This weekend, the Daily News reported that the Yankees’ plan for a new stadium is coming along nicely. The new park will be a few blocks away from where the stadium is now. If all goes according to plan, the new stadium could open in 2009.
Hey, so long as they stay in the Bronx…
1. Who knew that I'd been incorrectly calling it the "facade" my whole life?
Sounds great. I love YS and all, but after visiting some of the new parks like Coors and PNC, the fact that you can't see the field from the concession area and concourses drives me nuts.
2. Is there anybody on the current roster who will see the new stadium in Yankee pinstripes? If so, who are the most likely? Jeter and A-Rod in their declining years? Maybe Matsui?
I say "no" on Torre and the coaching staff.
3. It sounds like they're doing a lot of things right, restoring the frieze, making it look like the original stadium, but incorporating the advantages of the newest parks (sitelines from concession, roomier concourses etc.). Here's hoping they replicate the shape of the field as well. I'd also like to see them return to the black and sea foam of the original stadium, I'm tired of the royal blue. I just wish they'd build it on the same site. As a season ticket holder, I'd tolerate two more seasons at Shea to keep the stadium in the same location, with the court house visible beyond centerfield and the elevated 4 train running behind right field etc. I also fear ticket prices at the new park.
4. Going to games in 2006, 2007, and 2008 will be a nightmare. It's already hard to get around in the Bronx these days (since NY started drawing 3+ mill a year). Having a monster size construction site across the street during game days is not going to help.
People will have to get to games 3 hours early to ensure they're not late.
5. To me and my family, the Courthouse is as important as the frieze/facade or anything else. I'd hate to lose the sight of it, and the sense of place it provides.
While we're at it, let's get those sausages they sell at Shea.
6. Rich, I don't see any of the current Yankees on the 2009 team, should the new park open then. Well, maybe Jeter, if his career lasts that long, and if the Yanks decide he's going to go out like Don Mattingly, a lifelong Yankee. Torre will be long gone. Rodriguez could concievably be around, but I have a feeling he'll be long gone by then too.
Hey, after years of threats of relocating to New Jersey, I'm just happy that the new joint will be in the same neighbhorhood.

9. Some things I'd like to see end in the new YS (if not right now):
- YMCA
- Cotton Eye Joe
- Michael Kay
- Suzyn Waldman
10. My only issue is there will be 10% fewer seats in the new house. Ticket prices will spike up.
Many of the current Yankees will see pinstripes in the new house...at old timers day!
11. If you are going to spend 80m on a new stadium, for New York, for the Yankees, isn't 50k seats a little light. I'd say they may lose hundreds of thousands a year due to not enough seating. Any thoughts?

14. As long as they really do replicate the dimensions and bring Death Valley back, I don't much care about the rest. Since it's going to have the latest amenities, the reduction in seats isn't a problem for me. The current Yankee Stadium isn't a very good place to watch a game (except it's where the Yankees play) compared to the newer parks.
As to the luxury boxes, they're a requirement in this era. That money is a huge part of what gets parks like this built.

16. What I like is that the money for the stadium itself is coming from the Yankees, and not taxpayers.

21. Is it such a stretch to imagine Jeter on the 2009 team? He'll be 34 and certainly still able to contribute. Hell, he'd probably still be one of the youngest members of the team.
22. I'm hoping that there's some more to the stadium, like high definition screens for the scoreboards and all, and high tech sound system. Also, would it be too much to ask for free WiFi like in San Fran's ballpark?
