This painting of Sargent's niece is one of my favorites among the National Gallery's permanent collection. Beyond the sheer technical and imaginative genius of the work she always seems to put me in the same reflective mood as I sit and contemplate it. Handled by a less sensitive hand I could see how one would almost feel like a voyeur peeking in on a private moment but with Sargent it feels as though you've been invited in to see something of worth and value. I really like this one. It's a great way to begin your visit to the gallery. Repose indeed! Thanks Alex, think I'll go buy a print!.
