"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Say Again?

I leave the Internet for a few hours and the Yanks trade for Ichiro. Hey Now.

Sure, he’s not a great player anymore, he’s probably not even that good, but he’s headed for the Hall of Fame and he gives the Yanks a quality outfield now, doesn’t he? Dwayne Wise, who played well as a back-up, has been designated assignment.

Oh, and Ichiro will be in the lineup tonight against the Mariners in Seattle.

Whoa.

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez DH
Andruw Jones LF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Russell Martin C

Never mind the fireworks: Let’s Go Yank-ees!

As bad as he is, why designate Wise? Clearly OF depth is a weak spot...wouldn't it be better to keep him stashed in AAA and release a useless reliever like Qualls?

2 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:11 pm

I was sitting on the porch and the wife comes home and asks, "how about the new acquisition?" "Who?" "Ichiro.' "WTF!" Madness! I don't see you how you can't like the deal. No way Ichiro can't be excited to play for a playoff team. I hope he goes on an old school tear.

3 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:11 pm

[1] Agree, of course. Qualls instead of Wise makes no sense..

4 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:15 pm

It's weird because his name is so established, he's been such an exciting player, it's hard not to be juiced on some level. Curious though, because he's lost so much. But he'll be batting down in the line up and it'll be interesting to see if being on the Yanks, in a humbling, but promising situation, will reignite his game.

5 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:20 pm

I love it, and can't wait to root for him, even with tempered expectations.

6 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:23 pm

I remember being really excited when the Yankees acquired Strawberry. I was in college so I wasn't watching as many games as nowadays. Glad I get to see this. First Ichiro walks across the field to play his old team immediately and then the good guys fly home to face Boston. Sweet.

7 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:26 pm

I wonder if this means Swisher's hip is much worse than the missing-3-games level..

8 knuckles   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:26 pm

Strawberry
Fielder
Raines
Justice

aging big names who still managed to contribute something to very good Yankee teams after their primes passed. Not I didn't put Canseco on tis list.

9 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:28 pm

I think a change of scenery, especially to this team, will be good for an old craftsman like Ichiro. I will not be surprised at all when he contributes a clutch single here, a 2 ribbie gapped there, or an OF assist.

10 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:28 pm

[8]
Pudge Rodriguez
Boggs

11 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:30 pm

8) I think Ichiro has declined more than those guys when they came to the Yanks but I'm with 9) and willing to drink the proverbial Kool Aid. It could turn into a glitzy-sounding dud, but one never knows...and Cash might not be done yet...

Think the Sox will land a stud like Josh Johnson?

12 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:31 pm

9) iPad doesn't know from gappers.

13 knuckles   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:38 pm

[10]
Def Boggs plus Sheffield and Abreu. But I was sticking more to guys who were role players only and less left in the tank tho I guess Justice may fall between the 2 camps. If Ichiro is around next year and can approach the production of those 3 then that's just gravy.

14 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:40 pm

Ca$h-ninja strikes again!

It's a risk, but I like the upside. And the price was very right.

[1] They have Dickerson in AAA, and he's quite capable. They also just signed Fukudome to a minor league contract. I presume they decided they're ok with depth, or that Wise will clear waivers (didn't he already do that earlier in this season?) and be around if needed.

I think Qualls is a placeholder, but with Mitchell gone, who would you bring up in his place? (We both know the Yankees would never go with both of our preferred solution-a 6 man bullpen). Wade's only thrown 4 innings since his demotion; are his kinks worked out? Warren, I think, is the only other guy on the 40 man who makes any sense, except he doesn't.

Anyway, its an academic exercise once Joba's rehab stint is done.

15 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:42 pm

oh yeah, Sheffield. Before he went ba-donkers.

16 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 23, 2012 8:51 pm

Gosh, Pudge. That's right.

17 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:06 pm

Lance Berkman doesn't make this list?

18 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:06 pm

The mighty Yankees have a 20% Japanese starting lineup tonight. Big day in Tokyo.

What's the word Boat and Mr. Jazz?

Good start, Cap.

21 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:15 pm

Ichiro looks good in the road grays, can't wait to see him in pinstripes. He is such a cartoon character, this should be fun.

22 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:21 pm

Likely HOFers currently on the roster: Jeter, Arod, Mo, Ichiro, CC. CC needs a few more years, Cano a few more.

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:23 pm

[17] Evening sports tabloids will go bonkers. Will pick one up on the way home, all Ichiro-articles between the "lusty secretary" confessionals and ads for "health delivery services".

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:25 pm

This is becoming a bit of a concern. WTF, Alex!

25 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:25 pm

Arod, bouncer double play and a two base error. Not a good first inning for him.

26 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:26 pm

You know who this trade made me think of?

George.

Take that how you will.

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:28 pm

Had 'em played perfectly, Ichiro!

38 thelarmis   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:49 pm

did ichiro get a huge ovation when he came to the plate?

39 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:51 pm

[37] Huge. He took off his helmet and bowed to the crowd from home plate.

40 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:51 pm

[37] yep.

41 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:52 pm

[38] awesome! thanks : )

43 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 23, 2012 9:56 pm

Martin hit the ball hard too...ah well. Yanks need a serious visit from the score truck. Especially with King Felix lurking.

44 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 23, 2012 10:01 pm

Time for Hiroki to have a really strong outing, right?

I'm worried about my wife's old man, he's been a dedicated Mariners fan for the past 11 years. I wonder if he'll switch to the Yankees? He hated Matsui for leaving the Giants.

132 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2012 11:59 pm

[129] 1968-75 Miles period is unreal. Wave after wave of incredible musicians with the groover getting harder and harder till it just about splits the Earth on "Agharta" and "Pangaea". Wish I had a nice system at my place but that's what the local jazz cafes are for here!

134 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 12:06 am

[131] Yeah, I'm a HUGE fan of electric Miles. LOVE Jack Johnson, LOVE the Cellar Door and Live Evil ... Pangea is top notch (though so, So, SO wanting for Jimi) ... Agharta less so ... but both are staggering, considering that Miles essentially disappeared for what 5 years, afterwards???

136 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 12:11 am

[133] Yeah, the famous 5-year break where he did nothing but snort cocaine and liasion with working women in his Upper East Side townhouse. I wonder how much of that was exasgerated in his auto-bio..and how much was just he took the music so far he had to stop and find a different path..

Live/Evil with Jarrett on keys is just stupendous.

137 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 12:15 am

[135] If you haven't heard it, check out the Cellar Door Sessions, it's the live shows that the live portion of Live/Evil was taken from ... there's some fantastic stuff there.

[136] Oh, that's the big box-set right? Yes, have heard that through unsavory means..but it's on the to-purchase list.

Also just saw a new release called "Black Music Disaster" with Matthew Shipp on farfisa organ, J Spaceman on guitar, John Coxno on guitar and Steve Noble on drums..no idea what this will me like but love the name.

I'm 100% into this Ichiro acquisition.

Alex, I like the "Fat Elvis" comment. From a literary point of view.
