The best thing about loving the World Cup?

LOVING THE WORLD CUP!

The 2nd best thing about loving the World Cup?

Not caring about this year's Yankees' team (for right now)!

But, Hey! The Yankees are spending mad money in the International Draft ... that's good (for the future)!

2 RIYank   ~  Jul 3, 2014 3:14 am

Yeah, the World Cup has been great, including great as a distraction.

That sounds good, about the International draft -- can you give us a link, cult? I hadn't heard anything about that.

Oh, and more good news: we will now have Zelous Wheeler, who at the very least has an awesome name.

Ah, found it, at River Ave Blues. International free agents. Their spending a pile, way over their allotted 'pool', which means they pay a 100% tax to MLB, but it does look promising. There's a batch of Venezuelan teenage outfielders, a catcher named Flames (seems like he should pitch), and an 18-year-old Korean shortstop who a lot of teams were after. Also three top Dominican prospects. All in all they've reeled in a large fraction of the top-thirty international prospects.

A good read if you're not feeling toooptimistic. Thanks, cult.

Hm, maybe too many links. Here's my comment again, without the links:

Please excuse me for not feeling over Zealous about the Yankees infield any time in this decade. I feel an Horace Clarke era coming on.

For the record, the Mariners are 47-36, with a line-up of no-names great pitching and some dude named Cano. Oh, and that division is no push over.

And let us not forget that Major League Baseball allowed A-Rod to use testosterone. Cannot get any worse than this!

7 ms october   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:17 am

yeah i basically went straight from nba playoffs to world cup and haven't watched much of the yankees.
i saw on both ny1 and sc this morning that they are 2-9 in their last 11 games. so i guess i am not missing too much.

On the bright side, at least we're not getting our asses kicked by an AL East opponent this weekend.
We'll just get whupped with a pillow case full of Twinkies, which shouldn't hurt as much.

RIP Louie Zamperini. If you haven't read the book about his amazing war time experiences "Unbreakable" it is really worth your time. He was an Olympic runner and Marty Glickman put on a memorial race at MSG in 1945 only to find out he was still alive.

10 MSM35   ~  Jul 3, 2014 10:48 am

"Unbroken" excuse me.

11 Ken Arneson   ~  Jul 3, 2014 1:38 pm

OK, folks, going to be doing some maintenance on the server now (actually moving to another server), so things may seem screwy for a couple of hours. If so, don't panic!

12 Ken Arneson   ~  Jul 3, 2014 4:07 pm

Testing if this works now.

13 Ken Arneson   ~  Jul 3, 2014 4:10 pm

Yay, it (mostly) works now. Good. Proceed, everyone...

So Long Solarte. Hello Zelous!

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 3, 2014 6:11 pm

There's a video on the E$PN baseball page of Yasiel Puig doing an interview. He's wearing a t-shirt that says 'PUIG'. I love that guy!

18 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 6:33 pm

Tampa getting smoked early. 6 batters in to the game and Detroit leads 5-1 2 two run homers and one solo shot.

19 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:13 pm

And away we go

20 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:25 pm

9-2-5-7 put out?

21 coleman42   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:35 pm

For those who don't want to see Phil Hughes pitch a no-no, Sundance Channel is airing "Born on the Fourth of July" with Tom Cruise.

22 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:39 pm

Zelous time!

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:51 pm

Brazil Columbia tomorrow. Netherlands Costa Rica Saturday. Go orange!

33 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:55 pm

Tanaka can field

34 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 7:55 pm

Is this the game thread?

Brendan Ryan is on this team for his glove, correct? I just wanted to clarify that.

35 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:02 pm

[33] the thread does start with gruesome

36 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:03 pm

Oh fer fuck's sake.

Sigh.

37 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:13 pm

Thinking of something nice to say about this game...

Target Field is pretty.

Kenny sounds like he enjoyed Hawaii....

38 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:14 pm

All we need now is Charlie Brown on the mound and Lucy in right field.

39 coleman42   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:15 pm

[36] Phil's doing a nice job?

40 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:15 pm

[36] NHK has the Twinkie announcers. God awful. It's hard to describe. Folksy in a very unpleasant way.

41 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:16 pm

Oh Jeebus. We get to hits to start the inning and now this?

42 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:17 pm

Well there ya go!

43 coleman42   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:17 pm

49 coleman42   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:21 pm

Anyone listening on the radio? The call on Zelous?

50 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:21 pm

Aw dagnabit, missed that. Congratulations Zelous!

51 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:23 pm

Zelous! What a smile. He's got a real Kirby Puckett body doesn't he!

52 coleman42   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:24 pm

[50] THATS who he reminds me of, the former Twin no less!

53 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:25 pm

[51] I forget but Kirby was even shorter, right?

54 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:26 pm

Bey Guys. Sorry for the snafu today. We changed servers and I put up a game post before the conversion was done and it subsequently got lost.

My bad.

Good game so far. Now THIS is the Phil Hughes we remember. Great smile on Port Jervis' replacement's place.

55 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:27 pm

[46] No, I dig Minnesotan (just finished the fabulous Fargo series). These guys ain't that.

Fuck me, I step away and miss a whole month's worth of offense.

56 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:27 pm

Over (the wall) Zelous!

57 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:31 pm

Puckett >> Puck
Coincidence? I think not.

"...what fools these mortals be...."

58 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:32 pm

[53] we demand a refund!

Looks like Ken also has been working on the Yankees offense

59 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:35 pm

Jeter Lake? Um, no

60 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:36 pm

[58] I think the Captain would rather have a private tour of Paisely Park with some of Prince's lady band members?

61 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:44 pm

[59] So would I!

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:45 pm

[59] I would ... die 4 ... 2???

63 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 3, 2014 8:54 pm

72 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2014 9:41 pm

80 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 4, 2014 9:49 am

Sterling should sing it Lennon-stylee:

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a Zelous guy
