner!

He fucking cracks me up!

[1849] Heh he heh eh heh he!

1852 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:50 am

Because I can't stop posting random thoughts - they build up, because I'm superstitious about posting during the games, what the HECK was up with Mathis this series? How did he suddenly become Superman? That was some confounding shit, right there.

1853 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:50 am

[1848] yeah, it'll all be on the website, but not until tomorrow sometime.

[1846 and 1849] Wasn't it crazy, though? Maybe someone was apologizing to Mo for 2001.

1855 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:52 am

[1853] Nice, thanks. Stuck at home today, rain & flu..want to watch all the highlights and interviews for sure. Can't wait for the previews to come.

Oh, and one more time just for fun: "LA Angels of Anaheim: we play the game the RIGHT WAY"!

[1852] See Dent, Bucky (World Series, 1978).

1857 Just Fair   ~  Oct 26, 2009 12:57 am

My uncle lives in Cleveland. He is very much anti-Yankees. He will not be too thrilled with the Lee-Sabathia matchup. Oh well. : )

1858 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:00 am

I love how all my yankee-hatin met's fans (who don't choose to be apathetic) have no choice but to root for the yankees to win it. haha

They'll tell ya bullshit like "I'm not rooting for the yankees.. I'm rooting against the phils".. but that is rooting for the yanks. HAHA

1859 Just Fair   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:02 am

Y'all got to check NoMass. Great new pics up.

1860 Emma Span   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:06 am

I watched this one at a friend's place... just wanted to check in to say: YAY!

1861 monkeypants   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:11 am

We are all basking now...but soon we get to banter about the WS roster. Do you think they stick with two PRs and/or three catchers? Does the BP stay the same?

1862 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:13 am

[1861] I want to bask more, but please, no more Guzman.

1863 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:16 am

Oooooh, and uber-douchey Yankee hater extraordinaire Steve Phillips gets shit canned.

Sure, the Giants losing and Eli going pick happy sucked, but I'd have to say that all in all this was a very good day.

1864 51cq24   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:21 am

[1861] phillies aren't really a running team right? i'm hoping that the combination of that and burnett's last start convinces joe to let jorge catch him. and if he does that, i see no real reason to stick with 3 catchers. i think it's fine to keep guzman and just only use him when you actually need a pinch runner. i'd switch out cervelli (even though i'd actually prefer him to molina) for hinske.

1865 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:24 am

[1864] The Phillies actually run a lot and at a great rate. Utley, Victorino, Rollins and Werth are their man threats. In many ways, the two teams lineups are very similar.

1866 51cq24   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:31 am

[1865] interesting, but i'd still let posada catch every game, even though burnett will likely only start at yankee stadium. the phillies' lineup is good but pretty overrated. rollins and victorino are especially overrated. i'm really only worried about utley and howard, and i think even howard has some big holes in his swing.

1867 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:32 am

I feel the entrails of a pissant Angels fan spilling out both sides of my triumphantly raised fist. It feels squishy. And good.

1868 thelarmis   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:33 am

i hope hinske is on the WS roster. we can make changes for the next round...no?!

1869 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:38 am

[1866] I don't know, watching Jimmy Rollins just smoke a 98mph fastball to right-field..that scared me. If he get hot then their lineup is very very tough to get through.

1870 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:48 am

[1869] Statistically, Rollins doesn't live up to his rep, but if the game is on the line, I know I don't want to see him.

1871 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:52 am

[1870] Utley & Howard are as scary to us as Tex & A-Rod are to them...hope Matsui can wake up in time for the Series though! And Posada...we WON and those double plays still hurt!

1872 thelarmis   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:53 am

i think the phils will be a very phormidable phoe. it's gonna be a tough series. they have an excellent offense and play pretty good defense. outside of Lee though, they really don't have a very strong pitching staff.

1873 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 26, 2009 1:55 am

[1872] Joe Blanton or Pedro in the New YS = XXXX large Score Truck delivery.

The Yankees have the better starting, way better bullpen, WAYYYY better closer...they will be favored to win on paper...

1874 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 26, 2009 2:02 am

[1873] The Yankees are the better team, but the Phillies lineup does come close to matching the Yankees in power, which, all the small talk praise aside, can really be a difference maker.

1875 thelarmis   ~  Oct 26, 2009 2:12 am

yeah, the phillies' lineup definitely envokes fear in me.

hamels has been hittable, we should destroy pedro & blanton and CC should be able to match and outlast cliff lee. their pen has been good thus far in the postseason, but is no match for us.

i'll go with the Yanks in 6 again.

i can't remember if it was earlier this season or last, but our Cliff posted some really good stuff about Cliff Lee and how, at that time, he wasn't as amazing as he seemed. hopefully we'll hit him hard.

i think it might behoove us to stick with 3 starters and send CC out on short rest in Game 4.

in any case, i'm fuckin' THRILLED that we're in the WS!!!!

hell yeah!!! : )
