Glug, Glug, Glug (The Ship Be Sinkin’)

I couldn’t concentrate on the Yankee game tonight (they lost 5-3). Instead, I watched the Tigers lose to the White Sox and thought about what I’d do if I rooted for the Tigers.

Objects would be thrown, items would be broken. Dag, it’s enough to drive you to drink.

booze

At least it makes for an exciting final day of the regular season, don’t it?

Uh, and this is neurotic, superstitious gahbige, but for what it is worth, the Yanks have won exactly 103 games four times in their history: 1942, lost the World Series; 1954, second place; 1980, lost in the playoffs; and 2002, lost in the playoffs. If they win tomorrow, they’ll finish the season with 103 wins.

Then again, I grew up on 103rd street so the number is cool by me. But if I was a superstitious sort…I’m just sayin!

for a coupla weeks now, i've been thinkin' we'd end up w/ 103 wins. i am sorta superstitious, i guess, but our failure to win it all after finishing w/ that exact amount of wins, in the past, doesn't bother me. i'll go with Alex growing up on 103rd and "3" being my favorite #, along with us being the best baseball team on the planet and say - let's win tomorrow, look good doin' it, then take this bitch up to ELEVEN !!!!! (wins, that is...)

The Tigers having to use Verlander reopens the debate about what series the Yankees should take. If the Tigers wind up advancing, Verlander would not be available on full rest until Friday. If the Yankees choose ALDS A, that would allow Verlander to still pitch two games on full rest. However, if they pick ALDS B, Verlander would have to start one game on short rest.

well, Torre has taken a late, commanding lead and will pretty much wrap up the division...

[2] well, with Pavano going tomorrow, i think the whole thing will be "mute"! ; )

at this point, we're just gonna have to beat whoever the hell we play. we best show up to task!!!

i want it all this season.

[3] Having to play the Cardinals seems like the consolation prize, not the reward for finishing first. Pujols/Holliday and Carpenter/Wainwright are the two most potent combos on both sides in the NL. With Hamels still not pitching well and the bullpen in disarray, the Phillies would seem to be the easier opponent. Of course, with De La Rosa likely out for the NLDS, the Rockies might not stand much of a chance anyway.

[5] i didn't realize that De La Rosa was out. if things play out as they "should", it'll be the Yanks/Cards in the Serious. let's avenge 1964!!!! i'm still pissed about that. not that i was alive, or anything. but McCarver was on that team, i believe. so, fuck it - let's win!!! : )

[6] I would LOVE* to see Mariano on the mound against Pujols with the championship on the line. That would be just about as good as it could possibly get.

*Assuming Mariano wins the battle.

8 thelarmis   ~  Oct 4, 2009 1:17 am

[7] yes, mariano HAS to win the battle!!! if that scenario implodes, i urge you to contact Cliff or Cult to find me if you don't hear from me for a minute. they know how to get a hold of me. i don't deal very well with Yankees in October!!! : ~

dodgers clinch w/ a 5-0 victory. Torre in the postseason every year.

[9] At this point, Torre's making up for lost time (i.e. Braves, Mets, Cards), so it's a wash, but good for him. I appreciate Joe for what he's done and I hope he'll be welcome again someday at Yankee Stadium and honored appropriately, but thankfully it feels like a long time since he was here. I don't know if half the guys on the 25 would be playing much, if at all, if he were still piloting the team.

Alex, if you really want to know how the average Tiger fan must feel right now, ask the nearest Mutts fan; they can tell you all about it in their sleep.

I dunno, guys, I'm not raring to call out anyone just yet. It's disappointing that the team is losing these games going in; I don't know if they're coasting or not, but I always felt even the little victories mean something, and losing is draining (if not to the players, then to the fans) no matter how "meaningless" the games are. I'm not saying they should risk their starters getting hurt, but fer chrissake, play with a little, what is the word, pride?

[10] Agreed..don't want to close out the season with a Tampa sweep, it's bad karma..

Yanks-Cards would be an awesome WS, but I am hoping for the Rockies..we'd beat them easily..

I completely stopped paying attention to the game after the Yankees got their hit (right away, obviously) and eventually turned it off totally in favor of the Tigers.

Michael Kay is worse than ever in meaningless games, and I just can't even have him as background noise anymore just repeating himself over and over and over again. If I hear "fresh and sharp" one more time I'll start throwing things.

[11] holy crap! my best friend from childhood lives in denver. if we made the Series w/ them, i'd expect him to (somehow) get tickets. he's a doctor, so i figure he could swing it. if so, i'd VERY much consider flying out there to go to a game. no - i'd make sure it'd happen!!!

14 thelarmis   ~  Oct 4, 2009 4:01 am

[12] do you have playoff tickets?!

15 thelarmis   ~  Oct 4, 2009 4:19 am

Griffey has 3 homers in his last 3 games. who knows if tomorrow is his last game, not. outside of essentially being a pinch hitter for seattle next year, there's really no fit for him. tampa would be the only logical place and they're stuck with Pat the Bat for another year. i guess, maybe Texas. andruw jones will be gone. crazy that he'll become a 1B/DH, if anything...no more center field.

the DH market will be pretty ripe, and Matsui and Thome will certainly be on there, amongst quite a bit of others...

if Junior gets 3 AB's tomorrow, he'll reach 10,000. if he plays next season, he'll reach 1,200 XBH, 1,700 Runs and 2,800 Hits. he should fall short of 550 doubles, 1,900 RBI and Willie Mays (660 homers). his OPS should remain over .900.

regardless of anything, he will ALWAYS have the prettiest, most perfect and most incredibly beautiful swing of all time!!!

[14] Not as of yet. I plan to beg, borrow and steal though

17 thelarmis   ~  Oct 4, 2009 4:26 am

[16] good luck. i hope you get there...you deserve it! : )

No, that's not right. In either type of series, Verlander could pitch on Friday 10/9 and then again on 10/14. Both would be on full rest, and in each case it would be Game Two and Game Five.

Torre's career is living proof that a manager is only as good as the 25 man roster he is given.

Which reminds me. YES showed Stick Michael in the stands in Tampa. No one person deserves more credit for the four rings than him, yet no one gets less credit or made less money as a result.

As for the Twins/Tigers, I have one word: Tie!

21 The Hawk   ~  Oct 4, 2009 10:15 am

[10] I guess Bill Belichick has been making up for lost time too! One might even say these guys were able to claw back to "average" with all their recent and extended success. ; )
