This has been such an uninspired, luckless season for the Yankees. It's about time they showed some life, instead of this tail-between-the-legs vibe they've given us most of the season.

2 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:32 pm

Yes, that's a really good description, Bruce.

C.C. looks good through 2...

3 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:39 pm

Johnny C ain't no slouch neither.

4 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:43 pm

C.C. walks the number 9 hitter with one out in the 3rd...

5 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 12:43 pm

Flash says Ryan Hanigan has a lot of linedrives right at A-Rod. That must be a real bitch when they play the Dodgers

6 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:44 pm

Dusty Baker wears double wrist bands on each arm.

7 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:46 pm

5) Speaking of A Rod, you know, I think ever since his hip injury the guy just doesn't generate any power. He used to have such strong torque in those hips I just don't think he'll ever have that again. He's a 20-25 homer guy now, tops. I think if he ever reached 30 again I'd be pleasantly surprised.

8 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:49 pm

Nice job by C.C. to get out of it.

9 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:51 pm

Hulk Hogan look alike? Well, hey now.

10 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:52 pm

Stewart homers...foul. And now he'll strike out. Bum luck.

11 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:52 pm

No! He drops a bloop single to right. Good for you, Hoss.

12 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 12:58 pm

More bad luck. 3-2, Stewart runs so Brandon Phillips in perfect position to turn an unassisted DP.

13 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:03 pm

Couple of two out walks and then A Rod gets a good pitch to hit and does nothing with it, no lift, no power. Weak pop up. The guy looks old, man.

14 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:06 pm

Just looked at the 1990 Reds roster. Number two is a bit of a surprise.

15 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:07 pm

Cano, with his patented back hand and then flip to first. Flip is wrong too because he throws with some force. Gets Votto. Sweet play.

16 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:07 pm

Michael Kay adds Lee Stevens like that matters.

17 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 1:08 pm

Afternoon folks, how's CC looking? Any sign of the Score Truck?

18 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:10 pm

[14] Lol. Me, too. Don't know much about Cueto, but he is fun to watch pitch.

19 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:19 pm

17) C.C. is looking terrific. Score Truck stripped and jacked out in Hunt's Point. And Cueto is dealing.

20 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:21 pm

Nice dp.

21 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:22 pm

Granderson got a bad jump on that, bloop hit.

22 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 1:23 pm

[19] Thanks.

Busted hit & run from the Reds broadcasters.

23 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:25 pm

Swisher's gonna hurt himself one day diving at a ball four rows in.

24 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 1:25 pm

Nice hustle Nick, even if it did go into the stands.

25 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:26 pm

Error by Alex.

26 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 1:26 pm

Ooof.

27 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:27 pm

One pitch later, Sabathia is out of trouble.

28 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:30 pm

[27] Really, best possible outcome there.

29 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:31 pm

I don't want Cervelli to come back

30 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 1:41 pm

Back from chores, just saw the score. Since when do they play soccer at Yankee Stadium?
CC v Cueto is a hitters incarceration.

This inning looks scary though. Boston hammering Lee in Philly.

31 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:43 pm

Wriggle-wriggle. 1 more out.

32 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:45 pm

er....

33 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:45 pm

Big Fella!

34 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 1:47 pm

Fortunate call for CC there.

He don't wriggle, he jukes. Although just love the word wriggle, how it's spelled, how it looks, how it feels.

35 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:48 pm

[34] He jiggles

36 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 1:49 pm

Just a little compact pick-up score truck might all that is needed. Please.

37 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:50 pm

Aw crap. Now we need someone to get him in.

38 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:50 pm

C'mon singles-hitting Alex, a base hit will do the trick here.

39 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:50 pm

No pop, Alex.

40 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:51 pm

C'mon, Alex. For fuck's sake!

41 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:52 pm

RAUL!!!!!!!!!

42 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:52 pm

Dino goes BOOM!

43 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 1:52 pm

Jesus Christ. He doesn't get any cheapies, huh?

44 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:53 pm

GREAT pick by Votto.

45 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 1:53 pm

Raul! Older than Arod, cheaper than Arod, where would the Yankees be this year without him? I know the answer...last place under .500

46 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:56 pm

This is just one of those days where C.C.'s got to handle the weight. And a day where I'm feeling the lack of a safety net--i.e. MO!

47 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 1:57 pm

He was sitting on that one.

48 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:58 pm

Yeah, really missing Mo.

49 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 1:59 pm

[46] Robertson too. CC has to keep it at a one run lead, pitch the 8th, and we'll see if Soriano is up for the task he wants.

50 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 1:59 pm

C'mon CC, 5 more outs, Hoss.

51 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:00 pm

Jesus Fucking Christ.

52 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:00 pm

Well, so much for that

53 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 2:00 pm

Shit.

54 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 2:00 pm

Bollocks. Bigger score truck needed now.

55 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:01 pm

Unbelievable.

(Just tuning in.)

56 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 2:01 pm

On an 0-2 pitch too.

57 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:01 pm

On an 0-2 pitch too. And the shittiest thing--not to be a downer--but this year's team hasn't shown much ability to pull a game like this out.

58 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:03 pm

[56] Hits on 0-2 counts never really bothered me.

In fact, the useless waste pitch bothers me alot more.

59 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:03 pm

Man, these Reds are hackers.

60 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:05 pm

Okay, two down. One more Big Fella.

61 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:06 pm

Votto's on deck, man, c'mon...

62 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:07 pm

This could get ugly. C'MON C.C. MAN-UP, BRO. Biggest out of the game right here.

63 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:07 pm

I think Michael Kay has called everyone in this lineup "Stubbs" so I have no idea who's up.

64 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:09 pm

Great 2-1 slider.

65 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:10 pm

Keep it together, man...

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:12 pm

1-2...

67 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:12 pm

Man, he left that 1-1 pitch over the plate. Got away with one. Slider time...

68 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:12 pm

Oh man, Max Scherzer has 15 Ks through 7 for the Tigers. He's at 115 pitches looks like Leyland is going to Dotel for the eighth. Grrr.

C'mon CC.

69 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:12 pm

It was a good one. Nice job by Phillips to lay off it. I'd go back there again.

70 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:13 pm

Back door. JUST missed. He'd going to walk home a run against the Reds? Say it ain't so...

71 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:13 pm

Why is he getting cute?

72 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:13 pm

Emergency hack keeps Phillips alive.

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:14 pm

Oh, FFS.

74 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:14 pm

Not. Even. Close.

Fail.

75 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:14 pm

Ballgame.

76 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 2:14 pm

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
2 homers. 3 Straight walks. What. The. Fuck!

77 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 2:15 pm

That just sucks. CC needs to come out.

78 thelarmis   ~  May 20, 2012 2:16 pm

meanwhile, fuckett is throwing a shutout vs. cliff lee. we'll be in last place in no time... : /

79 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:16 pm

It has to be hard pitching in front of a team that can't hit, but this just isn't good enough CC.

80 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 2:16 pm

[77] And I don't mean the closet.

81 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:17 pm

Can the Yankees score a run in nine outs?

82 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:17 pm

OK, we can get that run back. And add on some more.

83 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:17 pm

Now, the offense needs to pick his ass up. Wise and Stewart? Well, stranger things have happened. Yanks must win this game. Are you MEN or MICE?

84 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:18 pm

The very definition of snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory.

85 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 20, 2012 2:20 pm

Nice to see Big Baseball Excitement in the Balto-DC area.

86 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:21 pm

walk is as good as hit Wise.

87 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:21 pm

84) Game's over, huh?

88 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:21 pm

[83] Pass the cheese please...

89 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:22 pm

What exactly does Dywane Wise do well again?

90 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:22 pm

[87] I dunno. You a betting man?

91 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:22 pm

It is a shame that Mark Prior hysteria could sink the Nats pennant run.

92 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:23 pm

C'mon, DJ.

93 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:24 pm

And it's Dotel in for the Tigers, Scherzer doesn't get a chance at the 20 K mark.

94 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:24 pm

90) Sure, what's the bet?

95 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:25 pm

Question is: can the pen hold the Reds down?

96 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:27 pm

Not to start jumping on Derek or anything and I know he was never going to hit .395 for the season, but he sure has been in free fall since he was at that point what, maybe ten days ago?

97 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:27 pm

[94] Dude... you give up this blog. I can't take advantage of you. In another year, I'd call this an easy Win. But the year, Ibanez and those other 8 guys and really stumbling.

98 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:30 pm

In the last 10 days, Derek is 10 for 41, all singles, with 3 BBs.

99 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:32 pm

[98] I'll bet he's tired.

100 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:33 pm

[98] Well, tired/has some nagging injury.

97) I'm sorry. I was being antagonistic. I'm going to just shut my mouth.

102 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:36 pm

Nice job. Now, go get that lead back, fellas.

103 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:39 pm

Let's go Grandy!

104 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:40 pm

Way to go, way to go!

105 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:40 pm

Fuck.

Held him to one.

Ok, fucking team, get him the fuck IN!

106 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 2:40 pm

That's a start. Just missed getting a double.

107 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:40 pm

Tying run aboard.

108 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:43 pm

That kid is great.

109 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:44 pm

Been calling that wide strike all day.

110 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:44 pm

All right, Rob, look breaking ball outside.

Don't let him beat you there.

111 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:45 pm

Doesn't look good for Rob...

112 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:45 pm

Uno, Dos, Tres.

113 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:45 pm

Jesus, that was FUGLY.

114 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:46 pm

And now Alex, who has had a couple of pitches to hit today and he's hit lame fly balls. Almost just have to hope he can get a line drive in the gap.

115 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:46 pm

[101] Besides, I'm been doing this since '65. Ya don't really want me to bet AGAINST the boys, do you? The thing is... they are missing SPARK. The talent is there, but they are playing like they don't believe,

116 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:47 pm

I hope all this mixing and matching bites Dusty in the ass.

[115] I wonder if the loss of Mo has affected the psyche of the team.

117 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 2:49 pm

Really? Fucking Bollocks!

118 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 2:49 pm

Michael Kay sucks.

119 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:49 pm

Fuck you, Kay!

I wasn't looking and then I hear Kay screaming...

And where does it end up?

Fucking track, and not even against the wall.

Asshole fooled me.

120 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 2:50 pm

Dammit! Even the Reds announcers thought it was out of the park.

121 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:51 pm

Wind. Damn. He hit that one fine.

122 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 2:52 pm

Over at RAB, a number of people suggested a lineup of:
Jeter
ARod
Grandy
Cano....

While they say lineup order makes little difference, I would like to get ARod out of the 3/4 spot. He is basically a high OBP guy with 20 HR pop. He might be 'insulted' at first, but I think he feels pressure to be the guy. But now, he's not. And that's OK. In the 2 spot, he might go for contact instead of power.

[INSERT} ARod looks like a HR, but it's a long out.
[BACK TO DIALOG]

Anyway, Grandy and Cano are now better HR hitters. That's not an insult, just a product of time. Let ARod have a new role as a base-setter.

123 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:56 pm

122) Think you are right about Alex. Good logic about the order. Trouble is, what we fans come up with that sounds logical just doesn't fly in real life, not with these egos. Girardi isn't Joe Maddon. Will take a lot more sucking from A Rod before Joe G makes a move, whether it's the smart thing to do on paper or not.

124 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 2:56 pm

[120] Even if you think it's out of the park, you need to wait to SEE go out of the park before you get all hysterical.

Just watch the ball's flight and say what you see. It's hard not to get ahead of oneself but they do do this for a living, I think it's fair of us to expect they exercise some discipline.

125 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 2:59 pm

124) Maybe they're as "tight" as the team.

126 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 3:06 pm

Sigh.

128 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:07 pm

Booooo!

129 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 3:08 pm

Hopefully this is rock bottom

130 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 20, 2012 3:09 pm

I got up to help the wife with the groceries and come back to 5-2. Holy Bullshit!

131 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 3:10 pm

[123] I agree that Girardi won't go there (yet), but I think ARod would be OK with it. Batting 2nd isn't an insult. I think he wants to Win, and would see it as a smart move. Besides, he's welcome to hit 40 HRs out of the 2 hole. He would score more runs and might even enjoy his new spot.

ARod's not dumb. He already knows he is approaching 'twilight'. He's got 5 more years, and he will not be batting 4th for long anyway.

132 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:11 pm

131) I remember them moving Bernie to the 2-spot when they wanted to get him going. I'd like to see Joe make that move.

Fresh direct from sickbay, here comes Tex.

133 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 3:14 pm

[132] More than anything, I'd just like to see the same lineup out there in the same positions for a week.

I don't know if it will help, but overrest isn't working either. Maybe they need to get in some kind of groove.

134 thelarmis   ~  May 20, 2012 3:16 pm

yeah, how did it become FIVE-2? jeesh.

and did jeter hurt is wrist? fuck.

lookin' pretty doomy & gloomy...

135 mhoward120   ~  May 20, 2012 3:16 pm

This freaking wind makes me wonder whether God is pissed at the Yankees for some reason.

136 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:17 pm

Wise can't be hitting, right?

137 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:17 pm

139 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:18 pm

What about Andruw there?

140 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:19 pm

Ugh.

141 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 3:19 pm

[140] Ibanez? Swisher?

142 Alex Belth   ~  May 20, 2012 3:21 pm

And it is such a nice day. Instead of stewing about our lousy ball club, think I'll go out and enjoy it while it lasts...

143 OldYanksFan   ~  May 20, 2012 3:21 pm

Was that Ball 4?

144 Mattpat11   ~  May 20, 2012 3:21 pm

Yankees have lost something like 46 of their last 50. Hell, if they suck its easier for me to get tickets.

145 rbj   ~  May 20, 2012 3:21 pm

Lifeless offense.

146 thelarmis   ~  May 20, 2012 3:30 pm

what a bunch o' bollocks.

147 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 20, 2012 3:33 pm

[142] Smart move.

148 Bruce Markusen   ~  May 20, 2012 4:57 pm

I'm pretty much reaching my boiling point with this team. What a lifeless, apathetic bunch. It's as if they're saying, "We've got a lot of injuries. We can't be expected to play any better." They can't hit with runners on, can't make basic defensive plays, can't hold leads. Very, very disappointing.

149 Boatzilla   ~  May 20, 2012 5:26 pm

We are checking out the solar eclipse in Japan. It's getting dark again at 7:30 AM. Looks like this Yankee team is already being eclipsed by the rest of baseball.

150 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 20, 2012 6:26 pm

[148] I'm kind of reaching that point as a fan, to be honest. Find myself watching highlights of Strasburg, Harper, Lincecum, Adam Jones..exciting young players on good teams. This Yanks team...

and yet they have a bench with guys I really like. A Jones, Chavez, Ibanez..

[149] Super cool, watched it from the balcony.

151 monkeypants   ~  May 20, 2012 7:19 pm

[150] having fun gus on the bench is one thing, but it does not compensate for a lack of exciting starters. This is not to say that the yankees starters are completely uninteresting. But there is something really fun about watching young players, especially those who were developed in house. The yankees results in this area in recent years has been lacking.

Speaking for myself, i find this team utterly boring, save for tracking jeter's milestones.

152 Boatzilla   ~  May 20, 2012 8:42 pm

[132] Unfortunately, I have little faith that Giradi will ever do anything even remotely creative. Well, except, of course, this insane galloping DH thing.
