I saw a girl on the subway this morning looking at her IPAD. She looked so content. The light from the screen reflected on her face. It reminded me of an illustration of a kid looking at a secret treasure that glowed. I wondered what she was reading and almost envied her happiness but all I could think about what that she was a perfect mark to get robbed.
At 181 on the A, tons of robberies. iPhones and iPads mostly. I bring the kindle on the train, less demand.

When I look around on the subway, whether it into NYC to work or back home to Queens, I sometimes really beleive that people diplay their iPhones and iPads (especially those!) as more of a "ooh, look at my big fancy tech-toy - watch as I kick ass on Angry Birds" than using it for actual practical purposes.

the iPad is a great thing, but you gotta stow that shit on the subway.
There was a story this morning about a guy in Colorado whose iPhone and wallet were stolen out of a locker at a rec center. He logged on to a computer at the rec center and activated a special GPS app that located his iPhone at the Boulder Public Library. Then, he went to the library and used another app that activated a beeping alarm on his iPhone, revealing the redhanded culprit. It was a homeless dude. He almost stripped naked to prove he didn't have the phone on him, but it was in his backpack, along with the dude's wallet. Guy got everything back, and the homeless guy was arrested.
[2] Man, I lost that sense completely being here. More likely to die in another earthquake than have anyone rob you on the train here.
