"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Twice as Nice

We’re all waiting for the Yanks to go on a run. That would entail winning a mess-o-games in a row. They’d have to start with tonight. Tonight would be nice.

Roy Halladay dominated the Yanks two nights ago. Time for CC Sabathia to return the favor. His last start was stellar. He’s expected to be on par tonight.

C’mon, big fella. You’re the Rock.

Going to crack a can of CC Lemon on the way to the office, expect to log in to the 5th inning and see a No-No from the big guy!

2 Cliff Corcoran   ~  May 14, 2009 6:59 pm

Pre-emptive no-hitter jinx? Why, Jazz, why?

3 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:07 pm

Is it me or does Tallet look like Nelly?

4 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 7:12 pm

[3] the jays have a bunch of extremely weird/ugly looking guys.
thankfully they have one that is not weird.

anyway - wth is melky sitting for gardner?

5 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:15 pm

[4] "Gardy" had a better night last night than Melky?

*shrug*

6 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 7:28 pm

Holy Canoli!

7 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 7:29 pm

[4] and a bunch of them are creepy "gingers".

[5] if you're gonna sit melky, facing a lefty is the time to do it.

8 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 7:31 pm

for Nick Swisher, right now, a walk is as good as a hit ...

9 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:35 pm

Filth, flarn, flarn, and filth!

10 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:41 pm

Was it something I said?

: )

11 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 7:41 pm

[9]?

12 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 7:43 pm

Great game in LA. 4-4 in the twelfth. Lots of interesting stuff, but one delightful fact: Big Papi is 0 for 7 and has left twelve men on base. Probably the worst baseball day of his life.

13 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:44 pm

[11] That is Eddie Murphy quoting Bill Cosby who called him to chastise him for being so vulgar during his stand up acts...

Since we cannot swear here any more, that's also what I'm reduced to...

: /

14 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 7:46 pm

[13] well, i figured it for cursing, was just wondering what it was about.

15 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:48 pm

[14] Ah... I was upset that they let Tallet off the hook in the first, and their defense in the first was, shall we say, "shaky."

16 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 7:49 pm

sawx lose

17 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:50 pm

[16] That's delightful indeed!

: )

18 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 7:53 pm

since there's nothing explicitly written in the commenting guidlines about cursing I'll say it...

"I don't use any filth flarn filth flarn filth in my act, fuck you I'm offended you called me"

19 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 7:57 pm

Oh so we can curse?

That's a "horseshit" of a different color!

: )

20 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 7:59 pm

I think we can agree that overdoing it is wrong, but if it is a) done in the heat of something big happening in the game, or b) an Eddie Murphy quote it can be acceptable

21 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 8:05 pm

Since our esteemed host Alex is such a moralist, I'll do my best with respect to that context!

Being such a fan of notoriously vulgar comedians as Carlin, Pryor, Murphy, Griffin, Cho, Black, Williams, Goldberg, Maher, etc., it's not going to be easy, especially if the Yankees play like assclowns!

: )

22 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 8:09 pm

Crud.

23 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:15 pm

cricket....cricket

25 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:18 pm

Okay, its time to start hitting Ron Jeremy here.

26 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 8:19 pm

this isn't cute anymore

27 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:19 pm

Skinny Ron Jeremy. Not quite as ugly as yesterday's starter though.

28 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:21 pm

These guys got dinner plans or something

29 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:25 pm

[27] Yesterday's starter was the most generic looking human being I've ever seen. He was the blank Create a Wrestler template in a wrestling video game.

30 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:26 pm

This is a must win game. I'm not sure the Yankees understand this.

31 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 8:29 pm

Wow. Brett doing his Melky imitation.

32 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:30 pm

We really shouldn't be giving up hits to John McDonald.

33 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 8:31 pm

Well, Gardner earns his keep right there.

34 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:32 pm

Well, alright. Now, offense, do that hitting thing. Like now.

35 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 14, 2009 8:32 pm

[2] Remember, I am checking in from the "future" (Fri. morning here) so according to Doc Brown's theory of the space-time continuium, I can't retroactively jinx anyone..oh wait, we're losing 2-1?? Apologies all around..

36 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 8:32 pm

It’s very disappointing to see the Yankees not be able to take advantage of another very favorable pitching match-up. There’s still some time left, but these are the kind of games you need to take an early lead of 2 or 3 runs and then cruise. If you can’t win these games, then it’s really going to be a difficult to sustain any kind of streak.

37 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:33 pm

This team is doomed.

38 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:40 pm

ITS BRIAN FUCKING TALLET.

39 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:40 pm

Dang. Sorry about that

40 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 8:41 pm

Cano is pulling off and hitting grounders again...that's a bad sign. Very frustrating team for the second straight year.

41 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:42 pm

This was probably the biggest game of the year to this point, and to say this team blew it is a massive understatement.

42 tocho   ~  May 14, 2009 8:45 pm

[40] Agreed. Very frustrating. You don't know what you have.

They can win a nice game one day and then look completely lost or without any motivation the next... I want to quit on them several times during the season...

The fact is that they have tons of talent but for some reason they just cannot pull together consistently.

43 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 8:46 pm

[41] To be honest, I can't say this is really a big game because nothing leading into this game suggested a turnaround. I am not sure we should be surprised by the continuation of what has really been a long term trend. Still, it is very frustrating and disappointing.

44 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 8:50 pm

[42] That's the killer...even with the injuries, they do have tons of talent. You could accept this kind of play from a team that doesn't have the horses. The Yankees do have them...they just don't seem to go to the post every night.

45 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 8:50 pm

Did Derek Jeter just get to a ball diving to his left? Is the world coming to an end?

46 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 8:51 pm

[45] He did. And then I believe the ump blew a call in our favor.

47 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 8:54 pm

gotta turn that into a leadoff double

48 tocho   ~  May 14, 2009 8:56 pm

I think its the manager's responsibility to bring out the best of the players he has available.

Girardi did a great job with the bullpen last year. But he failed to do it with the offense. He mainly failed with Cano and Melky and that's starting to show again this season.

49 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:57 pm

This is fun

50 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 8:57 pm

A PLAY!

51 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 8:57 pm

Small ball.
I hate small ball, except when we try it and it works.

52 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 8:57 pm

I want Cerevelli as the backup when Posada's healthy...small sample size be damned

53 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:58 pm

Again it's the midgets getting things going

54 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 8:59 pm

[52] Yeah, I was thinking that. It might be partly because he's so damn fast for a catcher, he's athletic, you don't get that feeling that he's useless in most aspects of the game, they way you feel with, you know, Cash, or whoever.

55 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 8:59 pm

I think we'll win this game, but It should never have been this close.

56 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 9:00 pm

[54] and it's not like he seems to have any less of an arm than Molina from the throws he's made so far ...

63 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 9:03 pm

c'mon, need to get another one here ...

64 OldYanksFan   ~  May 14, 2009 9:03 pm

[52] Agree. For someone who has no AAA experience and has a .580 OPS this year, I'm very impressed. This kid is mature and certainly has the potential to get better.

Same with Pena. He might never have an OPS above .700, but has a great glove and seems to handle the pressure of LMB and NY very well.

Even if they nevermake it as a started, they are both valuable on the JDM bench.

65 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 9:03 pm

why the hell is Gaston thinking bunt?

66 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 9:03 pm

Now lets get the lead here please. Two on and Damon, Tex and Alex due up. Lets go!

67 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 9:04 pm

That was so low.

68 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 14, 2009 9:04 pm

Tex looks a bit like a jock-version of Judd Nelson.

69 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 9:08 pm

70 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 9:09 pm

[74] Jim Dean Memorial Bench. You know the story?

81 tocho   ~  May 14, 2009 9:16 pm

At least Tex and A-Rod got two good at-bats there... both could have gone either way, sucks that both of them went the wrong way.

82 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 9:16 pm

[79] no, calling him 'Smuggy the Loafpincher' is an insult.

but he's on the Yankees now, so I suppose I shan't call him that anymore.

83 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 9:17 pm

Figures we'd give it right back

84 cult of basebaal   ~  May 14, 2009 9:17 pm

here's an idea, try *not* hanging sliders to Rolen.

85 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 9:17 pm

this game is about to get a lot more infuriating

86 tocho   ~  May 14, 2009 9:18 pm

Can't watch this anymore... see you guys.

87 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:19 pm

Some of the blame shifts to CC now...you can't keep up leads.

88 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 9:19 pm

[80] no - i get some of the jim dean references, but not all

need a strikeout here carsten
or i guess a double play

89 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 9:21 pm

hopefully best he didn't make that ctach since i think rolen would have scored

90 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 9:22 pm

[87] I'm not sure I can really hand some blame to Sabathia, honestly.

96 RagingTartabull   ~  May 14, 2009 9:26 pm

come on, GOTTA make that count

97 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 9:27 pm

You know, this, almost as much as the shutouts and strikeouts is why this guy is an ace.

98 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:28 pm

[95] "Blame" was on the assumption that he gave up another run.

Wow, good D.
That's a huge upgrade from last year, seems like: the defense in general. Sure, there are still blunders, but the number of "whew!" plays has gone way up.

144 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 9:47 pm

alright has to be mo in the 9th - cc seems to really be tiring

145 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 9:48 pm

This is some defensive outfield. Slightly better than Matsui/Damon-Bernie/Shef-Abreu

146 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:48 pm

[143] That's why avoiding the lead off walk was so crucial. You can pound the zone and run the risk they'll hit it hard.

147 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:49 pm

[145] Yep...slightly better than that one.

148 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 9:49 pm

[145] What, you mean slightly better than having all four of them in the outfield at once, right?

149 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:50 pm

[148] Not sure Abreu could handle that...he'd probably be way to concerned about running into someone.

150 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 9:50 pm

[148] Right ya, I mean it was a slow pitch softball kind of team, and you get 4 outfielders in softball. so of course

151 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 9:51 pm

[149] Abreu could field from the warning track, so all he ever has to do is come in - never go back

152 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 9:52 pm

No bad words for Abreu today, when the Halos beat the Sox in twelve. And Bobby tripled. Actually, Jacoby had a bad day in the field, but it was scored a triple.

153 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 9:53 pm

I'd like to watch Downs and Papelbon have a little No Holds Barred death match. Bare fists. Maybe lead pipes.

[152] I like Abreu alot...just having fun with his "phobia". I wonder what will make bigger headlines in Boston: Celtics pushed to Gm 7; Bruins possibly bounced; or Papi 0-7.

[152] Bobby might not be the world's most courageous RF anymore, but the man could roll out of bed in the morning and hit ...

anyways, GO MO!

[154] C's definitely

157 tommyl   ~  May 14, 2009 9:57 pm

Two more....

158 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 9:57 pm

[154] Well, the Bruins come in third. Celtics will get first billing only because it's the playoffs.

nice to get millar out of the way

160 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:58 pm

[156] I don't know...they are 4th in the town.

161 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 9:59 pm

[158] I always thought the pecking order in Boston was Red Sox, Pats (only since they became good), Bruins and Celtics.

162 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 9:59 pm

Sigh.
He's still beautiful.
Thanks be to Mo.

Q: can Mariano be effective throwing his cutter 88-90?

A: tonite, YES!!!

166 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 10:00 pm

The way we like to see it.

167 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 10:01 pm

Very important win...finally win two in a row and reach .500; two straight road series wins against the division; and maybe a reminder to Toronto that they haven't won anything yet.

The offense wasn't very good against a mediocre pitcher, but they came on late and C.C. made it stand up.

Oh Mo..sorry for ever doubting you!

169 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 10:02 pm

By the way, Girardi "managed" the game today and it paid off in two situations: walking Barajas and the Cervelli hit and run. He also didn't overmanage by pulling CC in the 8th. He needs to run the game like this every night.

170 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 14, 2009 10:02 pm

Must be a thrill for Cervelli to be caching these pitchers

171 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 10:02 pm

[161] sox defintely way above everything else, then pats as you have - then a split - seems most people are either into hockey or bball - but since the celts have more history and got relevant before the bruins i would put celts 3rd

172 OldYanksFan   ~  May 14, 2009 10:02 pm

Cerevelli congratulating Mo like he is the seasoned veteran and Mo is a kid.

173 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 10:04 pm

[169] True, the 'tactics' actually worked. Credit to Joe.

[171] I agree. And I'd add that the B's are fourth partly because hockey is just generally in decline.

174 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 14, 2009 10:04 pm

Big Papi, 0-7, 12 LOB..awesome.

175 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 10:04 pm

[172] You have to love that interview.

176 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2009 10:05 pm

[174] Yep, that was an excellent appetizer. And the main course this evening was great, too!

177 williamnyy23   ~  May 14, 2009 10:05 pm

[168] All but one of his cutters was 92-93mph. If the velocity is back, then we have nothing to worry about with Mo..

178 ms october   ~  May 14, 2009 10:07 pm

really doesn't seem like they have won 4 of 6 - but i guess they have.
this 10 game homestand would be a nice time to really get on a run.

179 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2009 10:09 pm

[178] Ten game homestand, I really think they need to win 8.

180 OldYanksFan   ~  May 14, 2009 10:10 pm

The evil twins read the Banter. from ESPN:
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees will allow fans to move down to the outer reaches of the lower deck during batting practice so they can get a better view.

Fans with tickets for seats elsewhere in the new Yankee Stadium can move into outfield sections and corners of the field-level stands during batting practice, a change in policy the team said it made in reaction to fan desires.

Fans will be allowed to watch BP from sections 103-111 in right field and down the first-base line, and sections 129-136 in left field and down the third-base line starting with the homestand that begins Friday. Those sections start just after the foul lines reach the warning track.

181 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 14, 2009 10:12 pm

[180] Great! And patheitc that they needed fan outrage to tell them to change..

182 PJ   ~  May 14, 2009 10:31 pm

I will happily take some credit for that FO response with my "NYS wasn't built for 'the fans.' It was built for 'the haves!'" line. OYF deserves some "love" too, with his rant! Lon Trost is still a tragic excuse for a human being with his "remarks" with respect to same, however. I'm afraid he's much too old and far too "have" to get it at this pernt...

Too bad I don't live closer to NYC, say 1.25K miles closer!

Nice win with CC getting his second straight QS on the road! He really came through "with tha bigness" in that seventh inning!

I get the feeling that the Blue Jays are a mirage in terms of being a force within the AL East.

Toronto still = Halladay + Meh

: )

183 Horace Clarke Era   ~  May 14, 2009 10:48 pm

Well, sometimes the game makes you feel smart. That played out about as I'd expected, from before game 1. I did feel we could bank this one with CC rounding into form. It was nice to see the walking wounded back and delivering. I think if this was a computer-played sport, Tex would be batting 6th right now, or 7th, and Cano in 3d, but my guess is they like the switch-hitting in 3rd, the obp, and are hoping when A Rod finishes spring training, Tex will be helped out of a season-long funk by seeing better pitches.

I liked our 8th inning guy tonight. Ahem.

I REALLY like Matsui's swing on that homer run ball ... that was a nasty southpaw pitcher in there. It has become a cliche to talk about what a professional hitter Matsui is but ... he is.

Jays are better than anyone thought they would be, probably over their heads, but are also getting THREE pitchers back (not as good as the Angels' pitchers but...) in next few weeks. They also have underachieving stars (like us) who can wake up. What interests me more is how slowly Tampa Bay is starting, with all their prime of career studs poised to go higher ... not really sure what is going wrong there but something is.

I also still think the AL East is savage.
