"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

In Control

It was a gorgeous day in New York. A distinct autumn chill is in the air, the humidity is gone, the sun is out. Crisp, lovely. I can only imagine that it’s nice down in Baltimore too.

Yanks are rolling. Serving bad teams and good alike. AJ Burnett, Todd Drew’s Boy, is back on the hill. Let’s hope he’s in a good mood tonight.

Whadda ya say, Meat?

Let’s Go Yan-Kees.

Cano's Nasty.

2 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:37 pm

Hey, Team. Can't stick around long, unfortunately, but just wanted to say I'm devastated not to have caught a lick of Andy yesterday. I keep hearing about his performance and it just kills me that I missed it.

Oh well, that's baseball.

3 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:42 pm

I agree with Singleton. I don't think Cano had possession.

That's a good break.

4 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:45 pm

Posada needs to control A.J.'s control a little better or else..... : )

5 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:47 pm

This is the video Kenny S. was talking about good stuff. Virgin ears beware.

I get it, Michael, Kenny's black, you're white.

Jorgie!!!

Ahhh, so nice to see that finger injury's not an issue.

Pfew.

Hey... who's that kid we have Catching?

8 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:53 pm

[7] :)

9 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 7:56 pm

Ya get the feeling if someone talked to an Ump like that today, they'ld be tarred and feathered.

I don't know if umps were better back then, or TV coverage just wasn't that good. They were certainly more patient.

10 Raf   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:04 pm

[9] Yeah, I couldn't see someone doing that with say, Laz Diaz. Not a fan of manager tantrums, I feel that they're just a colossal waste of time. I know I hated when my managers/coaches would come out while I was on the mound or at bat.

11 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:09 pm

Keep up the good work, A.J.. You're doing great. CACK!

12 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:11 pm

Here's an interesting stat ....

The Yanks went 21-7 in August, but Burnett went 0-4 in his 6 August starts ...

13 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:19 pm

Another pitcher's duel at Camden Yards? Is good-AJ going to return in time for the playoffs? Can the Rays continue their mastery of the Sox in Tampa? All this and MORE will be revealed in the next episode of "As The Pine Tar Rots"...

How was Cano's tater? Always love watchign his swing...

14 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:23 pm

This is the game thread... yes?

15 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:24 pm

[14] I thought so but...tumbleweeds....

16 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:30 pm

A 1-2-3. Didn't think I'd see one.

17 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:31 pm

[15] Chyll Will left some crickets in the comments box.

18 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:34 pm

[13] The boys in the booth were commenting how him and Melky were out early this afternoon working on hitting when Cano came up. He took a massive rip on a first pitch fastball and just missed hitting it square. He laced the next pitch on the inside corner a few feet over the high scoreboard in right. A line drive that could have held a month's worth of laundry. : D

19 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:39 pm

Posada's mnd is fu%$ing elsewhere tonight. Doesn't go to first on ball 4. 2 run job. Walks to dugout on strike 3. WTF!

20 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:39 pm

[20] Oh, and another 2 run job. : )

21 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:39 pm

Nobody gets as happy about a Yankee home run as Nick Swisher.

22 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:40 pm

[20] Oh, very nice self-reference: you picked the perfect number!!!

Yeah, I wish Jorgie would have this much of a concentration problem every night.

23 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:43 pm

[22] I try to self reference at least 1x per week. Makes me feel extra self-important. : ) The AD at my school a few years ago quoted himself by accident during an awards ceremony. I smile just thinking about it and I still give him shit for it.

24 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:45 pm

Did Monday's typhoon here catch a jet-stream over to the east coast of the US? Where are all the Banterites?

[21] One more time, as it never gets old..."The New York Yankees have announced a trade with the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees will receive Mr. Nick Swisher, the WHite Sox will receive Mr. Wilson Betemit".

25 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:49 pm

Hinske get hosed. Soon I want to see a check swing with the catcher pointing to the 3rd base ump. The home ump will simultaneously call a swing as the 3rd base ump says no swing. Than what? One can dream.

26 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:51 pm

A.J. and Posada are having a bonehead contest. I foresee a photo finish.

27 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:53 pm

What was the deal with Jorge's boneheaded play? Following on Gameday so the comments were unclear..

28 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:55 pm

A.J. LOVES that 3 run job. A-hole.

29 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:57 pm

[27] When he walked, he didn't realize he had walked, thought it was still ball three. Then in his most recent at bat, he thought he'd struck out when it was still 2-2. That time A-Rod flashed him two fingers and smiled, and Jeter thought it was hysterical.

30 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 8:58 pm

[27] His first ab he saw ball four and the ump had to tell him to go to first. In another ab he saw a 3-1 fastball for a strike and began walking back to the dugout thinking he struck out. He got back in the box and hit a 2 run homer.

31 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:09 pm

Since no one is here to argue, I want to see Damon bunt here.

32 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:12 pm

[31] I'm back! He should have bunted!!!

Thanks for the posada update..for a "veteran" he does seem to blank out quite a bit..

33 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:15 pm

Strike one to Teix was at his ankles. Strike 3 was at his chest. Lame.

34 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:17 pm

C'mon, Alex!! At least Melancon will get some meaningful innings to keep it close.

35 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:18 pm

2 out rbi makes the Baseball God (Mo) happy.

36 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:19 pm

A-Rod continues to be clutchity-clutch

37 Bama Yankee   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:19 pm

[31] Agreed on the bunt. The probably would have walked Teixeira and Arod's hit would have scored two...

38 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:23 pm

A.J.'s back for more. Whaaaaaaaaa? I'd like to see him give up 15 hits in 6 innings. That would be impressive.

39 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:25 pm

I guess Girardi keeps AJ in as long as he stays in single digits?

40 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:25 pm

Marte. Interesting.

41 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:28 pm

This is freaking outrageous. Hope he's not hurt too bad. I don't see why Teix didn't retag him after he went down.

42 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:30 pm

[41] But he was just safe at first and overran the bag. Teix couldn't have tagged him out. I don't understand how Teix missed the catch, though. Did anyone see?

43 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:33 pm

Who needs a right fielder? Oy. Hinkse has to call off Cano. Yikes.

44 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:34 pm

That was (a) efficient and (b) scary.

A pop fly between Cano and Swisher. AAAAAAAHAWGGAWHAFGH!

45 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:34 pm

[42] The throw was high.and just tipped Teix's glove.
Holy shit Robbie! Will he catch one on the warning track???
Our RFer MUST call that ball.

46 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:36 pm

[42] It was high. I don't think Teix extended as high as he could have. The ball hit the top of his webbing. I was confused b/c the 1st base ump made the safe sign when Teix tagged him the first time. Then Jones went down in a heap. Roll on Robbie.

47 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:36 pm

Meanwhile, TB is about to play themselves out of the WC race.

48 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:36 pm

Oh, Hinske, yeah. Swisher's in LF.

49 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:36 pm

Dope.

50 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:37 pm

A lot of rally killers tonight. : O

51 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:37 pm

Swisher is a very happy man.

52 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:38 pm

I LOVE when we play smallball !!!!!!!!!

53 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:38 pm

Red Bulls all around.

54 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:39 pm

The Yankees are good at hitting home runs. Especially short home runs!

55 The Hawk   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:39 pm

Not a lot of banter tonight, eh?

AJ is wild, man.

56 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:40 pm

[55] I hope someone is making sure he's not punching clubhouse walls. Just a shitty night for him.

57 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:42 pm

Is Hinske an FA after this year? The guy was once a stud (ROY?)... but nobody seems to want him. He is great to have on the bench. If we resign him, I hope they work him at 3rd base. Yeah he stinks in the field, but he stinks in the OF, so why not have him at 3rd. With him at 3rd and ARod as DH, it's a strong lineup and gives ARod some rest.

58 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:45 pm

Shit Sox winning 6-2 in the 7th.

59 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:47 pm

[57] Next year I'd expect Pena to be available to spell A-Rod.

That stat from Kim Jones is amazing: Swisher has more homers in Camden Yards this year than in Yankee Stadium.

60 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:48 pm

[58] Tampa, oh Tampa...I am still so scarred from 2004&7 that I am very nervous about facing the Sox in the playoffs...

61 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:50 pm

[60] Look at it this way. If things go according to the program, then we face either the Angels or the Red Sox, but definitely not both. (I'm assuming we get past the Tigers.)

62 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:53 pm

[61] Verlander and Miggy Cabrera scare me too! I am already a nervous wreck thinking about the playoffs..a Sox-Dodgers WS would make me take a vacation to Laos to avoid the news..

63 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:56 pm

Good for Marte.

64 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 9:59 pm

[62] Since Kenny Rogers shut em down a few years ago, logic dictates the 09 Yankes would destroy Verlander. Or something like that. : D I'm down with your nervous wreckitude, though. Last October was fucking terrible but completely free of stress.

65 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:00 pm

aahhhhhhh... the beaches of Laos...

66 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:03 pm

67 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:04 pm

Love Dave Robertson. Love.

68 BuckFoston   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:05 pm

I can't believe the Yankees are only winning by 3. They allowed the Orioles 6 runs. I'll say it again, a team like this will get nowhere in the post-season.

How's that?

69 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:05 pm

[66] I think you just did.

Which am I?

70 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:05 pm

72 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:07 pm

[68] Nicely done. And you're relatively new here!
I guess you said you'd been lurking a while, so you developed the "ear".

73 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:08 pm

Robertson in the 9th?

74 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:09 pm

[73] No way.

75 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:09 pm

Someday I want to figure out the history of September call-ups. I've always thought it was odd that teams could play with huge rosters during the stretch run...strikes me as inelegant. I wonder why MLB doesn't do something like they have in the NFL, where you could carry up to 40 on your roster after September 1, but can only suit 25 (or whatever number) for each game.

76 BuckFoston   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:10 pm

[72] Yes, I enjoy reading you guys more than listening to the announcers. Can't say I agree with everything, but definitely more interesting and entertaining.

77 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:10 pm

[71] Reds & Pirates double-header yesterday..shudder....
Highlight show last night, Braves at Marlins.."maybe" 2000 people in the stands..why do they have a team again??

78 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:11 pm

[73] Did you mean the eighth?

79 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:11 pm

[66] Jorge and A.J. cannot be successful as battery mates and it is now adversely affecting Jorge's abilitiy to pay attention while batting. Homeruns be damned. They're rally killers anyway.
: D

80 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:12 pm

[78] I think with expanded rosters, teams should be able to use the same pitcher for the eventh and ninth, but not the eighth. That way, the Yankees could use Robertson for the seventh and ninth and still save the eighth for Hughes.

81 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:15 pm

[77] From the Pittsburgh-Post.
There were, by the Post-Gazette's count, little more than 800 people in the Great American Ball Park stands yesterday afternoon, even though the Reds announced a paid attendance of 13,051. That translated into roughly 12,000 folks who decided, on a splendidly sunny day, to be no-shows for the first half of a day-night doubleheader between the National League Central's bottom feeders

82 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:15 pm

[80] Hmm. Well, Robertson could play RF for the eighth, then come back and pitch the ninth. That would be fun, I bet he could do it as well as Hinske.

I'd like to see Aceves pitch all the odd innings one night. The even innings could be Joba, Robertson, Bruney, and, well, obviously, Hughes.

83 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:15 pm

Robertson still in the game...color me surprised!

84 The Hawk   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:16 pm

Eric Hinske looks like a gorilla.

85 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:16 pm

[80] I never understood why they don't have expanded rosters in April for the first month..then slowly whittle down the roster..it's unfair when your rival gets to face Kansas City's AAA scrubs..

86 thelarmis   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:16 pm

hey everyone! just gettin' in. catching up on all things baseball (and dinner!). looks like AJ wasn't very effective, but we're mashing. let's...WIN!!!

87 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:16 pm

[82] That would be awesome!

88 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:16 pm

[66, 70} Joe Girardi is clearly incompetent and is most likely a socialist

89 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:17 pm

[85] They used to do that in the 1950s or 1960s. I think they started with 28 or 27 then cut down to 25.

90 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:17 pm

Love Dave Robertson. Loooove.

91 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:18 pm

Nice, Michael! The ball took an erotic hop and went right past Hairston.

92 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:19 pm

Ooh, now it's Cokey. Girardi has a few more tricks up his sleeve!

93 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:19 pm

Oh, it's the wrong Phil.

Okay, I just looked at the O's line-up, and I can live with Coke right now.

94 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:20 pm

[91] I tried to take an erotic hop with the gorgeous lobby woman, unfortunately she shot me down with a Baltimore Chop..

95 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:20 pm

When you look at what Marte and Robertson just did, it makes it all the more disturbing that Burnett got the snot kicked out of him by these birds.

96 BuckFoston   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:21 pm

Rays pound Okajima. He faced 6 batters got none out. Papelbon coming in to get the 2 inning save. Bases loaded no outs in the 8th.

97 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:22 pm

[94] Then you should hand out with Michael Kay.

Monkeypants, I guess you aren't getting the YES feed. Kay just pointed that if the 3-run lead holds for another inning, Mo will get a chance for another Save.

98 thelarmis   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:24 pm

[96] motherfucker struck out the first batter. damn him!!!

99 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:25 pm

[97] Nope, thankfully. No YAnkees game for me on TV, and I'm sort of boycotting Sterling-Waldman tonight. Just following, more or less silently, on Gameday.

I am, however, enjoying tje Blue Jays-RAngers double header.

107 BuckFoston   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:29 pm

[98] You'd think they would have at least scored 1 or 2 runs more.

108 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:31 pm

Sox get out of it. 7-4 Boston in the 9th.

109 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:33 pm

Papelbon threw 9 pitches to Crawford. I don't think a single one of them was in the strike zone. (No bad calls, just Crawford swinging a lot.) Yeah, the last one was, and Carl flied out.

Papelbon was actually very good that inning. I would have been very concerned about bringing him in with the bases loaded and nobody out, if I were a Sox fan.

110 thelarmis   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:33 pm

goddamn motherfucker. papelbitch gets out of a bases loaded no-out jam. fuck that piece o' dog shit.

When I was at Camden in late July, the Sox were in town, and it had to be at LEAST 1/2 filled with Boston fans.

116 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:37 pm

I have to admit, Monkeypants, that this is not a high leverage situation. But, I don't think Girardi is any worse than other managers at this particular aspect of the game.

117 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:38 pm

[115] Yeah. The Southwest Airlines special. They can see the Sox, plus airfare, plus some harbor hotel, for less than they pay to go to Fenway.

118 monkeypants   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:40 pm

[116] Save Situation ®.

No, no worse, but just as irritating. Hopefully he's not needed tomorrow for a third straight day.

119 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:40 pm

Just a reminder:
Mo, 2009: 247 ERA+, 0.896 WHIP.
But don't be fooled. His career ERA+ is only 201.

120 BuckFoston   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:41 pm

Think of it as a reward for Mo. Yes we know the save is a stupid stat, but it still gets lotsa play in the media and with most fans. I think it wouldn't be so bad if Mo retires as the all-time saves leader, would actually reflect how he has been the best reliever ever.

121 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:42 pm

[120] I dunno. It's just so obvious that he's the greatest ever. We know he doesn't give a damn about the stat. It's a dumb stat. Etc.

122 Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:42 pm

[128] So was I...w/o the DP we might have been looking at a 30 pitch save.

133 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2009 10:51 pm

Yeah, so we're all on the same page.

Will he be Unavailable tomorrow, or will Joe just be a little more reluctant to go to him? Hughes could go two innings.

TB now 6 games behind Boston. Methinks they are done.

One earned run in his last 29 appearances. Unreal.

[133] Silly man. If Mo is unavailable, then Hughes will pitch the ninth for the Save ®. The real question, then, will be...who will pitch the eighth?

[136] i think it's Joba's throw day. perfect time for him to pitch the Eighth.

[136] Oh. Huh.
But <i?Hughes pitches the eighth. That's why they call it "the eighth inning". Wait, no. That's why they call him "Phil Hughes".
No.
Anyway, it's confusing.
