Hope you have a Jean-Claude Van Damn good lunch, Alex.

Just got a fire going, waiting for the sleet, snow (expecting about 5 inches in NW NJ) and football. Not sure what's on the menu (besides beer), but after we get back from taking the kids to the library, the TV will be on for about 10 hours today. Football, 60 Minutes, 24 season premiere, some Golden Globes.

Sweet lazy Sunday. Enjoy, all!

Something to brighten your day:

NYC's hopeful singing about the hope of NYC.

Took the dogs to the park for an hour this am. Now they get to be tuckered out and I can watch Dallas lose.

Man, it's bone cold out there and raining. We had a nice brunch and then high-tailed it back to the Bronx. Changed into sweats, and have now planted my ass squarely on the couch to watch these Jets, Jets, Jets.

Heck, the Jets are actually making a game of it.

HA! Jay Feely = "A Football Player". i guess they do that in other sports, too...

i'm gonna go on a limb here and say that Derek Fisher is a basketball player.

Football announcers practically never say "a player", "a game", "the field", "a team", but only "a football player", "a football game", "the football field", "a football team". I think it's probably the most annoying thing about football.

9 thelarmis   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:17 pm

[8] huh. i don't know enough about it to realize that. i barely watch football, but i'm watching the Jets right now. if my grandpa were alive, i know he'd be watching, so i'm 'seeing' it for him.

i have noticed quite a few baseball references during broadcasts the last few weeks. mmm, baseball!!!

10 thelarmis   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:21 pm

[8] folks always say baseball is "boring" and "slow." seems to me there's more "action" in 'our' sport than this. sooo many timeouts, penalties, reviews, challenges, chains/spotting, etc. i'm not a fan of the clock or that every field is the same. the coin flips seem ultra dumb and remedial to me and i absolutely loathe the overtime rules of whoever scores first. i'm also not a fan of all the brutal violence and over celebratory riots for everyday routine plays.

other than that...

11 thelarmis   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:22 pm

Freeman McNeil !!! ; )

12 ms october   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:26 pm

[8] you mean the national football league?

13 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:30 pm

[10] Agreed! I can't imagine how boring it must be to watch a football game at the stadium..is it just the tailgating that gets the fans revved up?

14 thelarmis   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:33 pm

[13] they used to tailgate outside my dorm room at penn state. i hated that shit. i don't understand the fun in that...

i do think it's cool that the Jets are winning though!

27 degrees in Hell (Michigan, that is.)

16 Alex Belth   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:50 pm

Holy Jetsness!

17 rbj   ~  Jan 17, 2010 7:51 pm

It's funny. I'm a Giants fan but I don't have the antipathy towards the Jets the way I do towards the Mets. And I'm able to root for other teams such as the Steelers or Packers, if they have a good story line. Even the Iggles I could accept winning.

Except the Cowboys. I hate the Cowboys.

Now in baseball, it's mostly Yankees I root for.

18 rbj   ~  Jan 17, 2010 8:00 pm

Congrats, Jets.

19 RIYank   ~  Jan 17, 2010 9:27 pm

I don't care much who wins, but man, Rex Ryan is an irritating person.

20 thelarmis   ~  Jan 17, 2010 9:39 pm

[19] he has eaten many many foods i have never gone near. large portions, too!

21 The Hawk   ~  Jan 17, 2010 9:49 pm

First Belth posts about going to Avatar the very same night I do; soon after he posts about eating at Petite Abeille the same time I do! It is eerie.

As was in some ways the Jets winning. Damn it made me happy but it was weird!

If Jets make it to SB (which they possibly won't, cause they're pretty much a younger version of the 2009 Ravens), then I want Suzy Kolber and Joe Namath to team up for a "New York State of Mind" duet.

23 The Hawk   ~  Jan 18, 2010 12:21 am

Francesa opens Mike'd Up with a litany of lucky incidents during the game that won it for the Jets. He even went so far as to assert that on the Jets' first TD drive "they're not scoring a touchdown there" without a pass interference call. He really is like a caricature of himself sometimes. Just does not want to give this team in any credit.

[23] You're first mistake is even tuning into Mike Francesa. Your second mistake is taking him seriously. All you need to do is listen to him for a day and you realize that he has no real sports knowledge. He is great at doing talk radio, however. His objective is to have thousands of Jets fans chomping at the bit to listen to and call his show tomorrow. That's how he gets paid. Offering thoughtful, intelligent commentary doesn't exactly afford you a nice Long Island mansion.

As for the Jets, I was a big fan growing up. Along with the Knicks, they were both second to the Yankees, but still worthy of devoted attention. I've since dedicated all of my considerable sports emotions to the Yankees, so now only casually root for the Jets. Because they've been so mediocre lately (like the NFL as a league), I've kind of latched onto one of the few instances of actual greatness in the league...Manning and the Colts. For that reason, I think that I'd be equally happy if either made the Super Bowl. It's kind of a weird feeling to have an equal rooting interest for two opponents (as opposed to preferring one team, but being ok if the other one).

Also, not that it needs the ratings, but the NFL is headed toward a great matchup. It either gets Manning or the cinderella Jets (the Jets are probably the only NY team who can still be a true cinderella) against the old gun slinger Favre or the Brees led Saints from Katrina recovering New Orleans. Any matchup would interesting, but the Jets versus Favre could carry over most to the field.

[24] Well, to be fair - to myself - I tuned in cause it was late and there weren't any other options to satisfy my Jets talk jones before bed. I don't take him any more seriously than he merits, I don't think. I disagree that he hasn't any real sports knowledge but I'm aware I'm playing into his hands. On the other, er, hand, I truly believe he has some weird stubborn thing about crediting the Jets.

Dear Mike Blandcesca,

This past Sunday, the Jets showed up, played better than San Diego and won. In light of your dedication and support, we decided to all chip in and buy you a nice warm cup of STFU. Cheers!

Sincerely,
J-E-T-S JETS!JETS!JETS!
