"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Don’t Believe the Hype (It’s a Sequel)

Earlier in the week, Sean O’Sullivan handed the Yankees’ their ass while pitching for the Angels. Since, O’Sullivan has been traded to the Royals, and he’s on the hill again today. No offense to Mr. O’Sullivan, but I sure would expect the Bombers to come out a-sluggin’ this afternoon. Phil Hughes is on the hill for the Yanks, and it would be nice to see him have a good, strong, outing, now wouldn’t it?

Stay cool, cheer hard, eat well, and Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Real good feeling about today

2 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:05 pm

[1] Only if the big ol' boy O'Sullivan isn't making everyone look stupid flailing away at his off speed junk again. Go Yankees!

3 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:23 pm

You suck Kay.

4 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:27 pm

[3] As in a "good bunt" doesn't roll foul. Oy!

5 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:30 pm

[3] As in a ball in front of the warning track in right center field is not DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

6 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:35 pm

That was not encouraging Alex.

7 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:49 pm

Goddam it.

8 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:54 pm

Scott fucking Podsednik?

Hughes is just awful.

9 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 1:56 pm

That makes me feel better

10 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:01 pm

Think Jeter might be back? God I hope so.

11 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:05 pm

Come on, Swish.

12 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:05 pm

[11] was exasperated, not encouraging.

13 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:07 pm

Teixeira playing Brett Gardner lately

14 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:08 pm

[13] An RBI is an RBI.

15 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:08 pm

That'll do. Good rip.

16 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:09 pm

Beautiful.

I love the fact that A-Rod is hitting doubles when everyone is waiting for the HR.

17 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:10 pm

Robbie is going to put one in the right field seats.

18 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:10 pm

I love this lineup.

19 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:10 pm

Or not. Shit.

20 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:10 pm

[14] Not complaining. But by all rights he should have had infield singles two days in a row.

21 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:12 pm

[17] It was a crushable pitch. If he got another swing at that pitch, he would have put it in the RF seats.

22 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:12 pm

[20] Oh, right, that last out yesterday.

23 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:15 pm

Good lord. I just realized that Wilson Betamit is batting third.
Where's Billy Butler?

Good comeback, Phil.

24 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:18 pm

Okay, this is ridiculous.

25 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:25 pm

I want Dan Haren. What is the ceiling for guys like Nova and McCallister?

26 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:29 pm

Big day for Granderson. Maybe he's gonna have a big second half too

27 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:31 pm

WTF? This is Weird Home Run Day.

[25] I dunno, but I'm a little worried that Dan Haren would come to Yankee Stadium and turn into Livan Hernandez.

28 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 2:39 pm

Needed that easy inning. Now Phil can pitch the sixth. Who gets the seventh? D-Rob?

29 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:03 pm

me likey grandy going deep two times!

donde esta everyone?

30 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:09 pm

ah, rain delay - i get it...

31 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:12 pm

[30] Happy Umbrella Day.

32 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:15 pm

OK, time to get off the couch and bathe the dogs.

33 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:16 pm

[31] i don't own an umbrella. i guess i need one...

rain's coming down in philly, but they're still playing. per usual, it's going back & forth in miami (braves are there). in atlanta, it's alternating between bright 'n sunny and dark 'n overcast, remaining unbelievably hot 'n humid the entire time.

34 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:18 pm

we're gonna need 11 outs from the pen...

35 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:26 pm

[33] Today is Umbrella Day at YS. Brought to you by J&R Music and Computer World.

36 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:29 pm

[35] acha. j&r is pretty cool.

at least the game is official. though, i'm guessing it'll resume, at some point...

37 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:33 pm

melky with a 2-out double in teh 8th. nice ab. chipper matches him, tie game.

there's a ton of time left, but it would be sooo cool if it's the Yanks/Braves in the Serious, again. i moved here in '96. i would do my damnedest to go to a game (or two)...

38 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:51 pm

Shelley Duncan could have tied the game with a single in the eighth -- two out, runners on second and third. But he flied out.
Rays are big favorites now, I'd say. (Just in that game!)

39 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 3:58 pm

well, let's hope the tribe can make something happen vs. soriano. unlikely, but it's possible. you can't predict baseball, you know...

40 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:03 pm

576 homers for jim thome!

41 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:04 pm

[39] I guess you can, Suzyn.

42 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:05 pm

tampon won.

dice-klay vs. fister (chip caray's favorite pitcher) due to start in 5 mins...

43 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:07 pm

rickie weeks is having some week. that's now 5 homers since last sunday...

44 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:22 pm

I've got friends at the game calling me for info. Nothing yet, right?

45 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 4:33 pm

[44] Via Lohud:
Update, 4:15: It’s still raining pretty hard. Weather.com has a 55 percent chance of rain at 5, 35 percent at 6 and 10 percent at 7.

So maybe by 6pm they'll start again?

46 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:09 pm

Earlier, looks like. But they're starting to remove the tarp, so no doubt Mattpat's friends are aware of the situation.

47 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:29 pm

[46] I sent them a text anyway, just in case they were at the bar or whatever

48 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:32 pm

It's Booooooooooone...

49 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:36 pm

Oh yeah, he only had to get two outs. That was kind of disconcerting.

50 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:37 pm

999 for Robbie!

51 seamus   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:44 pm

gardner!

52 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:47 pm

Wow, Peña really smacked that one. Anywhere but straightaway that was gone.

53 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:52 pm

That kid wanted to go home three hours ago.

54 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:52 pm

Booooooooooooone.

55 PickNY   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:55 pm

Great game! It's over. Maybe Granderson is ready to start contributing this second half. He's been a great outfielder for us so far.

56 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:58 pm

Three hits for Derek.

57 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:59 pm

a 3-hit day for jeter! he's had a few of those in his career...

58 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 5:59 pm

Why the hell would anyone want Jake Westbrook?

59 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:00 pm

Great dodge by Swisher.

60 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:00 pm

Nother blown call. But I'll take it.

61 Just Fair   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:02 pm

Get 'r done, Alex!

62 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:02 pm

I'll take a 3 run jack here by Alex.

63 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:04 pm

Only A-Rod could have a 2-4, 2 RBI day with a double and let people down. :)

64 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:04 pm

I love the RBI singles, just fantastic. I can wait for 600.

65 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:05 pm

scoring from 2nd on an infield single with no error? please explain!

66 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:05 pm

Oh, man, I sound like Weeping.

67 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:05 pm

[64] I'd have liked him to do it in the Bronx though.

68 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:06 pm

[65] Sort of could have been an error.

69 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:06 pm

[68] ah, thanks.

70 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:09 pm

Good. Joba's in. Its been too long since Mo got a save

71 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:11 pm

Anyone else watch the HoF speeches during the delay? I thought they were all fantastic...the best group in recent memory.

72 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:11 pm

This kind of puts a damper on my good feelings.

73 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:12 pm

[72] Joba has been a season long damper. Instead of closing their eyes and holding their nose, the Yankees need to face reality with Joba.

Apparently, holding runners has become another part of the game that Joba isn't very good at.

74 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:12 pm

Why does Joba HAVE to be the eighth inning guy, Michael? We can't send him off to be Arizona's middle reliever of the future and find someone else to pitch the eighth inning?

75 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:13 pm

Boo and hate Joba all you want, but he doesn't put himself into these games.

76 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:13 pm

Scott Podesednik has hit two home runs in this game.

77 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:14 pm

[74] I really hope Joba wasn't a sticking point on Haren. That could be the Yankees last chance to get anything of real value for him in a trade.

78 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:14 pm

you've gotta be fucking kidding me!!!

hughes & joba giving up homeruns to scotty pods in the same game?!

christ.

79 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:14 pm

[76] I'm glad it's a memorable day for him.

80 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:14 pm

Is Dan Haren here yet???

81 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:14 pm

[75] Well, for fuck's sake, even i thought he could protect a four run lead with Getz, Podsednik and Kendall coming up. Now I have no idea how this inning will end.

82 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:15 pm

[80] Does Arizona still want Fat Farnsy after this?

83 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:16 pm

[81] I think he has given up 4 runs in four different outings, which is pretty bad for a short reliever.

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:16 pm

[82] Don't know, but I'd sure be willing to find out ...

85 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:17 pm

[79] personally, i'll never forget umbrella day.

when was that again?

86 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:17 pm

[83] He's awful. But this had "1 IP, 3H 1 ER 2 K" (ie. what passes for good Joba these days) written all over it.

87 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:17 pm

Can't wait to hear the latest Joba excuse after this game.

88 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:18 pm

[84] Hell, I hope Cashman is finishing the trade as we speak.

89 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:19 pm

[87] He wanted Scotty Pods to see what a two homer game is like.

90 The Hawk   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:21 pm

God forbid they trade Chamberlain for Dan Haren. He's untouchable, right??

91 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:21 pm

[86] That's pretty close.

[85] Maybe every day is Umbrella Day. How would you know? You'd have to ask.

92 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:21 pm

Can O'Neill hit Kay in the head now? If i hear "he's throwing hard!" one more time...

93 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:22 pm

[90] I hear Mo vetoed the trade. He's really worried about his Save totals, and (as we see) Joba is a great way to turn a blow-out into a Save situation.

94 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:24 pm

Haren to Anaheim for Saunders and prospects

so much for that

95 The Hawk   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:24 pm

I predict a sad end to Joba Chamberlain

96 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:25 pm

[94] Really? That sucks. I hope the prospects were good because Saunders is not.

97 The Hawk   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:25 pm

[94] Man, if Chamberlain was the sticking point, I will cry forever

98 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:26 pm

fuck. dan haren to the halos for joe saunders.

seriously.

99 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:26 pm

Only Brett Gardner could come up with a man on third and nobody out, and end up on second with the same runner on third and nobody out, and without even drawing the walk.

100 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:26 pm

[94] Get well soon Andy.

101 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:27 pm

Oh well, no Haren then.

Have to find another way to dump Joba ...

102 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:27 pm

We need another hit or walk or something...

103 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:27 pm

Dan Haren to the Angels. I really hope we didn't lose out on haren to keep Joba

104 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:27 pm

[94] beat me to it!

[97] i don't think he was. i read something today that we didn't wanna include betances and noesi, which is a good thing...

105 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:27 pm

1 more AB for A-Rod?

106 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:28 pm

Yes!
Now, no DP...

107 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:28 pm

Swisher just wasted all of Joba's hardwork.

108 The Hawk   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:28 pm

With Andy hurt and Hughes seemingly running out of gas, I've really changed my tune on acquiring a starting pitcher. I guess it's too late tho

109 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:29 pm

swish-a-rooney!

110 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:29 pm

[107] Mo is furious.

111 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:29 pm

[96, 97] Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez and a PTBNL.

It sucks, but we knew all along that Cashman wasn't going to include anyone from the ML roster so this doesn't come as a complete shock.

112 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:30 pm

i read something today that we didn’t wanna include betances and noesi, which is a good thing…

Considering what the D-backs actually got in return for Haren, I wouldn't put much into that speculation.

113 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:30 pm

I wonder if they held Jetes (or he held himself) deliberately to be sure A-Rod couldn't be IBBed.

114 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:30 pm

big g has a big ol' beard and it's quite gray!

115 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:31 pm

[108] Its gonna be Nate Robertson. I just know it.

116 The Hawk   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:31 pm

You know what they usually say about TRYING to hit a home run

117 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:31 pm

BOOOOOOOO!

118 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:31 pm

Three RBI for A-Rod and still a disappointment. :)

119 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:31 pm

That was a very bad plce to get hit...Yankees season could be on the brink.

120 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:32 pm

Unbelievable.
Well, that's okay. Goooooood Centaur.

121 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:33 pm

well, there's another way to get a ribbie...

woulda been *grand* to get #600 there.

122 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:33 pm

[111] Then he may have made a big mistake.

I hope this is precautionary.

123 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:33 pm

The Royals have been very loose coming up and in all series. If the first batter doesn't get a fastball in the ribs, I'll be surprised.

124 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:34 pm

[115] he'd make a good loogy, at this point, but thazzit...

125 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:35 pm

fwiw, sherman said adding haren now would affect our chances of going after lee in the offseason...

where was alex hit?

126 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:35 pm

Well, we got a milestone.

127 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:35 pm

We already had Teixeira against Texeira. I think we should have Damaso pinch hit here.

128 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:35 pm

1000 for Robbie!

Get that ball back.

129 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:35 pm

i love the double digits, but i'd be quite fine with adding more!

130 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:36 pm

[125] Left wrist.

131 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:36 pm

[124] I'd be stunned if they don't pick him up when he clears waivers.

132 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:36 pm

congrats, robbie!!! : )

133 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:37 pm

[130] thanks, man.

140 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:42 pm

The level of arrogance and/or stubborness in this organization is concerning. Why Girardi/Cashman remain committed to the likes of Mitre/Joba/Park is really hard to explain.

141 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:42 pm

If I were at the Stadium, I would be heading for the exit now. Why am I watching this?

142 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:43 pm

144 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:44 pm

what are the odds that Pepto gets the last out before the run scores?

145 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:44 pm

These things only happen to Jorge Posada.

146 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:45 pm

Uh, Michael ... Brian DePalma didn't have anything to do with The Godfather.

I think you meant to say Scarface.

If you're going to tell irrelevant stories to kill time, could you at least get them right???

147 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:45 pm

[145] what happened now?

157 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:48 pm

[152] Very good start to the bottom of the eighth, anyway...

159 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:49 pm

Kay, no one cares about this fucking boring story.

FTFY.

160 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:50 pm

Thelarmis, turn to the Red Sox, if you can.
Bases juiced, nobody out.

Okajima is having some trouble.

161 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:51 pm

great, scotty pods up for the hat trick.

it wouldn't surprise me...

162 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:51 pm

The only applicable rule I could quickly find says a runner may advance three bases without liability to be put out if:

a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person.

164 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:52 pm

[160] nice! just following the scoreboard. phils/rox game on tbs ended a few mins ago...

165 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:52 pm

Mariners rally to take the lead 3-2.

166 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:53 pm

Finally.

167 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:53 pm

Run Prevention!

This inning (in Seattle) is awesome!

Saunders reaches out and pokes an outside pitch through the second base hole, two runs. Then a safety squeeze, botched by Okajima. Three runs in, two on, still nobody out.

168 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:54 pm

[165] 4-2 now.
It's a laugher of an inning. Aardsma is up throwing, Save situation.

169 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:54 pm

scotty pods looks like moose in his gamecast photo. burrell does a bit, too.

170 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:54 pm

Why would Kim Jones ask Granderson about Arod's injury? That was a very odd question.

171 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:55 pm

Oh, man, another bunt (Wilson) up the third base line would have been another single, but it just rolled foul. But instead it's a line single! Nobody scores, but they're loaded again.

172 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:55 pm

[168] very very nice! i hope they continue to capitalize.

173 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:55 pm

[167] The squeeze! What a novel idea.

174 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:56 pm

Ichiro is up, he's 0 for 4 so far.

175 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:56 pm

hughes = 12-3

176 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:57 pm

[173] Shhhhhhh.
I don't want Girardi getting ideas.

177 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:57 pm

Jerry Remy is disgusted.

Ichiro is a .440 hitter with the bases loaded. He fouls one off, count goes to 2-2.

178 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:58 pm

[176] The squeeze is one idea he should use.

179 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:59 pm

Amazing double play! Youk fields a grounder, steps on first, throws home for the tag out.

Wow, nice play. Kind of ironic that Youk is the only really good fielder in this Run Prevention year.

180 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 6:59 pm

[178] Right, because you know he would use it to best advantage.

181 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:01 pm

Hey, no Morgan & Miller tonight on Sunday Night Baseball.

182 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:03 pm

I have a real bad feeling about this Haren trade. Not getting Lee and Haren in relatively high profile stories may force their hand to do something stupid.

183 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:05 pm

The package for Haren was very weak. If that PTBNL isn't significant, this was a salary dump.

184 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:06 pm

[183] they say it's a top prospect, but who knows. we'll see...

but, yeah, this was unexpected, to say the least...

185 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:12 pm

Aardsma strikes out Cameron to end the game.

Man, the Red Sox have real problems. They couldn't get a base runner against the M bullpen.

186 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:13 pm

Girardi says Arod is fine...it grazed his hand.

187 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:14 pm

seattle!!!

188 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:15 pm

Girardi says A-Rod is fine

189 TheDeadender   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:15 pm

[182] Is Sidney Ponson currently available?

190 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:19 pm

[189] You know, I'd find that alot funnier if we didn't already go that route.

Twice.

191 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:22 pm

[189] Don't give Cashman any ideas like that.

Glad that A-Rod's fine with a day off tomorrow.

192 jjmerlock   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:28 pm

No day off. Yanks are in a stretch of many games in not many more days. I think they get only two days off in more than a month of games.

193 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:32 pm

[192] You're right: two days off in the next 47 days.

194 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:35 pm

Haren to the Angels is nearly perfect. Texas and California will not both the playoffs and the Yankees are done with the Angels for the rest of the regular season, correct? Have they finished playing Texas as well? I'm also more convinced than ever that Cashman will not make a silly move door the sake of it, at least not yet.

195 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:38 pm

193) makes it harder to skip Hughes. Maybe the rain delay was a blessing in disguise...saved maybe a couple of innings.

196 TheDeadender   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:38 pm

[194] I hope you're right. It's just that time of year you start hearing the "catch lightening in a bottle" analogies banded around, or "low risk, high reward" etc.

197 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:41 pm

[194] I hope you're right. I don't think you are. I think by the end of the month we'll have Robertson, Westbroook or someone of that ilk.

198 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:42 pm

I have no problem whatsoever with low risk high reward moves, especially when they don't cost anything in terms of trading talent or pushing someone useful out of the lineup. So, replacing, say, Sergio Mitre with another spare part would bother me not one bit.

As for catching lightening in a bottle, those analogies spring more often when a team is desperate, which the Yankees are certainly not this year.

199 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:43 pm

197) again, if it costs nothing and only means that Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin or Chan Ho Park are eliminated, so be it...no problem.

200 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 7:51 pm

I never liked "Low risk high reward." If we trade, sign or otherwise acquire mediocre Player X, and he stinks it up in a pennant race and either causes the Yankees to lose a playoff spot or puts them in a poor spot for the post season, it was non worth the risk.

If you have settled for crap, just keep the crap you have. Teams seem more willing to jettison some spare part from the minor leagues than someone they actually traded for.

OK, quick quiz. Assuming there was a roster spot made available, who would you rather have starting in four days against the Rays: Mitre, Robertson, Westbrook or Nova?

202 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:01 pm

Is Robertson really a viable starting option?

203 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:02 pm

Oh, you meant Nate Robertson, the man I've been ranting about. Don't mind me.

...

Mitre or Nova for sure.

204 TheDeadender   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:07 pm

I'm inclined to agree with bringing up someone who has been throwing the ball well down in the minors. I can't agree with Mitre on account I watched the whole trainwreck yesterday. I mean, can a man really be that unlucky?!

205 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:08 pm

201) mitre and Westbrook and Robertson are basically interchangeable...look at their career ERA and ERA+ and WHIP. mitre is having a somewhat better year out of the pen, but last start reminded me of last year, which was about a sucky as all the other years he has pitched.

So by default it would be Nova. The added advantage of Nova is that he would knock someone off the roster, hopefully Chan Ho Park.

Of the other three nobodies, looking at their career numbers, I might go with Westbrook, maybe.

206 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:14 pm

[204] I'm not a Mitre fan, but I'd rather use the crap we have than someone elses.

[205] Nova is in first for me, but Mitre jumps ahead of the other two, because, like I said, we already have him. I just hate the idea of making a MOVE to get very little.

207 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:19 pm

205, 206) In all seriousness, this is a place where you and I have a fundamentally different philosophy. You would rather stick with the crap that you know than to make a move to get someone else's crap.

I have little patience for known crap, and would gladly keep trading the crap on the team for someone else's crap on the off chance that you...get lucky and cactch lightening in a bottle (to use the phrase).

In the end, it probably doesn't matter which way a team goes, beingatoent with crap on the team or taking chances on the crap fro mother teams.

208 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:21 pm

I do think we might be underrating Mitre because of that horrendous start. I don't say he's a good pitcher, but, as monkeypants says, basically interchangeable with Westbrook et al.

209 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:22 pm

By the way, gents, "lightening" is making things lighter. The stuff you try to catch in a bottle is "lightning".

210 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:36 pm

209) ouch. I should know better than that.

208) i have a hard time thinking positively about Mitre. His numbers for this season are significantly better than the rest of his career. Has he suddenly figured it out? Has Eiland worked his magic? Maybe. Or maybe his overall numberws have benefitted from some nice appearances in relief. Meanwhile, he has three starts and two of them were real stinkers. It's just more of the same from last season, at least it seems to me.

211 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:47 pm

[210] No, no, I think it's just a little... uh... less unlucky than most years.
My only real point is that he won't be noticeably worse than other cheap options. I won't be disappointed if we cut him.

New post up, by the way.

212 monkeypants   ~  Jul 25, 2010 8:54 pm

211) yeah, new post but no discussion there...yet.

Meanwhile, I'm watching Toronto-Detroit. I like watching baseball in big, pitchers parks.

Ok' time to relocate upstairs to the new thread.
