"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Oh, it’s You Again

Can you remember the last time a Yankee-Red Sox series felt this dull this late in the season?

That doesn’t mean we don’t want the Yanks to win the series of course, or that watching these games won’t angry up the blood some. But it ain’t Must-See-TV, that’s for sure.

It’s Hughes tonight, weather permitting. Supposed to rain all weekend.

1. Jeter DH
2. Swisher 1B
3. Cano 2B
4. Jones RF
5. McGehee 3B
6. Granderson CF
7. Martin C
8. Nix SS
9. Suzuki LF

Never mind those battlin’ BoSox: Let’s Go Yank-ees!

Rain on the weekend is always a bummer. But with a kid getting used to his arm in a cast, I wonder if it's a blessing in disguise. Maybe it won't suck so much for him if we're all in there playing board games and popping popcorn or whatever.

2 thelarmis   ~  Aug 17, 2012 3:24 pm

i'm playing a big and important outdoor gig tonight.

let's all hope the rain holds off down here! i'll have just about ALL my gear outside...

GO YANKS!!!

3 Chris   ~  Aug 17, 2012 3:42 pm

Missing the only game I will get to watch all weekend tonight. But it's for a great cause:

[3] Wow, that looks like fun.
I'm back home, and I'll be watching on NESN tonight (I think the weekend games are on FOX and ESPN).

But yeah, it's not even gonna be that much fun to win. Or all that painful to lose -- it would be like losing to the Twins or something.

5 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 4:19 pm

Wouldn't mind seeing the look on Bobby V's face as the Yankees sweep the Sox.

6 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 17, 2012 4:36 pm

5) Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I could also see a disaster, Sox sweep and have life.

7 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 17, 2012 4:50 pm

Teix out with a sore wrist... probably will miss Saturday too. Let's really hope this is not a major issue.

8 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 17, 2012 5:02 pm

7) Hmmmmm....

9 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:05 pm

[5] I'm curious about the sources that are leaking all the inside turmoil in the RS clubhouse; if that much is known, they also have to know who the "mutineers" are and have been devising ways to extract them from the team during the off-season. Those issues aren't going to go away by themselves, especially if Bobby actually is slated (and chooses to) go into season 2. Huh, the way John Henry and Co. were portrayed in Moneyball, you'd think they'd have seen this coming (apparently Theo did, not that he's all that better off right now)...

10 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:11 pm

[9] It depends on who the malcontents are.
They want to unload Beckett and Crawford, even at the cost of a big chunk of salary, but they expect to have a lot of trouble doing it (although there's some talk of doing a Burnett with Beckett).

Shit, it's raining.

11 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:12 pm

Uh, so, will it stop? I assume they wouldn't have started if there was virtually no chance of playing the game.

12 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:13 pm

Crap, rain. Is Derek Lowe available tonight?

13 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:14 pm

[10] And we have to factor in all the spin from the parties.

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:19 pm

That's a beaut, Swish!

15 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:19 pm

Smile, you flake!

16 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:20 pm

Swish swat!

Now let's get the legal 4.5 innings in.

17 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:20 pm

NESN just showed the two managers in quick succession as Swisher rounded the bases. It was cinematic genius.
Remy and Orsillo are monotonous, though.

18 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:25 pm

Russell would like the tarp to come out now.

19 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:26 pm

TIme for my my weekly "Let the Pitcher catch the fucking pop up for fuck's sake" shout.

20 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:27 pm

Why are they playing in this rain?
[17] I got NESN on today too..it's nicer in the background.

RIYank, the summer High School Baseball Tournament is on now here in Japan. I'm down in Osaka at the moment near Koshien Stadium where it takes place, also home of the Hanshin Tigers. The other day this kid struck out 22 in one of the qualifying games, then 19 in the next one. He should be due for a huge posting fee then Tommy John surgery in aout 6 years.

21 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:30 pm

The change-up is fooling the Red Sox. Phil looks as good as he has in weeks.

22 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:31 pm

[20] Heh.
22 and then 19! Man. I assume those are nine-inning games.

23 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:34 pm

Buller homer indeed. Nice.

24 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:34 pm

Good work, Curtis!

I wonder if they were told to just swing for the fences. Get the game over with faster.

25 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:34 pm

Curtis with the long ball!

26 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:35 pm

And Russell with the muscle!

This is fun. I'm not sure it's baseball, exactly, but I like it.

27 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:35 pm

Belly to belly!

28 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:35 pm

Whoo hoo. Home run derby!

29 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:41 pm

AT&T Trivia Question from NESN:

Who is the only member of the 2004 Red Sox to go on and win a WS with a different team?

30 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:44 pm

29) too easy. Johnny Heartbreaker.

31 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:47 pm

Oh, nice job, Phil.

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:47 pm

That's terrible. Just terrible.

33 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:48 pm

[30] Yeah.

Fuck, it should be two down, bases empty. I guess the ball was wet or something.

34 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:59 pm

Crap.

35 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 6:59 pm

I hate that fucking midget. Nice work, Phil. His location blows.

36 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:01 pm

Phuckin' Phil.

37 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:02 pm

You could so see that coming, esp. after the walk.

38 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:02 pm

fuggin' batting practice pitch to Pedroia.

39 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:04 pm

What time does the Varsity game start?

40 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:08 pm

Whoo, Rob hit it hard.

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:10 pm

Ugh. That's back to back just missed its.

42 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:16 pm

Yeah, sure, now.
Can't get over that botched DP ball. Grrr.

43 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:26 pm

Listen to Coney, droppin' the SABR!

44 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:32 pm

Huh, perfect positioning on that. I thought it was a hit for sure.

45 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:38 pm

Captain. What a season!

46 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:38 pm

Good. I wouldn't want anyone else to tie the game, or any other way. Perfect.

47 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:39 pm

Cap'n!

48 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:40 pm

Wow ... Jeter's 9th on the Yankees' homerun list?

I'd never have guessed that.

49 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:43 pm

[48] Overrated. Bill James says so. :P

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:48 pm

It sure is nice to have a utility infielder who doesn't make you hold your breath every time a ball is hit to him ...

51 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:50 pm

I'd now like to see an all homer/no singles win just for kicks.

52 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:53 pm

[51] Their isolated power is impressive tonight.

53 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:53 pm

Oh, the utility infielder spoils the all-homer game.

54 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:55 pm

Don Orsillo: the ball somehow eluded Granderson.

55 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:55 pm

Dammit McGehee! Well, win anyway I say.

56 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:58 pm

LOOOOOOOOOOOONG single.

57 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 7:59 pm

Hey, how about a pinch hit for Bodie here?

58 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:01 pm

A three run shot here would be nice.

59 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:03 pm

I smell a GIDP, though....

60 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:04 pm

3-1. Hit and run.

61 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:05 pm

That is some piss poor pitch recognition.

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:05 pm

Horrible swing from Martin there. Just awful.

63 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:07 pm

FUCK YOU Martin.

That was terrible.

See [57]

64 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:07 pm

Bollocks!

65 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:07 pm

Couple of ball fours there.

66 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:09 pm

Lovely. That's how it is done! : )

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:09 pm

NIX!!!

68 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:09 pm

O.K. I'll take that.

69 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:10 pm

They both swung at the low-away pitch, but Nix got some of it.
Lucky > good?

70 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:10 pm

That was great reaction from Morales. Too bad, dude.

71 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:13 pm

[69] I wouldn't say it was luck at all. Martin tried to pull an outside slider and swung over it, Nix went with the pitch and dumped the ball into RF.

That's approach, not luck.

72 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:14 pm

Short hook with Hughes ... short hook with Hughes ...

73 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:20 pm

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts Hughes would be going into the 8th with 1 unearned run and about 85 pitches. Damn you fucked up double play! Damn you to hell!

74 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:20 pm

Now RoSo

75 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:24 pm

SWISH SWATS!!!

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:25 pm

Man, Cornflake has totally taken to the 2-Hole!!!

77 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:25 pm

I hit 'em from the left, I hit 'em from the right. I hit 'em all night long.

78 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:27 pm

[73] Exactly.

[71] Still lucky, though. Nix could try taking that pitch to right twenty times and he'd only slap it into grass 5 times. (Or something like that.)

79 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:33 pm

[78] Maybe. I guess my point is that when Martin isn't going well (which really describes like what, 3 out of his last 4 years?) he couldn't hit an outside pitch with a freaking boat oar, because he's always. trying. to. pull. every. fucking. pitch.

It's really, really tedious. And it's his approach, not his luck.

80 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:35 pm

Man the skies are about to explode out here. Black, thunder. I guess we are gonna get your rain.

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:36 pm

Now that???

That was luck.

82 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:37 pm

Kick ball!

83 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:37 pm

Alright, Hammer ... nail this rat-faced fuck.

84 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:38 pm

Phew!

85 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:38 pm

Back to the stable. No multi homer game for you!

86 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:39 pm

Where art thou, my Hammer?

87 monkeypants   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:40 pm

[79] when Martin isn't going well (which really describes like what, 3 out of his last 4 years?)

More like 4 out of his last 4 years, except for April and August 2011.

88 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:40 pm

Maybe a little more insurance?

89 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:43 pm

[71] I agree 100%. Good approach doesn't mean you will bat 1.000, but you WILL bat better than bad approach. He put the bat on the ball, which means there's a chance something good will happen. Swinging strikes rarely lead to anything good.

90 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:46 pm

Man Bobby V does not look well.

91 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:49 pm

[90] I don't think he returns next year.
Dang, almost more.

92 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:49 pm

[89] I'm hoping the Yankees have higher ambitions than "there's a chance something good will happen." I think you've been watching the Red Sox too much.

93 monkeypants   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:49 pm

[89] Of course, Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth swung and missed a lot...

; )

94 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:51 pm

[93] It's an interesting approach to advocate on Five Solo Homer Night. Just sayin.

95 RIYank   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:52 pm

When you hit the ball so hard it goes over the fence, there's a really really really high chance something good will happen.

Okay, I got it out of my system now.

96 monkeypants   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:53 pm

[94] Yes, but the go ahead run came on a single. Let's keep everything in perspective.

97 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:53 pm

Let's get this thing untucked.

98 monkeypants   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:57 pm

[95] But it's never certain. In fact, there is only one certainty: you just can't predict baseball.

99 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:58 pm

Very nice win. Good catch by the Irishman! : )

100 rbj   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:58 pm

Untuck!

Good night all.

Seems appropriate that McG. went right over to the visiting dugout for the last out.

102 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 17, 2012 8:59 pm

That was a pretty catch.

103 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 17, 2012 9:02 pm

Well, that turned out better than it seemed when I tuned in just in time to see Phil give up a 3-run shot to the rat-faced fuck.

Lovely.
