Step Right Up

phughes

The talented Mr. Hughes is back and will take the hill for the Yanks tonight against the Tigers.

Rah Rah Ree, Kick ‘Em in the Kneee/
Rah Rah Ras, Kick ‘Em in the Other Knee

Maybe this will satisfy Allen Barra. And maybe you can snap your fingers to this:

Dag, what a mug.  But the song is priceless.

Go Phil Hughes! I hope he does so well, he never gets sent down again!

: )

2 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Apr 28, 2009 6:00 pm

Nitpick on Barra: It was Berroa at third base, not Ransom.

3 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 6:41 pm

I've been jockin' Phil for a solid 3 years now...don't let me down kid.

4 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 6:46 pm

[3] Yeah! What you said!

5 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:05 pm

Need a lift tonight from Boy Wonder, I predict a no-no and 4 home runs from Tex!

6 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:05 pm

I'm actually excited/nervous for this start.

7 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:10 pm

1 2 3 , getting used to that.

8 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:11 pm

I'm not expecting anything from the Yanks offense, but I have high hopes for Mr. Hughes

9 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:11 pm

[7] sigh.. Jackson no-no and 4 dinges from Cabrera?

10 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:14 pm

that curve not a strike??

11 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:15 pm

Nice start Phil!

phil showing 94 on the DET gun

13 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:16 pm

I really hope 92 isn't his ceiling....

14 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:17 pm

I'm liking this...

15 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:17 pm

[13] So what if it is? I've never seen so much obsession over a player's velocity. LOTS of very good pitchers throw a FB that sits 92-93.

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:18 pm

Phil brought his Uncle Charlie to the park tonite!

DET announcer, "locked up his bowels on that one!"

phil seems to have his cruve early tonight

18 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:19 pm

Hey look, a #b who can field!

19 ms october   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:19 pm

22 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:20 pm

I am way too emotionally invested in Phil and Marty Brodeur tonight

23 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:20 pm

Wow! Welcome back Phil! You go wit yo nasty Yacker!

: )

24 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:26 pm

when did Edwin Jackson become J.R. Richard?? hit this guy already!

25 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:28 pm

Is frigging Edwin Jackson now just too good to hit too?

26 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:29 pm

Cabrera is only 25.. amazing

27 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:30 pm

Hey, Team! What a pleasant surprise to hear everyone so, shall we say, optimistic!

28 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:31 pm

liking that cutter Phil's been throwing

29 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:31 pm

I love that cutter. So pretty.

30 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:32 pm

Hughes aint getting much

31 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:32 pm

Seems like a tight strike zone, eh?

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:32 pm

that curve fool you too, blue?

33 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:32 pm

And yet he makes due

34 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:32 pm

With Joyce behind the plate, Hughes might be on a no-hit pace.

35 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:34 pm

Phranchise

36 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:35 pm

[34] Wait, what?

37 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:36 pm

This program runs so much more smoothly without Michael Kay.

38 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:36 pm

That cutter REALLY helps his FB, which is actually popping quite nicely today. When he shows that control of the FB to both sides, flashes the cutter, and then drops in the honker, he looks like the real deal...

39 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:36 pm

[36] Last night's umpire had such a wide strike zone, that Hughes might be able to throw a no-hitter with the stuff he has shown so far.

40 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:37 pm

There is some real a-clown behind HP or near the booth, huh?

41 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:37 pm

[36] Joyce had a huge strikezone last night

42 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:37 pm

Yay!

43 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:37 pm

[39] Ok, gotcha. Didn't realize that was referring to last night! Was gonna say, today's ump has a TIGHT zone...

44 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:38 pm

That AB is why Melky should play over Gardner...Melky can hit a fastball down the middle. It might seem like a pedestrian skill for a major leaguer, but Gardner can not do it.

45 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:39 pm

[37] Agreed, Cone and Singleton are good. Why does Kay always skip Detroit?

46 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:40 pm

Not sure why Molina isn't bunting there...that's an example of Girardi sitting on his hands and not trying to make the best of his team's weakness.

47 Diane Firstman   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:41 pm

[45]

Perhaps there is an outstanding arrest warrant for him in Detroit Rock City, from his wild days being a KISS groupie?

48 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:42 pm

God I wish I could get my hands on that jerk yelling "Swing" every at bat...

49 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:43 pm

[45] Well, I wouldn't got to Detroit if I didn't have to either.

That being said, I wish he would avoid more cities. This game would be insufferable if we had to repeatedly hear that Michael Kay, his own complicated formula, determined that it was impossible for the Yankees to lose five games in a row.

50 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:43 pm

ummm Seton Hall Prep is not "around Morristown" Coney, my alma mater is in the Newark archdiocese and damn proud of it.

51 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:44 pm

Having Phil and Joba throw good back to back to starts would do wonders for all psyches. C'mon O! Pull your weight.

52 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:45 pm

The San Diego Chicken once brought an eye-chart out to the umpire?? Love those stories..

53 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:45 pm

Not to harp on the point, but it would have been nice to see Girardi be proactive and move Melky up to 2B. Now, the Yankees need two hits to score.

54 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:47 pm

[47] That's certainly the closest Michael Kay would ever get to something so named, Diane!

Kiss, I mean...

55 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:49 pm

[53] I just get worried that he's going to do something asinine when he decides to be proactive. I'd rather he sit on his hands than send Wilson Betemit in to pinch run for the trail runner (and then not put on a play) or send Brett Gardner in to pinch hit.

56 Diane Firstman   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:51 pm

Serious question .... just how bad are the seats in section 405 (the last section of grandstand in RF).

My job is offering seats there for $13.50 rather than $22 or whatever.

57 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:52 pm

[55] Bunting with Molina against a RH pitcher though is a very high percentage move. Little things can mean a lot, especially when a team is struggling. The Yankees need this game badly and I'd like to think Girardi would be a little more involved.

58 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:53 pm

Wow, how was that not a strike?

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:53 pm

62 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:54 pm

Woah, that was an evil evil curveball

63 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:54 pm

[56] I'm sitting in Section 405 for a Mets game in the beginning of June, Diane. No idea on the quality though

64 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:54 pm

Wow, that curveball might have been off for location, but it had some DROP

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:54 pm

YAKKER!

damn, i heart this hughes!

66 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:55 pm

[57] I'd be afraid he'd put the hit and run on.

67 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:55 pm

Red Sox are beating up on Cleveland...the Yanks had two great chances to derail the train, but blew them both. The Red Sox can be streaky, so the Yankees may have lost an opportunity to stop them cold. Those two losses could really haunt this team for a while.

68 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:55 pm

Any news any Phil's skull and crossbone glasses. : ) Maybe contacts? Or Lasik?

69 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:56 pm

God this ump is killing me!

Cleveland doing us no favors, down to Boston 5-1 middle 2nd

72 randym77   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:57 pm

The strike zone is the size of a postage stamp.

73 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:58 pm

Granderson caused Sabathia to lose concentration last night...I hope Hughes doesnt make the same mistake.

74 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:59 pm

Hughes just needs to accept that the zone is tiny and continue to work the corners, dont give in

75 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 7:59 pm

Attaboy Phil! Lotta pitches, but hopefully he can have a quick inning and get through 6

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:00 pm

Phew.

got a little sloppy there.

but that cutter is really going to be a weapon for him.

77 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:00 pm

[68] The thing I'll always remember about Phil Hughes' glasses is he got crossed up like six times with that Chris Stewart, and it was determined that Hughes was blind.

They took Hughes out of the game. and Stewart got crossed up like four more times that game.

78 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:01 pm

Glad to have Maggs leading off now!

Whew!

79 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:03 pm

Is there a reason the Yankees can't hit Edwin Jackson?

80 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:04 pm

FUCK you blue.

Jackson gets the high curve?!?!?

81 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:04 pm

[79] They suck?

82 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:05 pm

[77] Yeesh. Thanks for the reminder. That was some mickey-mouse bull. Let's hope Chris is not handling any fragile materials any time soon.

he'll always be "Dodgers Superprospect Edwin Jackson" to me

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:09 pm

[79] he's maturing into the pitcher the Dodger's thought they had?

He's got great stuff and he's pitching well tonite.

meanwhile, robbie's hanging tough ...

85 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:09 pm

[81] I temporarily forgot.

86 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:09 pm

I feel like Jackson ALWAYS does this to the Yanks in April...

87 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:09 pm

[84] These people always seem to mature against the Yankees.

88 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:10 pm

[80] Maybe Hughes dumped Derryl Cousins' daughter or something...

: /

89 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:10 pm

I don't think I've ever seen that before.

90 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:10 pm

My patience is starting to wear with Teixeira. It started tonight.

***

The thing about Melky is that though he looks terrible at times, he also can look competent, even ... good. Gardner on the other hand looks like he got lucky even when he does get a hit.

91 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:11 pm

Not being able to stand up should an error. Seriously.

93 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:12 pm

great, great AB by Cano though. 12 pitches

94 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:14 pm

[90] He isn't getting any pitches though. Other than Cano, there is no one else in this lineup that pitchers probably fear close to as much.

"Tale of Two Strike Zones" tonite

no way Phil gets that strike 2 call.

102 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:16 pm

Wouldn't it be poetic if the Yankees finally start hitting with men on base when A-Rod shows up?

103 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:16 pm

Melky always manages to remind you of why he is Melky

104 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:17 pm

This game feels as if the Yankees are slowly moving their way toward a loss...almost like they are walking the plank.

105 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:17 pm

[100] I disagree. Sometimes a walk is as good as a hit, sometimes it's not. For instance if there's a man on third.

***

Melky isn't much of a hitter with two strikes. He'll swing at anything.

106 nyyjim   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:18 pm

The only surprise with that at bat was that he didn't slide into first base.

107 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:20 pm

Is that a two-seam fastball from Hughes? Looks pretty nice!

[107] cutter

110 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:21 pm

[107] Yep....with movement.

Hughes hitting batters is not a bad thing...it indicates both his movement and his willingness to throw inside...two things that were lacking last year.

111 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:21 pm

[105] I'd say that a walk is actually almost never as good as a hit.

112 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:21 pm

[109] But it's riding in on right handers, like the one that got Mags to pop-up. Wouldn't a cutter break the other direction?

113 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:21 pm

[102] How I pray A Rod is the "comes through pretty often actually" A Rod of 2007. I'm not saying he needs to produce at quite that level, but I don't look forward to him coming to the plate with runners on, getting down two strikes before he's in the box, then swing and miss at a pitch low and outside.

114 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:21 pm

I really wish Cone was in the booth for every game, completely enjoyable

115 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:22 pm

116 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:23 pm

gah!

nice hitter by guillen.

117 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:23 pm

Cone is a good listen but he growls a lot and if you didn't notice and now you do I apologize. Cause it will bug ya.

118 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:24 pm

Now we see how Hughes handles some adversity...hopefully it's better than the team as a whole has done of late.

119 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:25 pm

[115] The pitch that jammed Ordonez on the foul pop. The 1-1 pitch to Laird was also similar. I'm mainly confused because Cone keeps calling it a 4-seam fastball, which I always understood was the straight one, while the one with a left-to-right movement (from a righty) was a 2-seamer.

120 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:26 pm

pitch count rising here..will he make it past the 5th?

121 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:28 pm

128 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:30 pm

Very good (and smart) job of pitching by Hughes.

129 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:31 pm

That's 71 pitches through four innings. Was anything said about a pitch count? Otherwise, I think he can go 6 if he's allowed to get to 100/110 pitches or so.

130 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:31 pm

eek.

71 pitches through 4.

131 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:32 pm

3rd inning and Vinnie Chulk is pitching to Dusty McBarney..the Indians are awful.

132 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:33 pm

[130] At least 30 of those were due to several shitty non-calls...

133 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:34 pm

[119] The 4-seamer is more straight, while the 2-seamer either moves left-right or down. It def. looks like Hughes is throwing a 2-seamer.

147 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:41 pm

If Hughes pitches very well and Wang returns healthy, do you move Joba back to the bullpen or send Hughes back down?

148 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:42 pm

Shades of Rivera with that cutter.

149 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:43 pm

[147] You joking? how do you send Hughes back down now??

150 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:43 pm

That cutter is really moving...I mean almost Mo-like movement. If he commands that to go along with his fastball and nasty hook Hughes could become what we were hoping.

151 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:43 pm

That was a SICK pitch..

152 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:44 pm

[149] I was asking a serious question...if both of my premises are accepted, it becomes Joba vs. Phil for the 5th slot.

153 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:44 pm

[148] What you said!

154 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:44 pm

That's 81 pitches through five innings. Now would be a good time to score some runs, so Girardi doesn't get tempted to go to the B-team bullpen guys in a tie on the road. Not that I'm very sure who the A-team bullpen guys might be.

155 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:45 pm

[147]

make Phil and Joba co-starters in the 5th spot?

they split 5/4 and 4/5?

i dunno, i fear if Joba goes to the bullpen, he'll never come back and i don't want that

meanwhile ... NICE efficient inning by Phil there

156 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:45 pm

[152] Why not put Wang in the pen till he recovers? And/Or until Joba shows he can't be a full-time starter..still a possibility. Hughes has to stay up, nothing left for him to prove in AAA

157 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:46 pm

[147] You make Pettitte the long man...

158 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:46 pm

[152] Well, I'm not sure about one of the premises, that Wang will definitely return to prominence. My guess is that they'll bring him off the DL sometime in May and he'll have another couple bad starts, while Hughes goes back to AAA. Then Wang is DFA'd while Hughes come up for good?

[157] Pettitte has pitched well. He has also never relieved. What's more, you signed him to an incentive laden deal based on being a starter. Moving him to the pen for anything other than poor performance would be incredibly unfair.

172 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:54 pm

If Hughes can pitch like this, put Joba in the pen. They desperately need him and I don't think he'll be any better than Hughes anyway. If.

Joba's mojo is noticeably weaker as a starter. It'd be sweet if that changes, but I'm not counting on it.

173 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:54 pm

[161] He has been taking those picthes and walking...now, it seems like he is trying to do too much, which is never a good thing. Someone on this offense needs to step up.

174 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:56 pm

[170] I'm probably just bitter about the way Wang has shaped the Yankees' season, by overtaxing the bullpen, costing quite a few games. I was just trying to come up with a scenario in which Joba and Hughes get to both be in the rotation.

179 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:58 pm

[166] Pettitte's contract is based on innings, not starts, right? It's the perfect role for him. Also, @ only $5M base, you don't have a BP arm making $10M or $16M as he wanted. Additionally, he doesn't get 200 innings out of the BP, making him fresher down the stretch. Lastly, Hughes became the odd man out with the Pettitte signing. If Hughes continues with this stuff, clearly he's that much better than Pettitte, and I wager nobody steals home on Hughes...

180 randym77   ~  Apr 28, 2009 8:59 pm

I think it's way too early to worry about moving Joba or Wang or Pettitte to the pen. Hughes pitched a gem before - that bid for a no-hitter that ended in injury. Can't read too much into one game.

And for all we know, someone else will be on the DL by the time Wang's ready to return. Too many good starting pitchers is a problem I'd love to have.

It's really interesting, with all the new movement on Hughes' cutter and 2-seamer, there's less of an emphasis on his velocity. Everyone was concerned about it last year, but he's having a lot of success not throwing much harder than 91, 92.

205 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:12 pm

There's no way you return Joba to the pen. Hughes goes back down and is on call for when Burnett or Pettitte go down. Joba needs to get out there and build innings and work through it (assuming he isn't hurt of course).

Meanwhile, I tell Hughes good job and bring in the pen, no?

2nd and 3rd..one out. inevitable pop-up and K now?

214 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:17 pm

[207] True. By Bill James' "Game Score," those two are the tops for Yankees starters this year. CC's game had the 7.2 innings and six strikeouts, also six hits. AJ had 9 strikeouts in 8 innings, but gave up two runs. I would have to do the math but I think Hughes would top the list if he finished the 7th with no more baserunners.

[182] "If the Yankees demoted him while he was pitching well it would be very bad form."

Almost as bad as the "form" he showed at The Fens, perhaps?

The Yankees do not owe Andy Pettitte anything towards his 200 innings threshold for him to "earn" the extra $5M. Given his "productivity" during the last half of '08 after he "hit the wall," I'd rather he be the long man to conserve his use for down the stretch, should the Yankees be "burdened" with six starters upon Wang's return, than be 2-9 again. Arguably, that cost them their trip to the playoffs.

I mean, we're talking about a guy who bailed on the team after '03, to be with "his buddy" Clemens, remember? Such loyalty as you suggest, while it may be appropriate, doesn't exist for Andy Pettitte (see also Bernie Williams' "dismissal" in which they "remembered" him using Boston to jack up his price years ago).

238 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:21 pm

[235] Good point.

239 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:21 pm

I've been waiting to go for a run until after Melancon pitches since I haven't seen him yet for what seems like eternity!

294 ms october   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:44 pm

wow, molina?!?!

yanks needed this inning/game badly.

[286] definitely not wise - i was alwyas taught to drive to the basket with about 8-10 seconds left; not sure why someone with bad hamstrings wants to take a fall away jumper there

295 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:44 pm

[290] Thank God the Yanks are on the correct end this time, Zack!

: O

296 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:44 pm

[292] You can thank Cano for that...he probably saw about 30 pitches all by himself.

297 Raf   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:45 pm

[286] That was on Gordon, he could've taken it to the basket try and draw a foul

298 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:45 pm

Ok, over/under on # of pitches for Melancon this inning? I say 10...

299 randym77   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:45 pm

Holy cats. Even Berroa got a hit.

300 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:46 pm

[291] Yeah the blue light law is only for Sundays, but it will still be kind of weird to be drinking a beer at 11:05 AM on a Wednesday.

[300] Psh, rookie :)

302 tommyl   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:47 pm

And the Indians battle back to tie it. Man, good night so far.

303 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:47 pm

[297] Or at least leave a few seconds for an offensive rebound.

304 ms october   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:48 pm

i don't think i will ever naturally get the pronunciation of melancon

305 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:48 pm

[275] Not watching or listening?

watching the mlb.tv feed, which has the DET announcers

who are pronouncing it Mel-AN-CON.

306 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:49 pm

[304] You mean the pronunciacon?

307 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:49 pm

[305] Ahhh. Do you have premium? YOu can choose with that, which is great!

308 mehmattski   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:50 pm

Wow, Jeter didn't try the jump throw, he actually set his feet.

309 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:50 pm

So much for my over/under

310 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

[296] That's right, 22 pitches in just those two at bats. Cano 2.0 is a serious improvement in all kinds of ways!

[306] Oh, bravo, sir!

311 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

And I thought Hughes had a great curve ball!

312 zack   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

Well I was close!

313 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

That was real perty-like.

314 ms october   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

so far so good

315 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:51 pm

You don't even need premium. I have regular mlb.tv and I'm listening to Kenny and Cone.

316 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:52 pm

[305] i do, but then i'm watching at least 1-2 batters behind the chatting.

317 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:52 pm

I saw these two guys pitch at McCoy Stadium last year, in Pawtucket. Hughes was so-so, Melancon was great.

318 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:53 pm

[316] I don't understand that. My feed is not behind at all. I've heard people complain about that several times but never experienced it yet.

319 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:55 pm

I am quite happy about this pitching effort. And to think Hughes had problems with Detroit in the past.

320 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:58 pm

[318]

depends on the game and inning and the feed ... sometimes 1 feed will be a couple of pitches behind and the other nearly 2 batters behind ... it's weird.

321 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 9:58 pm

Huges, Joba, Burnett, Pettitte, Sabathia, Rinse. Repeat.
Glad Hideki's got a leg up on that fluid.

322 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:00 pm

[321] Hughes was huge, but that's not what I meant. : /

323 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:01 pm

LOL @ Francesa, who said today, "You can take Hughes' AAA numbers and throw them out. It's all zeros now." He's a regular Nostradamus... this time...

: )

324 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:02 pm

what a great way to start the spring holidays here! Hoping my beloved Yakult Swallows will follow the Yankees lead and get the big W tonight.

325 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:07 pm

That hit reminds me: I just loved that play by Pena early in the game, diving stop, casually stood, gunned down Mags at first.

326 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:08 pm

Hmmm.
What if the rest of the game is scoreless. This might very well be the first game in history all of whose half inning scores end with a "0"!

327 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:08 pm

[325] on a rope, hit Tex right in the chest

328 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:11 pm

I have no problem at all with Pena remaining on the roster as the utility infielder.

329 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:14 pm

STICK!!!

330 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:14 pm

Same here (about Pena).
Also, I really like Juan RIncon. On other teams, I mean.

331 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:15 pm

in other news I'm never watching hockey ever again

332 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:15 pm

I have a gift for Banter. Seems like a good time as any to reveal it, what with the score and... really, Molina with the grande?? >;)

333 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:16 pm

Uh.
Was Cone serious? The official scorers say it's 8 unearned runs for the Yankees, but all of them charged as earned to the Tiger bullpen? That makes no sense. Was it a joke?

334 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:17 pm

Berroa still sucks.

335 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:18 pm

[332] Hey man, is that your film?? 5 stars! "It is high..it is far..."

336 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:18 pm

Gosh, Chyll, is that actually John Sterling????

337 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:19 pm

[331] Rangers blew it, eh? Blame Dolan...

338 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:20 pm

[337] they did, but I'm a Devils fan. That would be the Devils who gave up 2 goals in the last 90 seconds to lose Game 7 at home....those Devils.

339 Just Fair   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:21 pm

[332] You just can't predict YouTube.

340 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:22 pm

[339] It always begins with a walk from the subway.

341 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:22 pm

That's why I take statistics in this game with a grain of salt. Between the ridiculousness of "official" scoring and umpires' retarded strike zones, they make shit up as the games go along... rendering stats hardly a true indication of what actually happens from day to day.

342 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:24 pm

[332] Thanks Will! Nice "slower" version of Ren's laugh (from Ren and Stimpy) at the end...

343 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:25 pm

Feel-good game of the year. Hughes really delivered. I hope this gooses the rest of the rotation.

Joba?

344 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:25 pm

I just realized that Joba looks like Jonathan Winters. Is that obvious?

345 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:26 pm

Gameday has all eleven runs earned. I wonder what Cone was talking about.

346 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:26 pm

[335] Yep. Cool!

[336] Haa! That didn't occur to me! >;)

347 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:28 pm

[344] Yep.

348 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:30 pm

Why did it seem like Veras has an aversion to shutouts? Did he break out in hives yet or what?

349 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:30 pm

MLB Box has all but two Yankee runs as earned with two of the four allowed by Perry as unearned...

350 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:32 pm

[349] Interesting.
Maybe a decision was changed and only one of the two (mlb box; gameday) has it registered.
Not that it makes any difference -- as you say, official scoring is bullshit anyway.

351 PJ   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:43 pm

I sure hope this great start by Phil gets the proverbial ball rolling right up into Alex's return. Joba tomorrow for the series win!

G'night everyone!

: )

352 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:48 pm

Watching this on MLB.TV timeshifted, so just finished with the 10-run inning and Melancon is on. What a hell of a game. Phil was philthy, and the offense shook off their slump. Melancon now delivering a groundball as expected. Does he remind anyone of Wetteland from the back when he's standing on the mound?

353 RIYank   ~  Apr 28, 2009 10:53 pm

[352] Maybe a little. Melancon is such a sweet kid that it's hard for me to see resemblance to Wetteland, to be honest -- but that's a cognitive bias, so you're probably right.

Weird game in Cleveland. The line score (near the end of the eighth inning now) is remarkably symmetric.

354 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 28, 2009 11:05 pm

Much better.

355 The Hawk   ~  Apr 28, 2009 11:30 pm

And the Sox go down. Nice way to ice the cake.
