Here Comes the Pain

I received a VHS tape of the NFL Film’s Crunch Course production as a bonus for subscribing to Sports Illustrated. It was the last time I subscribed to the magazine, must have been ’86 or ’87. Back then, I loved professional football as much, if not more, than I loved baseball. And while my devotion to the NFL would not last much longer, the Crunch Course tape endures. It explains what attracted me to the game–violence. Glorious, cinematic, hyperbolic, violence.

In anticipation of the playoffs this weekend, here’s the entire show, in five segments.

Grrrrrr–ufff.

And that’s word to Kenny Easley.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME!

Iggles vs. the boys. Can't they both lose?

Actually I don't hate Philly with the same intensity of Dallas. Sort of like not hating the Orioles or Blue Jays or Devil Rays the same as hating the Red Sox.

Stupid Giants.

[2] That's how I feel about the Pats-Ravens game. It's like an Angels-Red Sox playoff series. F#$% 'em both. : ) Course I'm out in the cold this year with the Steelers.

[3] congrats bama - quite a sports year for you.

[2] NO!!

7 Bama Yankee   ~  Jan 9, 2010 5:50 pm

[6] Thanks, ms october. My teams certainly have been on a roll lately (pun intended)...which could be bad news for [2] since I'm a Cowboys fan... ;-)

8 ms october   ~  Jan 9, 2010 6:34 pm

[7] me too :} ( we have to keep that kind of low key around here though)

the jets are looking better than i thought they would so far

[7] congrats bama! hey, is it frigid by you? it was 15 degrees here yesterday! i could move back north for this...at least i'd be with my family!

[8] are you a 'bama fan, too? my nittany lions did pretty well. JoePa!

10 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 7:01 pm

[8] i'm not a football guy, and growing up i liked both the jets and giants. is that bad? i had a giants garbage can in my room, but wore jets wristsbands. (can't believe i just admitted to wristbands, haha!) i saw the jets play in person a few times, wesley walker was my favorite player and my best friend is (still) a HUGE jets fan.

i have the game on mute and hope the jets win and advance!

[12] What's up thelarmis? Sunday morning breakfast, baroque classical internet radio and catching up on the hot-stove league news. Wonder if the Yanks will sign A-Chap?

Oh, and the Royals signed Scott Podsednik, exciting news!

14 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 7:21 pm

[13] i LOVE baroque music. Bach RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

15 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 7:24 pm

[13] thought of you earlier. 1st cd i listened to today was alphonse mouzon 'mind transplant'. it's the blue note release after the funky snakefoot (1975). it's really good and more in the vein of Cobham's 'Spectrum'. tommy bolin plays guitar on both...

[15] Nice, got to pick that one up. I had on Matthew Shipp's "Nu Bop" last night, always a fan of him with David S. Ware. Chores time now, then out into the gorgeous sunny winter day. Am NOT missing the East Coast winters, thankfully the Pacific side of Japan doesn't get very cold. Enjoy Cowboys-Eagles!

[9] hi thelarmis - you settled in yet?
as for bama - sort of, but not really - my friend from high school was a pretty big time player in the early 90's so i rooted for them then, and a part of me still does- but i had a lot of alabama/auburn crammed down my throat growing up, and so a bit turned off from college football, and now i have a hard time rooting for nick saban

[13] you are really scraping the crumbs off the hot stove :}

18 Chyll Will   ~  Jan 9, 2010 9:42 pm

[17] Alas, the Banter is going baroque... >;)

19 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 10:29 pm

[17] hi ms. o! yeah, i'm pretty much settled in, for the most part. still a little more to do/get and i'm still learning how things operate 'round here, bills etc. i've gotten a ton done and pretty much love it here!

i know less about colelge football than i do about the nfl. i've played both alabama & auburn and must say that i'd rather gig in tuscaloosa than auburn any night of the week. that said, a percussionist from penn state, before me, is the professor there. and it's closer to atlanta...

it's funny, the ONLY college football game i ever watched growing up, was penn state vs. nebraska in 1982. it was total happenstance that i watched that game and ended up going to school there...

[18] at first glance i thought "baroque" was "barbecue", to which i was gonna have to refer you to RI Yank, so he can inform you that i don't eat the stuff...! : )

Vlad the Impaler to Tex-ass for 1-year $5mil + performance incentives and 2nd year option (not sure if it's player, team or mutual). according to chris singleton, yanks are in "serious talks" with JH Jr. i'm cool with that...

'Bama & Ms. O - you're lookin' good tonight. congrats.

think i'm a-gonna crack my first ale...

20 Bama Yankee   ~  Jan 9, 2010 11:21 pm

[9] thelarmis, yeah it's been mighty cold here lately. It's supposed to get down into the single digits tonight. Brrrrr. I'm ready for spring...

[17] ms. october, who was your friend who played for Bama back in the 90's (if you don't mind me asking)? I was down there in T-town during that time and my best friend was an equipment manager for the football team and so I got to know a lot of the players.

Oh, and "How Bout them Cowboys!" ;-)

21 ms october   ~  Jan 9, 2010 11:30 pm

[20] yay!! :}
chris anderson - maybe characterizing him as "pretty big time" was an exaggeration, though he was the featured back for some period of time, but he was big time for us. huntsville has produced a lot of flameouts.

yeah my mom keeps pointing out that it has been much colder in huntsville than up in nyc for over a week.

22 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 11:44 pm

[20 & 21] congrats, you two! again, i'm not much of a football guy, but goddamn do i loathe the cowboys, haha! : )

yeah, it sure is cold. i don't mind. and i love snow. should be in the teens and 20's again tomorrow here in "hotlanta"...

[21] huntsville produced an insanely amazing trumpter (and pianist and artist...). just a no-name guy that lives here that i've worked with on/off for a decade. if he was in NY, he'd be first call. i played in huntsville a coupla times in the 90's. good lord are you better off in nyc!!!!!! ; )

23 thelarmis   ~  Jan 9, 2010 11:58 pm

[22] ugh. "trumpeter". if he "were" in...

please don't let my mom (english teacher) read that post!!! : ~

24 Chyll Will   ~  Jan 10, 2010 12:38 am

Hey! 011010 >;)

25 thelarmis   ~  Jan 10, 2010 12:55 am

[24] i doesn't get it!

1-0-0 1-0-0 1

now, Diane would get that! (it's a Rush reference!)

how the neighbors treatin' ya, chyll?! hope uncle woodrow is doin' alright! : )

26 Chyll Will   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:22 am

The neighbors are blissfully stupid; they keep tripping the breaker in one of their rooms and asking me to flip it for them, they somehow knocked out the furnace for two weeks, they walk like elephants and let their kids run around in circles, shaking the whole house even though I've complained directly to them about it and then the most headscratching-est event just the other day; one of them came down and asked for a couple spoons of sugar for her cereal.

Uncle Woodrow is doing fine and i suppose he's pretty much recovered from the surgery from April. Maybe this time we can actually joyfully celebrate my birthday as opposed to me playing the superhero >;)

27 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:26 am

[26] Best wishes to your uncle W! And a pox on your neighbors..should have given them some sea salt and said it was sugar!

28 thelarmis   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:28 am

[26] ugh on the neighbors. i hope you can escape soon. i feel your pain, trust me...

sooo glad uncle woodrow is doing well and i hope that you have a celebratory birthday! : )

29 thelarmis   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:33 am

[27] i detoured from jazz listening and took a left turn to a few thrash metal cd's i just got in the mail! man, do i LOVE metal!!! : )

but don't worry, i steered right back into jazz bliss w/ an odd live Frank Sinatra cd. check this out - it's on Blue Note, 1959, live in Australia, with Red Norvo (vibes) and his swingin' quintet. really good stuff, man!

stickin' w/ the vibe theme (pun not intended til i typed it and realized it was kinda kool!), i'm now spinnin' a Stefon Harris Blue Note CD from 2006, that's a tribute to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.

it's not great, but it's certainly not bad. Alex Belth was asking about him here not too very long ago. i've got 3 of Stefon's BN cd's; there are 4 others, i'll eventually get...

30 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:37 am

[29] I can dig the Red & Blue Eyes, will check it out.
Just back from a loooong walk to the Korean neighborhood in town, me and the lady had to pick up our grab-bag of Asian-groceries (Thai rice, Korean kimchi, mango juice, etc). 3-day weekend here so leisurely beer and dinner at home tonight, new book to start and internet radio. (been wayyy to lazy recently, not working on my jazz site at all..)

But ready for baseball!! NFL playoffs...yawn...

31 thelarmis   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:42 am

[30] sounds like you've carved a wonderful life for yourself over there, my friend!

i brought in a great asian noodle dinner for myself this evening. followed by a sixer of sierra nevada. not quite as glorious a night as it may sound though...

i hear ya, as i need to get back on a serious and tight practice schedule...

32 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 10, 2010 2:54 am

[31] Man, things are relaxed now but it too YEARS to get here. A lot of awful jobs, language difficulty, horrid apartments, etc etc. (alongside great bars, gorgeous ladies and trips around Asia as well, wasn't all bad :)

Bottle of Sapporo Black Label chilling in the fridge now, though would love a Sierra Pale Ale.

New year's resolutions part III: you practice regularly, I do more web work and drink less Guinness!

33 thelarmis   ~  Jan 10, 2010 3:00 am

[32] oh man, i hear ya! i know all about the trials & tribulations of relocation and re-creating oneself. i fully understand all the hard work and time that goes into it and it's never perfect, but you've done good, my friend!

i never need a resolution to practice; i love to do it. things have just been in upheaval lately and i hope to get back into a settled routine soon. never vow to drink less!!! ; )

34 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 10, 2010 3:08 am

[32] Haha, I had one beer too many the other night (maybe two too many..) and woke up at 4am dehydrated and with a vicious migraine. How dare my body object to drinking extra tasty Spanish beer!

Cooking time, then hope to catch up on some more Hot Stove news this evening. Enjoy that last Sierra then get some slumber!
