The Bronx is Burning

The Bombers are back home. This weekend gives the A’s of Oakland. Cliff has the Preview.

Dreaming of relief from this heatwave, we stay inside, in the a.c., and drink cool, refreshing beverages as we cheer:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

An interesting piece on Montero:

Just a wonderful day here in Pasadena.

82 degrees at present with a lovely breeze.

I don't think it's gotten above 90 degrees more than a handful of times so far all summer.

3 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:10 pm

God, it's horrible out there. It's no joking around, man.

4 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:13 pm

I was offered free tickets in section 321 for tomorrow ... I was actually GLAD I already had plans.

5 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:17 pm

Already 900 pitches and a pep talk by Cervelli at the mound....come on guys, it's late here and I want to watch an inning or three before hitting the hay.

6 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:17 pm

Already losing??

So I hear you guys are having some nasty weather over there..be safe everyone!

7 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:23 pm

I have n irrational hatred of called strike threes.

8 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:24 pm

[7] Steady, man.

9 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:25 pm

Man, Curtis has been taking a beating recently ...

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:27 pm

[8] Need coffee to wake up normal..you're on Weissbier time, yes?

11 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:30 pm

[10] Yeah, but it's gonna be bedtime soon.

Hey look, a swinging strike three. That's much better, no?

12 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:31 pm

Phil Hughes is failing to impress so far this evening.

13 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:33 pm

I miss the Phil Hughes before the Yankees started developing him. Can we get that guy back?

Also, can the Yankees stop trying? They kind of suck

14 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:33 pm

Those Batter's Eye seats are nothing to write home about .... and damn expensive for the view.

15 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:34 pm

with Cahill on the mound, the Yanks can't afford to spot the A's more than 2

16 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:40 pm

[13] Yeah, I miss that guy too. But fortunately for us the Yankees take the long view, and either trade away pitching prospects, or develop them to maximize their potential as set-up men. You must have faith in the process.

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:41 pm

Wild speculation here..Red Sox vs. Phillies in the WS?

18 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:46 pm

Cano's swing is beautiful.

19 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:46 pm

Yikes...closer at 2B than expected.

20 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:50 pm

no tag-up on that ball?

21 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:50 pm

Bad running by Cano.

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:50 pm

Damn.

23 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:51 pm

[21] redundant statement, no?

Nune5!!!

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:54 pm

Hey, anyone know where to find a glossary of cliche baseball terms? Like "Run producer", "good baseball man" (recently fired mediocre manager), etc etc?

26 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:54 pm

Buh-Rains!!

27 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:56 pm

[16]You know, I was thinking that the Yankees stunning inability to develop a starting pitcher since Andy Pettitte was a bad thing, but I forgot about the setup man philosophy.

28 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:56 pm

[21][23] and by Swish, who was past 2B.

[24] And now Cervelli thumbs his nose at me!

29 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:57 pm

Did the A's run into each other there?

30 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:57 pm

Small ball!!

Damn, the A's look like just an awful team all around..whatever happened to genius Billy Beane?

31 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:57 pm

[27] And really, did they *develop* Andy Pettitte? He was called up because of a rash of injuries, and then he started winning and didn't stop. I always saw Pettitte as a happy accident more than the product of Yankee planning.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:58 pm

Ooops, out.

Jetes will probably GiDP to even things out though ...

Monkeypants: "Translation: Jeter is up."

Jeter: "F-U, Monkeypants."

38 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 7:59 pm

[31] I guess that's fair. They didn't have time to overthink him.

Also, to be fair on the other side, Wang's flameout wasn't their fault.

39 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:00 pm

where the heck was Jeter going?

40 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:00 pm

The hell was he going?

41 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:01 pm

Oh Jeter.

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:01 pm

[31] What does it really mean to develop a pitcher, anyway?

[32] Turns out I was wrong, Jetes decided to RUNiDP instead ...

43 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:01 pm

Hey, if anyone needs some comic relief, go check out the Mariners lineup tonight against the Sox. Poor King Felix..

44 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:02 pm

37) LOL!

45 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:02 pm

The Yankees surprise their fans with the "Everyone runs the bases like Posada" night

46 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:03 pm

I got to stop firing up the grill at 7. I see I've missed 7 runs already. And Hughes at 47 pitches to start the 3rd. Sounds about right.

47 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:05 pm

[45] Really, a beautiful tribute to a great and too often under-appreciated Yankee.

48 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:05 pm

One of the more awkward stretches by a first baseman, but I'll take it. : )

49 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:06 pm

Heck of a play by Cano.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:06 pm

That was a thing of beauty.

You're officially forgiven, Robbie, at least until your next escapade on the bases ...

51 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:08 pm

[42] Increasingly, I have come to think that it means stunting their maturation in the minors with ridiculously low pitch counts and innings counts, and monkeying with their deliveries, in order to avoid injuries. Then watching them suffer injuries anyway, and never throw 200 innings before they are 39 y.o.

52 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:09 pm

[42] As we've learned, it means to institute arbitrary rules, yanke them around between roles with no apparent plan, and leave them a middle reliever.

53 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:09 pm

I heart Robbie!

54 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:09 pm

That athleticism is why I think Robby could handle shortstop, if Yanks find it easier to find a replacement 2B rather than a SS.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:10 pm

Of course you know Paulie, that the *other* reason that other 2nd basemen don't make that play is that, well, that's what shortstops are for ...

56 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:10 pm

Did Teix learn to run from Matsui?

59 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:11 pm

You know, I like Cano and all, but it might be a wee bit early to declare him a hall of famer.

60 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:12 pm

Yeah, this is going well.

One batter later. Oh, well......

77 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:30 pm

By the time this inning is over, Hughes will need a guide dog to find the pitcher's mound.

78 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:30 pm

Teix looks so dorky when he puffs his cheeks during exertion

79 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2011 8:31 pm

OK, as fun as this is, it's not worth staying up any later. Throw strikes, Phil Hughes.

What da... did the Score Truck get married and have a baby? (When I logged in, Kay said the A's were leading the Yanks, so I had to double check... moron!)

90 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 22, 2011 9:12 pm

Fer fuck's sake Phil, can you please just get 3 more outs so we can get somebody else who doesn't have fuckall in there?!?!?

Gah.

17 runs. What problems with the Yankee offense? Did I really write that?

111 SteveF   ~  Jul 22, 2011 11:40 pm

Before tonight's game they had the second best runs/game of any team in baseball. They really only suffer by the inevitable comparison to Boston.

Relative to the league, they've pitched better than average as well.

Frankly, the team is pretty solid and there isn't much to complain about -- not that that will dissuade anyone from trying. They probably aren't the best team in baseball (or the league), but I'd be fairly surprised if they didn't make the playoffs.

I was at the game tonight! It was lovely, my first of the season. It was fun to watch all those hits but Christ, the man had a 9 run lead and couldn't get out of the fifth!

Oh, and I got to walk "home" afterwards, which was fabulous! (Staying with my dad, who lives just over the bridge between Broadway and Amsterdam. It's really cool to just walk away into the night.)
