OK, looking at the schedule in March, was anyone thinking this was gong to be a crucial series?

2 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:06 pm

For real.

3 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:09 pm

[1] Michael Kay just said what you said.
Not a good feeling, I know.

4 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:09 pm

Lousy start.

5 Sliced Bread   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:10 pm

can the DH hit for the catcher?

6 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:11 pm

NICE.

7 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:12 pm

Love those easy-peasy DPs.

8 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:12 pm

That's better.

[3] Should I be flattered or concerned?

9 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:14 pm

Always a pleasure to see the backward K early.

Okay, boys, let's swing the lumber!

10 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:20 pm

About two feet shy, Rob.

11 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:21 pm

[8] Oh, well, probably just a coincidence, but if it happens regularly, I would definitely be concerned.

12 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:25 pm

[11] I'll break out my tin foil hat, just in case.

13 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:25 pm

Hmmmmmmm.
What's up, Hiroki?

14 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:28 pm

Ugh, doubleplus ungood.

15 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:29 pm

Hey, this kind of sucks.

16 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:42 pm

Just checked in, see Nix at DH (!)...batting 9th (!!). Concluding that Girardi is no longer managing in a serious manner, I think I'll pass on tonight's game.

17 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:46 pm

didn't this no-name already urp us a little while back?

we should destroy him this time...

[16] yeah.

18 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:47 pm

rays with the early leads over the jays...

19 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:49 pm

[16] Whereas you would have filled the DH slot with...???

20 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:51 pm

oh great, this unknown is throwing a fucking PERFECT game at us, a third of the way through.

brilliant!

21 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:51 pm

[19] ron blomberg.

22 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:52 pm

Let's see, Mattingly & Maris are two.

23 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:56 pm

fuck it. just put hank aaron at dh.

why not?

24 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:56 pm

[21] You'll have to pry him away from the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox.
[22] I missed the trivia question -- what is it?

25 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:56 pm

i must admit, i'm a big stan musial fan.

i'd love to see him at dh. and if he slumps in the playoffs, you can always bat him 8th...

26 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:58 pm

ok, 2nd time thru the lineup.

time for the captain to do his thing. break up the no-no, steal a base, score a run...

27 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:58 pm

[24] Yankee MVPs since 1950 not in the Hall.

28 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 6:59 pm

[24] trivia question:

what diehard yankees fan, who doubles as an unknown percussionist, is about to release his 2nd solo cd?

29 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:01 pm

[27] hmmm, that's very different from my trivia question...

how many are there? well, shit, jeter should've an mvp (or two...)

30 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:01 pm

I knew it. I knew he'd get the first hit.

31 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:01 pm

there's my captain!

now steal 2nd. he's 3 away from 350 in his career, which has absolutely NO bearing on anything.

32 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:02 pm

[30] of course, you did. you read [26]! : )

33 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:02 pm

[29] There are 4. Not counting active players.

34 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:03 pm

jays tied the rays.

35 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:03 pm

[33] hmmm, so a-rod's out...

36 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:04 pm

[27] Wow. I guess restricted to Hall-eligible.
Hmmmmm. Munson?

37 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:04 pm

Elston Howard, of course.

38 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:04 pm

Thurman & Elston Howard the other two.

39 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:04 pm

rickey's enshrined and won in oaktown...

40 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:05 pm

[27] Munson is one.

41 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:05 pm

dammit swish.

was it looking?

[38] absolutely!

42 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:05 pm

[28] Hey, cool!

I mean, I have a guess, but it's probably wrong...

43 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:06 pm

Elston Howard won an MVP. Is he in the HOF?

44 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:06 pm

[40] godDAMN you are slow.

45 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:09 pm

I am starting to intensely dislike this team. And I can't even watch thanks to fucking Angelos, who convinced mlb that DC is in his crappy market.

Motherfuck.

46 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:10 pm

[43] not in the hall. but i believe the yanks retired his #.

47 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:10 pm

[45] easy, jj!

good to see you : )

48 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:11 pm

[44] YEAH BUT I DIDN'T LOOK IT UP!!!!

49 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:16 pm

[42] yeah man! i'm excited.

doing the artwork in a coupla weeks. hope to have physical copies by Nov. will take some to NY with me for Turkey Day.

prior to the release, i'm going to be sharing the Todd Drew tribute piece ("Shadow Games"), with a select few from the Banter. if i don't go the route of 'undisclosed recipients', i'll make sure to BCC you, for privacy purposes. is the email addy from your prior paypal (thanks again!) still kosher?

50 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:17 pm

3 solo homers in the ...ays game.

J-team has 2 of them.

51 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:18 pm

How many here think we will NOT be in 1st places in 2 weeks?

52 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:22 pm

Anything good on TV tonight?

53 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:23 pm

fuck.

54 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:24 pm

[51] I have faith. Yes it's irrational, but September call ups are tomorrow.

55 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:27 pm

[19] Ibanez, because I would be playing Dickerson in the OF, because I would have DLed Teixera or sent down a useless reliever for a couple of days to get another position player on the bench.

56 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:28 pm

[51] 2 weeks? we might not be solely in first place in 2 days.

57 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:37 pm

[49] Yes, good address!
[55] Okay, but that's not Girardi. That's Cashman.

58 rbj   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:40 pm

Sigh.

59 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:40 pm

Oy.

60 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:43 pm

that fucking sucked.

61 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:48 pm

[57] Yeah, I know. It's all sort of blurring together.

62 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:53 pm

By the way, it's now pretty clear that Billy Beane is the best GM in baseball, and that there's nobody else close (in case that wasn't clear before).

How the fuck did he do this? The team is playing .700 since the AS Break. With nobodies.

63 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 7:55 pm

strikeout machines.

both "m. gonzalez" and grandy...

64 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:00 pm

[57] Or I may simply have stuck with Montero at DH despite his disappointing sophomore season. I guess that one's on the GM, too.

65 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:00 pm

i would not be opposed to ichiro hitting an earl weaver special right now.

just pretend it's fuckett on the mound!

66 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:02 pm

I have the Rays-Jays on in the background. Jeremy Hellickson looks like he's 12 years old.

67 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:04 pm

[47] They are sapping my will to live.

How bad is it now? I stopped doing game day as it was causing too much ageta.

68 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:04 pm

this sucks.

69 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:05 pm

[67] wow. that's some serious shit, man.

life is pretty cool. and the yankees are still in first place!

70 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:08 pm

hiro's only at 85 pitches, but i smell some bullpen rouxlette on the horizon...

71 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:15 pm

[66] I know, he does. I noticed that yesterday when they showed J-Hel in the dugout.

72 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:15 pm

[69] They've been playing mediocre to shitty baseball for quite a long time at this point. It's been a slow death.

Hiro's translator is going to have to clean up "hey, where the fuck are those runs?"

73 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:15 pm

[70] He's been efficient, but he needed to give up –1 runs tonight, and he couldn't pull it off.

74 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:17 pm

[72] yes, they've essentially been a .500 ballclub since the A-S break. there's a month left to kick it into gear.

i'm sure we'll make the postseason. it's a crap-shoot from there...

75 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:17 pm

hey. a new pitcher.

wahoo! rejoice! score truck!!!

76 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:19 pm

[73] jamey abersold has made a career out of -1.

i'll guess your son is familiar...?

77 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:20 pm

this would be a terrific time for jeter's 2nd career grand slam.

if anyone can hit one with the bases empty, it's the captain.

78 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:21 pm

golden sombrero time...

79 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:22 pm

[73] He'd need some help from Brett Gardner to pull that off.

80 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:23 pm

[76] The Music Minus One guy? (I honestly didn't know there was one guy.)

81 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:23 pm

wear it like a tiara, nick.

82 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:24 pm

[73][77] These two comments really summarize the entire game, no?

83 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:25 pm

[80] yeah, him!

there's lotsa music minus one books. he's the 'main' guy...

84 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:25 pm

[74] I said two days ago that I thought they may well be out of playoff position within ten days. It may not take that long.

[73] Well put.

Seriously, rolling over like this in the first game of this big a series against pitchers who are not exactly world-beaters?

Come on.

85 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:25 pm

[82] The week, in fact.

86 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:26 pm

[82] and don't forget my "nostralarmis" comment of predicting swish's 4th k!

see [78]

87 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:28 pm

[84] Can you believe the Rays are rolling over for the horrible Blue Jays, first two games of their series?? Damn, there are no good teams in baseball. All teams suck now. I'm pretty sure MLB as a whole is now playing sub-.500 ball.

88 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:30 pm

well, if the oreo's shut us out this weekend and next, their run differential won't be so bad anymore! ; )

89 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:30 pm

[87] well, every team except the Nats, who are going to bench their young star pitcher!

90 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:31 pm

[89] (I really meant the AL only. The Reds are also awesome.)

91 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:32 pm

[87] The Rays having two bad games (and let's wait on that) doesn't change what we all know - the Yanks have been playing bad baseball for a long time.

Would you describe tonight's performance as anything other than lifeless? Please let me know. As I said, I can't watch thanks to Peter Fucking Angelos.

92 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:32 pm

[84] yes, i read your outbursts of positivity when i got home from work. inspiring!

[88] ack. i really hate it when the parentheses part of the emoticon goes to the next line. the preview is different than the final view. these are the things...

93 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:33 pm

rouxlette!

see? this game is now somewhat fun.

94 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:34 pm

And I mean really, look at the two choices in the title of this thread. Sure looks like they chose "Shaddap."

95 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:35 pm

[91] And I'm asking likewise whether the Rays' performance tonight has been lifeless.

The Yankees haven't been good for a month. But baseball seasons are six months, not one month. We've played five. And so far, the Yankees are better than the competition.

Not today. But the Rays suck today too.

96 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:35 pm

[91] well, other than hiro giving up 2 homers to 2 homerun hitters in a homerun park, i'd say he did rather well.

of course, those 2 homers loom large. even without them, we lose 1-0.

make that 2-0!

d-lowe! rouxlette! this game is awesome!

jj: please don't do anything drastic. beer is good...

97 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:36 pm

[95] one more out until the rays suck. or...don't suck.

98 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:37 pm

[92] I'm just frustrated. I'm not sure why, as I never expected anything out of this season to begin with. I guess it's because of what RIYank said in mocking me - none of the other teams *do* look unbeatable. The postseason will bring all sorts of ageta, and because of my lack of faith in the bullpen and multiple spots of the lineup, I suspect misery, but in a year like this, you would like to make it and give it a shot, no?

I've still got residual frustration with CC, too. They needed that freaking game, and I'm getting sick of him not coming up aces.

99 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:37 pm

And that does it, the Rays fold, crushed under the boot of the pathetic AAA Blue Jays. What a disgrace.

100 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:38 pm

rays suck!!!

well, not really. dude got thrown out at home. by ruben sierra, no less. kidding - someone named sierra. speaking of which, i think i'll start drinking on an empty stomach. seems appropriate...

101 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:38 pm

[97] helluvanending in that game

102 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:38 pm

I'm pretty sure it's "agita". (I know a lot of Italians!)

103 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:39 pm

Tony Montana in [0] looks slightly better than I do this morning after the German Beer Festival last night..and I got to deal with a hangover AND losing 6-0 to freakin' BALTIMORE??

Not a good start to September..

104 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:40 pm

that's low, derek.

105 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:40 pm

Moises, not Ruben!

Like Moses said when he got to Jerusalem: "Oy am I hungry, give me a reuben right away and don't be stingy with the sauerkraut!"

106 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:41 pm

[102] i was going to write that, but i didn't wanna push him over the edge. it's your responsibility now.

but, yeah, it's "agita"...

107 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:42 pm

[103] Don't worry, it's still August here.

[104] Cashman made like shorty and got Lowe. (I wanted to say that at the time but I think I was traveling or something.)

I also thought about "Lowe leverage", but, meh.

108 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:42 pm

[105] moises. what a name! and by that, i mean, flat-out terrible name. not as bad as "ass dribble" (asdrubul), but close.

109 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:43 pm

[106] JJ always has a sense of humor even when he's frothing. It's just what he does, and so I poke at him a little, because that's what I do.

110 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:43 pm

[103] i will join you in the september hangover. but you'll have to wait for me until tomorrow.

111 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:43 pm

[102] I guess it is agita. Don't know why I've always sounded it out the other way.

[95] Let's just say I don't like the trend. And the trend for me is that I don't like the way they look against Baltimore and the Rays. And if that doesn't change, we're due for a very ugly ending to this season.

112 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:44 pm

I know, there are some wild names in MLB now. What's with "Starlin", anyway? That's not a real Spanish name! You can't even start a word with "st" in Spanish! Is he "Estarlin"?

113 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:44 pm

[109] you do that? i hadn't noticed.

114 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:45 pm

I do! I know, it's very subtle.

115 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:47 pm

[109] I've being feeling unusually humorless. I think it's too many things intersecting with possibly disastrous consequences. The pennant race, the Election, watching Russel Martin take his hacks, the inevitable obliteration of my beloved Wolverines tomorrow night, motherfuckers killing wolves from airplanes, I'm still stuck in this fucking dump, being a vegetarian who doesn't cook is sapping my will to live faster than the Yankees and maybe I will have a fucking beer.

116 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:47 pm

Oh, and, thank you, Curtis, for averting a shutout.

117 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:48 pm

[115] You should have a beer. And learn to cook. Start simple.

118 RIYank   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:49 pm

Well, l'chaim.
Good thing the Bombers saved up all their runs for tomorrow.

119 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:49 pm

Also I made a real sweet excel spreadsheet to track home and away records and games remaining and I refuse to update because the Yankees will. not. stop. fucking. losing. (ever since I made that damn spreadsheet)

I mean, I put a *lot* of effort into that thing, could the Yankees please fucking step it up????!

(because history always says that they win the division when I make one those spreadsheets. Maybe I hexed by making one that is new and vastly improved).

120 monkeypants   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:50 pm

[117] Or better, start eating some meat.

121 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:51 pm

[112] yeah, what's up with "everth", "yamaico" and "ubaldo"?

and last names, too.

bastardo! plouffe!

122 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:53 pm

grandy - thanks for saving us from the shutout.

jj - i'll join you with the beer. clink and slainthe!

no red meat here. (though pink is quite tasty!)

123 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:54 pm

I was so excited that looking at home and away records the Yankees so clearly had the best schedule left (compared to the O's and the Rays).

Which is probably why losing to the previously 25-40 away Jays really chapped my ass.

The Rays are losing to a team that iirc is above .500 at home.

124 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:56 pm

[120] I just can't do it. I think my diet just sucks and I'm craving protein because I eat like a moron.

125 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:57 pm

double digit shutout going on for the nats. that'll cut into the cards' run diff...

tiggers pulling away from the pale hose...

tex-ass securing their best record in the junior circuit...

reds winning. of course...

buccos hurting a bit here lately...

126 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 8:57 pm

[124] beer.

127 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 31, 2012 9:01 pm

[126] No more beer! Two too many steins last night at the German festival..even the OomPah German cover band started sounding good.."Smoke on Ze Vater" done by Germans, danced to by a mass of drunken Japanese..odd, but fun.

128 thelarmis   ~  Aug 31, 2012 9:04 pm

[127] hey, i play Vater sticks! Manhattan 7A wood tip. : )
