For You Blue

I didn’t pick this cause it’s been sampled, or because I especially like the strings, but simply because there are few sounds in this world that are more beautiful than the sound of Clifford Brown playing the trumpet.

[0] Great stuff! Clifford Brown died before his 26th birthday, in a car accident. He was famously known as one of the (unfortunately few) clean-living jazz men..and for the beauty of his playing at still a very young age..

I'm not a huge fan of the "so&so with Strings" albums, but many jazz guys did them whether from label pressure or they just dug it. (Charlie Parker of all people pushed for a with strings album..)

[3] Ouch. The peach schnapps have turned...

man, can this blog get any cooler? and Alex - get outta my collection! i've been listening to Clifford Brown every day since last Thursday on the JJ Johnson "The Eminent Vol. 1" collection! it's JJ, Clifford & Jimmy Heath up front, with the MJQ rhythm section. 1953 Blue Note Records.

and speaking of Blue & trumpet - i got trumpeter Blue Mitchell's debut Blue Note album on CD today, from Japan! it's a stellar album, 10 years after the JJ Johnson record, with a terrific lineup, including Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock & Horace Silvers' rhythm section.

[5] Great stuff! If you ever tour Japan you better bring $1000 for record shopping.

Not a bad preview of Angels-Soz by Peter Theo Gammons, though this bit had me cracking up: "Jason Varitek seemed drained, but has never stopped trying to help Victor Martinez get to know the pitchers. "

So now Captain Tek, who has zero value on offense or defense, has found his niche..

[6] yeah, i read gammons' drivel earlier today. i hope the halos sweep...

man, i'm spending soooo much on blue note titles again here the last coupla weeks. i stopped, for the most part, for a good 3-4 months. but i've got the bug again and the titles left i need are so hard to find, i need to just pick 'em up now, and worry about it later...

[2] The numbers aren't a complete ambush, they've been there, evolving, all year and we had a discussion earlier about how Jeter's are very good - and are even better by some other formulae. The varying results, I suppose, make the point that fielding stats are still a work in progress, though I remember asking if anyone had any details on the allegations that Jeter had been told to play deeper and was being 'shifted' more by the coaches ... i.e. better scouting and/or more willingness to listen.

I've always seen Cano's D as evolving, too. Alternates flash (and a strong arm) with some ditziness in the field. I'm not shocked he isn't high, though 'one of the worst' does surprise. I assume A Rod got hurt in range by being hurt. Tex as a negative does surprise, absolutely. There go THOSE MVP votes! (On the other hand Torii Hunter is being touted for a 9th Golden Glove he absolutely does not deserve any more.) Hairston looks VERY good defensively, all over. I remember when Cash got him a lot of people here were all meh, but he's a great bench pickup.

Oh, and Clifford Brown ... Helen Merrill and Clifford Brown, on "Brownie" ... amazingly good. A tragic death. Merrill is the only person I'd allow to sing 'Don't Explain' other than Billie. (Merrill is still singing, by the way!)

[5] thelarmis, I finally quit procrastinating on Lee Morgan and picked up Cornbread, and The Procrastinator. Sweet treats.

11 thelarmis   ~  Oct 6, 2009 2:03 pm

[10] nice, man! Cornbread is a classic. 1965, Hank Mobley. Ceora is a beautiful bossa. we sometimes play it in our jazz trio.

the Procrastinator is terrific hard bop! kinda rare, so nice find on that one, man! i might have to listen to it later...

i'm just gonna go ahead and assume you've got The Sidewinder!!! : )

12 Sliced Bread   ~  Oct 6, 2009 3:57 pm

[11] I HAD The Sidewinder on cassette (from vinyl) but lost track of it years ago. Will definitely replace it at some point. I was more interested in picking up the other two because I hadn't heard them, and they'd been recommended over the years.
Your post the other day reminded me about Lee, so I had to pull the trigger.

nice, man! here's my Lee collection, as a leader, on Blue Note. there are 25 individual releases, plus i have 1 best of collection. i have him on numerous other albums, as a sideman. of course, there's a lot more material on other labels, but here's my Blue Note Lee Morgan CD collection, in chronological order:

Lee Morgan – Indeed!
Lee Morgan – Volume 2: Sextet
Lee Morgan – Volume 3
Lee Morgan – City Lights
Lee Morgan – The Cooker
Lee Morgan – Candy
Lee Morgan - Leeway
Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder
Lee Morgan – Search For The New Land

Lee Morgan – The Rumproller
Lee Morgan – The Gigolo

Lee Morgan – The Procrastinator

Lee Morgan – Live At The Lighthouse (3cd)
Lee Morgan – Lee Morgan

Morgan also graces the cover of the 1st Blue Note biography book and there were 2 biographies written on Lee last year.

ps - i'm still kicking myself for not buying a 10" vinyl version of The Sidewinder for $20, at a record convention on Long Island in the early '90's. it wasn't an original record from back in the day or anything, but it was hella cool and i've always dug 10"'s. oh well...

14 Sliced Bread   ~  Oct 6, 2009 4:26 pm

[13] damn, you're stocked up on Lee. Didn't he have the best album titles? So many great ones on that list. Gotta dust off The Rumproller.

15 thelarmis   ~  Oct 6, 2009 4:40 pm

[14] Rumproller, is actually an Andrew Hill composition and title! but yeah, there were awesome titles on there!

hey, thanks another jazz lesson, and for giving me another boatload of stuff to look into!

17 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 6, 2009 7:13 pm

[15] Andrew Hill is one of those Blue Note names that always pops up, but I have only heard a few of his albums as a leader.

thelarmis, please insure your collection!!
