Hip to Be Square

He might not have much left but Jorge Posada made the most of his first start in a week today. In the second inning he hit a two-run single and in the fifth he hit a long grand slam home run as the Yanks beat-up on the Rays, 9-2. Phil Hughes pitched well, giving up a couple of runs on four hits over six innings, but it was Posada who gave the fans the big thrills. His buddy Derek Jeter was honored before the game–more 3,000 hit love–so it was lovely to see ol’ Jorge rip shit up.

One for the money, two for the show…a fun day in the Bronx.

Elsewhere, according to Brian Heyman:

Freddy Garcia cut a finger on his pitching hand four or five days ago in a kitchen accident, according to Joe Girardi, so he has been scratched from tomorrow’s start and the decision about who to cut from the rotation will now be delayed. A.J. Burnett will take the start tomorrow, weather permitting, because the forecast sounds bad.

M's three straight hits to start the first against the Grinch..make it four! 3-0 M's! They're hitting it hard of Beckett, hope King Felix can cruise to the shutout now.

Can they put Freddie retroactively on the 15 day DL? To add a useful player. So he'd skip this start plus one more.

Hey, Beckett finally got someone out!

[8] Nice to see you RIYank, was settling in here for a solo Sox-Ms gamethread.

Bad news about Freddie..

11 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2011 10:39 pm

[10] Well, could be worse, Mr. OK. Fred could probably use some time off anyway, and the rotation is overloaded.

12 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2011 10:57 pm

Well, no perfecto, but King Felix has faced the minimum.

[12] Real pleasure to watch him pitch. But going to miss rest of this one, hope he shuts them out!

Price gives up 4 runs, HRs to Ellsbury and Mighty Mouse... who is now the Sox clean up hitter.

[14] Price??? I'm getting my studs mixed up. Felix ahead 5-4. Beckett out after 6.

This from E@#$ regarding the long boomerang that is Proctor's arm:

Proctor had a strong season for Los Angeles in 2008, but ever since he's pitched to a 6.23 ERA in 78 games with the Dodgers and Braves.

It was Cashman who criticized Torre earlier this season for overusing Proctor in 2006 and ruining him.

"I met with Proctor and said, 'You better stop telling the manager this because the way he manages ... he wants an honest answer,'" Cashman said earlier this season, adding "there was no hypocrisy here."

Cashman said it was the Torre's responsibility to make the decision and hinted that Torre put too much stock in his player's self-assessment.

"I'm not paying the pitcher to be the pitching coach, for instance, or the manager," Cashman said. "We're paying the manger to be the manager and I'm paying the pitching coach to be the pitching coach."

Cashman said overuse was not an issue with Girardi because "we have new people here that utilize people a certain way now."

Cashman added: "You can't put your assets in jeopardy. You can overuse them or you lose them."

To borrow a phrase from one of our own, "haha hahaha aha haahaha!" - Love, B. Logan + J. Veras
